It's a fine movie. My kids liked it. I've described it as a C+ movie if you aren't a Nintendo person.
If you are, it's full of Easter eggs and fun Mario things that is enough of a nostalgia bomb for Nintendo adults and kids with an appetite for Mario action. Not everything has to be Academy award worthy to be entertaining.

Exactly my thoughts on the Minecraft movie. I'm sure I'll generally enjoy this as well.
Movie critics shouldn't really be deciding whether or not *you'll* enjoy the movie anyway.

Real critics used to view a movie for what it is. Like, if Siskel and Ebert reviewed this movie they would criticize a lot of elements. In the end it would get a thumbs up anyway because it filled it's niche and achieved what it set out to do.
Older critics could acknowledge these things. Today it's a bunch of assholes in a writing contest to see who can cram in more cliches while coming off as the most pretentious.
Mario isnt a 10/10. Nowhere near. But it's fun. No one is arguing against these faux critics that it's an amazing movie. But when one critic wrote how the movie put him in literal physical discomfort and he had to stab himself with a pen to keep watching... It shows they don't take this seriously.

This is pretty much how I felt about it. It’s probably a worse *movie* than the first, but it’s filled with so much nostalgia masturbation material for nintendo fans that it’s basically impossible not to enjoy if you are one

"critics" couldn't figure this out.
This is why the age of critics is over. They can create their own little sublistnook for the cliche riddled pretentious writing experiments they enjoy so much. They offer no value. The idiots reviewed this movie as if they were expecting art. It's a f****** spectacle you nitwits. It's fun.

theres nothing wrong with liking it, but it's a bit shallow of a movie in my opinion.
it looks good though, imagination did good i think with the visuals, but story-wise it doesnt feel all that coherent at all, also it felt like they made a lot of scenes just for the sake of setting up other possible movies instead of for any sort of relevance to the story they were telling right then.

It is on the same level tbh. Anybody who says the first one was significantly better is giving the first one a little too much credit.

I thought the second one was better. I at least got an out loud chuckle.
The part where other characters, in both films, are teasing Mario for liking Peach and wanting to go out with her is really weird. Surprised to see that come back in the second one.
Otherwise, I think the second one was better with the plot, the first was a series of scenes woven together with no thread, and the second was slightly (but definitely not fully) better on that front. For example, the part where Star Fox takes off with the crew and then suddenly the Bowsers are breaking through a moon/planet and chasing them seemed out of nowhere, so it’s still not perfect there. One major improvement was the score, using Mario music throughout and not fully relying on pop music like part one (and most illumination movies) did. I thought Bowser Jr. and conflicted Bowser was a much more interesting villain dynamic than part one. Making peach and Rosalina sisters was a good move for the movies and added some extra depth. I’m shocked anyone says the first is better tbh. I thought part one was straight up not good, and this one was not annoying at all.
Btw, part one has the worst scene of either movie in the training montage where there’s this urgency to get to wherever but Mario can go if he completes this obstacle course that takes seemingly days to master. And then of course it’s all set to the totally played out “I need a hero.”

Came home and turned on the first one and I think the first one really had that nostalgia punch going for it that still holds up a few years later. Definitely my favorite of the two but Galaxy stands well on its own.

But if you’re adapting something to a largely narrative driven medium like filmmaking, you should probably put more effort into the storytelling aspects. Also games and movies are different mediums and prioritize different things.

Saw it with my nephews yesterday, and it was…..a movie.
There’s so many problems with it, but as long as the kiddos enjoyed it, I’m not wasting too much time breaking it all down.
However, kids deserve so much better, and they’ve been so significantly failed yet again….

That’s pretty much Mario games. There’s basically no story to work with and that was a creative choice, so that they’d have the freedom to do any sort of crazy fun gameplay mechanics they wanted.

Top_Performance9486Apr 6, 2026

There are Mario games with more involved and well executed storylines, especially in the RPG genre. Mario storyline just adapts to whatever genre the game is, so you’d think for a movie they would try a little harder to at least have a tight and simple plot that suits the film format, but they barely even have that. They’re complete messes.

MrEHamApr 6, 2026

Haven’t seen the second one yet but I enjoyed the first one. Too much story and new plots they introduce just kinda takes away from the point of Mario.

That’s my exact frustration tho. I’ll genuinely take the live action Mario movie over these animated ones since it truly feels like a collection of references and in game cutscenes stuck together. Having no story is not a problem when a video game has so much more to offer as an interactive experience, but movies rely much more on their narrative. Why adapt Mario into a movie if you’re not going to use the mediums strengths ? Like yes I know the answer is money but you get my point. Feels like wasted pitential
4
Top_Performance9486Apr 6, 2026

I don’t think the first one needed “more story” necessarily. It just needed a tighter, more coherent plot. There were a lot of things that happened that just didn’t lead anywhere satisfying or felt needlessly disjointed from the overall narrative.
I’m all for the Mario wackiness, but even the side scrolling Mario games, which have very simplistic plots, tell coherent stories.

Which is great for a game. The plot of Mario games is the thing that‘s utterly simple, Bowser kidnaps Peach, Mario saves her, the end. The story however is what you do along the way, and it’s incredibly rich. Exploring all kinds of wacky environments, turning into a Raccoon, a Frog, a Bee, going to the Moon, riding a Loch Ness monster, capering an airship etc. etc. This is great and engaging for a game because it‘s you the player actually doing all of it, and it‘s fun on a purely mechanical level.
Translated 1:1 to a movie it just doesn‘t work at all tho because it‘s not interactive. It‘s not engaging, it‘s just stimulating. It‘s the movie equivalent of mindlessly scrolling TikTok for 2 hours.
Good kid‘s movies are engaging as well, that‘s not an excuse at all in my opinion.

Me and the wife liked it and the kids LOVED it. It’s funny, full of nostalgia and kept us entertained throughout. Yoshi being added to the mix was awesome. A lot of folks are complaining about the lack of significance or that it didn’t make kids think enough lol and thats okay but it’s a Super Mario Bros movie.. much like the Minecraft movie, its totally okay to just be fun and not be an academy level heart string puller. Someone in this thread critiqued it while comparing it to UP 😭 this was a fun movie but people should temper their expectations a bit tbh.

The whole thing felt like an unearned, ongoing crescendo. There weren't any lulls to give way to character development or any depth whatsoever.
It was just fun scene after fun scene after fun scene. Which makes the fun c****. I want to care about these characters but the movie doesn't give me a chance.
These cash grabs rob kids of the opportunity to get immersed and invested in good story telling. They have the budget to make something great. It's disappointing

Strongly agree. Took my kids and was exhausted by the physical assault of noise and action scene after action scene with no meaningful plot, and zero character development. Compared to a peer movie like Minecraft Movie, which I enjoyed all things considered, I give this 1.5 stars.
