Title Correction: [Amanda Seyfried is not returning for the sequel](https://variety.com/2026/film/news/kirsten-dunst-housemaid-sequel-sydney-sweeney-1236696872/) > Amanda Seyfried and Brandon Sklenar, who play the husband and wife whose perfect life is far from what it seems in the original, won’t be back for the sequel as the story focuses on a new family.

Dunst last year: >“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money?” Dunst this year: Minecraft 2 & Housemaid 2

Plemons is doing artsy stuff with Lanthimos, so Dunst has to step up and earn the cash.

I don't blame Jake. He was in so many amazing movies, literally some of the best you could watch. Got no awards or recognition. How it's time to have some fun films, watch once and never watch again type stuff
38
One-Feedback678 Mar 24, 2026 +11
Shit like Roadhouse must be satisfying to make. You just get to hang out in a beach town for a few months. Kinda sad that that he goes weirdly underrated though. I get the vibe maybe he just doesn't do the "networking" side of acting much.
11
AneeshRai7 Mar 24, 2026 +7
Not getting nominated for Nightcrawler probably broke him when in fact he should have won the Oscar.
7

It's actually fun to watch a talented actor like Jake star in ridiculous "turn your brain off" action movies

39
AWorldwithoutSin Mar 23, 2026 +23
She's publicly stated her early 2000s spider-man to rom-com era was that and it gave her depression. Then she got more selective about roles.
23
PersimmonWorried2155 Mar 23, 2026 +2
I am so surprised seeing Maggie Gyllenhall's box office earning. Then hearing she has a new project. You know, movies are supposed to make money, right?
2
Leroyp331 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Actors have to cycle projects like this. It's part of the gig until you really are just a billion dollar draw actor. They used to say one for you, one for me. Although I am not sure which one is whom

He’s going to be in the newest Hunger Games and he’s rumored to the newest Beast in X-Men.

His voice was great for Beast
7
bluehawk232 Mar 23, 2026 +19
Have doubts on Xmen. Marvel still doesn't know what to do with them and it's disappointing they are bringing the fox xmen back yet again when they should be selling audiences on new actors. Hard to sell a new professor x or magneto when you're just like hey remember Patrick Stewart. Good luck to the actor that takes over Wolverine as well
19
NeoNoireWerewolf Mar 23, 2026 +7
They’re already casting new actors for an X-Men revival after Secret Wars. >!Sadie Sink is playing Jean Grey in the upcoming Spider-Man film.!< Secret Wars is going to basically reboot the whole MCU. There might be a few actors who carry over, but it’s Marvel’s last ditch effort to revive the movies. I think the bigger question is whether audiences will care after that.
7
DOuGHtOp Mar 23, 2026 +8
Not outright confirmed
8
NeoNoireWerewolf Mar 23, 2026 +1
No, but between the leaks and the teaser trailer, it's as close as you can get to it without them making a press announcement.
1
duaneap Mar 23, 2026 +8
Oh, I’m not saying he doesn’t do sell out stuff, but I suspect he’s more on track for the auld gold statue than KD. Maybe they should do a sequel together. Power of the Cat.
8
CakeMadeOfHam Mar 23, 2026 +18
They both should have been nominated and won for Civil War.
18
Apotropaic_ Mar 23, 2026 +7
Watched her in marie antoinette recently and i gotta say she killed it. Not sure about oscars worthy but she played that with the young naivete imo
7
randohipponamo Mar 23, 2026 +6
She’s done plenty of serious movies and Todd has done plenty of funny movies. How is that profitable for Frito Lay?
6
HotOne9364 Mar 23, 2026 +41
The MCU's just a phone call away.

Mary Jane as Iron Spider?
28
psychoacer Mar 23, 2026 +9
Can't wait to see her and Sweeney in some Spider-Girls gang
9
Stock_College_8108 Mar 23, 2026 +14
Sydney’s style is best suited for projects like The Housemaid & Euphoria. She plays up a very ditzy type of sex appeal not the clever/manipulative vixens you see in Marvel. I know Sydney is the biggest sex symbols with boys and men of a certain age but I just can’t imagine Black Cat with monotone vocal cry.
14
psychoacer Mar 23, 2026 +7
She's already Spider-Woman from Madame Webb though
7
Stock_College_8108 Mar 23, 2026 +3
It’s not apart of the Disney-Sony main line canon and Sony discontinued their future plans for the SSU so she wouldn’t appear again. She could theoretically still be cast as another character in the MCU. It’s been done before. I just don’t think her current acting style fits any MCU character.
3
FrameworkisDigimon Mar 23, 2026 +3
>I just don’t think her current acting style fits any MCU character. Is your point that you can't look at any Marvel character and think "yes, this is in Sweeney's wheelhouse" or that you look at the MCU and you think "I can't imagine an MCU film where a role in Sweeney's wheelhouse would make sense"? Because I was saying the former pretty much literally yesterday but I've changed my mind. You could easily do an interpretation of Riot at Xavier's where the Cuckoos -- who are emotionless stepford smilers -- don't keep it together when the five in one becomes the three in one. It wouldn't be how the comics did it -- the characters barely changed -- but going from five to three causing a breakdown would be a logical character development. I think Sweeney can do that. Would I want her to play them? No, she's too old but if you were to make them ~30 then it works.
3
Stock_College_8108 Mar 23, 2026 +1
That’s a good point. They could definitely alter a character to fit within her range.
1
psychoacer Mar 23, 2026 +2
It's Sony/venom/Morbius canon until they write over it. You never know what Sony might keep due to what they think can boost sales.
2
Comic_Book_Reader Mar 23, 2026 +12
Not having her pop up in No Way Home was kind of a missed opportunity though to be fair, it's impressive that they even pulled off that logistical nightmare of a movie.

Minecraft will more than likely be a hit. I tried watching Housemaid and couldn’t get past 20 minutes of it.
5
Exotic_Way_7465 Mar 24, 2026 +4
The Housemaid 2 will also be a hit though. The first one has made 396 million worldwide on a 35 million dollar budget.

After what she went through with lars von trier i think she’s righr!
2

I don't think I've heard her say anything bad about working with Trier.
1
CombOne7189 Mar 23, 2026 +2
That was not the issue! The problem was his statement about hitler that done a lot damage to kirsten’s image and she was supposed to get a nomination that year

It’s based on a book series, but yeah Amanda’s character isn’t in the second book. She has a passing mention by her daughter CeCe in the third book who has a significant role
43
mikeweasy Mar 23, 2026 +10
I read the first two books, have not started the third. I was just hoping the movies would only have Millie and Enzo return.
10
All1012 Mar 23, 2026 +12
Ya kinda odd. Maybe they mean as a producer again?
12
InjuredGods Mar 23, 2026 +12
They edited the title on the website and no mention of Amanda is there anymore, so I'm guessing it was bad reporting.
12
ladymacbitch Mar 23, 2026 +25
i doubt it because she was pretty vocal about how her producer credit on the first one was purely a vanity credit she even said she didn’t know she was a producer on it until they were well into shooting

Somehow Mary Jane returned!!!
1
AggravatingOlive9458 Mar 23, 2026 +25
I see this as the opposite. Roofman and civil war to Minecraft 2 and housemaid 2?
25
mjsamps Mar 23, 2026 +42
She’s actively talked in the press recently about wanting to get paid, so I think this is nothing more than an actress getting her bag. And good for her.
42
fartlight Mar 23, 2026 +25
She paid her dues after Spider-Man. Gave great performances in small movies where she more than likely lost money. No shame in making things even, she deserves it
25
riegspsych325 Mar 23, 2026 +18
helps that she’s also a great actor and has never phoned it in (except for maybe being the kidnapped damsel in distress again in Spider-Man 3)
18
OdepiusNecks Mar 23, 2026 +8
Can’t really blame her for that last one. When you realize that your character, despite having potential for depth and nuance, is only ever going to be a cliche for the hero to save you kinda stop giving a shit.
8
Inside_Dimension2319 Mar 23, 2026 +4
I always hated her as an actress solely because MJ was annoying in Spider-Man. Then Fargo S2 dropped and I was like “oh my god Kirsten Dunst I was wrong about you all these years.”
4
riegspsych325 Mar 23, 2026 +3
I mean, they did 3 movies in a row where MJ got kidnapped by the villain in the beginning of Act 3. I’d be tired of it, too
3
southernfirefly13 Mar 23, 2026 +5
Agreed! Jesse Plemons ain’t the only one who deserves a recognized career! I always felt that Kirsten wasn’t treated fairly, she’s an excellent actress who never got her dues. I hope this is somewhat of a comeback for her. Not that she needs a comeback, but more so she deserves another show at widely acknowledged and appreciate exposure.
5
dadvader Mar 23, 2026 +3
But hey, that was well over 20 years ago. Money's gotta run dry at some point. Minecraft 2 will be more than enough to reimburse that though.
3
mjsamps Mar 23, 2026 +2
*And* put her money where her mouth is and made 3 of her 7 movies over the past 10 years with female filmmakers.
2
AgentOfSPYRAL Mar 23, 2026 +14
We know what Kiki is about. Shes gonna do these movies for the bag then get right back to the auteur grind.
14
TyposIncoming Mar 23, 2026 +2
Get that bag girl
2
babysamissimasybab Mar 23, 2026 +2
It's weird she said she joined Minecraft 2 so she could be in a super successful movie when Civil War is the biggest A24 movie ever. It's not like she's just bumming around in duds.
2
CaroylOldersee Mar 23, 2026 +6
But she’s also not regularly in films that perform in a big way, regardless of whether it’s A24’s biggest film or Spider Man or Jumanji. It’s safe to say she’s in things that a lot of folks don’t see, so she has every right to want to be in more mainstream stuff…
6
Exotic_Way_7465 Mar 24, 2026 +1
The biggest A24 movie is Marty Supreme
1
babysamissimasybab Mar 24, 2026 +1
That came out after Civil War
1
Exotic_Way_7465 Mar 24, 2026 +1

I thought Amanda seyfried’s story was over in the first housemaid movie? I love her as an actress but idk why is she coming back. I didn’t read the books by the way, so if her character comes back in the books, then I’m fine with it
33
Vegetable_Hearing477 Mar 23, 2026 +23
It’s not the kind of movie which relies on good writing lol
23
Waste-Replacement232 Mar 24, 2026 +1

1
InjuredGods Mar 23, 2026 +10
She's like very quickly mentioned in the second book I believe but doesn't play any type of noticeable role.
10
vladtud Mar 23, 2026 +5
She doesn’t but the plot of the second book doesn’t forbid her from appearing. If anything, it will probably be a small guest role at the start.

I fear that the good-looking mother of 2 in her 40s may in fact be a M***...

She's 40 and has two children, there's not much of a way around it.
33

My bro she would be in the "mature" category on most sites
8
JustOneSexQuestion Mar 23, 2026 +7

Dunst in the “I’m just gonna get my bag” era.
19
riegspsych325 Mar 23, 2026 +14
nothing wrong with doing that but it is a bonus when the actors have *fun* doing it. Like Jennifer Lawrence, she’s got an Oscar but has no problem doing a goofball comedy where she beats up people in the n***

5
AnUnbeatableUsername Mar 23, 2026 +23
Fine I'll say the thing most r/movies users want to say: "They're making a sequel to The Housemaid but not for Bullet Train?!"
23
dabocx Mar 23, 2026 +9
I know its a joke but for those curious. The housemaid made 400mil on a 35 million dollar budget. Bullet train cost 80-90 million and made 240.
9
frauleinforever Mar 23, 2026 +4
One is an iconic thrill ride and the other is bullet train.
4
joesen_one Mar 24, 2026 +1
I always feel so gaslit whenever people here talk about Bullet Train. There was barely any buzz despite people begging to see the movie in theaters, and most on here saw it on Netflix. Meanwhile same crowd didn't go for The Fall Guy.
1
Rare-Age-6157 Mar 23, 2026 +5
Kirsten Dunst joining this is a casting directors fever dream. The Housemaid Cinematic Universe is getting stacked.
5
BitcoinMD Mar 24, 2026 +1
Kirsten will return in Housemaid: Endgame
1
Academic_Flatworm752 Mar 23, 2026 +24
I really enjoyed the books that this is based on and I love both Kirsten and Amanda but I just cannot with Sidney
24
Bobby_Newpooort Mar 23, 2026 +12
She just has those dead eyes and Amanda Seyfried wiped the floor with her in the first movie. I'd imagine Kirsten will do the same
12
vadergeek Mar 23, 2026 +3
I liked her in Euphoria, I liked her in White Lotus, but other than that I've never really seen her give a good performance. Very situational.
3
RepresentativeEye993 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I think it's because she naturally has a very awkward energy, so it lends itself well to characters where she's supposed to bring that vibe. this is why her acting in anyone but you was so painful to watch
1

Amanda Seyfried in the Sequel?
19

Glad she’s back because she absolutely carried the first one.

Yeah, that's weird, no? Do you think she's going to team up with Sweeney?
11

I haven't read the books, but I would bet real money that she's going to be the "Alfred" to Sweeney's "Batman".
12
hockat Mar 23, 2026 +2
yes, her character is briefly in the second book, helps set up the plot for it basically
2
braumbles Mar 23, 2026 +30
I'm on board. The first was a pleasant surprise.
30
z_102 Mar 23, 2026 +18
We need more mid-budget semi-e***** thrillers, especially if Seyfried (and Dunst) are there to carry the film.
18
Obyson Mar 23, 2026 +2
Pleasant alright 😉
2
ninjyte Mar 23, 2026 +5
Kirsten Dunst switching back to paycheck films is the real recession indicator
5
TJ_McWeaksauce Mar 23, 2026 +15
I've read summaries of The Housemaid series. The title character is basically a serial killer who keeps getting away with the murder. She's kinda like the Punisher, but a woman who only targets abusive husbands.
15
TheMichaelScott Mar 23, 2026 +5
This must be a bot because this is completely wrong lol

Paul Feig just can’t help himself, like with A Simple Favor 2, and he has enough clout that no one is saying no.
1
BactaBobomb Mar 23, 2026 +2
Wow, they fast tracked this one. Makes sense! I actually LOVED the first movie, but I'm nervous about a sequel. I understand there are other books and it's probably pulling from those, but I'm just not sure how it will pan out. If it goes down the path that the first movie ended on, I don't know if I'll like it.
2
dennismfrancisart Mar 24, 2026 +2
Ms. Seyfried owned that movie. Damn! I can't imagine this sequel being as good without her.

First was alright but Sydney Sweeney was an anchor around that movie’s neck. She was awful in it but I guess will keep getting roles since she’s hot.

I guess this movie didn't really land for me. Found it pretty ham fisted with kinda bad writing. Also thought this movie was proof that the whole Gen Z wants less gratuitous nudity is nonsense. Felt like every other scene they were like, how do we get Sydney's t*** out? But hey, I've never been on the anti-nudity train, it doesn't always work but I don't mind it most of the time.

Lol the plot of this movie somewhat reminds me of the fake show *Payback Ladies* that Sally gets cast for in the show Barry.

I’ve only seen the movie and have no knowledge of the books but correct me if I’m wrong but she completely Inspector Gadget’d her way out of trouble in the first movie. Her character demonstrated no skills to suggest she skilled her way out of trouble.

It was such a bad movie. Surprising it’s getting a sequel.

[It made nearly $400M on a $35M budget.](https://www.boxofficemojo.com/title/tt27543632/) A sequel was all but guaranteed.

73% on rotten tomatoes. 92% audience score. Financial success. Why is it surprising it’s getting a sequel?

Did you actually watch the movie? Or are you just parroting what others have bandwagoned?

Movie was fun and entertaining, thanks to Seyfried and despite the dullness of Sydney Sweeney. Not to say I'm interested in a sequel, though. I'll have to wait and see on that.

Money is more important than quantity for studios unfortunately, they’ll shit out slop until it starts losing money
