The difference with new Simpsons writers is they’d take that 30 second joke scene and make it an entire episode *sigh*

Now who's laughing?! Now who's laughing?! - One of my favourite vocal stims for like 30 years

*"You couldn't fool your mother on the foolingest day of your life if you had an electrified fooling machine!"*

That line is begging for some unnecessary censorship

Absolutely amazing. I was hoping to run into this today. This and "I don't wanna alarm you, but there may be a boogeyman or boogeymen in the house!" are top-5 Simpsons gags for me.

It says a lot that this episode is mainly a clip show, and yet the framing device is still absolute comedy gold on its own. Classic Simpsons was truly the best to ever do it.

You can also see why there was such a temptation to 'jump the shark' a bit, in terms of more and more unrealistic gags. It's hilarious. But its also slippery slope. For how amazing something like Sherry Bobbins or the clip episode was for early seasons, it also risks starting you down a (to take a simpsons term) flanderization road. I really like that they found a way to have that kind of fun while isolating and boxing it in with the clip show premise (similar to the freedom of treehouse horror episodes). But it eventually leaked out, and now this could just be put into a regular simpsons episode without issue, rather than its riduculous unrealistic nature being part of the cliip show episode gag. TLDR; I'm old and grumpy and whine about the good old days.

Let me guess, your top Gag is "Nobody ever says Italy", isn't it? ;)

Hank_Scorpio_ObGyn Apr 1, 2026 +4
Top 5! I use that at least once or twice a week with the wife. But #1 is the sugar/cream gag in the same episode.

I'm proceeding on foot. Call in a code 8.

KneeHighMischief Apr 1, 2026 +28
Fox originally wanted four clip shows per season which feels like a wild amount.

crossedstaves Apr 1, 2026 +12
It's hard to overstate just how c**** and bad Fox's programming was in the early days.

ZombieJesus1987 Apr 1, 2026 +3
I used to love clip episodes when I was a kid. I didn't realize people hated them until Listnook.

Salvage570 Apr 1, 2026 +2
they werent so bad before streaming. Like, they sucked sure but in the end it was reruns of the simpsons which wed watch anyway

ewilliam Apr 1, 2026 +3
One of my favorite jabs about their terrible programming is when the fans got Family Guy back on the air, and first thing when they came back, [they did this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pd0O_RvVkHY).

A classic… I watched the whole thing waiting for that “code 8” gag… time well spent…

Golden age Simpsons is probably the wittiest show in history. Almost every line is a joke.
25
Halo_cT Apr 1, 2026 +8
I'd put peak 30 Rock and Arrested Development s1-3 in that conversation but yeah, Simpsons was incredibly consistent for so long.

byfuryattheheart Apr 1, 2026 +3
Totally agree. Only other show that is on the same level is Veep imo. Like you said, pretty much every single line is a joke.

You know it's gonna be a good one when Conan is still listed in the credits.

He's also the creator of the Sea Captain character who features here.

FuzzyBunnysGuide Apr 1, 2026 +10
But according to Lionel Hutz, isn’t it a fact that Captain McAllister is *not* a real captain?

This was in the Conan O'Brien era of The Simpsons, and I'd bet money this came straight from him. It's exactly his kind of "old-timey" humor.

funniest shit i ever saw as a 10 year old i’m 40+ and to this day remember cracking my ass up long ago at the scene where homer opens the beer…

The shaking the beer in the paint mixer is a core memory for me. I watched that when it aired and laughed my ass off for a good 5 minutes

In that clip, Homer shuts the door on the refrigerator at the 1:57 mark, but in the next cut, we can clearly see the door is opened back up again. And then after Homer makes the comment about how he could of looked like the April Fool, the door is closed again on its own. Are we to believe this is some sort of magical refrigerator or something?

Let me ask *you* something. Why would a man whose shirt says "Genius At Work" spend all of his time watching a silly cartoon show?
1
IAmFern Apr 1, 2026 +1
Definitely one of my top five Simpsons episodes.
1
Possible-Ad3864 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I know as a kid I tried to shake a canned fizzy drink long enough to explode when I opened it because of this episode.

Strange that Lisa sings the pagan songs but is the only one not taking part. Maybe a mis-match between voice recording and animation. Gee, I hope someone got fired for that blunder...

Is it bad I've never zeen a single episode of the Simpsons?
-4
FuzzyBunnysGuide Apr 1, 2026 +2
If you have Disney+, it's never too late to start watching! Seasons 2-6 are the best, in my opinion.
2
EntertainmentSea444 Apr 1, 2026
Oh word is it a good bingeworthy show?
0
FuzzyBunnysGuide Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's episodic, not serialized, but if you want to binge the classic episodes, go for it!
1
DangerBay2015 Apr 1, 2026 +1
IMO the episodics are the best of the bingies. Just put it on the background, go about your business, cleaning, cooking, painting Warhammer figures, playing board games, reading whatever, drift in and out. The stuff with the overarching plot I find takes too much backtracking because you missed something. See also: X-Files monster of the week vs X-Files mythology episodes.
