A guy once said to me that maroon is just navy blue but red and I think about this weekly.
For some reason it made so much sense to me. What does Listnook think ?

The first time I met my father-in-law's second wife (my in-laws were already divorced and remarried before I came into the picture) she told me that the lipstick I was wearing has the perfect amount of blue in it for your skin tone".
I was SO confused! I'm not a Smurf. I was wearing burgundy/maroon/cranberry lipstick. I had no idea the woman was a gifted painter. I'm not even sure I knew that red and blue together make burgundy/purple, depending on the amount of each. As I got to know her, I realize that you could show her any color, and she would tell you that was exactly X drops of___color and Y drops of___color.
I'm LOUSY with colors. Every single time I've picked pink color for a room, or for an entry door, we've had to repaint it. In one case, we had to repaint a room three times because I just couldn't get the right shade of yellow.

This reminds me of the first time I ever understood what it meant to have a color *not* work for you! I was in high school so late 90s, I had heard references to colors being for or not for people but like in magazines and movies, this wasn't a concept most midwestern teenagers understood at the time lol. My friend, who I now understand has an olive skin tone, was explaining that she can't wear bright yellow because it makes her look green. This came up because I was holding a yellow shirt, so I'm like no way what, that can't be real, show me. She put that shirt on and it was as if she magically had a green filter over her 😂
Later I realized I can't wear cool colors or I look like a corpse, so I get it now lol

People who can break down colors like that feel like they have some secret superpower. I'm so jealous of people with artistic talent. At best I can build simple projects, but the moment you ask me to add any flair to make it "art" it will immediately look like a 5 year old did it. If you're lucky I will have stayed in the lines.
Hell, I'm not even good at posing figures in a way that doesn't look awful.
8
SMTRodentMar 29, 2026

Artistic talent is a combination of study and putting the work in. If you haven't practiced since you were little, then you'll still paint at the level you reached before you stopped trying to improve. A kid that never did stop painting will turn into a talented adult.

I got made fun of by friends for my "fancy colors" theory, which is that many colors/neutrals have a corresponding fancy version:
* Pearl is fancy white
* Silver is fancy gray
* Bronze is fancy brown or orange, depending on the shade
and so on. Also, wedding colors often follow the pattern of one neutral, one regular color, and one fancy color.

Different people as well as different languages divide the color spectrum differently. The color spectrum is scientific but not the words we’ve chosen to describe the various shades. Look up any color description on the internet (royal blue, crimson, maroon) and they’ll show you an array of colors many of which won’t agree with your idea of what that color is.

State of Origin will be so confusing….
(State of Origin is a rugby game between the states of QLD (playing in maroon jerseys) and NSW (blue jerseys) - you’re either a blues supporter or a maroon supporter)
