This show actually wrote, real, strong female characters instead of"strong female characters".
And Cara Gee was exceptional in it.

I haven't read the books, but also saw someone mention once that Drummer is a minor character for most of the books, and the show amalgamated some male roles into her.
And yeah, funny how that works, do it well and nobody seems to care.

Drummer is relatively minor in the books yeah, at least up to what the show covered. She's probably an amalgamation of 3 female characters and 1 male, all of which exist in the show to an extent.
She's mostly an expanded-on book Drummer, mixed with Michio Pa for her major S5+ storyline.
Sam Rosenberg for her repetoir with Naomi.
And what happens to Drummer in S3 (exoskeleton) happens to Bull instead.
I just finished the books and the show did a great job improving on Drummer's book character.

(And for those who haven't read the books, Sam Rosenberg is a woman. She's basically the "Friends/possibly more with Naomi" portion of the TV Drummer character. Sam does actually show up in the show but she's only in a scene or two.)

As others have said, personality-wise, she's a mix of two female characters, Michio Pa and Camina Drummer.
Role-wise, she takes the place of Sam Rosenberg (another female character) as Naomi's close friend.
Situation-wise, her story in the second half of S3, which adapts the 3rd book, is taken from Bull, a male character, but she doesn't take too much from Bull's character or personality, other than maybe a strong sense of stubbornness and perseverance that was already present due to Michio Pa's influence.

Book fans were remarkably forgiving (bless them!) of the many profound changes the show made. I'm a Tolkien book fan (for comparison), and 25 years later, there are people still complaining about the movies. Expanse fans didn't spoil the TV fandom with nonstop whining. And Drummer was awesome.

When written well you just enjoy the characters for who they are instead of gender being their defining characteristic. Also casting absolutely nailed it.
Bobby is a badass because she's a large Samoan Martian Marine who could break you with her hands. She isn't a 4'10 woman that looks like a breeze could blow her over.

Just because someone's muscles aren't cut like a bodybuilder with low bodyfat doesn't mean they aren't strong. She was absolutely believable as a strong woman. Some of them possibly but I completely disagree overall. The villains in particular are mostly cardboard cutouts, show Drummer is a much better character than pretty much all the characters she's based on combined, Amos is fantastic.
To be honest I think the show is better in *almost* every way, which is super rare and was likely hugely helped by one of the authors being there and not being afraid to change and improve on things from the book where necessary while still keeping it largely faithful.
The only major thing I can think of the books doing better is that they just have more time to spend going into detail about the setting and technology and the events have a little more breathing room.
9
MyTwistedPenMar 22, 2026

I agree on that. Ashford in the book is a barely a 2-dimensional villain that barely has any proper character. While in the series, is a well thought out character that grows through out the series to be something more than just revenge against the inner planets.

Naomi is really the only character that comes out worse in the show than the books, and even then really only during the marco arc

should I watch the show if it end on a cliffhanger? I know the last 3 books arent adapted
4
NightWriter500Mar 22, 2026

It’s not a cliffhanger. In the books they jump to several decades later. The show didn’t do that part, or the setup to it, in order to not end on a cliffhanger. The place where they ended was a perfect place to wrap it all up.
They did have some scenes for where the story was going to go if they didn’t end it there, which don’t exactly make sense now, but it’s fine. If anyone picks up the show later - and it could be 10 years later - they’ll make sense again.
31
LettersWordsMar 22, 2026

> The show didn’t do that part, or the setup to it
I disagree, there was a lot the could have left out if they wanted to make it a more conclusive ending for the TV show.
Spoilers for the last 3 books >!The last season of the TV show does plenty of setup for Book 7. It adapted Strange Dogs, which is not particularly relevant to any of the events that happened in the TV show, but is incredibly relevant to the events of Book 7 and beyond regarding Duarte's semi-immortality. It sets up the Transport Union as well, which is also fairly important to the events of Book 7 since they are the main faction that Laconia has to defeat after the timeskip.!<
3
NightWriter500Mar 22, 2026
+2
I mean, I mentioned that specifically in my comment. It still doesn’t make it a cliffhanger ending.
2
LettersWordsMar 22, 2026
You said that they didn't do the "setup to it". I'm arguing they did, because they included scenes that don't make sense to include, as you say. Honestly, I think they might have actually done MORE setup for the last three books in season 6 than actually happens in book 6. A lot of the setup for books 7-9 happens in novellas like Strange Dogs and The Vital Abyss which only a fraction of the book readers will have read.
0
NightWriter500Mar 22, 2026
+1
It’s the setup to the setup, really. But none of that matters. They didn’t end the series on a cliffhanger, and any extraneous scenes still doesn’t make it a cliffhanger.

It’s just like working out, you’re exercising your brain.

The show finishes the primary story from the first six books. The final season does have teasers for what books 7-9 but it's not much.
Because the final books have a huge time jump and they were written during the show it actually works out that you can watch the six seasons of the show and then just read the final 3 books to finish out the story. There's only really one main character difference because the actor got fired and character killed off in the show but even with that you can still pick it up.

Time for a rewatch! One of my favorite series of all time.
But when it first came out on SciFi network, I had trouble getting into it. I gave it a second chance when I had a long trans-Atlantic flight. I downloaded all of season 1 to my tablet and binged it with the subtitles on. That made a big difference, to help understand the Belter dialect.
So once you get through all the world building in the first few episodes, the show remains very solid through its whole run.

It’s not often that an actor’s performance measures up to the character in a book. It’s even more rare for the actor’s character to surpass the character. Cara Gee’s Drummer is one of the few examples of that happening, and she far surpasses even this meager description of accomplishment. She destroyed that role, so much that when I think of The Expanse - book or show - she’s who I picture.
16
ironwolf1Mar 22, 2026

Drummer in the show got a few other character’s arcs folded into her own because they liked Cara Gee so much and wanted to give her more to do. Some of her best stuff, like the whole arc here on the Behemoth with Ashford and then also her pirate family in season 5 were separate characters in the books. I honestly think that Drummer featuring more in some of the later books was also a result of Cara Gee’s performances on the show, since the authors both worked on it while also writing the final books at the same time.

Oh I just had to watch this, didn't I. Guess it's time to start re-watching The Expanse, sorry everything else I had to do in life the next few weeks...

Love the Expanse.
Fun fact: The ring expedition only occurred as it did because a horny belter teen was trying to impress his cousin to get into her pants.

No, he'd already been in her pants. But while he was traveling she dumped him for his brother. He was trying to get her back.

Ah, I think it's a bit different in the books. I don't think he ever slept with her in AG.

I think I'm due for a re-watch, but from what I remember of the show I thought it was implied that they had already been together when she dumped him for his brother.

Great example of an actor being so good that they just had to expand the role way beyond the source material.

It was brilliant how they changed her character in the show to tell the stories of several other different characters from the book.

Wouldn't they have written it that way in the script way before casting? That seems like a pre production decision.

It was between seasons 2 and 3 that they decided to expand the character. Drummer was just Fred Johnson’s chief of security originally. She wasn’t meant to be an important Belter character in her own right. [Gee was only cast as a guest star.](https://www.space.com/the-expanse-telltale-series-cara-gee-interview)

The script for the first season she was in yes. But i believe one of the showrunners stated that they were so impressed with her that for subsequent seasons they moved other minor character plotlines from the books to her to keep the character relevant and give her more material. In the books, the plots that show Drummer covers are actually spread among 3 or 4 different characters.

I really do wish they would just pick up w/ new crews from where they closed with final series/season. Seems like they only opened up more doors for the story line to continue (Sorry No Spoilers).

Not sure there’s a mainstream TV audience for books 7-9. After the time jump, the series goes from war & human politics to alien vs alien mystic stuff.

Torn on whether to tell you this. Don't want to rain on anyone's parade, but you'll be quite confused why Drummer in the books is not matching up with the show. One of the bigger changes they made for the show, and for the better IMO, partly(perhaps mostly) due to Cara Gee's amazing performance. Anyway, show Drummer is mostly a consolidation of three other book characters, whereas book Drummer appears later in the series(than the show) and is more of a minor character.
I always think it best when consuming similar material between mediums, that you keep them compartmentalized instead of trying to compare. They can be appreciated each on their own merits.

It's a great scene for two reasons.

-Wicked-Mar 22, 2026

I mean, it has its own form of closure as much as life itself does. It ends at a point where the book series takes a massive time jump. It's not out of the question that at some point they could try and pick the series back up with how everyone will have aged, but I don't think there are any current plans to do so(at least they're not telling). There's a ton of things that could impede that even if they all wanted to.

Damn I might have to get the books then. This show was truly special

>>pick the series back up again
I hope not. *The Expanse* was lightning in a bottle - production, storytelling, actor quality, even studio financing - all came together for a masterpiece series. Even so, there were showstopper problems- literally.
If the final books are picked up, odds are it’ll be some dodgy studio who’ll stick the “Expanse” name on a cow dung script for a fast buck. Like what happened to *Halo* and *Star Trek.*

I watched the series first and then read the books. I genuinely enjoyed that order. The series goes above and beyond in world building and visuals and this creates an incredible platform from which to get reading.
I’ll skip the arguments about overlap / finishing the story cuz it really felt like one cohesive sci-fi experience to me and didn’t feel any time was wasted.

Like the other commenter I also watched the show first and then read the books and I liked both a lot. Usually books clear any adaption so reading a book might make me hate the show, but I actually think both are great. The show did some things better but the books give more depth to other things. Actors for Avaserala, Bobbie and Drummer were absolutely my favourites in the show. Bobbie is probably my favourite character.

As a fan of the books and the show, Drummer and Ashford are some of the best glow ups from a book to television adaptation in history
Though it helps when the authors are deeply involved in the show writing and the show is a passion project directors cut of the books.

Their over-focus on this actor and the drummer character really damaged the whole series. One of the many mistakes the showeunners made. The show was canceled twice and story never finished btw so that alone back what I’ve said. Go ahead and downvote me idc.
I’m hoping that one day HBO Max will green light a proper R rated version with an adequate budget and better casting. One of the main issues was the casting of Holden and Naomi. Both of those actors are total duds.

ipadspzMar 22, 2026
I see you getting downvoted but I totally agree. It’s what they could manage on the budget they had, but the performances of most (not all) of the cast is pretty mediocre at best. Given the comments here I recognize I’m in the minority, but I found Gee to be nearly unwatchable.
