The Last Man on Earth

Posted by davegammelgard

I watched part of season one when it was new, but couldn't really get into it. I got bored recently and started watching it, and I'm now in season three. The premise is great, the execution is mostly good, but the one thing that ruins it is Will Forte. He is so one note, and unable to play anything except insincere goof, that it ruins the show. It's amazing how it predicted exactly how the world would react to a deadly global pandemic. The characters are mostly well defined and complex. I just wish the lead was anyone except Will Forte. How do you feel about this show?

Funny, Will Forte was the best part of the show for me.

And his character has such great growth. The early episodes lean heavily on the routine of Phil trying some selfish scheme and having it blow up in his face, but he matures, actually falls in love with his wife, and becomes the glue holding the whole group together while still being the same goofy idiot.

That's wild that you would watch three seasons of a show in which you find the main actor so annoying that it supposedly ruins the whole show for you.

Nah, I watched most of How I Met Your Mother despite my strong aversion to Ted Mosby. I wish he'd died at the end.

I watched all of New Girl and Zooey Deschanel is the worst. All the guys are great though, and CeCe.

Everything else about the show is so good.

Kristen Schaal is a damn national treasure. Edit: The guy posting below me was referencing a classic (but obscure) skit with Kristen Schaal and Kurt Braunohler. It was very experimental/alt comedy. The poster is just quoting the closing line of the bit. No need to downvote. He wasn’t saying anything mean or insulting about Kristen.

Now that is a reference I haven‘t heard in a while. That second part of her standup show was some crazy avant garde, Kaufman level craziness.

I'm glad someone got the reference. Clearly most didn't. She's a comedy legend.

Loved Will. He's supposed to be kind of horrible. That's his character.

Each season got so much better. I was sad it didn't renewed but the creator came out with how things would have gone.

For sure. We as viewers sure could have used some closure.

It deserved a finale.

You should watch him in “The Four Seasons” on Netflix. It’s billed as comedy but it’s definitely not laugh-out-loud. It’s dark and I would not describe him as a goof at all. There’s a second season dropping in May, I think.

I think you're kind of missing the point of his character though. Tandy is supposed to be an insufferable, desperate loser because that makes the stakes of him being "the last man" actually funny. If he was a normal, likable guy it wouldnt work nearly as well. Will Forte plays that specific brand of cringe better than anyone else. Its honestly one of the biggest bummers in tv history that it got cancelled on such a massive cliffhanger.

I watched most of the show but it mostly slid outta my Teflon brain. But I feel certain that I enjoyed Forte in this. I have a deep abiding love for Will Forte. I think every time I watch him in something I gush.. like : *awww this guy 😊 Dude is egregiously underrated*

Remember when he sat in gum? Also, he crushed it in the SNL 50 year Les Mis NY skit.

I know what you mean. He can get annoying real quick, but not enough to make me stop watching the show. I enjoyed him in Summer Nights that just came out where he isn’t a goof, to use another commenter’s word. (I’ll have to check out four seasons)
