I love the way that Natalie Means handles the second verse of this song, knowing how the country continuously spat on them and sent them death threats out of jingoistic pride and retaliatory furvor over 9/11 just because they (CORRECTLY) disagreed with Bush about the Iraq war just packs it full of rage at such brazen injustice.
The crescendo is so well done and you can feel she’s come to a breaking point and isn’t forgiving or forgetting anything that people have done to her, instead using it as fuel for their art and giving us the most intense verse ever recorded in country music history. It’s such an engaging part of the song, gives me chills every time.
The Chicks didn’t deserve that shit and also they f****** rule so it’s our loss in the end.

Is that the part that goes at the end "....or my life will be over"?
Yeah, love that entire verse, all the way to that point, such passion and raw emotion.

I assume that’s the part he’s talking about, but that’s the bridge

Sadly, that didn't come of out of nowhere. She was in fact sent a real death threat through the mail written by some random woman. They even show it in the 'Shut Up and Sing' documentary.

My girlfriend had never heard this song and she had every chick CD leading up to the backlash. She had no idea 7 Grammys, because our local radio station never played it

You and your girlfriend can probably thank Clear Channel Communications for that, they were the leading force behind the radio boycott of The Chicks. Corrupt lame-ass media conglomerate doing corrupt lame-ass media conglomerate things.

I came home from a record show with that album, and she had no idea of its existence. I however was fully aware.

They've honestly made some good music since. March March and Tights on my Boat both like to take rotations getting stuck in my head. They're still blacklisted by the industry, even though their stance is fairly normal these days for public opinion.
And we know exactly why March March never got played.... "what the hell happened in Helsinki?" (The line references a meeting between Putin and Trump that took place that pretty much bucked every national security precedent set previously)

>How in the world can the words that I said send somebody so over the edge that they'd write me a letter saying that I better shut up and sing or my life will be over.
These lyrics hit hard. Such a great song and I'm glad The Chicks stood their ground.

Such a great song that was of the moment and still is. The lyrics, the music, the energy/anger, everything about it is perfect to me. I've seen them perform this live several times and I get chills every single time.
After taking a long hiatus, they started teasing a new album in 2018 and had lined up a big tour for 2020 that I don't think had been announced yet. The album was finally announced the first week of March 2020 that it would be released in May. Well, we all know what happened just a few days/weeks after they made that announcement. That album was delayed until June. Unfortunately, it sort of got lost in everything that was going on. It's really sad because I think *Gaslighter* was a fantastic album. They eventually did that tour in 2022.

yeah the fascist creep has been going since the beginning in this country and unfortunately on our watch they've gotten full control.
So telling how they raise up loudmouthed political artists like Rid Rock and Nugent but everyone else needs to shut up and sing or die.

I was reading some of the comments and I think the big that hit them at this time was the American bravado at the time, plus their statement came during a foreign show. If they had been in America, especially in Texas it would have just been a big statement.
Definitely a great song.
