Remind me in two years

OrwellWhatever Mar 20, 2026 +168
For real. It blows my mind that they're still doing preproduction on the series almost a year after the previous season for a story that was largely already written before it started The only thing worse than this that I can recall is Fast and Furious not locking up anyone's contracts before filming the first half of a two part movie that ends on a literal cliffhanger
168
Funmachine Mar 20, 2026 +38
Casting isn't announced as it happens.
38
monsieurxander Mar 20, 2026 +29
It's not in preproduction. They're filming. The casting calls went out last year. These actors have been rumored for at least a month.
29
Accomplished-City484 Mar 20, 2026 +7
Oh nice, do you know when they started filming?
7
monsieurxander Mar 20, 2026 +3

Meanteenbirder Mar 21, 2026 +1
March 2nd is the rumored date. As to what is unknown, but they are still releasing casting calls, so I’m guessing most larger scenes and sets are still in develipment
1
Rhain1999 Mar 21, 2026 +1
Not just rumoured; production officially started on March 2.

Modern television making is unsustainable. 1-2 year gaps between seasons might have worked for Stranger Things but it doesn't really work for every other show.
31
a_trashcan Mar 20, 2026 +49
I'd seriously argue that it did not work for Stanger Things too
49
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +3
it didn't work cause season 5 was half assed
3
CaptainTripps82 Mar 20, 2026 +1
More so that you have people in their early 20s and 30s trying to play teenagers, which is a thing we largely stopped doing in the 90s
1
Mediocre_Nova Mar 21, 2026 +1
The writing was a much bigger issue than the actors looking old
1
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +6
with the WB-Paramount merger, it's gonna get worse less shows, less quality
6
Immediate_Amoeba5923 Mar 20, 2026 +1
I just wait till the next or last season of a show is about to come out or end and then start binging the show. I think Last of Us 2 is the best story in video game history and still have not seen season 2 yet. I know how important that story is to be told in one continuous go so I am waiting. Same goes for House of the Dragon. It is was a huge mistake to do the Last of Us 2 story seasons so far apart a lot more so than normal shows.

HeartInTheSun9 Mar 21, 2026 +1
The first prestige HBO show was Philip Marlowe, Private Eye with a 5 episode first season in 1983 and a 6 episode second season in 1986. Prestige shows usually have at least two years between seasons and they don’t have many episodes. Network tv like The Simpsons or Abbott Elementary consistently have 20 episode seasons yearly though. That’s never changed.
1
TruckerHatsAreCool Mar 21, 2026 +1
I know we have a species have collectively forgotten about GoT, but we gotta give that show props for putting out seasons on a yearly basis
1
BlastMyLoad Mar 20, 2026 +4
The series is filming right now. Casting announcements often come really late for whatever reason. Sometimes they don’t come out till post production
4
spellinbee Mar 21, 2026 +1
Yeah, it really surprised me when the first Pic of Kratos in God of War released so quickly after they announced who was playing him.
1
Zalvren Mar 21, 2026 +1
Sometimes they come as the marketring is starting even, like you get some casting announcement and the trailer drops that same week There doesn't seem to be any rule as to when they are made for some reason
1
HearTheEkko Mar 20, 2026 +1
I’m genuinely dying to see how they’re gonna explain why “Little” B is now suddenly a 15 year old teenager. I know they’ll probably gonna recast *again* but it would’ve been hilarious if they stuck with the same actor and just never aknowledged it.
1
Meanteenbirder Mar 21, 2026 +1
For what it’s worth, it’s literally the end of pre production or the beginning of filming. Everything signaled sometime this month is when it would begin, though I’m guessing it will intensify as the conditions become more optimal with spring//summer.
1
Person5_ Mar 20, 2026 +1
That still pisses me off. Don't end a movie in the middle of an action scene, then take years to maybe make the second part. My wife and i decided to watch all the ff movies a couple years ago and that was the worst way to end that marathon.
1
Derpderpderpderpde Mar 20, 2026 +70
Good luck guys.

Nick Offerman isn't gay, and he played a gay man in one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen. (First season)
123
artesianfijiwater Mar 20, 2026 +22
Yes. It's called. He's a pretty good actor!
22
HendrixChord12 Mar 20, 2026 +11
Acting? What strange sorcery is this?
11
mdavinci Mar 20, 2026 -44
It’s not about that. Trans actors have a tough time landing roles at all, especially cis roles. So now even trans roles are not available for trans actors anymore? It just makes it so incredibly hard for trans people to make it in the acting business and to me that’s really demotivating
-44
TheHawk17 Mar 20, 2026 +16
Trans people make up such a small percentage of the population that it also means there's less likelihood to be able to find strong Trans actors.
16
DodgerBaron Mar 20, 2026 +23
Ok but where the hell are you going to find a trans kid whos also a good actor. They aren't exactly that common
23
WickerShoesJoe Mar 20, 2026 -9
They did it for the game. I don't know, it just feels weird. I think it's fair to criticize this decision, while understanding that the trans community in acting is a very small pool, even smaller for considering it's an asian person. But still, the game devs found Ian Alexander, so it's not impossible. Hell, they're so fond of people reprising their roles, they could have had Ian come back, he still looks young, maybe compromise by having Lev be older. Everybody uses the same argument for a straight actor playing a gay role, but I think this is a very different thing for the trans community. Organizations have spoken multiple times against cis-people taking these roles, with the biggest compromise being that instead of a man playing a trans woman, it's more respectful to have a cis-woman playing a trans-woman. I honestly feel that the people involved should have done better.
-9
Varekai79 Mar 20, 2026 +9
Ian Alexander was absolutely atrocious on Star Trek: Discovery. Looks like they lost whatever acting ability they had when they were younger.
9
DodgerBaron Mar 20, 2026 -2
The actress for the game was 19 during filming...
-2
VirgoxValentine Mar 20, 2026 -7
That's the casting director's job. You hold auditions and coordinate with scouts and advertizers. That's literally their job.
-7
Grill_Enthusiast Mar 20, 2026 +10
...and what happens if you don't find the perfect person? Despite them getting Ian Alexander for the game, I really doubt transgender Asian boys in the 12-14 age range with incredible acting talent are easy to find. Even if that person exists, what if they don't audition? It's very easy to say "just find them, that's your job" from the sidelines when it isn't *your* job.
10
DodgerBaron Mar 20, 2026 +7
Ian Alexander was also an adult when filming it's extremely difficult to find a 13 year old trans kid lol
7
Grill_Enthusiast Mar 20, 2026 +2
I don't think they were an adult actually. They're 24, and the trailer for Part II with Yara and Lev came out in 2017. Regardless, you're right about the rest. It's a genuine miracle Naughty Dog found a perfect actor like Ian for the role, and I'm not surprised the show couldn't replicate it. I understand the disappointment about not getting a trans actor, but the people who act like this casting job should've been easy are being willfully ignorant.
2
MVRKHNTR Mar 21, 2026
I'm not convinced that the show couldn't do it too. They just didn't try.
0
bloodyturtle Mar 20, 2026 +1
>I really doubt transgender Asian boys in the 12-14 age range with incredible acting talent are easy to find Especially in this political climate where states are making it effectively illegal to have a transgender child
1
NoExcuse4OceanRudnes Mar 21, 2026 +1
Are they even shooting in the states?
1
Grill_Enthusiast Mar 20, 2026
Definitely doesn't help.
0
SReplicant Mar 21, 2026 +3
Yeah. I propose that all trans character roles be only available to real trans actors. But also all cis roles are only available to cis actors. It's only fair. And if this works, we can even take it a step further. All gay roles should be for real gay actors only and straight roles for real straight actors only. And if that works, we can keep taking it further. All doctor roles should be for real doctors, all hero roles for real heros, all alien roles for real aliens, and so on. I mean you know how hard is it for aliens to make it in the acting business? You know what? Why don't we just get rid of acting altogether? We just keep documentaries, where every role is a real person, not some fake person trying to fool everyone. There, problem solved!
3
Shell_fly Mar 21, 2026 +1
They cast a woman, playing a woman that begins to identify as more masculine in the early stages of life. Complete non issue. Next Are we going to say that no gay actor can play a straight character? No straight character can play a gay character? Let the actors ACT. It’s their job to step into shoes that aren’t their own.
1
Jaraghan Mar 20, 2026 -7
yeah. ultimately i dont mind the casting, but it would have been nice to cast an actual trans actor for a trans role
-7
GoldenTriforceLink Mar 20, 2026 +44
God bless them. The discourse is gonna make season 2 look like a cake walk. Edit: and apparently it’s coming from all sides.
44
JulietteKatze Mar 21, 2026 +4
Faithful to game then
4
Firefox72 Mar 20, 2026 +133
Probably would be a tough casting but i have a feeling not casting an actual trans person for the role of lev is not gonna go down well. After how S2 went i have very little hope for S3.
133
Difficult-Set-3151 Mar 20, 2026 +137
An actual trans 13 year old? Even if they managed to find someone, they'd be feeding them to the wolves.
137
Zalvren Mar 21, 2026 +1
I mean playing a trans character is already feeding anyone to the wolves. This is not a good role to get sadly for the actress.
1
DiligentTradition734 Mar 20, 2026 +150
I guess its just more so...how many trans 12/13yr old Asians are there who also act? You know. They couldn't even get a 12/13yr old asian and had to go with 15 even though she's younger. Hell, Yara is the one who's actually 16 and they hired an almost 30yr old.
150
wemustburncarthage Mar 21, 2026 +3
It’s unfortunate but the reality is there are barely enough actors to play this role let alone trans actors, and definitely not enough trans actors this age. The biggest gate in the business is talent, and everything else pretty much follows after that - including cultural representation. It’s highly imperfect but I would be absolutely enraged if they’d done something like write Lev out or diminish his role. If he’s played well and the story honours Ian Alexander’s performance, it will really have to do. He was 19 when he voiced Lev, so even there, it’s a limitation that the medium accommodates. I can understand being frustrated, though.
3
Zalvren Mar 21, 2026 +1
10-13 years old actors don't really **exist**, you have to find them and it's often their first role. See what they did for Harry Potter (movie and upcoming TV show) or Adolescence The Asian and trans criteria is of course complicating things here. Although, I'd argue the asian part could be changed as it's not essential to their characters (and it's not like it's the first time Hollywood change a character race). The trans part is however much more important.
1
manloverreal Mar 21, 2026
bella ramsay was 18 playing a 14 year old (the same age lev is in part 2) during season one. I don’t think it would have been that hard to do some open casting calls (or street scouting) for younger looking 18-20 year olds who identify as nonbinary or transgender - and based on the leaked casting sheet that’s been circulating, they didn’t even attempt that and openly asked for women
0
DiligentTradition734 Mar 21, 2026 +2
And Bella looked it. Ian Alexander doesn't look 13. And it wouldn't make sense for a 13yr old ftm trans kid to sound like they're on T...especially during an apocalypse. Lev lives in an apocalypse with a very strict religious group. 18-20 would've still been too old because Lev is supposed to be a prepubescent child younger than Ellie would've been. You're also just expecting anyone who gets the role to have to be open about the fact that they're trans like thats not an oppressive thing to expect of someone who is part of a minority group. Expecting someone to have to disclose that about themselves or they don't get the job is wrong. Especially when the role is for a kid.
2
MVRKHNTR Mar 21, 2026 +2
>18-20 would've still been too old because Lev is supposed to be a prepubescent child younger than Ellie would've been I think it's also *very* important that he's so young. Aging him up does a disservice to the plot.
2
Old_Protection_3883 Mar 20, 2026 +4
the argument would be that lev doesn’t have the resources to transition medically. not sure I buy it but that’s the obvious line
4
WAAAAAAAAARGH Mar 20, 2026 +23
The obvious line is that putting an actual high school freshman aged trans actor in a show whose cast already gets a shit ton of vitriol from chuds is a terrible terrible idea
23
Old_Protection_3883 Mar 20, 2026 +1
you can’t say that in press junkets though
1
fleshbunny Mar 20, 2026 +1
I don’t like many of the changes they made in season 2 but, while not excited for season 3, it’s at least gonna be the actually *interesting* part of TLoU2. Abby’s levels were insane. The hotel descent is one of my personal all-timers
1
Kazewatch Mar 20, 2026 +5
It really is insane that people will without a doubt still b**** about something like this. Even though that's hard casting to make but also actors....acting....in role that's not usually who they are? What a crazy concept.
5
DiamondBurInTheRough Mar 20, 2026 +2
Edit: I was mistaken, misinterpreted a sentence in the article
2
Firefox72 Mar 20, 2026 +24
She's absolutely not. The charachter in the show(Lev) will be trans just like in the game. Thats what that sentence is saying.
24
DiamondBurInTheRough Mar 20, 2026 +6
Oh shit, you’re right, I completely misinterpreted that sentence. My mistake!
6
TwinkleTowez Mar 20, 2026 +5
To be fair the sentence in the article is poorly written

3
dingleberry314 Mar 20, 2026 +1
That would require reading lol
1

Okay but they're in the apocalypse and part of a cult so they do not have access to any hormones / medications, let alone surgery?

PickaxeJunky Mar 20, 2026
I loved S1 but didn't watch S2.  I thought there was a huge drop off in quality of the writing in the 2nd game and all signs pointed to a fairly faithful 2nd season of the TV show, so I thought I'd give it a miss.
0
Vandergrif Mar 20, 2026 +12
> and all signs pointed to a fairly faithful 2nd season of the TV show Ironically it isn't, in some monumentally bizarre ways. Ellie's entire characterization is all over the place in the show for the second season for example, and very much for the worse. Instead of a compelling doom-spiral of grief, anger, and vengeance it's a CW tier buddy duo road trip for a good portion interspersed with some tonally jarring violent bits that lack most of the weight they had in the game. It's like they were too afraid of trusting the audience and making Ellie seem unlikable and so most of her actions seem unintentional because of it, like she's an afterthought in a season that largely revolves around her. Dina ended up being the more compelling character because they made her seem much more competent and fleshed-out comparatively. The second game had some contentious and divisive choices that were made for its writing (personally I liked it overall), but oddly they decided take some of the things that worked best in the game and diminish them for the show.
12
Ricobe Mar 20, 2026 +8
I personally thought the second game was stronger. Had to get used to the derail and shift for a bit, but the story is more complex and highlights how what can be seen as good from one angle, can be seen as bad from another.
8
PickaxeJunky Mar 20, 2026 +4
I really liked that relationship between Joel and Ellie.  I didn't feel like anything came close to it in the 2nd game.  I also didn't like how a few of the side characters were clearly specifically written for specific plot points.  In the 1st game, the minor characters were really well fleshed out and never felt like they were there for a plot purpose.
4
8enevolent Mar 21, 2026 +2
You're correct. The heart of the story was Joel and Ellie's surrogate father-daughter relationship. To take that away early on in what could almost be described as a legacy sequel was an instant fail, for all of the redeeming qualities the game has.
2
Raidoton Mar 20, 2026 +3
You forgot to mention that you are mad because they killed of Joel early on.
3
PickaxeJunky Mar 21, 2026 +1
I'll happily admit I was mad.  It was a big risk doing that, and if you are going to do that in a story, you have to make it worth while and you have to make sure you have something good to replace it with.
1
Ricobe Mar 21, 2026 +1
I definitely liked their relationship as well and i think it was a brave move story wise, because of how people get attached. What Joel did was clearly wrong, but because we are attached to him and Ellie we ignored it I think Abby's story became very good. I liked how principled she was. Her revenge was understandable from her angle and if we had played her angle from the start, people would be happy with what happened to Joel. And she didn't just lash out at everyone, but focused on her revenge I personally think the second game became better because of this. It was more complex and nuanced and showed both sides had valid points and had done bad stuff. And it highlights how actions have consequences
1
NoExcuse4OceanRudnes Mar 21, 2026 +1
> I also didn't like how a few of the side characters were clearly specifically written for specific plot points. All characters are written for specific reasons. Which characters are you talking about?
1
PickaxeJunky Mar 21, 2026 +1
Jesse is one example.  Once the writers had run out of use for him, he gets shot in the face and then completely forgotten about. Ellie and Dina just don't seem to care at all that he died.  Yara and Lev as well, they're written in as obvious counter points to Joel and Ellie. I found it a bit contrived that they'd introduce another surrogate parent-child relationship. I didnt think their characters were really explored that much. The writers could've gotten away with it if Yara and Lev were really well fleshed out characters, but they weren't.
1
Ricobe Mar 21, 2026 +1
Yara and Lev weren't parent-child, but siblings fleeing from a religious fanatic group. Their story was centered around how the cult was and how women were treated in the cult I don't think they were a counter point to Joel and Ellie, but more about religious extremism
1
Drakengard Mar 20, 2026 +2
> In the 1st game, the minor characters were really well fleshed out and never felt like they were there for a plot purpose. That's a huge stretch. You're suggesting that Tess wasn't written to be killed off? Or that Tommy wasn't included conveniently to give Joel someone to talk to who knew the old him and Sarah? And I could go on and on. Every side character was there for plot purposes. You're kidding yourself if you think otherwise. I have plenty of issues with the second game, specifically with how the plot goes for Abby and Lev that to me just doesn't really work (though their section of the game is incredibly satisfying to play through), but the second game is still easily one of the best games I've ever played.
2
PickaxeJunky Mar 21, 2026 +1
Fir me, the characters in the first game felt much more real.  Sure, Tess was written to get killed off. But her relationship with Joel was really well written and felt meaningful.  There's a character in the 2nd game, (i cant remember his name) who fills a similar role. Once his character serves his purpose to the plot, he gets shot in the face and Ellie and the other girl never even mention him again. Its like they've completely forgotten about him.
1
Vandergrif Mar 20, 2026 +1
Although on the other hand it's like what, less than 1% of the population is trans? And the vast majority of them are presumably coming to a more definitive conclusion about that at an age later than around 12-16 (the age range you'd need to be casting in for the role), and presumably relatively few are actors, and among the few who *are* actors there are even fewer that are going to be of adequate quality to get cast in a higher production value HBO series, and even fewer actors at that age range are even decent to start with, *and* they need to be asian *and* speak english in a north american accent to fit the role, *and* they have to be available and not otherwise contracted to something else for the specific time period they're shooting in. That's a big ask. It would be like trying to find a unicorn.
1
stonewallace17 Mar 20, 2026 +29
Kyriana was great in Skeleton Crew. And with how small I imagine the pool of early teen FTM trans actors is I think we can just ignore that issue, it's not like the character is changing at all.
29
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 -38
the casting of a cis actor as a trans character in a trans-inclusive story, especially when the original game went out of its way to cast a trans actor in Ian Alexander, is a real f****** shame.
-38
TheEndingWasFine Mar 20, 2026 +20
The character is in their early teens, I’m not really sure there was a wide pool of early teen Asian trans actors to cast from and then they have to be good enough at the actual job.

14

It was very close to the game. I do think some of the additions were weaker.
-1
sgtsandwich Mar 20, 2026 +6
It’s crazy how different the real world views part 2 compared to Reddit.
6
KasumiGotoTriss Mar 21, 2026 +1
Do they? Considering they lost like 80% of the viewership after the episode when Joel died, it sounds like the story didn't resonate with the general audience either.
1
SweatyButtcheek Mar 20, 2026 +4
Season one was so good, idk how they flubbed S2.
4
RooMan7223 Mar 20, 2026 +3
Let’s not forget what “acting” actually is. It’s all dress up and pretending to be something you’re not. Boxing actors jn just because of their gender or sexual preference is stupid
3
monsieurxander Mar 20, 2026 +6
Plus the show has already cast non-binary and trans actors to play cis roles, as well as queer actors to play straight roles.
6
RooMan7223 Mar 20, 2026 +2
Exactly. The idea that only trans actors can play trans characters implies they cannot play non-trans characters which is bullshit.
2
Rosebunse Mar 21, 2026 +1
I mean, there's a good reason people get offended. It's essentially taking jobs away from a prosecuted minority. That being said, in this case, I think it gets tricky. Levi is a trans boy, but we are talking about a world where things like gender reassignment surgery and medication are non-existent. Also, I just hope this story is left in and not heavily censored.
1
HerculeTheChamp Mar 20, 2026 +1
I wonder what is left of this shows audience after the abysmal season 2
1
willdearborn- Mar 20, 2026 +20
The overall season viewership in the end was higher than season one’s.
20
Imaginary-Plate2987 Mar 20, 2026 +18
It wasn’t abysmal, wtf. What a ridiculous exaggeration.
18
Dustmopper Mar 20, 2026 +7
I thought it was pretty faithful to the game. It’s just that the second game has a plot that’s gruelingly miserable and nothing good happens to anyone. I enjoyed the second season, and the second game but if people were expecting a fun, happy story that was never going to happen.
7
Worldly_Reference434 Mar 20, 2026 +11
Most people I’ve seen were unhappy for the opposite reason, that they didn’t go dark enough with Ellie’s character.  As much as people hated Abby in the game, I’m wondering if a season focusing on her will actually draw fans back in, just given how good the actress is - and that she’s definitely not afraid to play up the anger and violence.
11
Vandergrif Mar 20, 2026 +4
> that they didn’t go dark enough with Ellie’s character Yup. Half the things she does in the show are made out as if it's an accident, it completely whitewashes the character and takes all the impact and weight out of her actions.
4
Ricobe Mar 20, 2026 +7
Abby was hated before the game was even released, because of certain toxic parts of the internet. I've seen some that were unsure whether to play it because of that, but when they finally did, they loved it She's a controversial character at first, but once you go through her angle, it creates more sympathy towards her
7
Worldly_Reference434 Mar 20, 2026 +3
Oh, no disagreement here! I’m a huge fan and definitely see her side of things. The pre-release controversy about her appearance drove me crazy at the time, because I was on a female contact sports team and women very much can get that muscular. Anyway, I think the game is best enjoyed when you sympathize with both her and Ellie.
3
Kazewatch Mar 20, 2026 +7
I mean story beat wise sure? But Ellie is a complete dumbass and not in the way that's compelling. She makes baffling choices and Dina basically does all the work while she makes increasingly dumber choices.
7
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 -3
ellie was smart enough to save dina from the subway. she was smart enough to figure out joel's lies. she was smart enough to distract the seraphites so jesse can take dina out of the forest

> It’s just that the second game has a plot that’s gruelingly miserable and nothing good happens to anyone. I wish the discourse surrounding the show and game focused more on this and not on how they were "making things political" or other asinine shit. Because this was genuinely my biggest problem with the game. Felt like they just sat in the writers room and were like "what's the edgiest thing possible we could do to make people know that this game is very mature and very adult?" and it was just miserable. Like that's fun, killing pregnant women! Killing dogs and then getting a flashback about how loved the dog was! Bashing a brick into a pregnant woman's face! Literally any other game would not get a pass for that shit.

I like dark grim shit, but I was expecting some sense of season conclusion. It was all set up and then you have to wait four years or whatever for the payoff. It's annoying when they do that. Here are all these new mysterious cool characters, you can tell they're going to be great, in half a decade. This season? Don't be silly, they're barely going to show up.

Dustmopper Mar 20, 2026 +6
And that it will probably air in 2028

Wdvynx Mar 20, 2026 -2
Who is this season for? Season 2 was so bad in almost every department that I was done with it after the last episode, what could have been an amazing season was squandered for Craig's obsession with parent/child relationship writing (He actually likens Dina and Ellie's relationship to a parent and a child at one point in the podcast).

bloodyturtle Mar 20, 2026 +6
I’m gonna guess all the people who aren’t done with it
6
ceaguila84 Mar 21, 2026 +2
what an usual stupid question from Reddit Who's this season for? Who asked for this? etc
2
Dynamic_Samurai Mar 20, 2026 +3
It's for the many millions of people that are going to watch it

fisstech15 Mar 20, 2026
I really loved it. I haven’t played the second game fwiw
0
blindsdog Mar 20, 2026 +6
Haven’t played either game and I thought it was some of the worst television I’ve seen. And I loved the first season.
6
Wdvynx Mar 20, 2026 +7
You absolutely need to play the second game.
7
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +1
we have jobs and other responsibilities, can't just find time to play a video game a tv show makes the games accessible
1
bloodyturtle Mar 20, 2026
The game is probably shorter than the show
0
raaam-ranch Mar 20, 2026 +9
Game is so so so so so so so so much better. It was kind of insulting how bad that season was in comparison. You are better off watching a “movie cut” of it if you don’t intend on playing it.
9
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026
i played the games, and season 2 wasn't that bad
0
crumble-bee Mar 20, 2026 +3
Just watch the 8 hour movie on YouTube. You’ll understand why we were upset.
3
MinuteLongFart Mar 20, 2026 +1
The second game is my second favorite video game of all time. Season two of the show jettisoned most of what I loved about it.
1
Turbulent-Let-1180 Mar 20, 2026 -1
Same i thought it was fantastic, haven't played the games. I think the people who played the games forget that there's a significant part of the viewership that never played. Asking who this season is for is crazy lol. There was a 30% drop from the premier to the finale, which was the gamer viewership, and the episodes still were averaging 37 million global views per episode
-1
SP0oONY Mar 20, 2026 +2
Honestly, I thought that Season 1 was poor outside of the Pilot and Episode 3. Even if you don't play the game, watching one of the cutscene movies of the game on youtube is so much better than the series.
2
supercoolpartydude Mar 20, 2026 +1
Sadly already know the inevitable review bombing season 3 will get. Abby’s mere existence is extremely divisive with the fanbase. An entire season dedicated to her background and storyline will not go well. Doesn’t matter the casting, writing, direction, etc. It is truly an impossible task to make it beloved.
1
WAAAAAAAAARGH Mar 20, 2026 +9
They fucked the pacing/tone of the game up so bad. They revealed Abby’s motivations in the very first episode, they did the porch scene which is the final scene in the game) in ep 4, they changed the timeline with Ellie finding out about what Joel did in the hospital, they neutered Ellie’s rampage down to almost nothing. Now they’re saying the second game is going to be 3 seasons instead of 2. Druckmann left, I just don’t know any way this could possibly work. The game gets a lot of shit online but I actually love it, it did something really creative and took significant narrative risks.
9
crumble-bee Mar 20, 2026 +3
Those things absolutely matter and it’s why s2 was bad - they Mazin adapted it badly and changed the characters. It was terrible.
3
TheSwordItself Mar 20, 2026 +21
Oh yeah review bombed. Maybe it's just bad.
21
Hoxtilicious Mar 20, 2026 +13
I remember making a comment during S2 saying it was hard to believe how pretty Dina was and how her hair looked almost too good for an apocalypse. I got like 4 DMs from randos calling me a piece of shit, sexist, homophobic, etc.. Not only are you not allowed to criticize the show- you can’t even make a general observation about the on set hairstylist lol
13
Carninator Mar 20, 2026 +6
There's a reason why the episodes where Ellie and Dina have intimate moments are the lowest rated. I found season 2 to be lacking, but it's not hard to tell when something is receiving low ratings for actually being bad compared to homophobia. With this show it's the latter.
6
_Army9308 Mar 20, 2026 +2
The only episode that was well rated after the certain death was the Joel ome
2
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +1
lot of the episodes have been review bombed
1
_Army9308 Mar 20, 2026 +2
Nah people didnt like them
2
TheSwordItself Mar 20, 2026 +2
Lol even the "intimate moments" were bad. Bella Ramsey is not a convincing lesbian.
2
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +2
bella ramsey had more chemistry with storm reid than Isabela Merced
2
ItsADeparture Mar 20, 2026
Well, Bella is bisexual in real life. Not really sure how one can be a "convincing" lesbian or not either way. The issue that people had was they just made her look like a complete dumbass in some of the intimate scenes. Show is fine, but I'm not going to act like "I'm gonna be a DAD!?" isn't one of the worst things that could possibly be uttered in that moment in a series with the tone of The Last of Us.
0
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 +6
Isabela Merced looks like a child. she's so tiny. And why she have her hair all blown out? she looked like she stepped out a salon
6
TheFoxInSocks Mar 20, 2026
So you think season 1 episode 3 was one of the weakest of the series? It couldn’t possibly have been review bombed?
0
AromaticUnion3709 Mar 20, 2026 +7
Seeing how bad (subjectively) Bella was in Season 2 compared to the first season, and how people reacted to her in general I’m pretty sure most are siding *with* Abby now. So I don’t think S3 will get the same review bombing you think it will.
7
ItsADeparture Mar 20, 2026 +6
> Seeing how bad (subjectively) Bella was in Season 2 compared to the first season, and how people reacted to her in general I’m pretty sure most are siding with Abby now. To be fair, most of the people who played the game and didn't get caught in the weird rage around it probably come to the same conclusion because Abby is a much better character than Ellie.
6
Extension-Field3653 Mar 21, 2026 +1
Bella was a beast as Lyanna Mormont in GoT but I felt her casting as Ellie is just fine, not great but fine. But I can’t ignore that Kaitlyn might be a better casting for Ellie. The look and the voice and the physique about the same. Adult Ellie she really look the part. Superb casting on Joel though. Love Pedro in this series.
1
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026 -1
Kaitlyn Dever is such a shitty actor. She didn't even bother to buff up for the role of abby how did this 4'11 shrimp beat up joel? she looked pathetic
-1
natedoggcata Mar 20, 2026 +4
The funniest part of Season 2 to me is in the game Joel tells Abby "Just go ahead and say whatever pre rehearsed speech you got and get it over with" then they beat the shit out of Joel. In the TV show Abby does exactly that and just exposition dumps the hell out of Joel and completely ruins the scene. It was ridiculous.
4
NoExcuse4OceanRudnes Mar 21, 2026 +1
They shoot him in the leg
1
grimmjow29200 Mar 20, 2026 +4
The show is made to make Abby likeable and Ellie stupid, something missed in the game. No worry for her.
4
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026
Kaitlyn Dever looked pathetic. she didn't even bother to buff up for the role. Not believable at all

ItsADeparture Mar 20, 2026 +1
> Abby’s mere existence is extremely divisive with the fanbase. Which is insane, because Abby is by far the stronger character in terms of arc in the game. It made me wish that they would have just gotten rid of the Ellie sections completely and made the entire game about Abby's quest to find Joel and Ellie (while somehow keeping it a secret from the player) only to rug pull at the end and have the final or one of the final levels be the big controversial scene from the game's first hour.
1
Difficult-Set-3151 Mar 20, 2026 -8
Abby won't be as controversial in the show. They got a great actress. The games character looked like Brock Lesner which caused a lot of the controversy.
-8
Ghetto_Phenom Mar 20, 2026 +1
Abby was based on Colleen Fotsch just btw.. look her up. I see people ragging on Dever for not bulking up but it is just not realistic at all for her to get even close to that physique.
1
Conscious-Quarter423 Mar 20, 2026
angelina jolie buffed up for tomb raider. doesn't mean she couldn't try
0
Ghetto_Phenom Mar 20, 2026 +2
Dever did try. She was in the gym for like 8 months. Women don’t build muscle like men or as fast. Could she have been bigger? Absolutely but would’ve required gear imo to do something that fast. Jolie did get some muscle but be honest man it was nothing compared to an Abby physique.
2
Kazewatch Mar 20, 2026 -4
Also forcing you to play as the person who just killed Joel for 20 hours is just a terrible idea no matter who it was.
-4
Treelokc Mar 20, 2026 +4
Making you wait 3 years to watch a season of TV based around a character you don't like who killed a character you love is also not going to go well.
4
Ricobe Mar 20, 2026 +3
I disagree. I think that's exactly the point. Getting exposed to a different angle and understanding the full picture. You quickly learn that Abby isn't a bad person
3
Johnny0230 Mar 20, 2026 -5
It is normal that a complex and articulated story does not please everyone, as happened with the video game, but it is equally true that that complexity cannot be adapted well into 9 episodes.
-5
MaeSolug Mar 20, 2026 +1
This is the second sub where this has been posted and the comments are quite complex, it really looks like a lose/lose situation for everyone involved Hopefully not for the actress, nobody wants another "Kelly Marie Tran deleting her social media" happening again
1
yoycatt Mar 21, 2026 +1
The only thing that could have saved the disappointment of season 2 would have been a reveal that season 3 was coming a lot sooner than expected. Which given what we know of the story and how’s it’s structured would have made a ton of sense. Instead here we are still casting characters. I know a lot of people hate part two, but as someone who loved it: they have fucked this.

Whether or not the actor is trans is something you can also fact-check for yourself with a Google search.

Tiny-Setting-8036 Mar 20, 2026 +7
Serious question…. Why wouldn’t they? The story isn’t over and it’s still objectively a hit show by most metrics. HBO doesn’t get scared of nerd backlash.

I'd normally agree, but I'm not sure how many trans Asian child actors there are out there
6
manloverreal Mar 21, 2026 +1
bella ramsay was 19 playing a 14 year old - the same age lev is in part 2. I don’t know why everyone is fixated on age accuracy in these comments given that nearly every other actor in this show is 4-5 years older than the character they play? The casting call sheet got leaked and they didn’t even bother attempting to hire a trans actor. They put no effort into the decision and took the easy way out. Its a shame.
1
sinkwiththeship Mar 20, 2026 +7
Probably hard to find an age appropriate ftm actor.
7
Donny_Z28 Mar 21, 2026 +1
Pretty wild take. The casting call released a few months ago for this role was specifically looking for an actor who is also an Asian FtM trans person under 15 years old. If they didn’t cast someone meeting that criteria after months of open casting, it means they didn’t get any applicants that met said criteria and had to go with the next best option. They tried, but obviously it didn’t pan out as originally planned.
1
manloverreal Mar 21, 2026 +1
this isn’t true. it simply asked for AFAB - assigned female at birth. there was no mention of a trans identity listed on the call sheet
1
Donny_Z28 Mar 21, 2026 +1
Ah I’ve misremembered then, my apologies
