The Ben Stiller Show had arguably the greatest writing staff in television history. Stiller, Bob Odenkirk, Judd Apatow, David Cross, Robert Cohen, Brent Forrester, Janeane Garofalo, and Dino Stamatopoulos. I think Louis CK and some others I can't remember were also involved.

I used to work in the building where Severance is shot. A ton of my coworkers met Ben when he was doing location scouting for the show. There's still a heavy pride for being the set of that show and the people who work/visit the building show it.

never noticed it as a kid in the 90s, but this scene shows Jim Carrey is a solid 6 footer (Google says 6'2). plus Jim demonstrates solid bball drill with two basketballs near the beginning of the clip. and it's notable how in shape he is for this movie - would've been great to see Chip Douglas versus ~~White Goodman~~ Tony Perkis

Seriously, if a guy jumped off a defenders back and shattered the backboard on a dunk it would be the most epic moment in pick up basketball history and everyone would go absolutely nuts. The way these guys just mill about embarrassed and annoyed is the most unbelievable part of this scene.

They didn’t. No one at the time considered it as a drama. It was marketed as a comedy. But that was kind of the problem. Dark comedies can be hard to market because the studios don’t usually know which elements to highlight. From what I remember the trailer made it out to be kind of like a *What About Bob?* type domestic comedy in which an obnoxious person insinuates themselves into someone’s life. Which it is, but much darker than the marketing hinted at. The reason why it didn’t do so well at the time is because up until that point Carrey’s movies had been a lot more wacky and frenetic. *The Cable Guy* felt like a gear change and people weren’t expecting it. They went in expecting another *Ace Ventura* or *The Mask* and ended up disappointed because that isn’t what they got. I remember seeing it as a kid and also being confused by it. What the hell was that? But it stuck in my head so when I watched it again on cable tv my expectations were different and I realized how funny it was in a totally different way from Carrey’s other work. Now it’s my favorite film of his and one of the best comedies of the 90s in my opinion.

It totally mind fucked my lil kid brain after only having seen him and MB in their more mainstream movies. It's almost a horror movies at times and I had no idea how to interpret. I really need to rewatch it as an adult. It also reminded me of my brother and Is dynamic with him being special needs but desperately wanting to be around me and my friends despite lacking the ability to do so without pissing everyone off lol

Before this movie came out, I hated Jim Carrey for his annoying, over-the-top personality, and purposely avoided his films. But I saw *The Cable Guy* when it came out and loved it, partly because I could empathize with Matthew Broderick's character having to deal with the obnoxious Jim Carrey character. So, this movie started to change my opinion of Jim Carrey. And then I saw *The Truman Show*, *Eternal Sunshine*, and *Liar, Liar* (in that order), by which time I had completely changed my opinion and loved Jim Carrey.

i had no idea people classified it that way. it was before JC did any dramatic roles so it was straight up comedy as far as the marketing. but yeah it was dark. and it was also the first time i saw JC's acting chops.

Because in 1994, Jim Carrey did Ace Ventura, Dumb & Dumber and The Mask. Those movies were just slap stick comedies, but wildly successful. I can't think of any actor who did that many movies in ONE YEAR that were a success. The Cable Guy has a different tone than those movies, so critics, etc. were thrown off.

I don't think there's been another actor who has the expressive range that Carey has/had. He was nicknamed the man with the rubber face for a reason. It's kind of sad that he's blowing up now for the clone theory / face lift criticism, when his unparalleled facial acting likely took a toll on him. There are other valid things to criticize him over in terms of how he's conducted himself in the last 12 years (the video he released of him gooning to Emma Watson being one of the most cringe things I've ever seen, maybe only second to [My Video For Briona / "Hi Baby Girl"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6laGvKtPZYQ) ). The way he looks now shouldn't be such a prominent part of the conversation

The song choice, along with the editing and some great shots (like the one of Carrey soaring through the air on his way to dunk), make this a really well done scene. I find the film as a whole kind of a hard watch due to how uncomfortable it is, though.

I f****** love Cable Guy. It’s one of the movies I can distinctly remember seeing in the theater all these years later mainly due to the scene at Medieval Times. Once Jim Carrey started on that Star Trek theme, I’m laughing out loud to a dead quiet theater. Nobody got it but me.

Not only was this directed by a young Ben Stiller, but it has quite a few appearances by some actors just before they got big. Owen Wilson plays a d bag on a date with Matthew Broderick’s girlfriend (they are going through a rough patch in the movie) and Bob Odenkirk plays Matthew Broderick’s brother. Jack Black plays Matthew Broderick’s best friend and even Kyle Gass is in it briefly.

Fact I learned at the time this hit rental: Jim Carrey can't dribble to save his life so when you see him in at least the opening, the balls are CGI, I think, I feel like CGI of that quality just wasn't possible when this came out. Whatever the case, he couldn't do the kind of dribbling they needed for the scene.

This movie honestly doesn't get the credit it deserves. My favorite bit throughout the movie is you never learn anything about Robin. Everytime she's about to talk about herself something interrupts her. Its just a really stupid and subtle running joke. I also love the fake Ben Stiller child star murderer trial that unfolds on the news throughout the movie, its so dumb

As a kid, I thought Matthew Broderick was insane for turning down the entertainment center and free cable. At that point Jim Carrey wasn't even that bad.

I loved this movie as a kid. I haven't watched it since. I need to watch it again some time. I also didn't remember a young Jack Black being in it. It felt like it got a lot of hate from critics at the time.

This has really aged as one of Jim Carey's best I think. It's funny, but there's a darkness and sadness to it that just hits the pathos sweet spot. Just kind of makes it something a little more than a goofball comedy.

I'm so glad I saw this in theaters and loved it. It did not get a lot of love even though it deserved it at that time. Bonus points for Filter song used in like every 90's movie/tv show for a minute (but used well here IMO)

Funny story, went to a theater to see this movie. And the theater actually forgot to play it. Had to go to the concession stand and remind them else were there.

I always loved this movie and never understood the hate it got when it came out. I'll never hear Somebody to Love by Jefferson Airplane the same way. I always want to hear Jim's version.
