The songs in Robert Carlock/Tina Fey comedies are the best in the business

Posted by mikejones84

I still find myself singing bits of songs from 30 Rock and Kimmy Schmidt when just going about my daily routine. - Werewolf Barmitzvah spooky scary...boys becoming men...men becoming wolves! - And I find myself thinking "now you're laughing at salad" at inappropriate times. The Daddy's Boys songs, all of Jenna's songs, Titus's songs...it's all just genius.

I know its actually a Meredith Scardino show (basically the same) but did you watch Girls5Eva? I sing those songs way too often and too loudly

>No wonder Jesus went to TCU >It's was early decision! F****** kills me every single time. I love that song more than I realized I could. And Summer Brings... the Fall.

automated_alice Mar 31, 2026 +3
The tiny bit at Kev & Summer's where Andrew Rannells sings "powered by truth and batteries" gets stuck in my head waaaay too much.

I return to Dawn's "I'm Afraid" more times than I care to admit. That show was excellent.

yes, that song is on my playlists

Jeff Richmond is a genius! My favorite by far is “New York Lonely Boy.”[https://youtu.be/Ptdjmm5nrH4] It is one of those rare examples of a parody that hits so close to home that it is barely distinguishable from the source material it is parodying.

ProsperosShadow Mar 31, 2026 +16
All I need is a glance of an only child to bust out singing New York Lonely Boy. Absolute classic

yesss I have loved it since I first heard it

KelVarnsen_2023 Mar 31, 2026 +7
I have been rewatching that show with my daughter who is really into musicals and I forgot how good the songs are. We are in season 2 where they are in the studio and recently watched the episode where Dawn writes a song about the word "set". It's a terrible song but Sara Bareilles is such a good singer that it's kind of a weird thing to watch. Plus it must take an insane amount of talent to intentionally write a song that bad.
7
PrayForMojo78 Mar 31, 2026 +8
I loved that show so much and will forever be heartbroken we didnt get 5 more seasons of that show. Sara B was the reason I watched the show in the first place but its an amazing cast top to bottom and the songs are so amazing. Thats the reason I loved Crazy Ex Girlfriend too (which if your daughter loves musicals... I dont know how old she is as the show deals with some pretty adult and serious issues though usually comically...but if shes old enough, she may love that show too) bc the song writing is incredible. They arent all homeruns on CEG but considering theres like 2-3 full on musical songs every episode, I give some leeway

I maintain that the Rural Juror song in 30 Rock is the funniest bit in any sitcom ever. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9G9o4yNjwo

Absolutely lost my shit watching that the first time it aired. Just knowing like how much effort they put into a five second joke was part of it, but just the delivery of that line and how perfectly it captured that novelty song genre was incredible.
12
Hopefulkitty Mar 31, 2026 +8
There's a full version done by Donald Glover as Tracy, if you didn't know. I'm pretty sure he wrote most of it, and pitched it.
8
tophmcmasterson Mar 31, 2026 +4
Yeah I’m aware of it, it’s absolutely ridiculous lol.
4
mikejones84 Mar 31, 2026 +6
The throwaway jokes are so f****** hilarious too. I rewatch these all the time just to catch new jokes I missed the first time. There was one joke about a show on the BBC that had 13 episodes over 16 seasons. After watching BBC shows that only have three episodes per season I laughed my ass off.
6
tophmcmasterson Mar 31, 2026 +9
The other one that stuck to me was Tracy berating a pigeon lol “stop eating people’s old French fries pigeon have some self-respect, don’t you know you can fly?”
9
withbellson Mar 31, 2026 +3
We throw this into our Halloween party soundtrack every year and see who notices. (Another important song in that playlist is Halloween Surfboard, from Superstore. No one has ever recognized that one…well, not yet.)
3
Chataboutgames Mar 31, 2026 +14
"These were the best days of my phlergm" being the last line of 30 Rock simultaneously makes me emotional and laugh my ass off.

Jeff Richmond, absolute genius. Muffin top is a classic.

And that's why Tina married him. See guys, you don't have to be in the 1% to get a woman, you just need to be funny and talented. Find something to put your energy into.
16
Alexispinpgh Mar 31, 2026 +6
It’s so weird to me because I think the Mean Girls musical is absolute trash and he did the music for that, too.
6
RJWolfe Mar 31, 2026 +3
That damn credits song was the worst/best alarm last time I put 30 Rock on to sleep.
3
automated_alice Mar 31, 2026 +2
The best part about Muffin Top is how many times they use variations of that song as score throughout the series.

The sad funeral tribute version with background strippers doing the robot is superior.

Sometimes when I slice up some cheese as a night-time snack, I'll sing "Working on my night cheese\~!"

okay_then_ Mar 31, 2026 +2
"I heard you singing Night Cheese." I'm not sure if this is the intention, but I'm always so tickled by the idea that Jack is already familiar with the song. Night Cheese isn't just a one-off for Liz.

The girls 5eva theme song and also the short Reggie Dinkins theme song are bangers
41
glasslooks Mar 31, 2026 +11
I'm really enjoying Reggie Dinkins! The cast is great, It is dense with jokes and I have to keep going back so I don't miss anything :-)
11
RegularGuy815 Mar 31, 2026 +11
Yeah, I am glad to see Reggie Dinkins has those out-of-nowhere random-ass lines that make me laugh, but not so stuffed with them that it becomes too much. Also, "Daniel Radcliffe is thirsty for Megan Thee Stallion who plays a postal worker" is an all-timer subplot pitch.

"I'm a star, I'm on top, SOME-BODY BRING ME SOME HAAAAAMM" Fun fact, I'm pretty sure virtually all the music was written by Tina's husband, Jeff Richmond.
31
chrissesky13 Mar 31, 2026 +11
I know Jeff wrote the songs for Girls5eva, you're likely onto something here!

Salma Hayek: Lemon, isn’t there a slanket somewhere you should be filling with your farts?

Salma Hayek had not seen the slanket. She just assumed the slanket. And she was right.

Honestly I am surprised the quasi-famous garage band The Woggles didn't sue them.

in 2019 we were at a festival in our mid 30s and made friends with some kids next to us in their early 20s. We were hanging out late and passing an aux around and I put on ["B**** in California"](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=akoi-aIHN1g) and it did not go well.

I can't remember the exactl Kimmy Schmidt episode but there is one where she and Titus are in a church (I think in his hometown). And at the end there is a gospel choir singing, and the lyrics are actually the show's theme song rewritten to be a song about Jesus.
