Over on the combat sub they call it "cooking off" when you blow up ammo depots.
18
AtrociousMeandering Mar 31, 2026 +18
I think 'sympathetic detonation' would be the term you'd see on paperwork.
18
Ok_Philosopher_6028 Mar 31, 2026 +12
What about the parasympathetic detonation system?
12
beachedwhale1945 Mar 31, 2026 +3
Cooking off more properly is when explosives in a fire get hot enough to explode. There are some videos of the *Forrestal* fire showing bombs cooking off on the flight deck. That would be true for the explosions that started a few minutes after the main blast. The main blast though is more properly sympathetic detonations, when one explosion sets off adjacent explosives.

tatofarms Mar 31, 2026 +82
Technically, decimated means a reduction by a factor of ten.
82
aristidedn Mar 31, 2026 +128
Technically, reduction by a factor of ten would mean a 90% reduction. Decimation technically (by its archaic definition) means a ***10%*** reduction. Which is probably closer to accurate, given how little we seem to have affected Iran's ability to strike its neighbors.
128
Sylvanussr Mar 31, 2026 +36
It’s more likely that they destroyed 100% of the ammunition, given that it’s explosive. I’d guess that the reason Iran has been able to keep firing is that their depots are small and spread out, not that the US can’t blow them up properly when hit.
36
my_name_is_juice Mar 31, 2026 +13
Isn't the daily missile launch out of Iran down to less than 10% of what it was in the first week or so of the war? Some of that could be due to their running low on ammo but it certainly seems like the attacks are having a pretty tangible impact on their offensive capabilities
13
leisurechef Mar 31, 2026 +25
I’m always amazed at how people misuse the term “decimation”
25
aristidedn Mar 31, 2026 +76
Words evolve over time, and "decimate" today doesn't mean what it used to mean. And that's okay. It's fun trivia to know, but has little use beyond that.
76
xelah1 Mar 31, 2026 +10
Complaining about proto-evolutions in meaning which are unhelpful or just bloody stupid is a part of that process of evolution, and that's OK. 'Decimate' isn't too bad because its real meaning isn't all that useful. Words like 'exponential' and 'confirm' are, though, so a curse upon on the morons who use them in their degraded, less useful meanings.
10
aristidedn Mar 31, 2026 +2
I know the lexical tension around "exponential", but I've never heard of anything around "confirm". What's going on there?
2
xelah1 Mar 31, 2026 +4
In corporatespeak 'confirm' seems to mean 'tell', at least in the UK. For example, 'could you confirm your name, please?' from someone who has never received any information about your name before.
4
aristidedn Mar 31, 2026 +4
Oh, interesting. Not the case in the US, as far as I've experienced (and I'm pretty deep in corporate America). Hopefully that doesn't migrate overseas. This seems pretty straightforward to push back on, though. "Could you confirm your name, please?" "Of course, go ahead and tell me what you have in your records and I'll confirm its accuracy."
4
leisurechef Mar 31, 2026
Fun Fact, it was a Roman thing: In the military of ancient Rome, decimation (from Latin decimatio 'destruction of a tenth'[1]) was a form of military discipline in which every tenth man in a group was executed by members of his cohort. The discipline was used by senior commanders in the Roman army to punish units or large groups guilty of capital offences, such as cowardice, mutiny, desertion, and insubordination, and for pacification of rebellious legions.

Just saw the explosion in combat footage. Yeah. This was a big f****** depot Id say. The fact it was underground and still produced such a massive explosion tells me that it was a lot of munitions.
199
CBT7commander Mar 31, 2026 +114
Most Iranian ammunition is stored underground, because Iran knew they would lose air control in minutes, and anything on the surface would be easy pickings. Seems the U.S. is changing strategy from simply bombing the entrances and trapping the munitions underground, to digging their way into the depots one 2000 pounder at a time

He isn't aware of what's going on. Chances are good the generals aren't giving him the complete picture and even if they were he isn't capable of understanding it.  Vance, Hegseth, and Miller are in charge here and are using Trump to run interference. It's not any more complicated than that.

These are "c****" at like $30,000 each.  The video shows a lot of secondary explosions, which means they were successful at destroying munitions that would have otherwise been fired. That's a hell of a lot cheaper than shooting them out of the sky with million dollar interceptors or repairing damage to infrastructure.

2
Jamesp_8 Mar 31, 2026 +7
Bunker busters are 30k??
7
Weebus Mar 31, 2026 +65
There are a bunch of different bombs called bunker busters. The 2,000lb one is likely the BLU-109, which costs around $20-30k each for the base bomb. Most likely has a JDAM kit though, which would about double the cost. The GBU-57, which is the largest, is like $4M a pop, but a lot of that cost is the low quantity.
65
CBT7commander Mar 31, 2026 +16
The 2000 pounders are. JDAMs are incredibly c****. Even the high end ones like the ER variants are 80k a piece
16
few Mar 31, 2026 +7
Yes, once air defenses have been eliminated, and then long range bombers can safely fly overhead and drop giant bombs mostly straight down into targets it becomes a much lower cost. Tomahawks and other long-range precision munitions need a lot of fuel, complicated control and guidance systems, because they fly long distances before hitting targets. Needing more fuel and electronics also means carrying less explosives as a fraction of bomb mass. It also makes them extremely expensive.
7

6
CBT7commander Mar 31, 2026 +14
The U.S. spends less per capita on defense than some countries that do have universal healthcare. The U.S. spends more per capita on healthcare than countries that do have universal healthcare. There is no connection between DOD budget and lack of American universal healthcare. Go complain about the things that actually cause you not to have "free" healthcare, like lobbying from insurance companies
14
koreamax Mar 31, 2026 +8
Its crazy thst healthcare funding can be debated for decades then just one guy can decide to spend all that money on a war no one wants
8
CBT7commander Mar 31, 2026 +9
The war on terror cost 2 trillion. That’s about 1.3 years of healthcare spending. Additional budget request by the DOD was 200 billion, that’s about 2 months of healthcare budget. There is no correlation between military spending and lack of healthcare.
9
Diezelbub Mar 31, 2026 +5
Always drives me up the wall how bad listnook is at understanding just how much healthcare costs. The US government *already* spends around triple what it does on all military branches on healthcare for the poor and elderly in the form of Medicare and medicaid but most despise hearing it. You could ban military spending and fold every dime spent into healthcare but it is still nowhere near enough to fund a single payer system. Whoever manufactured this "military spending is stopping healthcare" myth never did some very basic math before spreading it.
5
BirdLawConnoisseur Mar 31, 2026 +2
Quick Google suggests the War on Terror cost four times as much as you’re suggesting. I’m not sure what you mean that there’s “no correlation.” I think most Americans would have preferred to spend that money on healthcare than those wars though.

I think this is the 3rd obliteration, the Oblit3ration, if you will. I think on Obliterat10n X: the Obliter-Nation, we will truly have obliterated them. Obliterated like you've never seen before.

So they are no longer a threat right? Just like the last time we used a bunker buster to stop their nuclear capabilities.....right?

So many crappy news sites reporting on this. This one is at least marginally readable: [https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/03/31/iran-attacks-fully-loaded-oil-tanker-in-dubai/](https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2026/03/31/iran-attacks-fully-loaded-oil-tanker-in-dubai/) Don't know why it says "iran attacks fully loaded oil tanker in dubai".

It should be noted that there is not a shortage of these bunker busting bombs. Intelligence on underground locations is not an issue, and neither is the bombs to destroy munitions piles. This is a good thing for America, it now becomes a matter of time to see how fast they can bomb stockpiles and track munitions movements to prevent drone and missile usage.
