Each season they should introduce a new rookie older than the last rookie. I'd watch that

“Listen up people, here’s our latest Rookie. He’s moved from New York but feels he still has a lot to offer our Department. You might know his name from his work on the Son of Sam case.”

"Who was your training officer?" "Wyatt Earp."

The Rookie is one of those easy to watch fun shows. It’s never going to win anyone in it a major award but it’s still fun to watch. Some of the stories are insane. Some are super realistic. Some are just silly. What I love about it is it’s a show that has been on every single year since it started and for the most part is a 20+ episode season show. The only seasons not 20+ episodes were from the pandemic and the strike recently.

I love Nathan Fillion and don't mind a brainless serial but this show just rubs me the wrong way. All of the psychic/astrology mumbojumbo, the random morally gray defense lawyer that overnight becomes a major criminal mastermind working for the worst people in the world, the over the top caricatures of people like Randy, and the constant need to bring back mediocre characters (both bad and good guys).

iamacannibal Mar 23, 2026 +1
> All of the psychic/astrology mumbojumbo There is one character who is into this stuff. Morally gray defense lawyer who becomes a criminal mastermind? Monica Stevens is the character you're talking about. She was never morally gray. She was introduced as a defense lawyer and then revealed later on to be involved in criminal shit. it wasn't some morally gray thing. She was doing crime stuff on the side and using her career as a defense lawyer to help her and other criminals.

Monica starts off as a normal defense attorney working for Elijah Stone. She is then pushed towards doing some illegal/shady stuff for him which is understandable development. There is then a massive leap from shady lawyer to her being the attorney to every major multi-national criminal enterprise in the blink of an eye.

So few shows get to 6+ seasons present day it must be doing something right.

I watched like... 1 season of it. Couldn't take it anymore. I've seen a few scenes from future seasons because they pop up on Youtube. It's a complete 'turn your brain off and don't question it' show. They have Patrol Cops going Undercover to Mexico to expose Cartel members. It's complete nonsense and even if you put up with having a shooting every episode, the cop part of the show is just... bad. They represent LAPD and California laws very poorly. At one point a character breaks up with another ( of an equal rank ) because she's worried it might affect her reputation/career and then ends up in a relationship with her former Training Officer, as if that isn't 100 times worse. If anyone wants to see a real cop/LAPD show, watch Southland instead.

Chen breaking up with Nolan had a lot more to do with fans not really liking that story line and they needed an easy reason to end it. The show is absurd though…but I still love it.

prazulsaltaret Mar 23, 2026 +2
It happened almost immediately, in episode 4. The episode was filmed long before the Pilot even aired surely

iamacannibal Mar 23, 2026
Maybe but they could have still been filming or editing the first batch of episodes. It also could have been something people who got to see it early didn’t like. The test screenings of the pilot. But also it could have been planned. I don’t know

> Chen breaking up with Nolan had a lot more to do with fans not really liking that story line and they needed an easy reason to end it. The breaking up was pure planning in the will they won't they relationship journey. The never going to revisit that well was because of lack of fan reaction to the relationship.

Aren’t procedurals and soaps usually the exception? Those things run forever.

How is it propaganda for the police?
3
iamacannibal Mar 23, 2026 +2
People think any show that doesnt show cops as 100% evil 100% of the time is "copaganda"
2
heliostraveler Mar 22, 2026 -49
American loves cop drama. Dunno why. They white wash that whole profession into sow thing it’s never been.

Media-consumer101 Mar 22, 2026 +68
At least this show is so incredibly unrealstic that anyone with half a working brain cell realizes it is nothing like the real cops

diggie_diggie_diggie Mar 22, 2026 +55
So you mean to tell me that rookie cops don’t do black ops missions to third world countries in order to kill cartel leaders?

dumbass_sempervirens Mar 22, 2026 +7
I saw that episode. They also got back in time to meet up with the B-plot characters before shift change.
7
Sloppykrab Mar 22, 2026 +4
If you treat a fictional in the same realm of what's possible in reality, you're gonna have a bad time.
4
dumbass_sempervirens Mar 22, 2026 +1
I agree. But they went from LA to Colombia, took out a cartel, and back home in 8 hours. Guess they hopped on a SR-71 for those flight times.

I've seen clips of this on YouTube and from none of them would I guess this show gets this outlandish

They're definitely on a fast n furious track, they'll be in space eventually.

That 911 show already hit that point lol
11
pasher5620 Mar 22, 2026 +10
Oh, they did that in season 5 or 6. This newest season was advertised about being all about the LAPD teaming up with the FBI to go on some international spy campaign to capture some big time criminals. I think they went to Italy. Oh, also there were rage zombies at one point (think 28 days later) and Lucy was forced to kill one of them and the show took it super seriously as she had never killed anyone before. It truly is a ridiculous and crazy show and is the most entertaining copaganda since Brooklyn 99.
10
iamacannibal Mar 23, 2026 +1
> the show took it super seriously as she had never killed anyone before. She has shot like 30 people on the show since they seem to get into shoot outs every other episode but none of them have died, which to me is hilarious.
1
pasher5620 Mar 23, 2026 +1
Oh yeah, the amount of times they should have pretty brazenly killed someone by shooting them is frankly absurd, yet them somehow always shoot the nonvital parts of the shoulders or legs.

Nu11u5 Mar 22, 2026 +2
The first two seasons are more down to earth. It goes a bit off the rails after that.

violue Mar 22, 2026 +14
Shows like this are easy watching. Fun, often satisfying. A show with police standing in a hallway while children are slaughtered with automatic gunfire isn't going to get as many viewers. It's hard to have fun, likable characters that shoot an unarmed person while breaking into the wrong house for a drug warrant. Even the shows with a darker tone usually catch the (correct) bad guy in the end. A show focusing on the thousands of unsolved rapes and murders every year would be both unsatisfying and very boring. I look at shows like this as fantasy.

Captain-Wilco Mar 22, 2026 +16
Cop dramas are a really easy way to insert plot lines about social dynamics, kill characters off and introduce new ones, introduce a broad supporting cast, etc. All the while, stuffing the show full of action scenes and not having to answer the question of the protagonists’ motivations (it’s just their job)
16
prazulsaltaret Mar 23, 2026
> All the while, stuffing the show full of action scenes Problem is those are terrible here. The cops engage in shootings in full crossfire of each other/civilians and almost never get into cover.
0
Captain-Wilco Mar 23, 2026 +2
That’s not a concern for the average cop drama viewer haha
2
Digess Mar 22, 2026 +3
If you can’t tell the cop shows on TV are fictional, I kinda question you.
3
Renax127 Mar 22, 2026 +8
Southland did a pretty good job showing cops are shit. Only one cop the whole run wasn't corrupt in some way
8
Jeremisio Mar 22, 2026 +7
Southland did a real good job at straddling the line of making the cops look corrupt yet competent, assholes but also trying to help. Definitely not copaganda but not really cop slander either.
7
prazulsaltaret Mar 23, 2026 +2
> Southland did a pretty good job showing cops are shit. Only one cop the whole run wasn't corrupt in some way Southland is the GOAT.
2
Phantom-Finger Mar 23, 2026 +2
> They white wash that whole profession into sow thing it’s never been. Half the main cast are black/hispanic. The show has plenty to throw shade at, its white-washing is not one of them.
2
heliostraveler Mar 23, 2026 +1
You’re confusing what I’m meaning. When I say white wash for this, I mean turning them into these utopian level good cops.
1
Nu11u5 Mar 22, 2026 +1
Every once in a while they manage to pay lip service to issues of social justice, ethical policing, and police reform - which is more than you can say about actual police forces.

God I f****** HATE this show. And I’ve gone through a good fair share of CBS slop happily. And I love Nathan Fillion. So my tolerance is VERY high. Main characters Fiancé might be the worst actress I have ever seen. Negative chemistry between them AND the weird Lucy Tim pairing.

iamacannibal Mar 23, 2026 +3
You sure got deep into the show for hating it so much.
