The Time Machine 1960

Posted by Herzeleid09

This movie has a special place in my heart. As a kid I watched this all the time. So much so that today I can practically recite the whole movie. The music is epic. This was so technologically advanced for its time as well. It’s my go to “I’m sick and bored” movie. Who else has appreciation for this classic?

Great movie. Also one of my favorite film scores of all time.

I am stuck thinking of this movies music and lines. “Books yes we have books”. And the talking rings “my name is of no consequence…” glad to have another person who respects this classic

Yep. Feels very influential too on tons of different media through the years.

I went to a tiny liberal arts college in Hawaii. The art instructor was Bill Brace. He did all of the matte paintings for this movie.

Now that's a lost art form. Painting on glass for camera shots. There are some gorgeous mattes in the film.

Love it for the acting, the sentimental repeated returns to George's home street with the Filby store dominating the scene, the equally nostalgic heart-tugging Filby-George friendship over a long span of years, Filby's son Jamie's appearance, Russell Garcia's plaintive "old England" theme for the friendship with its brief citation of Debussy's "Girl With the Flaxen Hair" (a nod to Yvette Mimieux's "Weena" character)...and of course the demonic troglodyte Morlocks. A truly haunting film that occupies a revered place in my heart.

I saw this in the theater when it came out. I was probably 12 or 13 and I remember it scared the hell out of me. The soundtrack was especially forboding and then the Morlock’s.😳 I had nightmares for days.

yup, I used to be scared of the Morlocks too.

Have you watched the exciting Romantic Thriller **Time After Time**? It's about H.G. Welles actually inventing that Time Machine...and using it to chase the murderous Jack-the-Ripper from London to modern day San Francisco. It's a delight. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/time_after_time

Did anyone one else think Rod Taylor looked like a well-to-do version of Robin Williams?

[The Time Machine: The Journey Back](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1qWRd-zkBDI&t=301s) is a short sequel. George returns 17 years after he left, and finds Filby still looking after the estate. Same actors.

the time machine is a total classic! the effects were wild for back then, and the soundtrack really adds to the whole vibe. can't believe how many times i’ve watched it too.

Time machine, the war of the worlds and forbidden planet were my sci-fi trifecta, i watched them all whenever they were on.

Forbidden planet and Robbie, the robot I remember so well. One of the best Science Fiction movies of its time.

I love it too! There are some beautiful shots in the movie that look like they could be paintings.

Love it. I actually saw it for the first time in school my History class. My History teacher was so fun. She did stuff like that all the time. Including having her clases running around the halls reenacting historical events The remake was just awful

In the Los Angeles area, back in the 1970s, maybe into the 1980s, Tom Hatten hosted the Family Film Festival on channel 5, KTLA. Every Saturday or Sunday (maybe both, I'm old), he'd come on tv in the afternoon and play some timeless masterpiece/piece of c*** from the 50s and 60s. He'd show Danny Kaye and Jerry Lewis. He'd show old monster movies. And you better believe that one of the gems he showed on a regular basis was The Time Machine, a sci-fi spectacular with effects that still blew us away in the 70s... of course, we were kids. I think Rod Taylor, along with Gene Barry and his type, inspired a lot of us young men to go out and conquer or defend worlds, usually in our back yards.

I've always loved this film, as a kid the shop window mannequin changing stuck in my mind.

I love this film! It’s cosy and I think it does a fantastic job adapting the book. And visually speaking it holds up a lot better than other science fiction films from around the same time.

Every once in a while the stop-motion sequence of the dresses changing on the mannequin in the window reminds of how fast life is going.

As a kid, I really wanted to have a miniature time machine like in the movie

It's a great movie, loads of fun, although it does take a fair number of liberties with the original story, the latter of which is really excellent. Funnily enough I only listened to an audiobook of the story yesterday, seek out the reading by Ralph Cosham if you feel like listening to the story, his narration is perfect for the material. For example: https://www.chirpbooks.com/audiobooks/the-time-machine-and-other-stories-by-h-g-wells Or just buy the book. :)
