'The Pitt's John Wells Shares Timeline For Season 3 “The writers’ room opened up last week, and they’re at the end of their second week,” confirmed Wells during a chat on March 19. “We will be back in production in June, and plan to be back on the air again the same week in January with 15 episodes

I know it’s been said nonstop but it’s wild how simple their production process seems to be. It’s one massive set where we just go room to room. Must keep costs way down. The only thing really slowing them down is the writers and how long they’ll take to churn out new episodes and seasons

The continuity during production must be a pain in the ass though - they spend months producing a (near) real time show which has to look and feel like it's real time.
Hair/Makeup/beards/costumes/the set/their positions in time and other things all have to look the same over weeks/months.
It's like one big prolonged choreography - which they beautifully execute...

They film linearly. So instead of jumping around episodes, they do them in order. Everyone comes onto set in full costume, even if they have no lines that day. That lets them put main characters in the background and keep them consistent. You may be Noah Wyle, star of the show, but there will be days where you’re just standing at a desk somewhere in the background doing nothing the whole day. But it keeps continuity.
There have been a few interviews where they’ve gone over some of the logistics. It’s pretty interesting.

24 also went through the same thing but on a much different scale as it was multiple environments vs one single set. Wonder which is easier to deal with since multiple environments could have some continuity mistakes that aren’t picked up on whereas a single set like this is very easy to pick up on mistakes.

Love 24!
And I'm sure both productions have their difficulties - The Pitt probably has the advantage of looking back at those other real time shows and prepare for some of those challenges.
24 wasn't pioneering the real time format, but they took it to a different level back then with 24 consecutive hours in one season.

Yes, their sets are beautifully simple. But I think the most important part of it is John Wells, veteran Showrunner and he is one of the best to ever do it. His website [www.johnwellsproductions.com](http://www.johnwellsproductions.com) even has a whole section dedicated to teaching Showrunning and how it's done properly: [https://johnwellsproductions.com/how-we-make-tv](https://johnwellsproductions.com/how-we-make-tv). And he says THE (!!!) most important part of the whole production process and showrunning is having the finished drafts of the screenplays on time, because literally everyone else in the process depends on them. He says ONLY if you can gaurantee (mostly)finished drafts for all departments on time, they can do their work. If not, everything gets fucked up and delayed and everyone is miserable and it costs a shit ton of time and money.

More broadly, to release a season of a TV show every year requires contracts and hard deadlines with an annual schedule in mind.
On Severance, the writers take a long time and rewrite and revise until they're happy with the scripts. There's no deadline, so it takes however long it takes. And they *start* looking to decide when to film when the scripts are ready.
On Stranger Things, when they finish the scripts and are ready to film, they have to wait until David Harbour isn't busy with a Marvel movie and Millie Bobby Brown isn't busy with a Sherlock Holmes' sister thing. So even though the scripts are ready to go, they sit for months until their cast is available to begin production.
But on The Pitt or Law & Order, if the writers want to keep working for another two weeks to get the script just right, tough shit. Filming's about to start, so that episode script goes out the door no matter what. And if Noah Wylie or Mariska Hargitay is offered a part in a Marvel movie that films at the same time as their TV show, tough shit. Being available for their show's filming dates is written into their contracts, and if they get offered other work that conflicts with those dates, they either need to get the producers to agree to work around it or they have to say no.
27
stolenfiresApr 18, 2026

The Pitt also respects the actors' time. Like, ok, Dave Harbour has to go be Red Star for awhile. That still delays things for Finn Wolfhard, who might have to take a different job and that also messes up the timeline if he's gotta go back for reshoots or a publicity tour or whatnot.
But The Pitt is really clear. You film from this date to that one, do some publicity, and have a short time off before you're expected back on set again. That sort of predictable work is really, really valuable for actors.

People don't wanna address but shows getting ambitious and being movie level production is playing a huge part in the 2 years gaps
Every show people name when they are being nostalgic about the 22 episode every year format, were shot in closed mundane sets
(Even GoT is also an exception, cuz till S7, they had like three isolated plotlines with unconnected cast that they could film simultaneously in three different locations, an advantage the majority of shows do not have )
Harry Potter team before S1 production promised an yearly turnout and then recently admitted they can't do the one season every year due to all the massive set design and production, and I understand them.

I agree but also think the industry works at a different pace now. Pluribus was signed on from 2 seasons from the start. The show aired its first season and still hasn’t started writing the second season, despite not needing to wait for a renewal.
20
____mynameis____Apr 17, 2026

I think another reason is streaming.
Back in the day you could get the viewers numbers when it aired and make renewals and budget allocation based on that.
But due to binge culture of people waiting out on shows after release/ after its aired entirely most of these shows don't start writing process until like few months after airing and I think its due to studios waiting out on the viewership numbers and allocate a budget based on that

IDK man, LOST as an example was mostly not closed sets. They filmed most of their stuff outdoors. Still put out ~24 episodes per season with the exception of the last two because of writer strike stuff.
I don't think its unreasonable to achieve 12-14 episode seasons yearly for basically most shows that don't involve a shit ton of CGI (which can easily be reduced).
Not everything needs to have massive scope.

I mean, yes, but it wasn't filmed on the kind of sets that, say, Star Trek TNG used.
There is way more production overhead involved with filming outside - even on mostly abandoned beaches - than on a handful of small back-lot sets that a lot of shows used.

Yeah, the writing, directing and casting must all be pretty good at their jobs, because it seems like just about every actor on the show seems really good - including the patients who often are only on for an episode or two.
So it seems like they should be able to withstand actors leaving the show. If anything, they have so many good characters/actors right now, that if they lose 2 or 3 every year I don't think the show would lose much.
3

Overall, The Pitt shoots about the same total number of days as most other shows. Yes the sets are simpler but all the medical jargon can slow down the cast. They still shoot over the same span of time as many other dramas. The fast output and keeping the same yearly release dates are due to some other factors that are also an influence, such as starting writing of the next season sooner, locking down cast earlier, etc.

Was gonna point this out. This dude worked on JAG, ER, West Wing, Shameless, and 14 seasons for NCIS:LA. He knows what it takes to see a series consistently running. Add in Joe Sachs, John Wells, Noah Wyles, Michael Hissrich, and the rest of the folks who are EP and you have a crew that has a wild amount of experience working on shows that keep on the air. This shows success is the result of people who know their craft inside and out.

Its an actors and photographers show because the actors spend a lot of time developing subtle, nuanced performances showing emotions like grief and loss and determination. For how much bigger that show is with sets and CGI, I can live with that. At least they actively work on getting it done right after the season ends.

I know it's a British show and I'm not sure how if their production cycles are like that, but I've LOVED how Slow Horses puts a trailer for the next season at the end of the credits for the current season finale

1 in conversion from the books
1 filming
1 post production.
by the time the season in post production is ready to air, they've got enough finished footage (and final scripts!) to be able to put together the preview at the end of the season.
It only works because the actors and crew have proper, full time contracts on Slow Horses (not much crew turnover there!), so can keep doing their regular jobs like, well, a job, and the actors all know by and large when the filming window will be and can do other work around that.

Yeah the 3+ years between seasons is getting insane like I feel like a head to a year and half should be the turn around time for new seasons especially since we no longer get 22 episode seasons and we're more streamlining the episodes

I think one thing ppl forget is a huge contributor to large gaps was COVID and then the strikes bc it created delays and scheduling conflicts bc of impacted everything. Some shows will take longer but a lot of shows are more able to follow some resemblance of a consistent schedule.

It's down to your show runners. Networks used to rule with a bit of an iron fist but then networks like HBO, Showtime and AMC decided that they'd allow creators more time to get a better end product.
Now they're taking it too the extreme. They're not diligent with prep for the next season and some of these shows look more like movies, so the time to create them just takes a lot longer.
But this is why I'll never give Vince Gilligan the status most give him. He takes a huge amount of time between seasons and it hurts the end product. Actors get too old and it hurts the end product.

I mean for shows like this they've always been yearly. We aren't going to have the big budget, dozens of locations shows with CGI happening every year. And euphoria, along with several other shows, proves that even if you wait a few years the viewers still come back. There's so much content now that we don't need this arbitrary every 12 month window anyways. 12 months or 36 months, 99% of people still require a refresher going into a new season.

They're able to do that because they got renewed for season 3 and started filming on it before season 2 came out. Hopefully that'll be the case with a fourth season as well.

I would love a Season 2.5 (or 3.5 etc) that focuses on the night shift. It could pick up right after the previous season's dayshift or not, I don't care. But it'd be cool. Maybe work on that while airing the day shift season. I know there was mention of a spinoff for night shift but do we really need a whole new show just for the first episode to be titled "7:00 PM"?

This is why I personally didn’t mind this season being lower stakes and more of just a “normal” bad day for most of them. When one season comes out every 3 years then it better be incredible.
If I’m getting a season of FIFTEEN episodes every year? And they’re still this good? Yeah I’m in.

Helps distinguish it from Grey's too - and it's part of the "conceit" of the show, that's it's just a regular day shift in the ER.
They just pick the exciting days to show us, and they can more easily work around actor unavailability - Isa Briones isn't available for the first month of filming? Just say she overslept for a few hours.

tbh, it used to be that showrunners and producers to overworked and beholden to the networks and then the pendulum swung pretty far in the other direction where we treat showrunners like tortured geniuses who need a vision quest and 2 years of meditation to map out the next season and I really hope they can find a place in the middle where we foster creativity and storytelling but also recognize that as a product for the viewer, the years-long wait between seasons can be a big ask (looking at you Severance and Pluribus).
7
Ash_KillemApr 17, 2026

I know they have easier production, but still nice to see some consistency in TV again.
For higher productions, I feel the 15 episode mark is a good balance. Not the 22 episodes that were common but also not 8 episodes which is lame.

13
AbsolutelyperfectApr 17, 2026

No, that's not what happened. She was looking for a fellowship which happens after residency. In season 3 she would still be doing residency. The excuse they will use is that she is having a day off not that she left this ER or changed specialities. You're like the 100th person who got this wrong so at this point I can't even blame you, it's a failure on the show's part for not being more explicit on how it works.

This might sound stupid, but it would be amazing to have a “The Pitt: Night Shift”.
So the day crew leaves (end of season of The Pitt) - and the night shift comes in, and we follow them for a season until The Pitt returns.
Basically I can’t get enough of this show.

honestly, that would be cool.
but i also would like a (possible) final season to be 24 episodes.

If you are doing to do that as a finale you need to reverse it. Starts night shift goes into day shift. Having the main cast be presumably absent for most of the second half of the final season wouldn't go over well.

Crazy not so crazy idea - have a 20 episode season and start with the final 3-4 hours of the night shift and move into the day shift coming on. Then do the same thing at the end of the season..the turnover from day to night.
I love all of the doctors associated with the night crew and it would be nice to see more of them, but in a way that makes sense. Let the night shift deal with a big crisis and day deal with the repercussions.
