‘The Last Airbender’ Leaked Online. Some Fans Say Paramount Deserves the Fallout
After the full movie leaked, animators mourned the chance to release their work as intended. Others feel the leak is justified in light of Paramount’s marketing blunders and association with Trump.

That. Was. PHENOMINAL! Next time Paramount, keep it in theatres so that people will want to actually pay for it.

I doubt the studio will learn any such lesson. They’ll see it flop and say “we’ll never do a similar IP again” lmfao

Yeah stick it to paramount… but let’s ignore that this also really hurts the people who worked on it.

Creepy_Ad_1315 Apr 16, 2026 +6
Maybe the people at the top? Your average entertainment worker got paid to do this job and they might get paid to do the next. The same is basically every other movie. It's not like there was profit sharing with the lower ranks.

Icebreaker21 Apr 17, 2026 +4
Yeah man animators aren’t getting residuals on shieet haha
4
Swagut123 6 days ago
But it does hurt your portfolio and possible future prospects if the project you worked on was a flop, which will likely happen if everyone just watches the leak, and doesn't bother paying for it.
0
MrCrankunity 4 days ago +2
There is no way to pay for it anyways. Yeah, some people would have and will subscribe to Paramount+ for this movie, but that won't be a sole decision for most.
2
turb0_encapsulator Apr 16, 2026 +68
I'm torn between stealing from the people who worked hard on this and stealing from f****** Paramount.
68
Chu_Kiddin_Me_Or_Wha Apr 16, 2026 +74
The people who worked on it have already been paid.
74
souleman96 Apr 16, 2026 +13
And, I assume, are the ones that leaked it.
13
superdoom52 Apr 16, 2026 +15
Afaik someone responsible for sending pre-release clips to influencers accidentally sent out the whole movie, doesn't look like this was a malicious act Edit: according to the THR article about the leak this is false, and was just a joke made by the person who leaked snippets, the full leak was released by a different singapore based hacker
15
Chu_Kiddin_Me_Or_Wha Apr 16, 2026 +5
In instances like this, i’d say its probably a vendor that did. Or if an inside job, just lack of content security because of cost cutting.
5
ChickenShampoo Apr 16, 2026 +2
Avatar studios has future films planned too that will be affected by the lack of subscriptions and official viewership this leak will cause. Wouldn't be surprised if the Korra movie gets scrapped because of this.
2
SwingFinancial9468 Apr 18, 2026 +2
The people who actually made and animated this movie got their check years ago. If you watch this movie on Paramount Plus, the only people who’ll make money are David Ellison’s goons.

Watson349B Apr 16, 2026 +78
I really liked it. Zuko felt lackluster and wasted. But Sokka was still Sokka. Toph and Katara were great and made the movie for me. Missed Azula especially knowing season 4 was meant to be her redemption arc. Villain was a little generic but relatable and I enjoyed the pace. Hope somehow this leads to more film with Aang or a continuation show.

Ok_Surprise_4090 Apr 16, 2026 +46
Toph and Zuko got to do almost *nothing*. It makes sense in the context of the story, but it's still a shame. This is a theater movie if there ever was one, it'd look amazing on an IMAX screen, and Paramount absolutely deserves the ire it's getting for trying to bury it on their third-tier streaming service.
46
Watson349B Apr 16, 2026 +15
Yeah at least Toph was funny in the small role. I love Zuko but he added absolutely nothing, they should have left him out for the next one.
15
DoubleKneeDropDick Apr 16, 2026 +7
He did tell Toph dude was attractive. So there's always that.
7
Watson349B Apr 16, 2026 +2
You right that was his highlight and I did laugh felt weird hearing Invincible come out of Zukos mouth to make that joke lol

Pen_dragons_pizza Apr 16, 2026 +4
I just don’t get why they would take it out of theatres. They do not have much at all to release this year and this would be something good to put into theatres and likely make a bit of money, since animated/anime movies have shown in the past year.
4
tysonarts Apr 16, 2026 +5
Between this and cancelling TMNT Ronin movie and game, killing Star Trek you can see a pattern forming. And that pattern is mismanagment of their ips
5
Ok_Surprise_4090 Apr 16, 2026 +2
Every studio suddenly remembered that animation can be immensely popular and profitable after Kpop Demon Hunters, but Paramount is so f****** inept that they decided to go straight-to-streaming on a AAA movie for a beloved franchise with a huge international audience.
2
Doppelfrio Apr 16, 2026 +4
Idk why you’re giving Toph a pass. She was barely in the movie. Maybe even less than Zuko
4
Classic-Lychee-7406 Apr 16, 2026 +3
Hows the animation?

Where did you watch it on?
1
Kitchen-Bed7313 5 days ago +1
I won’t say what because I don’t want to spoil for those who are still on the fence about watching it, but that scene at the very ending gave me a joy that childhood me (who grew up watching the series) always needed. Literally went to bed smiling like an idiot after watching it. Definitely the pick me up I needed after how some of the other parts of the plot ended bittersweet

They do deserve it. F*** Paramount.
27
Efflux Apr 16, 2026 +5
They could still put it in theaters. I'd go. I have not watched the leak, but I also won't watch it on Paramount plus.
5
AVeryRipeBanana Apr 16, 2026 +1
And here I am, already having seen 1 of the 3 options. Totally willing to support the creatives by watching the OFFICIAL release, whatever form it comes in, and buying merch. I just want more Avatar, especially seeing the potential is there.
1
Swagut123 6 days ago +1
Tbh the movie will likely flop and paramount will drop the IP, which will go back to being in limbo for a while. The leak + the lukewarm reception is the nail

Darth-_-Maul Apr 15, 2026 +15
Was a good movie. Tagah was a monster air bender.
15
ShotenDesu Apr 16, 2026 +2
Really makes you think how deadly air benders can be if they weren't all monks. The 2 non peaceful air benders we've seen have been menaces. The air bullet was awesome!

Paramount f****** sucks. The creators, however I feel bad for them.
3
Top_Report_4895 Apr 16, 2026 +14
I would say the artists didn't deserved it.
14
satanssweatycheeks Apr 16, 2026 +5
They all got paid already. Not unless the actors and directors forfeited a salary and instead wanting percentage of the ticket sales. But that’s rare. And sometimes pans out better than getting paid. Most times though the director and actors have already been paid and the main people taking a dent are the studios.
5
deadscreensky Apr 16, 2026 +26
From the article: >Jason Scheier, a production designer at Sony Animation who worked on the film for several months, tells WIRED it’s disappointing to see fans share the leaked movie without regard for the creatives’ future career prospects. >“Revenue determines if sequels get greenlit and how a film covers its production and marketing costs. This is devastating to the team and to the studios producing the movie.”
26
ConkerPrime Apr 16, 2026 +3
I would agree if Paramount had not clearly killed any chance of a sequel with a direct to streaming release. The execs have voiced no confidence with that decision. Execs, especially from Silicon Valley, consider it a weakness to admit a mistake so even if the movie kicks all the butt on release, they will not back down from their take.
3
deadscreensky Apr 16, 2026 +1
>I would agree if Paramount had not clearly killed any chance of a sequel with a direct to streaming release. It's wild pretending this not even a year after KPop Demon Hunters. Or that streaming movies don't routinely get streaming sequels! Or that their direct to streaming strategy might not have changed before release. Paramount isn't exactly a consistent, predictable company.

0exa Apr 16, 2026 +3
Netflix is not the same as Paramount+. Who has that service anyway? I for one would not have bought a subscription to watch it either way.
3
SwingFinancial9468 Apr 18, 2026 +1
What’s even on Paramount Plus? Nickelodeon shows and originals no one watches? The only thing they have of value is the old Star Trek shows. And I already own secondhand copies of them.
1
AVeryRipeBanana Apr 16, 2026 +2
While I agree that overall, animation is on the rise again, we’d be fools to pretend KPDH is the new standard more-so than a standout. To me personally, I don’t know what to think of all this mess. Paramount have been, and will likely continue to be, TERRIBLE stewards of this franchise. To me it seems the only reason they even picked it back up off the shelf to begin with was because Netflix was working on a (at the time) highly anticipated adaptation with (again, at the time) the creators on board. It’s only about the money to them, and yet they continue to make boneheaded decisions in that department.
2
satanssweatycheeks Apr 16, 2026 -4
In 2026 revenue doesn’t matter as Netflix and countless other studios have cancelled profitable shit only to green light stuff that doesn’t make money. Paramount gets what it wanted. Cancelling shows that actually make the network money like Colbert. But letting the studio become a talking head for this regime.
-4
deadscreensky Apr 16, 2026 +14
Since you still (possibly deliberately) don't get it, also from the article: >“Leaking a movie before release undermines the entire effort at its most vulnerable moment,” Schoel wrote. “No marketing buildup, premieres, etc, which harms the film's reputation and **affects future opportunities for the artists who worked on it.”** (Schoel is one of the animators.) You can dress this up in whatever morality you like. I'm no fan of Paramount either. But at least be honest that this leak unquestionably hurt the artists that made the film. This is an enormous blow to their careers.
14
Legalshot Apr 16, 2026 +17
As someone who works in the industry, this is 100% correct. Fans can claim they want to watch to punish Paramount — but the fact is, the artists and creatives are the ones who are being punished, twice now, by both the studio and online fans.

junglespycamp Apr 16, 2026 +9
Anytime a high and mighty Listnookor is asked to give anything up, even just not watching a leaked movie, they won’t. Their commitment to “right” ends at actual self action. So they don’t care about artists.

GroundbreakingAsk468 Apr 16, 2026 +6
Do you know anything about the creators of The Last Airbender? I’m sure they are heartbroken.
6
MealieAI Apr 16, 2026 +3
I feel sorry for the people who made it.

Psychotic_EGG Apr 17, 2026 +1
To be fair, they got paid. They're paid hourly. Profits do not go to them.
1
PkmnMstr10 Apr 18, 2026
And then how about getting paid in the future? If this leak torpedoes revenue, then we're not getting anything after this and they will have to find work again.
0
Psychotic_EGG Apr 18, 2026 +1
You're running on multiple assumptions. That they'll make a sequel even if it's good. Sadly these days the vast majority of entertainment does not get sequels. That even if it gets a sequel they would use the same studio, my buddy is in the industry. They often change studios, though this is less often than just not making a sequel to a good movie. That the same staff will be there. Most studios have a high turn around rate. Mainly because thats how you advance in the industry. And this being leaked won't hurt that. And may even be a good thing, as it will make the movie more memorable. And stand out.
1
coldhandslol Apr 16, 2026 +2
Paramount deserves it but not the people who worked on it.
2
FilmFan2121 Apr 16, 2026 +1
I'm confused. How did this actually happen? Did they send the movie or a link to the movie. How do you even email a movie? Can Paramount go after him?

“That comment set off a round of griping from fans about “identity politics.” Some predicted a “backlash” from those nostalgic for the voices of the TV series cast.” What a bunch of fanboy babies. Then it turns into DEI nonsense. So the Little Mermaid can’t be black but white people can voice ethnic characters. Got it
-21
ibizarox Apr 16, 2026 +9
you realise how a character's voice sounds is very different to how a character looks right?
9
embarrassedalien Apr 16, 2026 +4
They did release the live action Little Mermaid, if that’s what you mean! It was in theater! Woohoo! Rejoice!
4
Creepy_Ad_1315 Apr 16, 2026 +1
Why would the appearance of a voice actor matter for their voice acting?
1
PerryNeeum Apr 16, 2026
Why does any of it matter? People go crazy over color of fictional characters. James Bond couldn’t be black. Little Mermaid got dunked on for being black. Superman can be British as long as he is white though. Now you got a studio that has a show set in an Asian environment that wants to have Asians do the voices and that is too much? I really don’t care if Bond/Ariel are black and Avatar is voiced by white/black/hispanic/asian people. Give me a good f****** story. That’s all that matters. Hell, there could be a fictional Lincoln movie done with a non white Lincoln lead and I’d be fine with it as long as the acting and storyline were solid. Biographical, I draw the line.
0
Creepy_Ad_1315 Apr 16, 2026 +2
I mean, I guess I would argue that there's a difference between changing integral parts of an already existing character and hiring an actor to do just the audio, where their appearance wouldn't matter. Superman (Clark Kent) for instance shouldn't be black or British. His entire identity comes from being raised in a rural white American setting and has been since the first comic was released in the 38. Changing that fundamentally alters everything else about the character and the story. DC made a stupid decision though since there are other black versions of superman they could have used to actually make an original movie. So I'd say that those were fundamentally different.
