> “I paid off my student loans like three months into ‘The Pitt,’ and that was a really profound moment because I thought I was gonna die with it,” Ball said through tears. “It’s a huge burden to carry, and a lot of people carry it. I was $80,000 in debt and I had been through a series of failed relationships where my financial insecurity was a real problem. I had just thought that was going to be my life forever, and that is a really heavy thing to live with.” > Ball added, “Paying off those student loans and getting back to zero, I remember being like, ‘Man, if this show works, great. If it doesn’t work, they can’t take that away from me. I am out of debt.’ No take-backsies on that.”

I’m genuinely happy for him. It's such a relief to have that weight lifted off your shoulders. A weight that some of us bear on a daily basis.

Good for him to share that story. Felt the same way too with my student debt.

We fight so hard for what our government should just give to us for free.

Well it's not free. The money comes from somewhere.

I’d rather my taxes go to education and health care instead of the military-industrial complex and Israel. Call me crazy 🤷🏽‍♂️

I want my taxes to pay for the people around me to be smarter and more capable than the current system has allowed. That’s where the money comes from. Us. Collectively.

I went to college in the 80s. My student loans were manageable, and I paid them off in the first couple of years after graduating. That said, I would love it if college were free to all. Our country and economy would benefit greatly if our citizens were better educated.

If I get accepted into USC, my tuition would be free because I’m a poor person. That’s half the reason I even want to go there. No school in the state I actually live in has a similar policy.
41
Unkept_Mind 4 days ago +22
The UC system operates this way also. If you make less than ~$80k they pay your full tuition. I was just offered free tuition from every campus I applied last week which is life changing.

Yeah, but.. does that make the populace more easy to manipulate? Stop being selfish and think about it from the politics/lobbying/advertising standpoint. /s

How does taxpayer funded college tuition make the populace more easy to manipulate? Plenty of people get free community college & they aren’t what you’d call “easy to manipulate.” I think you’re saying that if the government fully funded education then they’d be in a position of making sure lies & manipulation were slipped into the education, but that’s why there’s bipartisan oversight committees & legal standards that colleges have to meet to be accredited. IMO free education would be game-changing. If everybody were college educated, there would be so many creative thinkers solving problems left & right making society a better place & improving the economy hand-over-fist.

You're reading it wrong. They're asking IF free college improves manipulability, with the implied answer of "no."

It was sarcasm. Lol. I’ll put the /s

I would definitely consider pursuing my master's if college were free. I have a BA but still.

Flashy_Jello_9520 4 days ago +3
In the 80’s your college was probably 5k/year.

RunsfromWisdom 4 days ago +2
Agreed. I wouldn’t even necessarily complain if it wasn’t free, just reasonable.

i went to college in the 80’s also and didnt pay them off until they garnished tax returns in the 90,s AND then after the current administration took office in Jan they showed up on my credit report. Have spent 50 plus hours on the phone with everyone dept of ed related and the credit agencies. No luck. still showing in default and no way to remove or show I paid. it actually says 1987 on the credit report. Its not just the affordable, proprietary nature or any other arguments, the whole system is a mess

Took me a few decades. That feeling was pretty great with that $0.00 balance!

*Caddyshack* came out in 1980 and the main character Danny Noonan entire purpose is caddying to pay for college. Though, to be fair, not a single avocado toast in sight (/s).

Nice of him to acknowledge that and be open about it. There are millions dealing with what seems like insurmountable debt and for him to say, I was there too, I was scared and felt stuck, and feel lucky for the opportunity I was given, is humble and grounded.

As someone that was in almost the exact same position debt-wise this is incredibly relatable. Hitting zero was one of the biggest reliefs of my life up to this point.

If the Pitt gets cancelled there will be lots of work for him at Warner Bros acquisition after the acquisition: >They would bring me in as an actor so that these administrators could get practice firing someone.

Looking at the way some Americans vote, free university or at least heavily subsidised would be of great benefit to the entire human civilisation.

As a European, I was like ''how the f*** can a responsible adult be 80k in debt?''. And then I read it and remembered that America is a capitalist nightmare.
11
MaximumAd9779 4 days ago +6
I will never forget the ultra-conservative Brazilian influencer who came to the USA thinking it was conservative heaven, only to leave disgruntled and pissed because he had to visit one of our ERs, subsequently pay for it, and all-in-all gathered that this land is neither socialist or conservative. It’s a society designed to take your money at all costs. The only public threat greater than conservatism is capitalism. Even in The Handmaids Tale, it’s implied that they, too, had universal healthcare in Gilead.

Because Americans are saddled with all that debt when they're irresponsible teenagers.

That's about where I am at because I went to a UC school. Average student debt is somewhere around 52k for Americans It's insane.

Possible-Wallaby-877 4 days ago +3
A full year of university where I'm from is about 1200 euros. Even less if you are eligible for grants if your parents don't make a lot of money. And it's one of the top universities in Europe too.

As someone who had 475,000 in student loan debt, I will frame the zero account balance when it happens this August. I signed up for it and knew what the outcome was. I can absolutely relate the the joyous feeling that will happen soon. I wish college was free for all

Just looked it up - it is. https://www.drama.yale.edu/about-us/gift-faqs/ "Beginning with the 2021-22 academic year, and in perpetuity, all students enrolled full-time in degree and certificate programs, including MFA and Certificate in Drama students, Technical Interns, and DFA candidates, will receive 100% tuition remission."

Selling my first house was the best decision I made in my younger years because it got me out of negative net worth, which included 90k of student loans, and into positive territory. I never looked back after that. I’m happy he found a way to get back to zero. I hope the Pitt works out for him and the entire crew.

I'd also cry if I found a job that wiped out my loans, and mine are less than half of his. I can only imagine how crushing it must've been, especially while trying to make it work as an actor. Glad it worked out for him.

Literally everybody thinks student debt is dumb. How has the country as a whole not figured out a solution yet?
1
BrooklynLivesMatter 4 days ago +2
Because that isn't true. There's a very, very small number of people profiting heavily off of student loans and a larger number that feel like it's the students' fault because of some moral responsibility argument I fall into neither camp but here we are
2
pjschultz 4 days ago +1
Because people too dumb to go to college and accrue said debt are voting to keep everyone else down with them.

What a fucked up country we live in. Tie down kids to these large student loans with the thought they will instantly find their dream job
1
derpferd 4 days ago +2
It's deliberate. People are easy to exploit when you make them desperate. It's not shocking that there's a billionaire class that has close political relations. Make people desperate with getting out of debt, finding work, healthcare. You'd think a government for the people would be there for the people but...

80k? Pffft, laughs in mortgage
0
9879528 1 day ago +1
At least with a debt due to a mortgage there’s a tangible, sellable, article. Student loan debt doesn’t have that.
1
DckThik 1 day ago +1
That is true but a good swath are negative assets for around the first 5ish years.
1
9879528 1 day ago +1
Negative but leverage-able. Student loan debt has zero leverage.
1
DckThik 1 day ago +1
Yeah lol, leverage against them.
1
9879528 1 day ago +1
Not really. A mortgage can be used as collateral for a car loan. A student debt isn’t collateral for anything
1
DckThik 1 day ago +1
lol yeah I guess that’s true 🤣 what are they go do, repo your degree?
