The Postman (1997)

Posted by Present_Impact_264

Just watched the postman (1997 with kevin Costner) I avoided watching it as many people said that it was shit and all that, but after just seeing it I think its a masterpiece I enjoyed every second of it, it was so good I actually wish it was longer. I absolutely font understand why its so hated, if anybody hasn't seen it I strongly recomend it.

I like it and it has Tom Petty in it.

I like to imagine one day there’ll be a miniseries or remake and Kevin Costner would have a cameo saying this line.

GlassCannon81 Mar 25, 2026 +7
This is exactly my take on this movie. My dad was a huge Tom Petty fan and we watched it together when it first came out on video. It’s not some incredible piece of art or anything like that, but it’s a fun movie, and as you say, it has Tom Petty in it.

Both Kevin Costner post-apocalyptic 90s movies were pretty good and get unnecessary hate

Scuffy-Mcgee Mar 24, 2026 +46
If I remember correctly - Waterworld got panned for its humongous budget, at the time. And the Postman got it because it was made right after Waterworld and was as a very similar theme - just not on water.
46
JBru_92 Mar 24, 2026 +36
What if Mad Max, but on water - but on land!

What if Mad Max, but on horses - but in America!

Postman was Mad Max with horses.

Kaiisim Mar 25, 2026 +3
Westworld wasn't panned - it was accurately reviewed as an okay film with lots of issues and not worth the huge huge budget. They're both 6/10 films that become 8/10 if you like apocalypse films. But the 90s when they were released the world was feeling hopeful, didn't really want apocalypse stuff anymore.

Ecstatic-Carpet-654 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I love post popyclipse movies, but while the Postman was certainly an 8, Waterworld was still a 6--though the smokers were pretty cool.
1
tony20z Mar 25, 2026
And they are both just reimagining Dances with wolves (Pocahontas) in new ways.
0
HustlinInTheHall Mar 25, 2026 +4
Postman mixes it up plot-wise, it's not just stranger in a strange land. The twist that he's a liar and then it gets out of hand so he winds up becoming who he was lying about is neat. And then this idea of the power of joining a community by consent vs kill or be killed enlistment in a militaristic/fascist society and what wins out is an interesting concept. It's basically what Fallout winds up exploring but it takes itself a bit too seriously. I think it mostly doesn't work for people now because Kevin Costner is not that charming to different generations. He's a kinda balding dude who talks with a weird drawl so it makes a slow movie feel even slower.

Couldn’t agree more…even water world was pretty good lol

Obi_Wan_Benobi Mar 25, 2026 +2
I saw Waterworld in the theater lol. Jet Skis in Mad Max, Dennis Hopper. Sure, why not.

Highly recommend reading the book. It’s really good.
48
jerkfaceroberts Mar 24, 2026 +13
Came here to say that. I was really stoked at the time as it was the first book I read that was turned into movie. Also, I was in middle school, so the target demographic for both. I was a little disappointed the movie didn't have the major plot point that made the book's ending so great. I fantasized about how they'd film it, what effects would be used, what that last dramatic shot would look like. But now the movie holds a small little place in my heart and I really hope they make a faithful adaptation.

eskimospy212 Mar 24, 2026 +7
I liked the book’s theme of responsibility as I feel our current crisis is largely a lack of responsibility. So many people seem to think they can break things and play with them like toys because a parent will come to save us. It’s not true and we have to care for ourselves.
7
supercodes83 Mar 24, 2026 +4
I love the movie and cant stand the book, ironically. I know I am in the minority but I find the book to be dreadfully boring.
4
TerrorFuel Mar 25, 2026 +4
Same. I hated the book. It throws in every 50s sci-fi cliche you can think of in to it.
4
Germerican88 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Same. I was excited to read the book because people kept saying the book was better. Wasn't my cup of tea. That being said, I absolutely understand why many book lovers didn't care for the movie.
2
peaphive Mar 25, 2026 +1
Im in the same boat as you loved the book did not like the book
1
RWaggs81 Mar 24, 2026 +15
Decent movie. I always liked how the villain was just some guy in normal life, but found his potential in a wasteland.
15
Nevic1984 Mar 24, 2026 +34
I thoroughly enjoy both Waterworld and The Postman Battlefield Earth is genuinely shit though.
34
Digitalon Mar 24, 2026 +3
Waterworld is a personal favorite, it was a financial disaster but still a great movie. Because of their dedication to using practical effects it hardly looks like it's aged a day and still holds up very well. It's been a long time since I watched The Postman but I remember good things about it. I always found it odd that Costner ended up in 2 completely distinct post apocalypse movies within just a couple years of each other, it was a genre of movies that had yet to become popular so that just makes it even weirder IMO.
3
AlternativeHour1337 Mar 24, 2026 -2
particularly because IMO madmax was genuinely bad before fury road, i watched those movies a few years ago back to back and my god, the amount of cheese is absolutely unbearable waterworld and postman had more ground to it
-2
Digitalon Mar 24, 2026 +2
I've never actually sat and watched the original MadMax movies, only seen clips here and there. I've heard they have aged pretty poorly but maybe I should buckle down and watch them just to say I have.
2
legitimate_business Mar 25, 2026 +4
The first one is a low budget, slow burn "society slowly collapsing" turned revenge flick. I could see it being released as an indie film today. Has some pacing issues. Road Warrior is balls to the wall post apocalyptic action cheese. Basically a B-movie with a big budget and made super competently. It's a fun flick if you turn off your brain. Beyond Thunderdome is really 2 movies: a gorgeously shot post apocalyptic "stranger comes to a town and gets involved in its factional drama." Then turns into a weird post apocalyptic Peter Pan analogy and isn't as successful. Honestly the first is safe to skip, Road Warrior is a *classic* (it's far, *far* closer to Fury Road in terms of quality). Beyond Thunderdome is half classic, half mediocre-to-decent but honestly still kinda fun.
4
EricRShelton Mar 24, 2026 +1
This… this is a pretty good take. I’ve never thought about it before, but you’re absolutely right (in my opinion). I know Mad Max was popular, but I could never understand why. The Costner flicks (esp. Postman) feel more grounded/plausible.
1
Ru4pigsizedelephants Mar 24, 2026 +2
It's gotta be the Ulysses Cut of Waterworld, though.
2
dbmajor7 Mar 24, 2026 +1
BFE was bad, but it was watchable with low expectations.
1
ruet_ahead Mar 25, 2026 +1
Don't worry. An OP, like this one, praising the Battlefield Earth isn't ever going to happen.
1
magus-21 Mar 24, 2026 +36
As a movie it's pretty well made and well acted and everything. It's just...not that compelling. Its worst crime IMO is being overly dramatic without necessarily earning it.
36
FairBeginning3 Mar 24, 2026 +13
I liked the Postman, but find Kevin Costner acting overly dramatic.
13
DauntingPrawn Mar 24, 2026 +6
Yes. And Will Patton who sounds like a country boy pretending to be a rich kid trying really hard to speak how he thinks rich people think the poors talk. Giving off hillbilly Kirk Lazarus

One of the prime problems with The Postman is that if you had read the book it was based on first, you were disappointed.

Ambercapuchin Mar 25, 2026 +1
horrified.
1
Alaric4 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I've read the book but not seen the movie. But from descriptions of the plot, it seems to bear about as much resemblance to the book as the original *Running Man* film did to its source material.
1
EatYourCheckers Mar 24, 2026 +5
I also like this movie and don't get the level of hate
5
Feefait Mar 24, 2026 +10
It's better than advertised, but it's not a masterpiece. It's a decent recommendation, but not one that I think anyone "needs" to see. If you like post-apocalyptic or even western-style movies it's worth a watch.
10
cahser11 Mar 25, 2026 +3
I liked it as well. I also liked waterworld.
3
Mindless-Concept8010 Mar 24, 2026 +8
When the Postman was made, it was UNTHINKABLE that that storyline could come to pass. Now that it has, the story gained more relevance.
8
norfolkjim Mar 25, 2026 +3
How did he put it? "I was at the Battle of Georgetown. I saw The White House burn. Don't sell me on The Restored United States of America!" He was such a vile villain
3
DryTown Mar 24, 2026 +3
I agree that this movie and Waterworld both got a lot of hate when they came out. Neither are terrible. I think the shade was over their budgets, which were both over $100M which at the time was insane. Now it seems like most movies are over $100M but at the time there was this vibe of “WTF is Kevin Costner doing?”
3
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +2
Budget for The Postman was 80M in '97 dollars, which today would be $163M.
2
AlternativeHour1337 Mar 24, 2026 +1
thats still alot but even obscure shows like andor get an 800 million budget these days
1
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +3
Calling Andor an "obscure show" is hilarious.
3
AlternativeHour1337 Mar 24, 2026 +1
you think so? i absolutely love it and its in my top 3 favorite shows of all time but i havent met a single person IRL who watched it, or even knows about it really
1
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +2
It was an incredible show but c'mon, it was a Star Wars/Disney show that got a lot of hype and recognition.
2
AlternativeHour1337 Mar 24, 2026
i'd genuinely say that more people watched waterworld than andor
0
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +1
I mean Waterworld has been around for decades.
1
AlternativeHour1337 Mar 24, 2026
but it was in an analog time, these days everyone is streaming shows and things are advertized - thats not easily comparable - and andor HAS been around during covid, the time when basically everyone on the planet was at home and watching shows on the internet
0
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +1
Nah it really isn't a good comparison.
1
Digitalon Mar 24, 2026 +3
I watched it ages ago when I was younger and I recall being totally sold on the post-apocalypse setting. I think this movie came out before Fallout released as I remember thinking it was very unique. I've been wanting to find a copy of it for my movie collection but since it didn't do well financially there aren't many copies available or much demand for it.
3
Heavy_Mikado Mar 24, 2026 +3
Will Patton is one of my favorite actors because of this movie.
3
dantoris Mar 25, 2026 +3
I've been a fan of this movie since it first came out. Was one of my movie obsessions in college that I watched over and over on DVD.
3
Spyd3rs Mar 25, 2026 +3
I always liked it. It was one of my favorite movies as a kid when I first saw it. I never understood why it was hated, granted I haven't seen it in well over a decade.
3
joevirgo Mar 25, 2026 +3
the movie's plot, i felt was very sub-par to the actual book by David Brin, BUT the costume details, the settings, the actors playing survivors or the generation born in the aftermath were all so good! The children/young adults willing to sacrifice themselves to a greater ideal, Daniel von Bargen as the Sheriff that is hardened against outsiders to protect his people, wanting to have hope and showing his need to believe and his incredulity when he receives a letter from his sister. This movie totally gave me the black and white war movie vibes of the 50s and i still watch it at least a couple times a year. I also like to think Tom Petty would totally be a survivor, as well!
3
norfolkjim Mar 25, 2026 +3
"You don't believe in anything." "I believe. In. The United States of America." And Ford. "Live. And let live."
3
Jebus-Xmas Mar 25, 2026 +3
The Postman is a great book, and a great movie, but the two are only vaguely related.
3
grounderssource Mar 25, 2026 +3
Totally agree The Postman is definitely underrated. It has a really powerful post-apocalyptic story about hope, rebuilding society, and how one small idea can inspire people again.
3
zzbear03 Mar 24, 2026 +5
I will normally watch a Kevin Costner movies…Wyatt Earp, dances with wolves, water world, postman, that serial killer one where he kidnaps that kid, untouchables, no way out…I love them all lol
5
Sad-Original-6258 Mar 24, 2026 +7
A Perfect World? I remember really liking that.
7
phobosmarsdeimos Mar 24, 2026 +1
They never say why he was in prison but I don't think he's a serial killer.
1
Aggravating_Bass9126 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Yes, they do. He stole a car for a joy ride, was supposed to get slap on a wrist. But Clint bribed the judge with a stake (dinner) and he was sent in some tough penitentiary where he basically became a real criminal. Clint did it with intention to "save him". More or less, he grew up in a brothel where his moder "worked" (thanks to his deadbeat dad), and as a child shot a guy who went rough on his mom. Police turned a blind eye - he was a kid, - guy was trouble. His mom hang herself....

Thank you! I feel like I was the only one who enjoyed the movie and hated the book.
1
Aggravating_Bass9126 Mar 25, 2026 +1
No, You're not. One of his finest roles. Ok. he was lucky with his costar kid, and Klint as a director.
1
stray1ight Mar 24, 2026 +2
If you liked the movie, you'll probably LOVE the book. Way more depth. Even cooler plot and characters/ development, and overall cool shit going on all throughout 🤘🏼
2
Purplecloud31 Mar 24, 2026 +2
I never listen to what other people think of movies. Mostly high appraised movies are 😩 and underrated movies often are masterpieces. I LOVE the postman and love Kevin Costner. I do feel he is famous but often highly underrated (especially before Yellowstone).
2
emryldmyst Mar 24, 2026 +2
It was a great movie
2
TJ_Fox Mar 24, 2026 +2
I thought it was better than its reputation allows but still suffered in comparison with the book, particularly the neoHippy characters and the augment concept. The climactic fight between the Holnist general and Powhatan should have been epic, almost godlike, but in the movie it was just kind of a wrestling match.
2
availablelol Mar 24, 2026 +2
I liked it. I also liked Waterworld.
2
SurlyJason Mar 25, 2026 +2
The novel was by one of my favorite authors, David Brin. It's his only adapted novel. We could use a movie of *Kiln People* or a series of *The Uplift Saga.* That said, *The Postman* was a shortened, simplified, but overall decent adaptation of the book.
2
ruler_gurl Mar 25, 2026 +2
I enjoyed the way it portrayed the postal service as a unifying social force, not just a delivery service. It makes me sad to watch it today with the way things are going. The future of the post office is not looking great.
2
No_Medicine5660 Mar 25, 2026 +2
I like this movie. Waterworld too.
2
memurraies Mar 25, 2026 +2
Talked a lot about this movie in college. Got a buddy to watch it with me one spring break. He hated it, dragged me to the bar where we, no shit, drank with three mail carriers. Like absolutely trashed. Couple cops stop us as we're drunkenly staggering home. Tell us they're driving us to my place, put us in different cars. Two blocks from my apartment the cop turns our car around and says "we gotta go back, your buddy just pissed on my partner." Just to say, it's not everyone's idea of a good time, but it is my idea of a good time. Ford Lincoln Mercury, Tom Petty, that line I can never quite remember from the final fight where Will Patton and Kevin Costner address each other by they're pre-appcolypse professions? The Newly Reformed United States Government Operating Out Of The Hubert Humphrey Metrodome in Minneapolis (always said like it would be written out as such)!? The weird looks the postman shares with the Vietnam vet? Perfection
2
boardgamejoe Mar 25, 2026 +2
I love the Postman. I thought General Bethlehem was a fantastic villain. The idea that he was a mere copy machine salesman is so interesting.
2
SithLordRising Mar 25, 2026 +2
I think it was a tail end of apocalypse movies especially by Costner and people wanted something new. It is a great movie
2
Oerthling Mar 24, 2026 +4
Online hate brigades are shit, not the movies they talk about.
4
SpaceJackRabbit Mar 24, 2026 +2
As someone who remembers when this movie came out, I can assure you the hate was real already at the time, long before online brigading was a thing.
2
Mission-Macaroon-851 Mar 25, 2026 +2
Yeah, no that was a bad movie at the time and it’s still a bad movie. It’s just that people’s levels have dropped since all those streaming c***. Definitely a bad movie. I worked on the marketing of that movie and my favorite note was OK. Don’t show horses. Don’t show mud. Don’t show guns. Don’t show in that list went on and on and on terrible movie gave me a stomachache.
2
SilveradoTsunami Mar 24, 2026 +1
I remember loving it as a kid, but I also loved Super Marios Bros. So there's that. Haven't watched Postman as an adult, probably should

1
Adept_Havelock Mar 24, 2026 +1
Powhatan never appeared in the movie, IIRC.
1
young_coastie Mar 24, 2026 +1
It was filmed in the town I grew up in and some of my friends were horse riding extras. It was the biggest thing that happened there up to that point. And I’ve never seen it.
1
Obsidian_409 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Any call outs to the soundtrack? I listened to that album a lot back in the day. One of my fist cds
1
readerf52 Mar 24, 2026 +1
I absolutely loved the book. Probably one of my favorite books by David Brin. I hardly recognized the source material in Costner’s movie. I suppose that’s the usual complaint: the book was better. I knew it would be different, but it was so different, it felt disingenuous to slap the title “The Postman” on it.
1
Skinnee11 Mar 24, 2026 +1
Love the overwhelmingly sappy song “Almost Home” by Jono Manson. Pretty good soundtrack overall too.
1
DaarthSpawn Mar 25, 2026 +1
Better book. Much better book.
1
SpeedRacerWasMyBro Mar 25, 2026 +1
The Postman was supposed to be based on the excellent novel by David Brin. They are not similar in any way but the title.
1
piirtoeri Mar 25, 2026 +1
I think everyone hates this because it was hot on the heels of Waterworld which was also panned.
1
Filmscore_Soze Mar 25, 2026 +1
People were hating on Kevin a lot back then. Between this and Waterworld, his leading man days were numbered. Eventually he became a killer supporting actor. Then Yellowstone basically made him a lead again, and now I don't know what he's up to. More mediocre movies like The Postman? :) Both of those movies were better when they were The Road Warrior. ;)
1
dpeterk Mar 25, 2026 +1
Not a masterpiece but thought provoking and entertaining to me.
1
Thannhausen Mar 25, 2026 +1
Very different from the novel, but still quite enjoyable. The epilogue, 30 years later, though was a bit nonsensical.
1

I’ve always been a fan of this flick. I saw it in the theatre in 97.
1

Wow which theatre and where
1
jdixon76 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Loved it since I saw it in the theater. For some reason it was cool to hate.
1
Maleficent_Fold6765 Mar 25, 2026 +1
Ive had the Warner Bros release sitting in my library for years. I guess Im gonna have to watch it now. But Im watching The Warriors 4k Arrow release first and theres nothing you can do to stop me, pal.
1
IHaveSpecialEyes Mar 25, 2026 +1
I don't HATE it, but it definitely comes off as a vanity project for Costner. Particularly the scene where they send him a woman to breed because they think his genes are good.
1
Worldly_Science239 Mar 25, 2026 +1
I have a sneaking suspicion that there's a great 100 minute film inside the average 200 minute film I think it's the over saccharine parts where the people are looking on as the hero rides into the sunset - it tries too hard to beat people over the head with the obvious messaging when it could have just been implied in a much shorter film. I read the David Brin book when it first came out and thought well, it's ok at best... never could believe they made a film of it. but they did! A lot of the faults are also in the book
1
Shington501 Mar 25, 2026 +1
It’s not a bad movie at all, think people lump it together with waterworld, which was a pretty easy target at the time. Also the kid Ford Lincoln Mercury was silly
1
thisisredlitre Mar 25, 2026 +1
I like to think Kevin's character in Waterworld is a descendant of The Postman
1
AndrewSS02 Mar 25, 2026 +1
My favorite part is that it's almost coming soon to real life 🤣
1
CnlJohnMatrix Mar 24, 2026 +1
lol at masterpiece … Anyways the movie was a bit heavy and took itself more serious than it should have. That was a direct reflection on Costner - as the movie was, IMO, an expression of Costner’s ego. But it was a decent watch with some memorable scenes and characters.
1
TripleSingleHOF Mar 24, 2026 +1
It's not as bad as it was made out to be, but calling it a "masterpiece" is a bit of a stretch.
1
CO_74 Mar 24, 2026 +1
That’s what a bad movie was in 1997. Just a week after this came out, Titanic was released. That same year it came out, Oscar nominated (and winning) movies included not only Titanic, but Good Will Hunting, LA Confidential, The Apostle (personal favorite), Jackie Brown, As Good As It Gets, Amistad, The Full Monty - it just goes on and on. The Postman doesn’t hold a candle to any of those. It’s not a terrible movie, but it came out in one of the best cinematic eras ever, and it just wasn’t nearly as good. It’s like telling everyone your mom’s cooking is great and wondering why she doesn’t win a Michelin star.
1
DripRoast Mar 24, 2026
I thought it was generally fine, but the thing with these epic long-assed movies is that they need to be exceptional to be watchable for most people. Costner is a serial offender on the mediocre epic charge. Just good isn't good enough once the runtime passes a certain mark.
0
Aggravating_Bass9126 Mar 25, 2026 +1
This one was directed by Klint Eastwood himself - so I don't get how KC could decide about, as you say, epic long a..ed movie
1
Naturalnumbers Mar 24, 2026 +1
Probably the most boring movie I've ever seen.
1
codykonior Mar 24, 2026
Yep. But I like the first 2/3 more. Suddenly the last 1/3 the movie just ends the way it does and it feels really anti climactic.
0
Calraider7 Mar 25, 2026
ITS a GREAT MOVIE IF you cut out everything from the time they go up on the mountain will the time they come down, try it on DVD
0
Wintermute2013 Mar 25, 2026
There is a scene in that movie that is audaciously Kevin Costner where it’s a solo shot of him standing in front of christmas lights staring into the camera that is so self-glorifying that it’s hilarious and turns the movie into a comedy for me.
