"The Prince of Egypt" (1998 | Brenda Chapman, Steve Hickner & Simon Wells) - The plagues of Egypt are unleashed upon Ramses (Ralph Fiennes) by Moses (Val Kilmer)
TIL how stacked that cast was. Val Kilmer, Ralph Fiennes, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sandra Bullock, Jeff Goldblum, Danny Glover, Patrick Stewart, Helen Mirren, Steve Martin, and Martin Short. What?!

Jeffrey Katzenberg basically started the trend of using big name stars in animated movies on to sell the films.
After the success of Robin Williams in Aladdin (where he screwed Robin over by making his playing Genie the bulk of the ad campaign after agreeing NOT to)

For every good idea he had, it was usually outweighed by the a****** things he did.
And then of course the bad ideas he had were the stuff of legend. Releasing Quibi just before Covid (costing him Dreamworks as it got gobbled up by Comcast). Thinking "Pocahontas" would win Best Picture and THE LION KING would be a flop.

My husband, tragically, will not watch this movie simply because of its Christian overtones.
I told him, as a non-religious myself, the core of the film is not pushing Christian propaganda. It's really about class struggle and freedom of religion: finding hope to fight against and condemning the powerful and oppressive elites and authoritarianism, and also about being true to yourself and finding your people who love you for you.
Maybe one day I'll break through. Because The Prince of Egypt is absolutely a masterpiece.

1
POWBOOMBANGApr 1, 2026

I mean, they wouldn't have Christianity in mind.

You don't follows the 613 commandments, you do not follow the laws of moses, the laws dont even apply to christians because they aren't jewish.
1
-reddit_is_terrible-Apr 1, 2026
+1
You're more or less right about that, although it gets pretty complicated. But I was more referring to Moses not being significant in Christian theology. Both he *and* the law are very significant. Large chunks of the New Testament explain what the purpose of the law was and how Christians relate, even though it has been fulfilled and is no longer binding. The book of Hebrews for instance. Not to mention the entire Exodus story being massively important for the Christian understanding of redemption
1
PhilosophyIsAPathApr 1, 2026
+1
I get hes significant as he builds up to it but hardly anyone in christianity points to the jewish prophets as figures of authority. Jesus is the ultimate authority on god in christianity and the messiah basically making all previous teachings null and void for them. They are significant in a historical and lineage sense sure but no one in christianity after christ is able to invoke the law of moses, moses is no longer the highest authority like he is in judaism, and christians don't celebrate jewish holidays. I get what youre saying but this is a jewish story thats significant for christianity but is by no means a christian story.
1
-reddit_is_terrible-Apr 1, 2026
+1
Yes......and not being an authority is different than not being significant. A massive part of Christian theology is understanding how Jesus fulfills the Old Testament, including the Law of Moses. Moses is just as significant to Christianity as the creation account.
1
POWBOOMBANGApr 1, 2026
+1
Moses is incredibly significant in Christian theology.
The entire Old Testement is basically the story of Israel and the bloodline of Christ. The Old Testement is literally the old covenant between the people of God and God, which was handed to Moses on the mountain.
The New Testement is the new covenant with God brought in by the sacrifice of Christ.
It's all tied together.
1
PhilosophyIsAPathApr 1, 2026
+1
I am confirmed catholic and have read the bible about a dozen times, I can assure you, moses is not significant in christianity. The new covenant literally exempts them from moses covenant, they follow none of his laws besides the 1st 10 of 613 and commandments.
1
POWBOOMBANGApr 1, 2026
+1
This is actually a very contentious part of the Jesus story. He was viewed as sacrilegious for saying "I give you a new commandment" when asked what commandment was the greatest.
Just because the new covenant usurped the old doesn't mean Moses wasn't significant in Christian beliefs.
You wouldn't have Christ without the deliverance of Israel. That is pretty significant
I'm not even a f****** believer anymore so this is weird to recall all of this in a debate
1
PhilosophyIsAPathApr 1, 2026
+1
and we wouldnt have dogs without wolves but that doesnt mean every wolf I see is really a dog. This is a Jewish story thats relevant and significant to the establishment of christ as the messiah, they do not follow moses or his laws its not a hard concept.
1
POWBOOMBANGApr 1, 2026
+1
Christ came as a "fulfillment of the law" meaning the law of Moses.
So yes, Christians don't follow the law of Moses today.
But that doesnt mean Moses isn't a significant figure in Christianity.
Wander into pretty much any Christian church in America this Sunday and you will hear Moses being included in the Easter message.
1
theoxfordtailorApr 1, 2026

Is there really anything in it that's specifically Christian though? It's a story from the Torah and I don't believe Jesus is mentioned at all. I'm pretty sure even the Muslim faith believes in the story of Moses as presented in The Prince of Egypt with only a few differences.
If you're not a believer in Abrahamic traditions, it's a perfectly fine movie if you look at as a myth, a fable, or just a retelling of a legend from antiquity.

This was quite the exception, but majority of US animated films, and TV shows for that matter only get greenlit if theres some sort of merchandise agreement tied in. Gotta sell them toys.
Though, I think the perfect example of what you described would be The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Had people thinking this was a film about a weird looking guy that goes to a block party and meets a pretty girl with a goat. Little did they know it was actually about sexual repression and genocide.
Also with a fire soundtrack and lyrics by Schwartz.

Reading this part in the Bible is part of what caused me to start questioning Christianity as a kid. I remember it saying that God himself hardened the Pharaoh's heart against setting the slaves free during the plagues - only to turn around and unleash devastation on innocent people, eventually killing all the firstborn. I couldn't imagine a loving God doing that.
1
ChaseBank5Apr 1, 2026
+1
I still dont fully understand that either. It does say "and God hardened Pharaohs heart"
So he's sending Moses to convince the Pharaoh that slavery is bad, but then also is hardening the Pharoahs heart at the same time?
Super weird, seems like a mis-translation or something.
1
Forte845Apr 1, 2026
+1
It's not a mistranslation. The god of the Old testament was vengeful and jealous, and is where the term "god-fearing" came from.
Much like how the ancient Greeks believed the vengeance of Poseidon would cause great storms, ships to sink, villages to wash away into the sea, yet they worshipped him, making offerings and sacrifices in the hopes they would avoid catastrophe themselves.
1
FunkycoldmediciApr 1, 2026
+1
It helps with context. Yahweh was originally a polytheistic war/storm god. His primary interest is being worshipped above other gods, and punishing anyone who doesn’t worship him enough. He altered Pharaoh’s free will because he does not respect free will and likes hurting people. He forces Pharaoh to act against his demands, then kills people as punishment for what he made Pharaoh do. This is not out of character, as he commits and commands genocide on multiple occasions, and promises one last genocide though/as Jesus in the gospels.

Much of the “Old Testament” isn’t really translated very well from Biblical Hebrew

1
ChaseBank5Apr 1, 2026
+1
I see. Yeah ive always kind of assumed there are plenty of poor translations.
Wonder what this one specifically was supposed to say. Cause it sure wasn't "and God softened Pharoahs heart"
Cause the Pharoah fought tooth and nail to keep the Hebrews slaves. Even after agreeing to let them go he said nah f*** that Im getting them back.
1
SnowCold93Apr 1, 2026
+1
The Torah isn’t meant to be read without also being interpreted. There’s different interpretations and commentators that people study when they study the Torah. Some say that the phrase means God hardened his heart in the sense that he made pharaoh tougher so that he would survive each of the plagues and face the consequences of his actions. Another interpretation is that it’s saying that to showcase the extend of God’s power over everything - but Pharaoh hardened his own heart and God knew he would but was still giving him the chance to change.
It’s a bit hard to explain the different interpretations if you don’t know any Hebrew but that’s the gist of some of the more common interpretations. But in none is it saying that God wanted Pharaoh to not let the Hebrews go.

So what I remember from my parents, Sunday school and a Christian school education is that the life and death of Jesus was the beginning of the new convenant, replacing the old convenant set in place by Moses in receiving the 10 commandments. Old testament God is the only turning people into pillars of salt, ruining a dude's life for a bet and destroying cities for a lack of hospitality. New testament God says "My kid is the ultimate sacrifice, you can stop killing your primary source of protein to appease me". But Malachi 3:6 says "I the Lord do not change", so who knows what we're actually supposed to get out of it all.

So, you're saying that humans killing Jesus made god... softer because "yup, that's gooood sacrifice, guys", but at the same time, he (god) didn't change, somehow ? Religion is fun.

Pretty much. It really comes down to the denomination because the Baptists and fringe groups that skew more socially conservative say they stand by the new covenant, but cite old testament verses to justify hateful behavior because I the Lord do not change. Methodists and adjacent tend to handwave away the more hateful sounding parts by bringing up the new covenant and changing the subject. From what I can tell the official position of denominations like Lutheran and Episcopal is slightly more socially conservative than your average non-religious person but their theology seems to give you room for open minded opinions to co-exist with official church stances.

He’s the same god in the New Testament. Remember that the New Testament centers on Jesus promising to return and end the world, judge everyone on their faith, kill all the unbelievers with fire, and reward his faithful with eternal life in his new kingdom. Sure, it’s all love and hugs for fellow disciples, but it’s death in fire for everyone else.

The Ancient Hebrews were frequent users of hyperbole and wanted to stress how much control their God had control over everything, moreso than the other pagan gods. This meant sometimes saying that God did something, even if the decision was ultimately up to the individual in question. Make no mistake that Pharaoh hardened his own heart.

It’s still killing innocent people to punish the person actually doing wrong.

Yeah, if you think about it, it's basically God torturing innocent people to convince some random king to do something. If he can do all that, maybe just kill the pharaoh? Instead of thousands of innocent children? Just so stupid

That’s because you read it in probably English and from a Christian perspective. When I studied it at my Midrasha (a Jewish religious school for adults) that was not the interpretation at all

The way I understood it was that God simply allowed Pharaoh to harden his own heart. The only thing worse than God's wrath is His indifference.

I'm not even a religious person but this movie goes so hard. I stumbled on this cover of [Deliver Us](https://youtu.be/YD8mZmGSDNc?si=lLN1-oXsstF4VOuw) a few years ago and it lives rent free in my head (music video is a little corny but the audio is fantastic)

Such a great movie. Rest in Peace to the great talent Ofra Haza who sang part of the opening. Such an angelic voice she had.

Something that I never caught until recently was that the Plagues were a mockery of the Egyptian gods, and the order in which Yahweh mocks them is deliberate. First, He turns the Nile, the ultimate symbol of life and fertility in Egypt, into blood; a not-so-subtle hint at what's to come. Then, He insults the frog-headed fertility goddess Heket by using her likeness to foul up the land. Lice, gnats, and flies are meant for the earth god Geb as well as Khepri, the scarab-headed god of rebirth. Wiping out the cattle is a huge middle finger to the sacred Apis bull, and the boils make Isis and Sekhmet, goddesses of healing and disease respectively, look impotent.
Moving on from the land, God then dunks on Nut (sky) and Set (storms) when He calls down fire and hail from the heavens. Set actually gets it twice because he was also seen as responsible for protecting the crops, so it's extra nasty when the swarm of locusts wipes out whatever the previous Plagues didn't destroy. Ra, the Father, God of the Sun, gets sonned by three days of all-consuming darkness. Yahweh has basically ripped the entire pantheon to shreds, but the coup de grâce he saves for Pharaoh, the man who dared call himself a living god.

I grew up in a very christian household. As I got older, I got smarter and really kept away from it. Nothing against people who are believers but the majority and what I went through really keep me away.
That being said, you don't have to be religious to understand how masterful a film like Prince Of Egypt is. Incredible storytelling, fantastic performances, gorgeous animation and the music just gives me goosebumps. I love this movie so much and always will

Fun fact with it being the first night of Passover. There is 0 archeological proof that the Jews were ever slaves in Egypt.
As someone who is Jewish and worked a physically taxing job (chef). I always took pride in the fact that “my people have a long history of hard labor, look at the pyramids, we’re not all doctors and lawyers”
Then I did some research, and there is no evidence that a large group of people matching the Children of Jacob ever lived in a land called Goshen. Additionally, the pyramids were built long before a supposed Jewish would have been there. Needless to say I was pretty bummed out.
Happy Passover!

My favorite part is when God came down and murdered thousands of newborn babies and innocent children because that's what God does cuz God loves everyone so much. And that everyone celebrates that every year where they get together with family and celebrate the slaughter of innocent babies

It's a travesty that big budget American 2D theatrical animated movies on this scale got killed off by Shrek and Toy Story leading to the rise of CG animation. Sure, we still got Anime movies and some French animated movies here and there that keep 2D animation alive, but we lost a good chunk of 20+ years starving of mainstream 2D animated movies with this level of animation and story. Netflix Klaus was supposed to open up a new renaissance for Western 2D animated movies but alas it never came.

The movie doesn’t really depict it the same way as it’s meant to be interpreted. The frogs were so numerous that they were in every single surface, every single crevice, and all over peoples bodies. You couldn’t escape them. And then the sound from their croaking would keep people awake because it would be so loud so you’d be suffering from sleep deprivation.
