The Guardian TV series with Simon Baker

Posted by Any_Coyote6662

Some love it. Some hate it. I personally really like it. I don't understand why Simon is such a jerk to women though. I feel like I should understand him but I feel like I've missed something major about him. What's your theory as to why he is so emotionally and socially stunted?

the whole cast is excellent. during the last episode i watched, I was appreciating the good casting for making the whole ensemble work so well. im even interested by the supporting roles on the show. its really well done. I'm okay with not fully understanding Nick. it may even be one of the reasons I like the show more- he leaves me wanting to know him better.

I liked the show and it had a good cast. I thought Simon was great in the role. At the time, I had no idea he was Australian. It surprised me hearing his real accent when I randomly saw him on a late show on tv. I love his Australian accent btw, it just took me by surprise. I was so used to him as Nick.

I watched because I knew Simon Baker from Australian TV and film. It's awhile since I first watched it, though I did catch some repeats of S2 on daytime TV a few years ago here. It was a fairly masculine show focused on Nick's strained relationship with his father, the family law firm, and his buddy who worked there. Nick was a corporate lawyer arrested for cocaine possession and use. Then required to do the 12 steps and pro bono legal work for community services to avoid disbarment. Then he fostered and adopted Shannon in S2 as a single parent. He handled people by being superficially charming and women by flirting to get what he wanted. His major relationship was with his old boss Luisa, a relationship that wasn't healthy for either of them. It was a strange mix of case of the week corporate law and juvenile court cases, where a surprising number of cases involved Nick's friends and family in scams or some way. Peppered with frequent relapses by Nick. It was competently made and Baker and Coleman were good together. But it seemed like an idea they pitched and got greenlit, but it never felt like the show had a direction or was going anywhere for three seasons and successful enough that they wouldn't change anything. Until it was cancelled without any sort of resolution except Nick planning to move to yet another firm. There were probably twenty better shows in the early 2000s that I remember better.
