The Expanse | Drummer Speech

I haven't read the books, but also saw someone mention once that Drummer is a minor character for most of the books, and the show amalgamated some male roles into her. And yeah, funny how that works, do it well and nobody seems to care.

It helps when they don't loudly announce that they're female, they don't need anyone, and they 'get it done.'

When written well you just enjoy the characters for who they are instead of gender being their defining characteristic. Also casting absolutely nailed it. Bobby is a badass because she's a large Samoan Martian Marine who could break you with her hands. She isn't a 4'10 woman that looks like a breeze could blow her over.

Some characters transferred better than others to TV - Amos, of course, was perfect no matter where.

Some of them possibly but I completely disagree overall. The villains in particular are mostly cardboard cutouts, show Drummer is a much better character than pretty much all the characters she's based on combined, Amos is fantastic. To be honest I think the show is better in *almost* every way, which is super rare and was likely hugely helped by one of the authors being there and not being afraid to change and improve on things from the book where necessary while still keeping it largely faithful. The only major thing I can think of the books doing better is that they just have more time to spend going into detail about the setting and technology and the events have a little more breathing room.

Naomi is really the only character that comes out worse in the show than the books, and even then really only during the marco arc And to be fair to the show, a storyline which is built entirely around a character not talking to really anyone is exceptionally difficult to adapt to television. It’s not a cliffhanger. In the books they jump to several decades later. The show didn’t do that part, or the setup to it, in order to not end on a cliffhanger. The place where they ended was a perfect place to wrap it all up. They did have some scenes for where the story was going to go if they didn’t end it there, which don’t exactly make sense now, but it’s fine. If anyone picks up the show later - and it could be 10 years later - they’ll make sense again.

The show finishes the primary story from the first six books. The final season does have teasers for what books 7-9 but it's not much. Because the final books have a huge time jump and they were written during the show it actually works out that you can watch the six seasons of the show and then just read the final 3 books to finish out the story. There's only really one main character difference because the actor got fired and character killed off in the show but even with that you can still pick it up.

1000% if you have even the slightest interest in sci-fi Its one of the greatest sci-fi shows ever made. Right up there with BSG, TNG and the X files.

Once season 1 episode 8 comes the show goes into one of the best stretches of episodes of any show i’ve seen. It last all the way to season 3 ep 6 or 13 depending on what you prefer. Then after that the show is still solid of course with some great moments.

Damn. I might have to give it a new try then. After many good reviews and comments here on reddit i decided to watch it. Saw like half of s01 a couple weeks ago. Wasent sold. But have to take some hours continue watch i guess

I’d argue that Fringe could rival the expanse as best sci fi show. It’s also so damn good

Drummer slowly became my favorite character in the show. She was just so god damn good in that role. Just a badass female character that was done right. She portrayed a hard mfer that was tough as nails, but without needing to be made into a the stereotypical "butchy lesbian" trope.

Does Gunny Bobbi Draper mean nothing to you ? (That aside, Amos is absolutely a goated badass)

The Telltale game is great. Highly recommend. The bonus Avasarala episode was great.

It’s pretty short and not a typical game as it’s mostly dialogue choices plus some walking/floating around through areas but if you like Drummer it’s a good take.

Drummer in the show got a few other character’s arcs folded into her own because they liked Cara Gee so much and wanted to give her more to do. Some of her best stuff, like the whole arc here on the Behemoth with Ashford and then also her pirate family in season 5 were separate characters in the books. I honestly think that Drummer featuring more in some of the later books was also a result of Cara Gee’s performances on the show, since the authors both worked on it while also writing the final books at the same time.

I mean book Drummer and show Drummer are basically totally different characters tbh.

Always got bummed that Jared Harris ended up dipping from the show. Even the few scenes he was in he killed it as Anderson Dawes

I’m biased as f*** but I love just about all of the characters. This story is simply rad as f***. I wish more people watched it and read the books

Same here, its also feels wrong not to mention how hard Miller, Bobbie, and especially Prax just ate up the screen whenever they were on. Here’s hoping the rumors of film finales is true!

The actor that plays Amos might be the best casted actor in the history of TV. He looked, acted and sounded exactly like I had in my head when I read the books, years before the show.

The acting on this show is, by and large, not on the level of the great dramas that get Emmy nominated.

It was between seasons 2 and 3 that they decided to expand the character. Drummer was just Fred Johnson’s chief of security originally. The script for the first season she was in yes. But i believe one of the showrunners stated that they were so impressed with her that for subsequent seasons they moved other minor character plotlines from the books to her to keep the character relevant and give her more material. In the books, the plots that show Drummer covers are actually spread among 3 or 4 different characters.

Didn't finish the 2nd avenue of the story. Otherwise S6 properly concludes the 1st avenue of the story.

I’ve been surprised thus far how close book 1 is to the show. Also, I’ve never been a big literary sci-fi fan, but really love the writing style of the books.

Damn I might have to get the books then. This show was truly special

Even so, there were showstopper problems- literally. If the final books are picked up, odds are it’ll be some dodgy studio who’ll stick the “Expanse” name on a cow dung script for a fast buck. Like what happened to *Halo* and *Star Trek.*
