Everyone's bad at phishing tests, and trainings [tend not to help](https://today.ucsd.edu/story/cybersecurity-training-programs-dont-prevent-employees-from-falling-for-phishing-scams).
People are just going to click on links. I work in security and would absolutely fall for a well-targeted phishing attempt if you caught me at the right time. Corporate security should be designed around this fact and should focus on reducing the worst-case impact if a malicious link is clicked or attachment downloaded, rather than trying to fight human nature.

On one hand, I want to be like “These are state-level actors. They absolutely could own even the machines of the well-prepared and cautious.” On the other hand, why would someone who absolutely should how much data gets hoovered daily by everyone on the planet keep so much personal c*** web-facing? Also, I have no doubt Patel’s the sort of guy who turns off MFA, reuses the same password he had in high school, and answers the security questions honestly with info someone could get from his Wikipedia page.
80
stringrandomMar 27, 2026
+20
Most hacking at any level starts with social engineering. It's far, far easier to gain access to a system with a set of valid credentials willingly given to you than to have to brute force a password.
Patel either got phished or, just as likely, uses the same/similar username and password on other sites and one of those got compromised.
20
Competitive_Touch_86Mar 27, 2026

Local exploit on his machine and then credential stuffing is pretty likely as well. But who knows.
Google security is scarily good at sussing out someone logging in who is not you, even with valid credentials and using a localized VPN from the area you usually come from. It's defeatable, but it's not quite as easy as having a valid login and password.

You think these are the most damning things in the FBI director's email? This is them showing that they have the cards.
Every single one of you is taking the bait on every single one of these posts and missing the point. The compromised, Trump supporting, law violating FBI director just had his personal email hacked, something he never thought would ever be seen by another human being.
He's about to be more compromised than Trump himself. Every single piece of embarrassing info, illegal orders, Patel PP tapes... Iran has them now.

I'm not trying to be a d*** here, but I also think you're missing a crucial, big picture point here: The Trump regime has no issue ignoring something like this. Kash Patel is "compromised"... So what? The regime has time and again, ignored issues like this, with Donald Trump himself being the most compromised official in his regime.
Nothing happens unless some truly fucked up, illegal shit is released.

Cyber hackers linked to Iran have begun leaking photos purportedly taken from the personal email account of Kash Patel, the director of the FBI.
The group, calling itself the Handala Hack Team, posted a number of photographs and private correspondence that appeared to be related to the breach on its website, mocking the FBI’s security as “nothing more than a joke.”
A US Justice Department official confirmed that Patel’s email had been breached and said the material published online appeared authentic.

The FBI did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The incident raised serious concerns about cybersecurity at the highest levels of US law enforcement.

Handala posted a statement on the encrypted messaging app Telegram, reading: “This is the security that the US government boasts about?! This is the cyber giant that thinks threats and bribes can silence the voice of resistance?! To the whole world, we declare: the FBI is just a name, and behind this name, there is no real security.”

The organisation warned “this is just our beginning”.
Handala, which calls itself a group of pro-Palestinian vigilante hackers, is considered by western researchers to be one of several personas used by Iranian government cyberintelligence units.
Handala recently claimed responsibility for the hack of Michigan-based medical devices and services provider Stryker on March 11, claiming to have deleted a massive trove of company data.

The Times was not able to independently authenticate the Patel emails, but the personal Gmail address that Handala claims to have broken into matches the address linked to Patel in previous data breaches preserved by the dark web intelligence firm District 4 Labs.
A sample of the material uploaded by the hackers appears to show a mix of personal and work correspondence dating between 2010 and 2019, a copy of his CV, and private photographs taken years before he was appointed by President Trump to lead the bureau.
One photograph appears to show Patel sniffing a cigar, another shows him posing next to a jet.
Patel has faced criticism during his tenure as director. Concerns have been raised about his use of a government-funded jet for personal travel, including a trip to Italy and a trip to watch his girlfriend perform at a wrestling event. He also faced criticism for partying with the US men’s hockey team after they won the gold medal at the Winter Olympics

I feel like if you’re directing one of the highest security agencies aside from the CIA and the NSA and get your personal information leaked, you should be terminated, like it’s simply bad practice from the top down if the highest member isn’t following the rules

Yeah this shows that they are capable of hacking his private photos. Revealing any bad ones could instantly get him sacked, but warning him like this could affect his decision making. A compromised leader is often more dangerous than a disgraced one.

Good thing Patel only serves to protect criminals and not Americans, or else this hack would be quite concerning.
