The Boys Season 5 - Main complaint so far

Posted by Bubbly-Function-1841

Overall, I am really liking the new season, but if I had one complaint, it’s that I can’t help but think that it’s plagued by Netflix/Stranger Things 5 writing. By that I mean, 6+ characters standing in a room either a). Talking about a plan that “just might work” or b). Talking about what just happened 5 minutes prior. Then, right before shit goes down, one character will pull another one aside for a quick bonding moment. I’m not saying that the show or season as a whole is bad like ST5 - far from it - that’s just really one of my main complaints from an overall positive experience I’m having so far. Does anyone feel the same?

This isn't really new. The "daytime soap" aspect of the show has been there from the beginning.

This is why I get confused when people act like there has been a big drop in quality. The show has always felt like this. Seasons 1 and 2 in particular felt like they moved at a very slow pace because of this very thing.

Season 1 did it way better though

It's been a problem with Kripkes writing his entire career. He was hacky on Supernatural and he's hacky now. He only has two tools in his writers took box: a giant cartoon mallet that he uses for his satire/commentary, and a bunch of random "I've suddenly decided that I need to run off and do something stupid on my own in order to create contrived excuses for drama" cards that he makes characters randomly play depending on what the plot needs. There is absolutely nothing even remotely subtle, clever, or creative about the writing of either of these shoes

I guess I haven’t realized since I haven’t gone back to rewatch the first few seasons; so it’s been 5+ years since I have seen them in the first place. Should’ve disclaimed that in my post

dude, each and every season starts with a bang, then devolves into this melodramatic almost nonsensical bullshit...rinse repeat. and in there is some of the best satire any show has ever done...ever

Fun-Tutor-5296 Apr 16, 2026 +5
nah, Simpsons first 10 seasons are still unmatched.

Particular-Way-2147 Apr 16, 2026 +3
The satire this season has been incredibly lazy and forced

My main complaint is Kimiko's dialogue, I have no idea what they are thinking there. Everything else has been the usual good/on par with the previous seasons. I think if you went back you would notice they do the "planning" you're complaining about in every second episode lol

I get that it’s her first time able to speak and isn’t used to it, but she’s heard other people speaking before and has had conversations via ASL so she knows how to have a normal conversation. I’m just kind of confused why all her dialogue is this bad

Bebop_Man Apr 16, 2026 +10
I'm pretty sure the voice has been dubbed over too. Doesn't sound like it's coming from her.

kirby2000 Apr 16, 2026 +6
I'm pretty sure that's her real voice, here is an interview: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owlnyFd6VKE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=owlnyFd6VKE)

Bebop_Man Apr 16, 2026 +9
I think that is her real voice, but she dubbed over herself. Not sure why.

we've all been used to her being mute for 4 seasons and a few years. of course hearing she actually talk it's going to be jarring and weird. i remember first watching cast interviews and such and still being caught off guard and feeling like i was watching some sort of strange irl dub.

i will say tho, some of the dialogue is rough but i honestly think it's from the tiktokifcation of shows (dialogue) and kimiko happened to learn english from that lmaoo

Professional-Fact625 Apr 18, 2026 +6
She's so annoying now

She learned to speak by watching tiktok.

And everybody who is gonna die will have his moment to tie up all his plot and and trauma nicely to the point of being a blatant walking dead the next scene. Like a soldier on a war movie that kisses the helmet photo of his girlfriend. You go next.

Darklord_Bravo Apr 18, 2026 +7
They finally get Kimiko and Frenchie together, and you just know it's going to end badly for them. The PDA moments this season are so we feel bad for when they probably die.

Ponky616 6 days ago +3
Been waiting for them to get together for 6 years and this is how I’m repaid, I’m gonna be SICK. My theory is that he dies but she ends up pregnant by him (hence the emphasis on their sex life and his speech to Annie about living on for the dead) and has to live on with that last piece of him.

The writing has been kind of bad for the past couple of seasons. It’s kind of a shame because the actors themselves are fantastic and seem to be carrying really generic writing
29
Frosty7130 Apr 16, 2026 +17
The writers are extremely high on their own supply. Starr, Ackles, and Urban absolutely carry the show.
17
Mookies_Bett Apr 16, 2026 +9
Genuinely can't think of a single reason to keep watching outside of those 3. The writing is just *so* bad at this point. It's also just annoying how ham fisted and over the top the "commentary" is for every single episode. It's like they're beating us over the head with a mallet, it's really eye roll inducing.

I keep skipping the frenchie and I forget her characters name but Karen’s scenes. I hate the sudden she talks, she should’ve gotten a voice like 5 seasons ago and I hate the frenchie stuff. Automatic skip.

Ya like they can go anytime cus I’m not following the storyline at all. He’s been redundant since like the second season.

It's just what happens when you spend your whole show delaying the inevitable, so you keep everything on a holding pattern, until suddenly you arrive at the final season simultaneously having to wrap everything up while drawing it out for a full season.
17
ChalupaBatmanMc01 Apr 16, 2026 +5
Justified Season 5 was seen as the "delaying the inevitable" season when it was airing, they landed the plane exceptionally well. In the case of The Boys they got bogged down with spin offs, I wasn't the biggest fan of Season 4 but I've been enjoying Season 5. I'm gonna hold off on it till it ends, it's not going to be perfect but as long as I feel satisfied I'm happy.
5
longjohnsus Apr 16, 2026
I mean breaking bad spent 5 seasons delaying the inevitable, and that show is fantastic
0
Mookies_Bett Apr 16, 2026 +17
I don't agree with that at all. Breaking Bad was a descent into madness, every season featured some kind of radical shift in character motivation for most of the main cast. It would be like if Walt became full on s4 level Heisenberg at the end of season 1 and then spent 3 seasons fighting with Gus until finally killing him in the finale of season 5. Breaking bad was nowhere near that one note lol.
17
somethingrelevant_m 3 days ago +2
BB didn't have a singular, all encompassing goal like the Boys does. The goal wasn't to kill Gus from the start

I read that this last season would be a gruesome slaughterfest, so im expecting a bunch of main characters dying, but so far its been tame.

Im not in a hurry to potentially see my favorite characters get slaughtered, but this season lacks so much suspense and urgency. It just hasn't felt like how the final season of the boys should feel. Idk if its too much going on but it just kinda feels thrown together

Like another person that replied to you said, dude, we’re only 3/8 episodes in. Just have some patience. And also, they already killed off A-Train, and according to reliable leaks, a lot of members of the boys will die in episodes 5-7

I honestly wouldn't mind this trope if it was followed by everything they planned going straight to shit and them having to improvise on the fly. But in Stranger Things, every plan they made worked out without a hitch and it just got annoying.

It’s weird because it feels like season 1 of a new show lol

My issues with season 5. After watching euphoria also right before. Is what the f*** with the writing…? It just seems a lot of the lines are just like, idk how to explain it, like brain rot/tiktok writing? Like cheeky one liners that are so over the top to grab your attention…? I also was on a little mushrooms/weed/alcohol, but some of the dialogue in both shows I was like what the f*** are they saying right now, not even in any other seasons from pre 2021-22 was like that, definitely it’s post covid writing lol… idk I’m still going to watch it, just a lot of writing for all shows is just brainrotish, or idk just getting dumber?

LoudPurchase9694 3 days ago +1
Im kind of disappointed in this season so far, honestly. For it to be the final season and so much shit to be on the line, I feel like it lacks suspense and urgency. Its been mostly people talking and unnecessary scenes, feels like a bunch of random shit just kind of thrown together.

wjveryzer7985 3 days ago +1
Im LOVING it but my main complaint is EXACTLY the same. So much wasted time with dialogue scenes we have already seen COUNTLESS other times. Seriously, how many times will dewey and starlight hate/love each other. Or butcher MAYBE going bad.

And Starr can barely speak with all the Botox, she has to slur the words out.

I haven't seen the new season yet, but reminds me of last season.

I am not getting that gravity for this season that we felt before...not sure why but something off
1
Frosty7130 Apr 16, 2026 +5
Some shit happens *quick* right now. A-Train went through an entire third act in an episode, Kimiko being able to talk was just blazed past, Stan Edgar was blasting out exposition as fast as he could basically his entire screentime last episode.

Man this show would be so much better without homelands. So tired of his weird ass suit and his evil, he's such a whiny azz bich

It’s nowhere near the level of Stranger Things 5. It was very very bad

starlight is shown as useless, her dialogue's are so ass

BoXoNoPoLuS1017 6 days ago
I'm definitely ready for Gen V. I love the shows with super powers, heros and villains, but I'm really sick of Homelander. It's been now 5 seasons of him. Kill him off already, and have a new villain. He's so whiny, weird, annoying and evil. But mainly he's so weird and evil , and whiny, that it ruins the rest of the show.

It's just old, ya know. At some point it's like the show needs some new blood.

Main Complaints 1. Sister Sage and Soldier Boy and badly written.  2. Kimiko was better with her mouth shut. 3. Homelander beating Ryan was copy paste of Invincible. Nothing original. 4. The opening scene of revealing of Flight 37 was and they doubled down by saying it was AI. I mean, companies have to software to detect whether something is AI or not. 5. Lastly, what the hell were those Madelyn- Homelander and breast milk bathing scenes. Too gross.
-4
ReReRelapseG Apr 18, 2026 +3
For 4: AI detection software is shit. And just because it exists doesn't mean it not detecting AI proves its not AI. Hell one of those AI writing detectors i just put a paragraph from Fareinheit 451 and it gave me 90% AI. They're really useless.

Odd-Refrigerator4665 6 days ago +2
I agree. 1. Sister Sage is just a listnook mod self insert; and Soldier Boy was better when he was written as an anti-hero in season 3. 2. Not to sound like a Free Ablebodied Glazer but Kimiko was just more interesting when she signed everything, and her talking is ironically more distracting. 3. I don't see it. This was foreshadowed in season 3. I just wished it would have been more climactic even if Ryan still loses. 4. I'm actually upset Homelander didn't follow up on his threats to Maeve and Starlight. That should have been the trigger point. It's exhausting how the show sets up things but never follows through. 5. No complaints here.

The bathing one was good I thought haha but yeah the Jesus one was so f****** weird and badly done
