The first time I met my father-in-law's second wife (my in-laws were already divorced and remarried before I came into the picture) she told me that the lipstick I was wearing has the perfect amount of blue in it for your skin tone". I was SO confused! I'm not a Smurf. I was wearing burgundy/maroon/cranberry lipstick. I had no idea the woman was a gifted painter. I'm not even sure I knew that red and blue together make burgundy/purple, depending on the amount of each. As I got to know her, I realize that you could show her any color, and she would tell you that was exactly X drops of___color and Y drops of___color. I'm LOUSY with colors. Every single time I've picked pink color for a room, or for an entry door, we've had to repaint it. In one case, we had to repaint a room three times because I just couldn't get the right shade of yellow.

We were talking about more advanced colors when my grandson was nearly three, like maroon, burgundy, etc. and he said 'dark red. red plus black.' Yes, little guy--you figured it out better than some of my middle schoolers trying to mix colors!

I got made fun of by friends for my "fancy colors" theory, which is that many colors/neutrals have a corresponding fancy version: * Pearl is fancy white * Silver is fancy gray * Bronze is fancy brown or orange, depending on the shade and so on. Also, wedding colors often follow the pattern of one neutral, one regular color, and one fancy color.

My husband is blue-green color blind. He comes up with some crazy description of items in either of those colors, and despises turquoise.

Curiously, "maroon" is also a verb that describes the act of disembarking a miscreant on a deserted island and sailing away leaving said miscreant to die of thirst or starvation or predation or disease. Kinda like something a navy would do.

No thinking, just start painting with it. If you see Maroon as "Navy Red," then you have found a way to make Red feel formal, quiet, and ancient.

I work at a retail clothing store. It’s probably someone’s full time job to think up color names for all the clothing we sell. I rarely guess correctly when I see some new color come in. “ Toasted Coconut” WTF is that?

There was a shipping accident in the English Channel many years ago. A freighter loaded with red dye collided with a sister ship carrying blue dye. Both crews were marooned.

I think that makes sense. I’d also propose that pink isn’t just light red but rather a color between purple and red (similar to how teal and turquoise are colors between green and blue) and that indigo and even periwinkle are between blue and purple

This very opinion spawned a *vicious* argument on Tumblr once. People saying that "Navy" refers to uniforms of *The* Navy, and they were not nice about it. So anyway, I'm a navy red supporter.

Different people as well as different languages divide the color spectrum differently. The color spectrum is scientific but not the words we’ve chosen to describe the various shades. Look up any color description on the internet (royal blue, crimson, maroon) and they’ll show you an array of colors many of which won’t agree with your idea of what that color is.

Make an unsaturated brown and add red pigment and you will get maroon. Make any unsaturated navy blue and add red pigment and you will get botched magenta.

this broke something in my brain actually. maroon is just darkened unsaturated red and navy is darkened unsaturated blue and theyre basically the same vibe but with different base colors. burgundy throws me off too — is that maroon but more red? or more purple? nobody ever agrees

ok this is going to bug me now because you're completely right. Like how did I never think of it that way. Navy is dark blue, maroon is dark red, the logic checks out perfectly. I wonder what navy yellow would be, like mustard maybe?
