What happened with them? I’ve never been to one, they’re not around these parts, but I heard they got super lax on the whole “no cell phones, a******” rule which was like their whole thing, at least to an outside observer.

Alamo Drafthouse was an experience. Decent menu, alcohol, and the promise that people will behave or get banned. Loved going there whenever I was in Austin.
Now, they're *focused* on using your cell phone for the full ordering system, contradicting themselves and trying to play it off as a joke, and trimming costs vs having the experience that made their reputation what it was.
In a way, it's a great representation of enshittification.

Figures since they were bought recently and majority owned by Sony.
If it was me, I’d let mobile orders before move starts. No food orders during movie in theater. You can go to a kiosk right outside that is also playing the movie sound and video on a small screen
The seats have a button for refill requests only : drinks, popcorn , or candy.

This is wrong on the app front. You only order with your phone before the movie starts — anything else during the movie is the old card system.

Yeah so I live in Austin and have an Alamo drafthouse movie pass so we’re there all the time still. So witnessing this transition. So yeah. Before you had this menu and before the movie, a waiter will check tickets and scan a card, and then you just use the notepad and hit a button during the movie and the waiter will come and grab that card. No transition today, instead of the waiter coming in the beginning, he still comes but directs you to the app, lock in your credit card. You still order on the notepads during the movie itself. But every other seat has a menu which is odd. But also the food is mid, my wife and I try to eat before the movie. Maybe getting a pretzel or popcorn and drinks. But now it seems like every non Alamo theatre has this similar concept. So it’s becoming competitive. Being in Austin though, Alamo is still my go to theatre but I think that’s more on location and less on experience. At the end of the day it’s all the same and I’m just there to watch a movie, that hopefully has an original plot.

I stopped going when they wouldn’t let me in a minute after the movie had started cuz it would be too distracting, even though their servers and people going to the bathroom go in and out of the theater the whole time. I ordered through fandango and it didn’t have a warning about that policy but I couldn’t get a refund because the movie had already started.
Like, I understand it’s ultimately my fault that I was in that situation for not knowing the policy, but that doesn’t change the fact that no other movie theater (that I’m aware of) on the planet cares whether you’re on time or not, and as the husband to a chronically behind schedule person I simply cannot risk the ticket money on the chance I might miss the whole movie instead of just a few previews.

Not only did they get super lax, they moved their entire ordering process to digital so now the only way to order something during the movie is to take your phone out. I used to not mind paying a couple extra dollars to see movies there since I knew I wouldn’t deal with phones and people talking but now I refuse to support that change

Obviously it's cost control but just put kiosks outside of the auditorium where people can get up and place an order before or during the movie without f****** over 100 people's expensive viewing experience.

I haven’t lived near an Alamo Drafthouse in years but this change actually does sound better to me.
People coming to take the orders is pretty distracting and most people do the majority of their ordering before the movie even starts from what I recall. Sounds like people using their phones would just speed the process up.
I’d hope that they at least say to put your phone away if you aren’t ordering.
2
hash303Mar 31, 2026

They used to remove people for having their phones out, now they suggest it. Thats basically the whole issue from people who previously liked Alamo. They still walk out and deliver the food to you during the movie. nothing on that side has changed. There aren’t any fewer employees walking in front of you during the movie with the change
5
Rich_Housing971Apr 1, 2026

There are fewer employees because there's no employee while the order is being placed. Are people just being dense on purpose here or do they have some sort of disorder that makes them triggered whenever they see a piece of technology?

2
hash303Mar 31, 2026

It’s not nearly half as often because, as you said, most people order before the movie. Now you just get a worse experience the entire movie because people have their phones out doing more than just ordering. All the people upset at the change disagree with you that phones are less distracting
1
Rich_Housing971Apr 1, 2026

But you can order before the movie starts. Your math isn't mathing. People are coming into the aisle less often.
I've eaten at both Drafthouse and Cinebistro. Never again. I hate ushers going into the aisle. Is that supposed to make the movie better for overpriced food?
The only time when the visit is reasonable is when you're on a tight schedule and want to eat and watch a movie at the same time. Otherwise, you get a better experience watching a movie at a normal theater, and you get a better experience with food at a good restaurant.
I'm not saying the food at Drafthouse is BAD, but it's not worth the price of food.
You don't like people on phones? Stop watching slop. I've seen a grand total of 2 times people were on the phone during the movie, one was a Marvel movie, I think Infinity War, the other was some Jason Statham 2020s movie, can't even remember the name.

Not all Alamos are QR-only, but even the ones running a "hybrid" system where you order via QR before the start of the movie and then use paper order cards for refills and anything else afterwards still have the crappier menu and way more reliance on the fallibility of the app and your location's WiFi.
And I always liked to tip in cash, and I can't do that anymore...and there's no guarantee that 100% of the tips are going to the staff, since they're going to be passed through so many middleman systems...only to be more easily taxable because they're electronic and not physical.
4
sloppyjo12Mar 31, 2026
+2
I thought that first part too that they weren’t all QR-only, but at least the one near me in Chicago was hybrid for a bit as a transition but when I went this past weekend it had fully swapped over. I’m guessing it’s a push from the top and they will all change sooner or later, but I admittedly haven’t really looked too much it or anything
2
kayl_breinharMar 31, 2026

Imaginary_Try_1408Mar 31, 2026
Alamo moved to an included service charge of 18% two or three years ago, which is not going to the staff. It goes toward paying the staff a higher hourly wage (in theory), but is not required in any way to be paid to the server.
Also: as a service employee of about 18 years and a citizen who likes roads and public education, taxes are a good thing.
0
kayl_breinharApr 1, 2026

There's not a service employee I know or knew who wouldn't prefer $10 in cash in their pocket vs. $10 in the ether getting touched by half a dozen or more individuals and services before it finally finds its way into their bank account/wallet.

I called this at the beginning of S2E1 and I'm sticking with it:
Dr. Robbie is going to end his shift and ride off on his bike sans-helmet, and crash before he even gets out of the city. The last episode or two will revolve around the staff treating him, and I'm going to go out on a limb and say that they're going to kill him off.
Then next season Dr. Abbot slides into the main role. And if they don't kill off Dr. Robbie, he's going to be in a coma for the first few episodes of S3, and the rest he'll be doing PT and learning how to smell again.

The direction from Sony is to go full digital. My Alamo has done this already. If you've still got pen and paper, it's sadly just a matter of time until yours does too.

I like the episode where the resident looks in a woman's shoe and finds a dead black widow spider.....it really doesn't happen that way...

They literally picked the only theater chain that’s not in Pittsburgh

What’s dumb is the tickets are supposed to be for current and former healthcare workers, but anyone can get them. Why didn’t they give them out at the local hospitals instead? People will be in there just to get it and give spoilers

This appears to only be for their Victory members.

As someone who has been in a situationship with Greys anatomy, this show is very very good

Why? It's just another mediocre medical drama.

Can someone please explain to me the appeal of this show?
It's a medical drama. There a billion of them.
Why are people so up this ones ass?

It’s absolutely realistic. I learned about it from my doctor and nurse friends who love it.

Anonymous_PoscheMar 31, 2026
Ok so that's the draw? Medical professionals actually will vouch for it?
Thats interesting at least.

At least here in San Francisco that’s how I found out about the show in the first place. A Dr friend mentioned it and I’ve talked to a lot of people since then in the medical professionals field who have said it’s the only show that really gets it right.

My wife has watched Grey's Anatomy and I've seen Scrubs back in highschool, but The Pitt is as real as it gets for medical television shows. I've been hooked and the fact it incorporated a lot of real life events (i.e. COVID/Mass Shootings, etc.) and you see patients from all sorts of political or religious backgrounds interact with the staff in the manner we might experience while at the doctors is accurate.
Also, the way the show's episodes work is based off of every hour in their work shift. Episode 1 will be hours 6-7 AM and so on.

It's just really well done, the entire first season is just 1 shift in the ER, hour by hour.
Give it 3 episodes and see what you think, I haven't sacrificed sleep to binge on a show for years, but I did for season 1 of this.

The second season is the same hour-by-hour format. This week's episode will be 7:00 PM-8:00 PM.

> It's a medical drama. There a billion of them.
There are a million drama's that happen in hospitals. That is not the same.
The main draw here is showing the inner workings of a "realistic" ER.
The limited time per patient, the multi tasking, how real learning happens for student doctors (From cocky 20 year olds who think they know everything, to R1s that might have not done a procudure before, to how to deal with families or difficult patients)
The show also shows a real appreciation for healthcare workers, showing them as compasionate, professional, talented people working under difficult conditions and doing their best. Its a real love letter to a profession that seems to be getting more and more disrespected by the day (wellness industry growing, conspiracy theories, post covid nonsense etc)
Its competence p*** basically, if you have heard that term before, or like things like the martian for engineering

It has a sense of urgency no other medical shows have by making each episode take place in real time and right after the previous episode. It also portrays most aspects of an ER extremely realistically and deals with very current issues and problems related to health care.

Weird.
Season 2 doesn’t feel as high stakes as season 1.
Robbie is going to cry at the end. Maybe a little snot from his nose.
Mean asian student doc will be a little less mean.
Mean white girl doc will need help from Chris Pine looking doc.
Tall annoying student doc will be a little more humble.
Weird smiling child doc will get over mommy issues.
Annoying but then not annoying, but somehow still annoying new head doc will be less annoying and leave the show.
Other docs will do doc things.
And something something Baby Jane Dooooooeeeewww

Who are you classifying as “mean white girl doc”?
Because surely you’re not talking about Santos, who’s very clearly Filipina….

You can be white and Filipina. She is white. This does not make her less Filipina.

Alright, good to know. She's the only mean Filipina doctor then.
