So same as the first one? Looking forward to the mindless eye candy.

Same. As a millennial, the nostalgia does hit well.

Reviews on movies are pointless on films like these. They are just supposed to be fun movies with a very simple story and good humor. I just watched the new Anaconda movie simply to watch Jack black and Paul Rudd goofing off the entire time together and for that reason I thought it was great.

ItsKingDx3 Apr 1, 2026 +30
Kids movies range in quality, it's good to critique them. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is a fun kids movie with a really good story and artistic direction.
30
RageOfKhonshu Apr 1, 2026 +19
Yeah, I’m tired of all the excuses that it’s just a kids movie and meant to be mindless. There are plenty of good animated movies that both kids and adults can enjoy and actually take something away from
19
myparentsareasingle Apr 1, 2026 +6
The new hoppers movie was fantastic. Actually made me tear up. Kids movies can absolutely mean something so I’m with you with the stupid ass mindless comments.

Harley_Sonder_ Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's not an excuse, the point is that there is room for movies, very clearly going by its success, where u essentially watch a massive bulk of connected moments that either make u laugh or grin for a little under 2 hours. I'd also say it is, much like the first movie, a perfect reflection of Nintendo's hyper focus on fun in their games. To reflect ur argument back at you, u can make an incredible movie that both kids and adults can enjoy without there being something to take away from it. It feels like old cartoon network. Sit down and laugh for a while. That's it.

first pokemon movie (original japanese version)
1
TumultuousTeeK Apr 1, 2026 +8
The jokes in the first one weren't good though and the story just was too thin to stay engaged. The flashy colors and animation are well and good, but it gets boring if you're not a kid.
8
tread52 Apr 1, 2026 +9
I thought it was entertaining for a kids film. I had no issues with it
9
TumultuousTeeK Apr 1, 2026 +3
I'm glad other people have been enjoying these movies. I just wish I could say the same.
3
MrEHam Apr 1, 2026 +2
Same. They did a great job making it feel like Mario.
2
ItsKingDx3 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Really? They completely botched Peach's character
2
ChiltonGains Apr 1, 2026 +2
Even the crassest and basest of films deserves to be taken seriously enough to criticize.
2
bobmac102 Apr 1, 2026 +3
I think some people defensive of these movies have it in their mind that critics are expecting them to be like Schindler's List, and that's not the case at all. There are hundreds of fun kid's movies with simple plots that are considered excellent films by any metric and are recognized as such. Films like The Iron Giant, Finding Nemo, Spirited Away, Project Hail Mary, The Wizard of Oz, Shrek, Iron Man, Beauty and the Beast, The Wild Robot, The Lego Movie, and many others. Even the original Despicable Me produced by the same studio that made these Mario films was decent. Rather than think critics just do not understand these movies or are setting their expectations too high for fun family movies, consider there might be legitimate problems with The Super Mario Galaxy Movie that make it weaker than it needs to be. It does not need to be exactly like the ones I listed, but the point is that kid's movies — including ones with simple plots and modest themes and narratives — can be great. If you had a good time seeing this movie, good for you. I'm glad you had fun. But if you find yourself excusing things you took issue with because "it's a kid's movie" or "it's Mario", perhaps ask yourself why you are setting your standards low. Personally, as a lifelong fan of cinema and the Super Mario platformers, I think the gaming series deserves better films than the ones provided, especially Super Mario Galaxy. Illumination and their corporate partners have reduced an effusive, surreal, and joyous game series about exploration and platforming adventures to long, vacuous commercials. There is no innate reason why it had to be this way.
3
Linkeq200 Apr 1, 2026 +3
You can see and feel this in the illumination Minions movies. The first one had that bit of heart and emotion that was mixed in with the slapstick humour and visuals the series is known for. The second one a little less so, the third almost devoid of it.

InterestPractical974 Apr 1, 2026 +1

nonsense
1
tread52 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Most critics are shit when it comes to family films like these. There’s a reason rotten tomatoes critic score is consistently bad compared to audience score.
1
Sweaty_Attorney_4732 Apr 1, 2026 +1
I thought it was hilarious! Proper piss take of those sort of movies. One of my fave jack black films
1
Marbas_Aurelius Apr 1, 2026 +1
As someone who's watched it; The plot was basic yet fun, the animation was phenomenal, the references were great and I'd watch it again with friends over some weed and beer. The Star Fox backstory threw me in the best of ways. Wasn't dragged out, was relevant to him being there and the art style change up worked well. My only gripe was it felt like King Wart's plotline was left unfinished. Not in an "we see him in the after credits scene" type of thing just outright forgotten.

JohnR1977 Apr 1, 2026 +1

ACubeInABox Apr 1, 2026 +1
“Kids movies” does not imply that it should be held to a lower standard. If classic Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, or Studio Ghibli have taught us *anything*, it’s that kids movies can wholly transcend their demographic and be amazing entertainment for everyone, if not be the best movie of their respective year. Source: Haven’t seen the movie yet, but didn’t like the first one all that much to begin with
1
No_Cheetah4762 Mar 31, 2026 +45
I mean the first was basically G rated Family Guy. Thin story and just a bunch of references. Why would the sequel be any different?
45
Ok-Connection5010 Mar 31, 2026 +17
Nah, the first in 1993 had a great plot.

It’s Mari-over. Now watch it make over a billion dollars.
14
VeryPteri Mar 31, 2026 +67
I'm fine with people enjoying a mindless Mario movie. But a Mario movie doesn't \*have\* to be mindless. Oh well.
67
Joey-WilcoXXX Mar 31, 2026 +10
This. Exactly what everyone kept defending last time. Guys, we have come a loooong way from ‘cartoons are stupid and no one cares if they’re good or not.’ Mario can be held to some standards too.
10
miketheman0506 Apr 1, 2026 +1
This. And the people who say "It's like the story of every Mario game ever", forget that some of the Mario RPG games have simple plots but strong executions. Of course it could be done in a movie if they actually tried.
1
DaKingaDaNorth Mar 31, 2026 +31
Devil's advocate, pretty much every Mario game to exist is about as barebones on story as possible. It's not character or plot driven and too much of that is more of liability to be a distraction or be too different from what is actually appealing about it
31
Ordinary-Picture4367 Mar 31, 2026 +21
Yeah but it's a movie you'd expect some sort of a plot
21
Ok_Post_5597 Mar 31, 2026 +2
If you really want to go there, the first movie had a plot.
2
Ok-Connection5010 Mar 31, 2026 -5
Yes, the \*first\* movie in 1993 had a great plot!
-5
Ok_Post_5597 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Hey that movie in 2023 had a great one too, relatively. Edit: just to add. I noticed there seems to be a few people, just in general surrounding the Mario movies, now trying to argue as if the 1993 movie was some sort of underrated masterpiece compared to the new movies. I certainly liked parts of that one too but it wasnt good, lets not pretend it was.
1
Ok-Connection5010 Apr 1, 2026 -1
Compared to the new one? It really doesn't take much to be a "masterpiece."
-1
Ok_Post_5597 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Now you're tryin too hard
2
ThisKid420 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Executed so poorly
1
Cenobyte_Nom-nom-nom Apr 1, 2026 +1
The games take longer than the movies length, they could have written plots and stories for the games a long long time ago. So no I don't expect any sort of plot from a videogame series with minimal plot.
1
MySmellyRacoon Apr 1, 2026 -2
Oh man just wait till you find out what the plot is for every single Mario game to ever have been made.
-2
Ordinary-Picture4367 Apr 1, 2026 +2
I know that but those are games they don't necessarily need a story. I'm not saying the movie should have a deep one just something man
2
JAAAMBOOO Mar 31, 2026 +4
Came here to say this. There’s no real story and, if there was, it just gets rewritten in the next mario game. That said, they could go the Super Mario RPG / paper Mario route with the story but that’d prob be better over a trilogy or tv series
4
dave_ketchup13 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Definitely agree. I’d like to see a bowsers inside story adaptation but that’s obviously too niche
1
Moonwalker_4Life Mar 31, 2026 +1
Why not make a type of Mario kart movie where a team put together by Mario needs to win a certain amount of races to save so and so. I feel like that could work and be fun.
1
JAAAMBOOO Mar 31, 2026 +1
That’s the point, like Mario does everything with everyone that there is no continuity in the story.
1
VeryPteri Mar 31, 2026 +1
So people like the legacy of Mario and what it represents, more than Mario itself?
1
SaintNutella Apr 1, 2026 +1
What do you mean? A game can be good - great even - without a plot. I'm not a Mario fan but I can understand the appeal: - Fun art - Great music - Engaging gameplay - Consistent enjoyment Movies like these are nostalgia bait, so of course legacy matters, but there are other substantive reasons for why people enjoy Mario.
1
Devreckas Apr 1, 2026 +1
Mario is appealing despite not having a story, not because of it.
1
TheMightySpoon13 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Yeah but this was the one Mario game that did have a deeper story and mature emotional themes. They absolutely shat all over the game’s legacy.
1
phantom-firion Mar 31, 2026 -1
The last time someone decided to something “different” with the Mario ip we got punk dinosaurs dystopias, de-evolution rays, and no one looking even close to their video game counter parts. As much as I love the 90s Mario movie for how bad it is, I’m very happy for them to play it safe (still hate Chris Pratt voicing Mario though
-1
VeryPteri Mar 31, 2026 +4
I didn't say "different". Funny though, I would consider both the live action and animated movies mindless and void of substance.
4
BigDaelito Mar 31, 2026 +26
So the same thing as the Minecraft and five nights of Freddy’s movies. Most of the target audience will be happy to get the kids out, and they probably love it like the first one.
26
Ravensflockmate Apr 1, 2026 +4
Maybe people should have higher standards than "it shut my kids up for the runtime."
4
Nenebear123 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Not every kids movie needs to be award winning. I enjoyed the Freddy movies with my daughter even though they were pretty bad.
2
ThisKid420 Apr 1, 2026
Isnt so bad. I know Mario is popular and loved by all, but kids movies need to be kids movies.
0
LooseSeal88 Mar 31, 2026 +39
I mean, that's what the first one was
39
isuckdevilsc0ck Apr 1, 2026 +1
And it was also panned for that
1
DisgruntledNCO Mar 31, 2026 +27
In other words, my 6 year old will love it and it’ll sell toys, like it’s meant to.

30-something woman here who always believed that Sega do what Nintendon’t, and I loved *The Super Mario Bros. Movie.* I reserved my seat for 11AM in Dolby tomorrow like two weeks ago.
2
Hayterfan Apr 1, 2026 +1
I'm leaving work early tomorrow to catch it before schools start getting out. When the first came out I caught a 4pm screening and it was PACKED. So hopefully 1pm isn't as bad.
1
TurkeyVolumeGuesser Apr 1, 2026 +1
I used to say something similar lol. Even had the Sega Channel!
1
Ravensflockmate Apr 1, 2026 -3
Maybe have higher standards for what you show your 6-year-old instead of just feeding them whatever slop shuts them up for a bit
-3
trevmustdie Apr 1, 2026 +5
Its a shame that no matter how little effort they put into truly creating something special, this lazy effort with member berries and references Will always net them the pay day. They ride off of the extremely popular brand, until, like marvel, they slowly dilute that brands worth
5
Clive_Barker_Fan Apr 1, 2026 +1
Both are still strong in their own right. Nintendo and Marvel are more than shitty movies.
1
IAMA_MAGIC_8BALL_AMA Mar 31, 2026 +7
It being a great movie would be a bonus, but it’s Illumination. I don’t expect it to be anything beyond “fun,” even if it’s objectively bad lmao. As long as I can watch it without being bored and there’s a good bit of references to the games for me to point out, then I’m happy.
7
Gullivergoofball Apr 1, 2026 -1
At least someone here had the common sense to bring Illumination up in this regard! You'd think a lot more people in this forum would be more willing to mention this, considering they have been doing this with their films for the longest time, but of course not.  Either way, I sincerely hope you have a good time watching the movie :).
-1
MagnetoWasRight24 Mar 31, 2026 +9
Honestly the part that stood out to me is the review calling the first movie "one of the best animated films in years"
9
ThisKid420 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Its definitely not the best in years, but for a movie and video game adaptation I was very pleased
2
Chalupaca_Bruh Apr 1, 2026 +3
Nintendo isn’t going to let Illumination craft a compelling story or character depth that risks contradicting 40+ years of paper thin plot in the games. Mario has very specific lane if Miyamoto’s creative input in other games is anything to go by.  The characters and the worlds exist solely to deliver fun and interesting gameplay mechanics.  I get wanting more but this is arguably Nintendo’s worst franchise if we’re looking to get any semblance of compelling narrative. For that, I’m fine with a fun, if mindless movie. We’re not getting a Thousand Year Door adaptation, as much as I’d love one.  Zelda’s execution will be the interesting one…
3
Plowzone Apr 1, 2026 +1
I feel like if you let good writers cook, they can do something pretty good with the property (eg. Look at the Paper Mario games). The Sonic movies are obviously not set in the same canon, so I think there can be room for creativity in the film medium like the games have done for years. Dunno what the heck they’re thinking to be honest.
1
miketheman0506 Apr 1, 2026 +1
This. People keep saying that because the majority of mainline Mario games barely have a plot, the same should be expected from a movie. But the Paper Mario games, have already shown that a simple plot, but a strong execution through memorable characters/writing is possible.
1
breakevencloud Mar 31, 2026 +8
I dunno what reviewers and adults in general are looking for out of a movie, but I’ve come to “rate” movies based on how well they entertain/engross/whatever their target audiences. Mario is, at its heart, a family/kid’s movie. My kid adored the first one, therefore, it succeeded and I rate it pretty highly for that. I’m expecting more of the same out of the sequel.
8
Ravensflockmate Apr 1, 2026 +2
Kids will eat whatever slop you give them if they're conditioned to low standards
2
FriendlyFriendster Apr 1, 2026 +1
I wouldn't say they're conditioned to low standards, I think they just have no frame of reference, no lifetime of better movies to compare it against. Everything is brand new to them, so the predictable plot twists and things we see coming from a mile away are completely out of left field for them.
1
DoctorSchwifty Apr 1, 2026 +2
What i I told you that the 1st Super Mario movie was barely a movie and more of a fun experience?
2
iamnotfemale_ Apr 1, 2026 +2
Just watched it. It’s pretty nostalgic tho. It’s based off a franchise of video games made for all ages what did you expect
2
jazza2400 Apr 1, 2026 +2
Soooooo another $1b+ blockbuster?
2
Chardan0001 Mar 31, 2026 +5
I'm sure in general there will be a very mature and measured response to all reviews of this film. Right?
5
Gullivergoofball Apr 1, 2026 +1
Or all responses to the reviews themselves.
1
tmfkslp Mar 31, 2026 +5
I actually really enjoyed the first one, granted i was absolutely lit on edibles at the time.
5
ThisKid420 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Do it again
1
Thril1h0 Mar 31, 2026 +4
Movies are now made for tiktok audiences
4
TomBirkenstock Mar 31, 2026 +6
The sequel to the awful first film is also awful. I'm really shocked and surprised.
6
whiteguyballin Mar 31, 2026 -8
It’s a kid movie. It’s fine
-8
Icy_Smoke_733 Mar 31, 2026 +9
I hate this criticism: just reducing it to a "kids" film does not mean you neglect quality in your product. Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, The Wild Robot, Inside Out 2, Across the SpiderVerse, and Zootopia 2 have been some of the most critically acclaimed animated films in recent times, and they were enjoyable by **both** kids and adults.
9
TheMightySpoon13 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Rango is another fantastic example.
1
dekgear Mar 31, 2026 +2
Add Kung Fu panda as well, the first three movies anyways.
2
dancingbriefcase Mar 31, 2026
Ha I was just typing the same thing!
0
dancingbriefcase Mar 31, 2026 +3
Just because it's a kids film doesn't mean it can't be good. Puss in Boots: Last Wish, Spiderverse films, the new TMNT film were all "kids" films But we're freaking fantastic and accessible to everybody. Moreover, studio Ghibli makes films directed towards kids, but they are regarded as some of the best. I don't understand why people have to act just because it's a kids film that it means it's lesser
3
matts142 Mar 31, 2026
All just because it’s kid movie does not mean adults shouldn’t see it lol some say it’s a movie for kids lol and I am Mario from the 80s they was kids and now grown adults so adults would see this too
0
matts142 Mar 31, 2026 +1
A kids movie when Mario was first seen in the 80s and all them was kids and now they grown adults so many of the audience is grown adults too
1
More-Ice-1929 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Listnook's gonna love it lol
2
Gullivergoofball Apr 1, 2026 +1
Don't forget the rest of the internet!
1
n3rdsm4sh3r Mar 31, 2026 +2
An animated movie about a video game is a mindless 90 minutes offering fan service? Crazy.
2
Quiet-Sky6990 Mar 31, 2026 +2
Super Smash Bros Movie When? That Space Emissary was a work of art.
2
TheCircleLurker Mar 31, 2026 +2
Filled with Easter eggs? So a movie for the fan base and not for anyone who’s never played the games. Guess it’ll bobomb!
2
YodaForceGhost Mar 31, 2026 +4
Definitely trying to profit off all the kids who’ll want to see this. It’s not meant to be an Oscar-caliber film
4
Gullivergoofball Apr 1, 2026 +1
Nobody was asking this movie to be that in the first place, even in comparison to other kids movies...
1
Tomazito70 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Still is gonna make millions of dollars
1
Gullivergoofball Apr 1, 2026 +2
Well, nobody said it wouldn't.
2
Wise-Locksmith-6438 Mar 31, 2026 +1
They’re starting to become like the FNAF movies in terms of critical reception
1
Training_Pirate1000 Mar 31, 2026 +1
Does it at least look good?
1
linefl0 Apr 1, 2026 +1
It's from Illumination, so no
1
enigm1984 Mar 31, 2026 +1
I said it to other people but illumination doesnt make good movies. They make movies that make money. Thats the reason nintendo went with them.
1
Ok_Post_5597 Mar 31, 2026 +1
As a resident Despicable Me fan and huge fuckin nerd, ive been disappointed by Illumination before. Rug pulled with a sequel that practically squandered the characters they had. (DM3 to 4) However Mario 1 was a decent enough simple movie to establish the base and i expect the sequel to expand their interpretation of the characters. If Galaxy pulls a Despicable Me 4 by throwing the character threads to the wayside too much, yeah ill be disappointed.
1
deviltakeyou Apr 1, 2026 +1
Why are people looking to Super Mario for an enthralling plot? I literally just want to see easter eggs and Yoshi. I bet they’re going to say the same thing about the Legend of Zelda movie when it comes out. The games all have almost the exact same plot every single time. It’s almost like it’s the gameplay people care about, not the story.
1
surfpearl39 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Nothing wrong with wanting a better movie
1
Alive_Ad_5931 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Say it with me: “The movie was made for children.”
1
TJ_McWeaksauce Apr 1, 2026 +1
Makes me think of the Five Nights at Freddy's movie. It's barely a horror movie, but it's loaded with fan service and it made a tidy profit, especially since its costs were low. Super Mario Galaxy is expensive as hell, but kids, families, and fans will still watch it and make it profitable.
1
Admirable_Pin275 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Read a bit in until i saw a spoiler. Boo…
1
thatbiguy3000 Apr 1, 2026 +1
It’s Variety. They shit on everything.
1
Disastrous-Ant5378 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Which means it’s good lmao
1
BigBadJeebus Apr 1, 2026 +1
Sonic>Mario... At least in movies. So weird that Sonic, whose game and media was for a long time a fairly generic rip off of Dragon Ball Z combined with, well... Super Mario, was able to create a trilogy and current mediascape that has a dynamic and creative plot that entertains and holds up, yet Mario, whose game has hundreds of unique characters and worlds and spin offs, can't offer anymore than fan service... Someone at Illumination needs an enema.
1
SIipkid Apr 1, 2026 +1
If the zelda movie is like this, I'm going to be sad.
1
JohnR1977 Apr 1, 2026 +1
Nintendo just doesn’t care about quality when it comes to movies. it’s very sad
1
franstoobnsf Mar 31, 2026 -1
I have been waiting for the Mario cinema experience I have been owed for like 35 years. All little kid me wanted was an overly colorful visual vomit of video game Easter Eggs while the 1 UP noise and level 1-1 theme plays. I don't wanna hear this played out bullshit about the "charm" of the 90s movie and "technically you had a-" no. That was not a Mario Bros movie. I know it and everybody knows it. I will watch and enjoy that shit but this new animated movie has fulfilled my childhood dream and I'll watch it and all 700 sequels. As long as it feels even remotely like I've fired up my SNES and am watching a movie of that, I don't care how "good" (whatever definition of that word youtube crybabies are going with that day) it is. Mario will save the day and triumphant music will play. You Are a Super Player, thank you for playing. Let's A Go, Motherfuckers.

2
somesthetic Mar 31, 2026 +1
The games themselves are pretty threadbare on plot and motivation.
1
thedoommerchant Mar 31, 2026 +1
Excellent, as a huge Nintendo fan this seems made for me and children. Can’t wait.
1
ThisKid420 Apr 1, 2026 +1
The biggest complaint ive seen is that it was made for Mario fans. Offers nothing new into the world of Mario. So a Mario movie is about Mario and feels like Mario...this doesnt sound bad to me

My hot take on these movies.. The first Mario movie, Wreck-It Ralph, the lego movie, the Minecraft movie, And, yes, the emoji movie... are all fine movies with basically the same storyline and they're all about on par with each other. I say this because I think people hate the emoji movie because of how dumb the concept is, But as a movie it's fine. It's acceptable, It's funny at times and the story is heartwarming and palatable. Some of these movies get beloved because people like the IP and some of them get shit on cuz people don't. They're all the same f****** movie and none is better than any of the others. It's all corporate slop and it's fine. It's fine. It does what it meant to do. They're all fine. I could put on any one of these movies right now and I would enjoy my evening.

Your hot take is a pretty terrible comparison. Wreck-it-Ralph and The Lego Movie are much better movies overall than the rest you listed. Movies arent just their plot points. Ill defend Mario as an enjoyable romp, emoji movie could be the same type of romp if you ignored what it stands for, but you'd have to be dumb to think the other 2 movies aren't more entertaining and thought out ideas.

see... . No they aren't. They're fine. These aren't groundbreaking movies. They're movie that successfully hit the beats of a good formula.

"These arent groundbreaking movies" im not claiming they are. Im saying they are better movies than the others because they flesh out their concepts for the screen better. Its dumb to compare them only because they share the underdog hero story elements.

I wish more people would understand this. They’re better than slop, but they’re not like Interstellar or Knives Out. They’re especially nostalgic if you like the IP

How are The Lego Movie and the other movies you listed of the same quality?

> But as a movie it's fine. It's acceptable, It's funny at times and the story is heartwarming and palatable. Patrick Stewart voicing the Poop Emoji will never not be funny.

We have Chris Pratt as Mario, was that not an indicator? Look the only real question is will I have fun? And if it's anything like the first one, the answer is yes. The real question is when do we get the Sonic crossover?

That’s weird. One would expect that a cartoon movie based on a children’s video game would do something like spend more time exploring the contradictions implied in Shopenhauer’s Theory of Open Individualism than be dumb fun that makes a bunch of references to those games. A creative choice on the director’s part, I suppose.
