The official listnook AMA app has been released on Android

Posted by kemitche

As [promised](https://www.listnook.com/r/blog/comments/2f9n76/announcing_the_official_listnook_ama_app/ck75nm0?context=1), I've been working hard on the Android version of listnook's official AMA app, and it has launched. Get it now from the [Play Store](https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.listnook.iama) or read Tuesday's [announcement](http://www.listnookblog.com/2014/09/announcing-official-listnook-ama-app_2.html) for more information. https://listnookama.listnook.com/ P.S. Yes, there's an [iPhone version](https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/id911630284) - we launched that on Tuesday.

While I'm here, I'll break down what we're using these permissions for: > * find accounts on the device > * add or remove accounts > * create accounts and set passwords > * use accounts on the device We create a "listnook" account on your phone/tablet via the Android AccountManager. > * receive data from Internet > * full network access > * view network connections listnook.com happens to be on the internet > * read sync settings > * toggle sync on and off This is to synchronize a small number of device settings and user karma. > * prevent device from sleeping This is for notifications. Upon getting an AMA "push", we briefly keep the device awake to create the notification.

> While I'm here, I'll break down what we're using these permissions for: > find accounts on the device > add or remove accounts > create accounts and set passwords > use accounts on the device > We create a "listnook" account on your phone/tablet via the Android AccountManager. Do you read or store the names of other accounts? This is a very important topic for me.
13
kemitche Sep 5, 2014 +5
No. We solely pull in the names of listnook accounts managed by this app.

[deleted] Sep 5, 2014 +10
> We create a "listnook" account on your phone/tablet via the Android AccountManager. does that mean i could implement login to my app via listnook instead of silly google and facebook? :> edit: found it :D for others: https://github.com/listnook/listnook/wiki/OAuth2

kemitche Sep 5, 2014 +6
Yes, though note that our OAuth2 implementation is a work in progress.

Can you fix the bug where it keeps taking you to the top of the front page? I was scrolling down to browse amas and it kept taking me back to top.

> listnook.com happens to be on the internet What?!

qdhcjv Sep 5, 2014 +80
TIL - to access listnook.com your device needs to be connected to the internet

beeraholikchik Sep 5, 2014 +47
This is ridiculous, haven't they come up with a better, safer solution yet?
47
all-base-r-us Sep 5, 2014 +28
Yes, I have. AMA.

Are they saying that listnook exists outside my toilet? D: Then why have I been listnooking in the John the whole time! Answer me that!!!!!
20

WHAT DOES JOHN HAVE TO DO WITH THIS?!

I just pay my monthly listnook bill.
21
Plague_Bot Sep 5, 2014 +27
Pro tip: your monthly listnook subscription comes with access to other sites as well. It's a nice feature to have but I doubt you'll use it often.

Troggie42 Sep 5, 2014 +20
Awesome response! Thanks for that! I figured most of them were along those lines. Many people get uppity about permissions (ahem Facebook messenger) but have no idea what they're actually for. Hopefully this will help people!
20
the_omega99 Sep 5, 2014 +4
Yeah, I wish more app developers would specifically state exactly why they need each permission.
4
neon_overload Sep 5, 2014 +8
That looks like an entirely appropriate set of permissions. **Thank you** for not demanding access to my contact list or my device ID and phone number. I've held back on recent updates to big name apps such as Twitter and Evernote because they seem to be over-reaching in terms of wanting my (and my friends') contact details. And I've completely uninstalled TuneIn Radio Pro because it now demands access to your contact list.

as an android lover and and iOS hater... sadly you are right. The permission managment in android is terrible. Not only can't you really controll what the app does but kinda every app wants ALL the permissions. So probably most of the people don't read them, since they have to give away everything anyway. Just for fun: Here is what the first search result for a flashlight app requires.... * retrieve running apps * modify or delete the contents of your USB storage * test access to protected storage * take pictures and videos * view Wi-Fi connections * read phone status and identity * receive data from Internet * control flashlight * change system display settings * modify system settings * prevent device from sleeping * view network connections * full network access ^^oh ^^and ^^xcode ^^is ^^over ^^the ^^top ^^awesome

Get cyanogenmod and use Privacy Guard.
7
Charwinger21 Sep 5, 2014 +2
Google is in the process of overhauling their permission management system. They've taken the 145+ cryptic permissions (which have been around for years), and shrunk it down to a list of 12 understandable categories, and are unveiling a system where you can turn off individual permissions for apps (Universal Data Controls/App Ops) later this month/next month with Android L.
2
prmaster23 Sep 5, 2014 +12
Isn't this the TOS of this generation? Even with all the NSA talk for the last couple years I am willing to bet that more than 95% of listnookors don't read those permissions when they install an app.
12
MannoSlimmins Sep 5, 2014 +104
I asked in the last thread and the admins never replied: Listnook.com itself is open source. Will you be open sourcing the android and ios apps

Great question. I wish I had a solid answer for you, however, at this time, we have not made a decision.

THANK YOU listnook, for creating an android application that runs smoothly on BlackBerry 10 right out of the box. We don't ask for much, and there are still millions of us! We will use it gladly!
2
kemitche Sep 5, 2014 +4
I... I didn't even test on BlackBerry 10. So I'm glad it works! I hope I don't break it later.
4
kayriss Sep 5, 2014 +1
You know how many android apps result in a blank white screen the second they're opened on a BB10 device? Plenty. I love BB10, but I recognize why people don't develop for it. To have a new app run seamlessly is a pretty remarkable start, though I don't have the know-how to tell you what you did right. BB10.3 will almost certainly result in further improvements. We are small, but we're committed. Thanks for a great new BB10 friendly app.

There's a major problem with the app, one which I'm sure they've realised and going to remedy soon: you can't see parent comments. So there are a lot of questions like: Q: "And what did you think of him?" A: "He's great!" And we have no way of knowing who they're talking about. We need to be able to see the parent comment.
1322
animagnam Sep 5, 2014 +21
Another problem I noticed when viewing the Jay Chandrasekhar and Sarah Chalke AMA was that it only showed Jay's answers, understandable as he was the thread starter, need to add something to recognise when they say they'll be joined by \/u/whoever so their answers are shown too. And yes being able to see parent comments would be awesome.
21
Null7g Sep 5, 2014 +157
I'm glad to see this comment gaining attention. Not being able to see the context of posts is my only gripe with the app.

EjaculationStorm Sep 5, 2014 +29
Just downloaded the app. It looks great and works pretty well so far only thing I can say is it goes back to the top of the list every time I back out of an ama, so I have to manually scroll don't and find my place. I know it's sort of a petty concern but I figured I'd give some constructive criticism.
29
Tshekovsky Sep 5, 2014 +8
I wouldn't class this as a petty concern, I'd say it's more of an annoyance. Thanks for bringing this up for us.
8
vash_the_stampede Sep 5, 2014 +2
Expanding on this: when I switch apps and then return to this app, it takes me to the top of the ama I'm reading. That was a little frustrating that responding to a text brought me back to the top of the ama.
2
diana_mt Sep 5, 2014 +1
Sorry for the (probably) uninteresting question, but might I ask what font is it that you used in the app? Thank you!

i_eatProstitutes Sep 4, 2014 +351
They stopped the Bad Luck Brian AMA ;_;
351
Captainpatch Sep 5, 2014 +87
The deleted Bad Luck Brian AMA broke two rules. Firstly the person doing the AMA even said that it wasn't a significant portion of his life, which is one of the qualifications for doing an AMA. Secondly he refused to provide proof when he was asked, this later became important when the real BLB did an AMA on /r/AdviceAnimals **and revealed that the deleted AMA was fake**. Seriously. Nobody even cared to follow up when Karmanaut was proven right.
87
Quof Sep 5, 2014 +63
The main problem was that Karmaut's rationale was that BLB was an internet celebrity, which doesn't qualify for an AMA; but then, Karmanaut himself did an AMA, and he is only an internet celebrity. This dissonance made a lot of people angry.

Probably bought it for himself. **DISCLAIMER** for those who weren't quite quick witted enough to grasp the joke, this is a joke. No, I do not truly believe he bought gold for himself... Three times.

What the f***? That was 2 years ago?
16
phamily_man Sep 5, 2014 +50
I know this is probably a joke but it was a good call by Karmanaut. There was no proof, which is an absolute necessity for AMA to be what it is; as we learned since that AMA ended up being fake. It's still awesome that he got the most downvoted comment in history. Edit: my mistake, Karmanaut actually removed the AMA for other reasons that users disagreed with. While the reason is an official rule of AMA, if the AMA had been real, he should have let it slide, as well as the OAG AMA.
50
Terrh Sep 5, 2014 +34
except his reasoning wasn't "no proof"
34
phamily_man Sep 5, 2014 +7
Whoops wasn't aware of that part. Thank you for clarifying. BLB and OAG should have both remained up. Even if they are internet celebrities, they were both highly popular with listnook and even if it's against the rules there's no reason to take down something that the users are enjoying.
7
pattsully Sep 4, 2014 +12
Didn't that end up being fake?
12
frizzlestick Sep 5, 2014 +12
I've noticed that it only shows the question and the answer to the question. It doesn't go deeper. /u/chooter (Victoria)'s ama today demonstrated that she went fairly deep into counter replies and comments, but with this app we can't see them. Is it a setting I'm missing? Otherwise, this thing is gorgeous. UI is beautiful.
12
LithePanther Sep 5, 2014 +2
There might be a setting, but the whole point was to clear out all the c*** questions that never got answered so you could see the actually OP comments.
2
frizzlestick Sep 5, 2014 +3
I think you misread my comment. Sometimes OPs post in the nested chains deep down. Want to see those too. Not just top comment and reply.

i_eatProstitutes Sep 4, 2014 +10

10
chooter Sep 4, 2014 +21
Probably soft tacos - they splinter less.
21
catern Sep 5, 2014 +7
As listnook.com is open source, I hope listnook will stick to its commitment to open source and release the source to this app.
7
dom_corleone Sep 5, 2014 +234
Why is there need for a seperate app for AMA??
234
[deleted] Sep 5, 2014 +161
I'll take a stab at this: AMAs are the most popular section of listnook and mobile is the place where they see the highest usage. Making an app tailored to AMAs allows them to capitalize on both of those strengths whereas a general listnook app might need more promotion to make a splash.
161
disco_biscuit Sep 5, 2014 +155
AMA is the sublistnook that differentiates this site from Digg, 4chan, 9gag, etc. Listnook is basically no different - users post content, and comment. Nothing special if you really think about it - formats come and go, what will make listnook last? Many would argue AMA can connect the common man (as represented by the user-base of this site) to anyone in politics, media, entertainment - anyone. It has immense value in the grass-roots connection it provides (and notably, a connection that works both ways). Thus, if you did a valuation of listnook and segmented it by each sublistnook's to the brand... AMA probably is at least half the site's value. So the app creates a specific user experience for the most valuable part of the site - the one part that could survive a competitor. Because while users might flock to the next great site (see; Digg to listnook or MySpace to Facebook)... AMA is the long-term hook that a competitor won't easily be able to replicate.

I couldn't disagree more. Listnook's voting system makes for awesome sub-communities as long as users are active in voting (viz., upvoting worthy content and downvoting spam and other detractors).

18
[deleted] Sep 5, 2014 +16
Because it's extremely popular and having a purpose-built AMA app will make it easier for people to answer/read questions while on-the-go.

When will we get an official listnook app?
437
StrangerJ Sep 4, 2014 +58
Apparently Listnook has been in the Red in terms of profits for a very long time. If they just released an app that cost 99 cents, or pay a dollar to remove adds, they would make so much money
58
Motha_Effin_Kitty_Yo Sep 5, 2014 +33
As much as I love listnook would people really spend money with so many excellent 3rd party apps available? Not only that, but they would have to hire people specifically to create and maintain the app which would cost a small fortune
33
akshay7394 Sep 5, 2014 +7
Well, a) they'd already started building an official app a while ago. b) Excellent 3rd party apps aren't a barrier, they're a challenge. If listnook can make a *good* app, why *wouldn't* one pay for that over a 3rd party app?
7
[deleted] Sep 5, 2014 +7
I use Listnook is Fun and love it. But I would buy an official listnook app. And if it sucked, I'd continue using RIF being happy that I helped support listnook.

My_name_isOzymandias Sep 5, 2014 +8
The Internet: Where everyone thinks they know how to run a profitable business. Also, just want to point out that the model you're suggesting (one time payment) would require them to add more and more customers in order to continue to be able to pay for their server costs (which would likely increase due to the influx of additional users).
8
Motha_Effin_Kitty_Yo Sep 4, 2014 +21
I believe that listnook admins have stated before that they closely support and work with apps such as Alien Blue, listnook is fun, etc but they have more on their plate right now to deal with.

There's also a ~~working~~ mobile site. http://i.listnook.com or http://listnook.com/.compact
21
merreborn Sep 5, 2014 +21
I use the mobile site all the time. Up to 60 minutes a day, every day riding the train. I couldn't give you a really good reason *why* I do, but I do. The mobile site very clearly doesn't receive development attention. * The new(ish) comment saving feature never got implemented on the mobile site. * The new /r/live feature doesn't work. e.g. http://listnook.com/r/live.compact http://www.listnook.com/live/tdrph3y49ftn/.compact * Moderation doesn't work Also, annoyingly, listnook.com link submissions boot you back to the desktop version of the site. e.g. http://www.listnook.com/r/bestof.compact is a bunch of links to the desktop site. Same with links in comments. The mobile experience would be much better if these links were rewritten to append .compact. So, it's there. And it's pretty decent (decent enough that I can use it daily). But it's missing an ever-increasing list of features.

Sorry but I hate the mobile site it looks like it's from the 90s or something

When I came from the Digg brigade, I thought the same for the desktop site.

###UHH...do you not realize that there's two mobile sites? http://i.listnook.com/ is the modern one, although it needs some minor fixes. http://m.listnook.com/ is the old one. Instead of dicking around with f****** apps (I don't want to open an app for a single site!), listnook should just spend a week finishing up the mobile site. It was going so well and then suddenly it just got abandoned in 2011.

My main gripe is the infinite scroll. I might browse listnook for quite a while at a time and if I click on a link, when I want to return, it puts me way at the top again. Also if you scroll long enough it'll become choppy. It would be useable if they allowed you to view pages, but for now I can't use it.

Never, I feel like even Joan Rivers will die before we'll get a Listnook app.

Huh. Interesting. Can someone explain to me, however, the difference between this and say, Bacon Reader or Alien Blue?

redditor1983 Sep 5, 2014 +11
As far as I can tell it's an app dedicated solely to making AMAs easier to consume. I don't think it provides access to the entire site. From what I understand, Listnook sees AMAs as being a big business driver. They bring in a lot of site traffic, etc. I think this app helps people who are not familiar with Listnook participate in AMAs. I asked a similar question to yours in another thread a few days ago (i.e., why should I use this if I already have a Listnook app?) and received no satisfactory response. That leaves me to believe that daily Listnook users are not the target of this app.

Haven't checked out the app yet, so this might sound like a stupid question - does it include the AMAs of other sublistnooks?

chiliedogg Sep 5, 2014 +5
I like it for the most part. I think the "answered" post on the current AMA with Sarah Chalke as the second guest points to an issue with any AMA with multiple guests. There's only one "OP." Is there any way to use flair to tag the other guests for the app for the "answered" category?

Since you're developing this, is there a chance you'll make an official listnook app for android?

Universal app for Windows Phone and Windows 8 would be even better. Wunderlist is an outstanding example of a great universal app.

How good is Wunderlist in terms of being a to-do list app? Is it handy for practical use?

I think it's just an OS at this point... You can flash it on an Android phone. Edit: [a cap for you](http://i-cdn.phonearena.com/images/articles/97650-thumb/firefox-os-mobile.jpg) and apparently phones are on the way. Lets hope they learn a lesson from Windows and go for quality apps over quantity. I like Windows phone as a concept but they really need to fix their app store...

I prefer Baconography to Baconit, but Baconography is outdated. Readit is pretty nice though.
6
MrUncreativeMan Sep 5, 2014 +3
What are the flaws that people find with baconit, Im curious.
3
jonnywoh Sep 5, 2014 +7
I can't answer for anyone else, but there are a few small things I feel are lacking from Baconit. - Lack of markdown formatting in full comments view - No way to save comments There are also some things that I feel Readit does better. - I think it looks better. However, being largely a stereotypical programmer, I'm not good at quantifying that. - Default styles aren't bad, but they seem to take up a lot of space (see: panorama headers). Readit seems to do a good job of keeping things compact while also presenting as much information as I would like. - Readit makes comment hierarchy more obvious by displaying a number of lines to the left of a comment, the number of lines corresponding to the number of parents the comment has. I'm not sure how much the average listnookor cares about this, but I find it helpful quite often. - Flipping between the link/text and the comments is quick and easy. - Editing flairs in-app - Miscellaneous other small features that make ~~life~~ listnooking easier. That said, there are a few things Baconit does better. - Baconit makes it easy to collapse a comment with a double-tap or a sideways swipe. Readit requires that you tap the username/flair to collapse. - The trial lasts only 15 days. - No ability to star subs. Readit offers to pin subs to Start, but I prefer not to. - A profound lack of bacon. ^^^^These ^^^^my ^^^^opinions ^^^^and ^^^^not ^^^^a ^^^^professional ^^^^review ^^^^or ^^^^endorsement. ^^^^The ^^^^list(s) ^^^^above ^^^^is/are ^^^^non-exhaustive. ^^^^By ^^^^reading ^^^^the ^^^^letter ^^^^'I' ^^^^at ^^^^the ^^^^beginning ^^^^of ^^^^this ^^^^comment ^^^^you ^^^^accept ^^^^all ^^^^liability ^^^^for ^^^^any ^^^^problems ^^^^caused ^^^^by ^^^^reading ^^^^this ^^^^comment. ^^^^You ^^^^also ^^^^forfeit ^^^^your ^^^^rights ^^^^to ^^^^say ^^^^or ^^^^think ^^^^negative ^^^^things ^^^^about ^^^^me. ^^^^Point ^^^^2.2 ^^^^is ^^^^an ^^^^exception ^^^^to ^^^^the ^^^^latter ^^^^half ^^^^of ^^^^point ^^^^2.1. ^^^^The ^^^^parentheses ^^^^in ^^^^the ^^^^fine ^^^^print ^^^^were ^^^^a ^^^^pain ^^^^to ^^^^deal ^^^^with.

The way they are stacked I can't tell if the AMAer is replying to an original comment or a reply to their comment. I'd add something to differentiate replies from original comments

Very slick interface, kudos. My main suggestion would be that it needs a night mode.

Avalie Sep 5, 2014 +2
I downloaded the app and I agree that it is a very beautiful setup. Thanks for getting it out on Android so quickly. One of my only issues with it so far is that on AMAs with two people, you can only see the OP's replies and not the second person's (like with Jay Chandrasekhar and Sarah Chalke). Some kind of solution that flags the second person as relevant to the AMA would be lovely!

With 'share app usage' on by default! Has Listnook admin learnt nothing from the Listnook posts about 'information r***'?

brads005 Sep 5, 2014 +2
Great! But, I've wondered for a long time... Why is there no 'official' listnook browsing app? Are the third party apps made by anyone at listnook? It just seems so strange that there's still no official version after this site has emerged as a popular place online.

Why does the app need my device id and call information? I see no reason for it.

It looks very nice. The thing I don't like is when I hit the back button, after reading a post, it reloads and takes me back to the top. Then I have to scroll back down to where I was.

It has an option called "AMA notifications" that i suppose it should notify you when there is a new AMA. I did not receive anything since i installed it (two days now).

I think that the AMA/advertising part of listnook is driving it in the wrong direction. Is it wrong of me to think that? As listnook increases ever more in popularity it attract the masses but by doing this I feel it have lost sight of its roots. By driving traffic with celebrity AMAS and pictures of jokes from TV shows we lower the value I have of listnook as a place to learn new things. In 2007 USC showed that learning new things can cause opioid release in your brain, learning is addictive. As listnook becomes filled with easy to digest picture content (that is so rarely original or funny even) it becomes just another buzzfeed spamblog. I value listnook, but not for this. Does that make me wrong? Should I not voice my opinion when these issues come up?

Will the upcoming AMAs list be added in a future update? My biggest problem is I have a hard time keeping track of when AMAs are going to happen.
