I just finished a book about rabies and was quite surprised to learn that the first rabies vaccine consisted of rabbit spinal cord chunks marinated in veal broth. Totally serious

Urine you say? We’re doing some pretty special things with urine right here in America. [Anti-vaxxers are touting another new Covid ‘cure’ – drinking urine](https://theguardian.com/commentisfree/2022/jan/11/anti-vaxxers-covid-drinking-urine-misinformation)

31
neuroticoctopus Mar 24, 2026 +16
Do you think most Healthcare providers do?
16
churningaccount Mar 25, 2026 +46
Doctors as a profession are very close to 50/50 democrat/republican. It’s one of the most conservative PhD-level professions, with specialties like general surgeons trending more conservative with almost 2/3rds being republican, and pediatricians trending more liberal with that exact same tilt but towards being a democrat. This is one of the reasons why the AMA does not publicly support universal healthcare or Medicare-for-all. By contrast, nurses are about 70/30 democrat/republican.
46
JohnHazardWandering Mar 25, 2026 +30
Funny how it seems like doctors' relative income level correlate with political views.
30
Crafty_Memory_1706 Mar 25, 2026 +23
Control freaks and power over people. Republicans love that sh!t.
23
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +11
Apparently pediatricians heavily skew Democrat.
11
churningaccount Mar 25, 2026 +23
Yep, although the most liberal specialities are psychiatry and infectious disease. Meanwhile surgeons and anesthesiologists top the charts for conservatism.
23
Andovars_Ghost Mar 25, 2026 +18
Because surgeons are assholes and anesthesiologists spend the time while you’re asleep checking their stock portfolio.
18
kgal1298 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Now now my post nasal drip kept that anesthesiologist busy when I had surgery. Still kind of worried at their response about it when I woke up so now I wonder if I almost choked to death...
2
kgal1298 Mar 25, 2026 +7
All I know is my proctologist was a Republican...man went off about Bernie Sanders unprompted while I was being checked for polyps. Never went back to that guy like I get it man you don't like him, but totally not the right time to b**** about Bernie Sanders.
7
Crafty_Memory_1706 Mar 25, 2026 +5
OMFG. you aren't trying to imply or accurately project that democrats actually want to help children while churches and maga want to f$ck them, are you?
5
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +6
Not at all, but I could if you want.
6
PastelBrat13 Mar 25, 2026 +20
Especially speciality doctors and surgeons. A lot of the ER docs, pediatricians, gastroenterologists, neurologists I worked with were very sensitive and kind people. On the flip side a lot of the Ortho and cardiologists were full blown sociopaths. That’s my experience though.
20
TrailerTrashQueen Mar 25, 2026 +4
don't even get me started on thoracic surgeons. i'm looking at you, Cedars Sinai.
4
CharmingMechanic2473 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Agreed!
2
Rope_slingin_champ Mar 24, 2026 +19
Not Dentists. Thats for sure
19
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +11
There's always that 1 out of 10
11
jallen263 Mar 25, 2026 +10
I’m a dentist, I’m for it. I’m not stupid, I probably would lose some income but idc, I’m not in this to be rich af, I’m in it to take care of people. I don’t over treat people and when I go home I feel happy and honest.
10
Rope_slingin_champ Mar 25, 2026 +5
Sounds suspiciously like what a good Dentist would say. Im on to you sir
5
jallen263 Mar 25, 2026 +4
I try, but many of my colleagues have ruined the job for people. Also corporate dental. F*** corporate dental
4
exoriparian Mar 25, 2026 +9
Dentists are to MDs as Romulans are to Vulcans.
9
Rope_slingin_champ Mar 25, 2026 +10
Ahh, a person of culture
10
elinamebro Mar 25, 2026 +3
Don't loop privately owned dentists with corporate dentists. For those who don't know its the corporate brand own dentists they try to rip you off by trying to get you to get treatment you dont need.
3
YoungSerious Mar 25, 2026 +23
As another doctor, I would say it's growing in favor of universal. There's some old head hyper conservative "bury my money in the backyard so the gov can't have it" guys out there. But every year as medicaid/medicare reimbursement continues to tank and less groups can survive on that, combined with growing population dependence on those two things means basically every doctor is going to continue to get less and less money. Insurance fucks us over on reimbursement, which limits what we can do for patients too. So in my experience, the smarter doctors all agree it's a better option.
23
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +8
Wouldn't it also cut down on administrative costs and labor?
8
mosquem Mar 25, 2026 +6
Doctors in Europe make a fraction of what they do. That’s probably what they’re worried about.
6
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +2
Do you think it would be worth the salary cut if it was bundled with cheaper college and reforms to lower the cost of malpractice insurance? Those, along with a better work/life balance are perks that European doctors deal with.
2
PastelBrat13 Mar 25, 2026 +8
Unfortunately a lot of healthcare providers are MAGA or apolitical (diet MAGA). Worked as a nurse for years and saw it a lot more than I would like.
8
neuroticoctopus Mar 25, 2026 +6
I've got an anti-vax Republican nurse for a sister, so I believe it.
6
stellae-fons Mar 25, 2026 +6
From what I've heard from my best friend who is a nurse, most of them are a special kind of mean and stupid.
6
samdajellybeenie Mar 25, 2026 +3
Every doctor I know calls for it.
3
Mehthisgirl Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yes - commercial health care fucks them too.
2
Crafty_Memory_1706 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Already, most private clinics are becoming unsustainable due to poor ability to get paid. Harder to just functioning as a business. It's just so bad, you give up and say, if they could make it predictable, I'll take less money a year.
2
CharmingMechanic2473 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yes. Most HC workers who deal with insurances, and prescribing do.
2
IncorrectRedditUser Mar 25, 2026 +3
Depends on if they like their bank account or people more. I happen to agree with Universal Healthcare, but also understand American doctors are usually against it, especially specialty doctors as it would drastically impact their income. Would doctors become poor? Not even close, but risking losing the summer home is rough for some.
3
Crafty_Memory_1706 Mar 25, 2026 +13
Also real doctor here, also calling for it. What's sad is, this entire ecosystem is very likely to crash first. Like when they bailed out the auto companies. It's so much more expensive to bail it out than it would have been to fix it pro actively.
13
kgal1298 Mar 25, 2026 +3
TBF we could probably afford if we took it from the defense budget...but you know nothing like paying for a 100B plane that gets shot down first thing than do anything for your own people.
3
elinamebro Mar 25, 2026 +12
Didn't they already do the math and show that it was possible and also cheaper than the system we have now?
12
TreasureTheSemicolon Mar 25, 2026 +14
Absolutely. This study was backed by the far right Koch brothers and they wanted to show that universal healthcare could never work in the US but oops, they proved the opposite: https://www.thenation.com/article/archive/thanks-koch-brothers-proof-single-payer-saves-money/
14
kgal1298 Mar 25, 2026 +6
Awww I hope David is enjoying hell his brother shall meet him soon.
6
Obstipation-nation Mar 25, 2026 +7
Also real doctor here 🙋🏼‍♂️ and I, too call for universal healthcare.
7
Zenmachine83 Mar 25, 2026 +6
Firefighter here, also calling for single payer system. Our system is a dumpster fire that only serves to enrich insurance, hospital and pharma execs at the expense of everyone else.

8

Broke rando. I also call for it!
4
AppUnwrapper1 Mar 25, 2026 +5
Thank you. I get so turned off when I mention wanting universal healthcare bc my insurance is expensive and pays for nothing, and a doctor tells me “you don’t really want universal healthcare.”
5
Traversethevoid Mar 25, 2026 +5
I'm a 50 year old guy who is insured through my job. Haven't seen a doctor since 2008. Got convinced to take better care of my self by someone at work. So I started making appointments and getting stuff done. Canceled my appointments after the medical bills started to roll in. Just because people have insurance doesn't mean they can afford to use it. Our healthcare system is broken. Single payer is the way to go.
5

I swear if all it took was Noah Wyle to say something… I mean, I’ll be thrilled if we finally get it but I’d feel even more confused about how the world works than I already do.
2
raginTomato Mar 25, 2026 +2
Serious question, are you ready for your pay cut that comes with that? It means gone with the days of doctors making 500k-1M+ a year.

Disabled person living in a blue state here, everyone should have what I have. Medicare for all.

Yeah can we charge them with a hate crime? Federal Gov: That not a hate crime. Well I hated it.
6

Wouldn’t be shocked if some of those violent goons are illegals too Trump and Tom Homan need any excuse to continue their circus acts

“And who would pay for this universal healthcare?” *proceeds to drop billions on a whim to fund idiotic wars overseas*
26

And there’s some left but we’re going to personally pocket that so make sure you pay your taxes!
5

Best Americans voters can do is vote for the party that hates this idea.
10

FreeStateOfPortland Mar 24, 2026 +2
And give government positions to black out drinks who think the “teleported” to a waffle jiuse
2
rysker6 Mar 24, 2026 +309
Because we should have it Every major first world country has universal healthcare We are the richest country in the world By that metric alone; we can afford it You deserve healthcare
309
elinamebro Mar 25, 2026 +67
They already ran the numbers, its cheaper safes about 500 billion a year. The downside you might have to pay more in taxes but I assume no one would have a issue with that. Also I believe it will be cheaper for the gov to get the meds that Americans need since they can negotiate the prices.
67
Extinction-Entity Mar 25, 2026 +65
The increase in taxes is still less than current monthly premiums so it is cheaper all around.
65
AuroraFinem Mar 25, 2026 +16
Yeah but then it would be worse care for the richest people who don’t care about others and the poorest people who can’t afford insurance just risk not buying it but they can’t avoid taxes. So those two groups are out. You also gotta consider people like joe making $80k/yr who are definitely going to win the loto and doesnt want to be taxed more when he hits it big. Oh wait, those are just republicans.
16
elinamebro Mar 25, 2026 +3
True that
3
mbn8807 Mar 25, 2026 +3
i don't know why companies and state governments aren't calling for it, when you do your taxes you can see what your employer paid in premiums and its staggering.
3
Extinction-Entity Mar 25, 2026 +2
Not to mention, a healthy workforce that isn’t stressed about healthcare is more productive. But THEN they couldn’t tie us down to shit jobs by dangling the bennies in our faces, and this enables them to do the bare minimum and expect a “thank you.”
2
aaelias_ Mar 26, 2026 +2
Exactlyyyy
2
Alex3884 Mar 25, 2026 +7
We sort of do with Medicaid and Medicare but that’s only for the elderly or people with low income, or in the case of my son, disabled.
7
stinkpot_jamjar Mar 25, 2026 +16
So, in other words, we have nothing like universal healthcare lol
16
xtrawork Mar 25, 2026 +5
It's exactly the same, but completely different.
5
Pitiful-Accident5485 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Ultimately only because private companies won’t do it.
2
Tracedinair76 Mar 24, 2026 +284
I usually don't care about celebrity opinions but he has been studying our health care "system" for decades and this is a solution that works in every other industrialized country in world (except Iran they use a system like ours). So yeah I agree Noah.
284
VQQN Mar 25, 2026 +33
He’s obviously right. A cough or stomach ache are mostly nothing and people don’t want to spend $200 on a trip to the doctor to hear “You’re fine, just a little bug.” Waste of money. Waste of time away from work. Food and hygiene care may have to take some sacrifices to make up for the cost. Then the time they decide not to visit the doctor to waste $200 they are dead in six months.
33
gassyfrenchie Mar 24, 2026 +52
He’s been in two critically acclaimed series revolving around the American healthcare system. I think he is probably as familiar as any medical staff member at this point.
52
UserWithno-Name Mar 24, 2026 +62
His mother is a nurse. The show research and on set actual professionals who educate and advise does a lot, but the upbringing does a lot too.
62
runninginorbit Mar 24, 2026 +20
Yeah, my mom studied architecture, I knew way more about urban planning and design than a friend who literally was at an Ivy League school trying to get a Master’s in urban planning. He’s now graduated and works at a firm so he def has more knowledge than me at this point, but I was surprised at how a lot of things that seemed very intuitive to me did not occur to him at all. E.g. I made an offhand comment about how I saw a certain artist’s sticker repeatedly on a bunch of street signs where we lived, he apparently never really paid attention to the stickers people were putting on street signs before. There were various other things he also didn’t know about, but that was one that really surprised me.
20
UserWithno-Name Mar 25, 2026 +4
Ya I mean I know people are dismissive and he's actually not a doctor but if it's versus anyone on the street, he is more qualified as are a lot on the show and I'd still say I'd trust him to know enough in emergencies or be able to at least offer general advice. People d******* how much you can learn from who you spend lots of time around, are raised by, how much you dig into the topic, and yes also pretending to be that thing or just advocating for yourself/ not wanting to be mislead or screwed over. Being her son and all the years on a job totally informed from that industry, he probably knows pretty well the ins and outs & how ridiculous it is we are still tying healthcare to a job. Also imagine the change or raises that could occur if your coverage / access wasn't tied to your job and they didn't have to cover it. Private optional plans would still be available.
4
SatansFurryButtboy69 Mar 25, 2026 +4
Same here. When I watch The Pitt, I'm actually able to pick up on about half the terms right away. If I don't understand, I ask her. Obviously I don't know nearly as much as a medical professional, but I find i can quickly grasp certain medical concepts that others might miss. For example, you ever see in a show where a character gets hospitalized, but the doctor or nurses won't let them leave until they're better? I hate that trope bc I know it's total BS. Patients can leave the hospital whenever they want, and hospital staff can't force them to stay and accept treatment, or they would face criminal charges. So whenever I see that I roll my eyes.
4
YoungSerious Mar 25, 2026 +4
>Patients can leave the hospital whenever they want, and hospital staff can't force them to stay and accept treatment, or they would face criminal charges. That's not always true. The main and basically only deciding factor is their mental status, and whether we (medical providers) feel they understand the potential consequences of their choices, and whether they have the mental capacity at that time to make that decision.
4
Sifsifm1234 Mar 25, 2026 +4
Lmao what
4
p001b0y Mar 25, 2026 +3
He also knows what it’s like to not have it from all those seasons on _Falling Skies_. /jk
3
Arch-by-the-way Mar 24, 2026 +27
I’m fully agreeing with what he’s saying, but I think it’s a stretch to say he’s been studying the health care system because he acted in 2 hospital shows.
27
RoyalRobinBanks Mar 24, 2026 +51
His mom was a nurse, health care has been something important to him all his life.
51
Tracedinair76 Mar 24, 2026 +39

27
dday3000 Mar 25, 2026 +24
It’s so difficult to figure out only 39 of 40 developed countries have universal healthcare.
24
largelawattorney Mar 24, 2026 +73
“We are pleased to announce that ICE agents will be available to anyone in need of medical care for free!”
73
wanderingAtlas Mar 24, 2026 +4
What? I can't tell if this is a dig at The Pitt or just the US in general. But I'm watching the Pitt right now and the ICE storyline is definitely not pro-ICE if thats what you're getting at? They're very much portrayed as the violent and evil thugs they are.
4
emseefely Mar 25, 2026 +13
It’s a nod to the current ICE scandal being deployed to help TSA. Not at all a dig at the show
13
largelawattorney Mar 25, 2026 +3
👍 Offering ICE agents for medical care instead of just giving people some form of free healthcare100% sounds like something these dummies would do
3
FangornLeghorn Mar 25, 2026 +14
Anyone who isn’t suffering from brain damage agrees. Our for-profit, capitalist-ball-sucking US healthcare system is f****** garbage.
14
pandaappleblossom Mar 25, 2026 +6
We are paying a billion dollars a day to attack countries thousands of miles away and in the meantime all we want is healthcare!!!!
6
CheezTips Mar 25, 2026 +4
Don't forget our crumbling infrastructure. There's never any federal money to fix 100 year old dams, water mains and bridges. Things we rely on every single day.
4
daisydoesndoesnt Mar 25, 2026 +7
Canadian here. Wyle is right, universal healthcare is a good idea. What would a US version be like?
7
Pisstoffo Mar 25, 2026 +3
The US Version would be something like this: The government orders a meeting with the heads of all private health insurance companies. Elon Musk walks in and takes a chainsaw to the desk they are seated behind. They are then informed that they all must sell off their assets to the US Government and Elon will be in charge of streamlining operations for national security. We won’t have communism, socialism single payer, we’ll have America First Single Patriot. Tax payer funds are used to purchase all the companies. Single Patriot is the best healthcare system in the world. It’s accepted everywhere in the US, except California, and it works by you loading up your 4547 Card with Trump Coins before each Doctor visit (or you won’t be seen). You lose 15% in the exchange rate, but at least you don’t need to pay for vaccines now - as those are banned. If you need an operation, or expensive procedure, you need to be able to prove you voted correctly and have at least 50% of your net worth in Trump Coin to cover costs. After the procedure, you may be sued for treason due to your net worth now having less than the minimum amount of Trump Coin. You can either go to court and risk a minimum of 25 years in private prison, or pay a suggested $2Million donation to the voting freedom fund. Oh, and “cancer” no longer exists. It turns out RFK Jr. discovered it was made up by scientists being paid by George Soros.

Yes, even the TV doctors know what most of the world already knows.

Too many people getting rich for this to change, unless citizens united is overturned. Good luck w that. Until there’s a decisive move to remove big money from politics we’re stuck this way.

Surely this is the push that Congress needed.

I have never met a doctor that isn't for UHC. I have worked in healthcare for 5 years, at every level insurance is despised. They are leaches that provide absolutely nothing to the system they infect.

48 year old male with two kids and a husband. I call for Universal Healthcare for all Americans too!
2
zardoz73 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I have long thought that the reason America will never have universal health care is the zero sum mindset. The kind of thinking that says there's only a limited number of people who can live the Good Life. Let's say you have an upper-middle class person, steady income, no financial worries, etc. They pay for private healthcare through their employer. UHC comes along and lifts up that scruffy-looking neighbor down the road. Middle-class guy thinks, "Hey...if that poor person gets a leg up, that *must* mean *I* will take a hit, it must mean *I* will have to pay more, it must mean the quality of *my* life will diminish!" This is zero sum thinking. There's also the general "hidden caste" at play. Rich folks don't want to put themselves on the same level as the poors. And racism, of course, plays into that as well.

Real Social Worker here. I also call for it! There are so many people who don’t take care of their mental health because they can’t afford it with insurance. Medicare for all please!

SDPLISSKEN009 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Never going to happen. America is way too greedy
2
MissAmberR Mar 25, 2026 +2
Most other developed countries can offer some level of public health care, but unfortunately in the us health care is a business and they are never going to let that go
2
MajorMorelock Mar 25, 2026 +2
How about a TV show where all Americans have universal healthcare. We have to start with a fictional world and show people what it could look like.
2
picklefingerexpress Mar 25, 2026 +2
Need to be cautious of wording …. Especially in post titles since most of us don’t read past them. “Coverage” implies insurance. Insurance is not healthcare. Insurance is a paid subscription to potentially be awarded money to put towards healthcare. What the rest of the world has is universal healthcare. Sadly, the propaganda is strong around this one and even most educated Americans struggle to grasp the actual concept.

Universal healthcare (Medicare for all) needs to cut out private insurers, which currently still have a carve out on at least 20% of federal coverage.
2
otomo88 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Single payer healthcare is the state owns the healthcare industry and it pays it with your taxes !
2
Worldly_Ingenuity387 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I call for it too. So.....what happens now.

moody_gray_matter Mar 25, 2026 +2
I work in benefits for the government and I also want universal healthcare. I'm f****** tired of coming into contact with employees who need medical coverage and can't get it/afford it. ALSO I want it to be f****** illegal for doctors offices to charge for filling out FMLA forms. So many of my employees make $15/hr and can barely afford to put food on the table. They need federal protection for their leave of absence and you're charging them money to fill out government documents??? I get so f****** irate about it.

The one TV doctor who knows his shit. He got arrested in 2012 for protesting against the abysmal healthcare system. I’m glad he gets to teach people the harsh realities of healthcare through The Pitt.

Maybe I should give this show a chance
4
Astro_Afro1886 Mar 25, 2026 +7
You should! It is excellent, especially if you like accurate medical jargon!
7
impy695 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I'll be honest, I don't know enough to know if a show is accurate or not. Like, I loved House, even though I assume it's pretty loose with accuracy (then again, I may be completely wrong, and it's actually very accurate. I did look it up, and regardless of accuracy, it sounds like a good show worth watching.
2
krillthemalll Mar 25, 2026 +3
It is a fantastic show but be prepared to cry here and there
3
impy695 Mar 25, 2026 +2
If a medical show doesn't make you cry sometimes then it's not a good show.

Didn’t obamacare try to help people, but then people claimed it did more damage than good?
7
Pyffindor Mar 24, 2026 +36
the affordable care act just helped more people get insured, it was a step forward but the system is still fucked.
36
flyinwhale Mar 24, 2026 +19
It did also force insurance to cover somethings they didn’t have to before. For instance I used to not get a yearly physical because it wasn’t covered unless I had met my deductible but ever since ACA I get 1 physical fully covered, also birth control wasn’t covered at all before ACA and now for the most part it is which was genuinely life changing for me
19
Arch-by-the-way Mar 24, 2026 +20
The ACA (Obamacare) is still fully in place and active.
20
Arcranium_ Mar 24, 2026 +7
...for now.

BadLuckBrian2025 Mar 24, 2026 +10
Much of the original promise was stripped because of congressional opposition (from Republicans). Could have helped so many more people if there was bipartisan support
10
earache30 Mar 24, 2026 +10
Joe Lieberman sunk single payer as an option in the ACA. POS.
