I have been watching more television shows lately - those that have been completed and on streaming. I started with FX oldest to newest and started with The Shield. Been a couple years but I wanted to get my review in and seen what people thought. Michael Chiklis and Walton Groggins were fantastic in this series and I have enjoyed everything Groggins has been in. Very good story throughout and I highly enjoyed it even though it was an older show.
Not a better finale in the history of television. And im someone who hates hyperbole.

It completely avoided all expectations. And left it in a way that you can just keep thinking about it. One of the all-time great endings.

Best pilot hook in TV history and best finale. That show is the most underrated form of media ever. It’s a masterpiece that no one talks about

Yea, I don’t know. Vic’s punishment for years of criminal behavior, including murder was to be stuck in a cubicle. His purgatory was my Monday thru Friday and I was a little offended.

It's also having to live with knowing his friends are dead as a result of him. He's stuck to the cubicle with zero prospects for his life and no allies and no family. That's a haunting punishment for him. Best ending of all time IMO

To him it was the worst fate imaginable. He threw away all of his friendships, all of his career, his wife and kids. The one thing he has left is getting to apply his skills at ICE, do the job he loves. Be on the streets.
But then even that is taken from him. He's essentially imprisoned in his mind. Stuck in a cubicle, can't carry a gun, constant drug tests, 10 page reports every day.
Is it truly the worst fate for a person? Of course not. But for him? The guy that saw himself as running LA, that defined himself as a cop? He'd rather be in prison. Hell he might even have been able to keep playing his games in there.

Love the characters and writing but thought it dip downwards towards silly a little after two seasons. It redeemed itself spectacularly in the last.
The Shield and The Wire also wobble a little, but in my memory of watching all three around the same time, not as much. Been meaning to rewatch it to see if that is still a valid opinion.

I think about the "Family Meeting" episode a lot. That was something.

Fun fact about The Shield: episodes were written without any order. An episode would have, say, three plots of:
- Dutch and Claudette investigate a gang member who might have ties to the Strike Team.
- Julian and Danny try to solve a robbery.
- The Strike Team meets with the Armenian gangs about a drug deal.
But unlike most shows they wouldn't write "Dutch does this and then Danny does that" they'd just write the plots to all three and fit them together in the edit.
So if they wanted to, they could just run all of plot A then all of plot B and all of plot C without any intercutting and it would all make sense.

The Shield was ahead of its time. I was glued to the tv every week while it was on.

I do really like the show, as well as SOA, but dear lord, does Kurt Sutter practice plot armor.

That was my biggest issue. I watched like two seasons and then was just like what mouse trap is going to unwind this episode so that X gets away with Y and plot can advance in “the most interesting way possible” Z

Bad writing, boring storylines, uninteresting characters, pure fantasy police work and a lot of bad acting (not all, but a lot). It's just the same as shows like Sons of Anarchy and Peaky Blinders, totally style over substance. It's about tough guys shooting guns, doing crime, having sex and being badass but...sometimes they get *sad.* There are some really great moments littered throughout the show, the season 5 finale and the ending specifically, but I honestly don't think watching the rest of the show for those moments is really worth it.

I think it’s a lot better than you’re giving it credit for. But I do agree it’s very overrated on here.
Although it does have some truly great moments and the ending is one of the best.

This is the right take. There’s a very clear gap between it and the absolute A++ all-timers, I think it may even be tier 3 with like Justified/Americans/Leftovers type stuff in 2 with Sopranos/Wire/Mad Men in 1, but a very vocal contingent swears it’s among the absolute best.
It’s just so uneven, when it cooks it’s as good as any thriller series ever, but it spends a ton of time on episodic case of the week type stuff that’s very hit/miss, and when it misses it just makes you wish you were back with Vic.

You know what man - I’ll jump in and eat some downvotes with you. I don’t 100% agree with your take, but I would agree that The Shield is the #1 most overrated show on Reddit. There are a handful of good episodes, maybe even a couple of great episodes, but the rest of it is mediocre at best. It took me so long to finish because I kept giving up on it, but people kept telling me I had to see it out until the finale. My assessment: it’s fine if you are looking for something to watch, but it’s not a great show. Definitely not on par with the all time greats.
