Too late too late Paramount. You should just kept with original plan and t
released it in theaters (leak or no leak). It most likely would made its money back

The options left to them should've been either to release it NOW on streaming or put it back in theaters for a limited run.
The entire film leaked in HD, and they do nothing. Paramount's worthless.

sadly, after watching it, I can see why it didn’t make theatres.
It is beautifully animated but outside of that incredibly hollow and not a good followup to one of the greatest animated series of all time.
Avatar is a world about character interactions, and this was an hour and 20 minutes of stitched together set pieces instead

I said the same thing to my friend who is on the fence about watching it at all. ATLA did well because of the Gaang, not just Aang, which this movie is all about. I found it rather boring up until the last 30 minutes or so.

Limited run is a weekend/week event with less than 600 theaters.
Equating a run to Chainsaw and Infinity Castle. both were full on theatrical releases with marketing. And by Hollywood definition not a limited run.
5

It wouldn’t cost nearly as much to do a limited run and evidence of those two runs doing so well show that it would most definitely make a ton of money, no?
1

No because you can’t compare the success of two wide release movies with massive marketing campaigns to a potential limited run with minimal marketing. It’s like saying “these oranges taste good so I bet that apple over there is going to be delicious”
Also the apple already has a bite taken out of it because it was leaked so people already got a taste

Remember when paramount was trying to buy HBO and said Netflix doesn't put movies in theaters.... Then they pulled a theatrical release to dump it on their streaming service....
3
meatshoe693 days ago
+3
What exactly should they do about the leak? It already happened, idk what else they can do… I hate paramount as much as the next guy, especially considering I was laid off by them this year. But they have a pretty good idea about projected viewership and how much money they’ll make off things. The budget of the movie was like $80m. Theatrical releases require them to share profit with distributors and theaters. I’m guessing they did the math and aren’t betting on making their money back from theatrical. This is a problem across the whole industry. Not enough people are going to see films domestically and they take less of a percentage internationally.
3
ol-gormsby1 day ago
+1
"Theatrical releases require them to share profit with distributors and theaters."
See, this is an attitude I find difficult to understand.
How exactly is a producer supposed to see a return on their investment \*without\* showing the film in cinemas? The term "sharing profit" isn't really valid. There is no profit without bums on seats whether it's cinema ticket-buyers or streaming subscribers, so "sharing profit" is a misnomer.
Plenty of low-budget films disappear with little trace, having never returned their production cost. Doesn't mean they're not worth making and some countries support these endeavours without expecting a return. Those stories are worth telling and those artists are worth supporting.
It's only the US-style blockbusters that cost multi-millions for the principal actors and directors, that raise these concerns about "profit" and "sharing".
Everyone in the chain plays a role and should be fairly compensated for their efforts. Story originator, scriptwriter, producer, executive producer (the actual source of the money), the director, the cast and crew, the distributor, and the cinemas.
"Sharing profit" with cinemas being painted as a burden for producers is a poor way to view the actual source of profits. Big-budget films are already paid for before production starts. It's an investment with a poor chance of substantial payoff, but a tax write-off either way. If it shows a profit with lots of bums on seats, so much the better.
So don't view cinemas as a burden that you have to share profits with. No cinemas (or no streaming), and there's no profits. Pay a fair share without complaining.

The sound was perfect on my system. I was actually really impressed by the mixing, im a bass head, and my subwoofer was having a field day with this movie.
The voice acting is a little weak - like I can tell it wasnt all recorded on the same model of microphone. But they're not going to change that by October. What leaked was the final, polished production copy.
I've already seen the movie.
The movie is perfect. Screw Paramount for taking the movie out of theaters. I would have went to IMAX to see this movie. The movie is an easy recommendation.
I am going to buy the movie probably going to buy both digital and Blue Ray. I don't like giving Paramount money, but I love anything Avatar. I want more of them as adults. It's one of the better growing up I've seen in film. The movie got me rewatching the show and both are so great. It's incredible how the original show still holds up to this day.
That said I refuse to sign up for Paramount +. Again screw Paramount.

Such a classic plot
>!- meet this "Good guy" ;) !<
>!- he needs your help with a task!<
>!- uh-oh! He's a bad guy!!<
>!- kill him!!<
>!It didnt help that this movies announcement included Dave Bautista as an "Unnamed Villian". So as soon as I heard Bautista's voice, I realize he must be "Unnamed Villian".!<
1
NerfAkira1 day ago
+1
even as a classic plot is so rough, because the denied don't make any sense (plot holes) and the plot literally resolves itself if they dont do anything.
>!They rob aang of a map at the start of the series, setting off immediately in their airship (for which, they have a fleet).!<
>!Aang flies around, meets with katara, plays telephone with a few thousand years worth of avatars, and finally finds who one conveniently gives Aang misinformation. Aang then flies to, and scales the mountain, freeing bad guy mc badguystein.!<
>!they then wait around for the bad guy to wait up, before explaining the entire situation, and then he informs them he knows where to go.!<
>!they then READY THEIR AIRSHIP, and depart, magically passing the denied, but dont worry apparently if they all sat on their asses and did nothing the denied would have died in a gigantic storm. this alone means the plot of the movie was pointless, he bad guys are own their way to commit suicide, and the protagonists win by going to starbucks for the afternoon.!<
its hilarious they point this out in the movie, with the line "wait how did they pass us, we have the map" because well... how did they? aang went on an entire sidequest.
unironically this is the perfect moment for this:
>!...also how the hell did they even know about the map? did they find a magic book with all information 5-thousand years old, and then take it as gospel, enough to risk all their normal lives on? Im not even sure why these folks want bending at all, they seem perfectly capable of going toe to toe with benders.!<
>!finally, the big bad guy just decides at the most random moment to betray, rather than the most basic premise of either getting exposed, or getting what they want before revealing their evil. Katara's like "my boyfriend trusts you, but i dont trust you" to which Evil-mc-Evil replies "okay cool, im murdering all of you"!<
How was it perfect lmao. Childrens story with no resolution. Characters acting out of character and random plot holes. Overuse of references. Idk I didnt enjoy it at all.

Loved seeing the team Avatar back together, movie did a great job respecting everyone. The villain was really interesting and I thought he did a good job being threatening. It's incredible seeing Aang grown up and Zuko and Sokka are an excellent duo. Toph continues to be the greatest Earth Bender EVER!
Knowing how the movie could have gone, they did great. No spoilers obviously. I would give the movie a solid 9/10. I want to see more of them actually as adults. It seemed like movie was made for Avatar fans, and hell it got me rewatching the show again.

Thats dumb. Why wouldnt the target audience be those that saw the original? I also tend to find movies that are bad for adults are also bad for children. If it doesnt make sense, show good development, and have a resolution, thats bad. For adults and kids. I am 32. I dont mind kids movies or shows when they are done well. Mulan as an example is fantastic.
0
GreatGojira3 days ago
Who cares the target rang of a movie? The movie deals with subjects that kid definitely don't get and teenagers may miss it.
I think the movie does a respectable job of being a good film that deserves a theatrical release like Demon Slayers got.
It's an easy film that doesn't throw everything in your face unlike the Mario Galaxy movie. It's a film that the entire family could actually enjoy.

I've seen the film and they should just spend the extra money and redo parts of the film. I don't think fans will be happy. Avatar works great as a show because it builds all the characters up and we love or dislike characters as it progresses. Issue with the movie is it makes all the other characters in the team sidekicks and literally comedic relief and that's why it sucks. The disrespect to Zuko in this movie is mind blowing, they turned him into sokka 2 basically lol

1
r20023 days ago
+2
What made the original series good is the growth of characters. Through conflict, reflection, self discovery, compromise, empathy and understanding they become interesting and better people.
We don't really get much of that here. It's all focused on Aang. And his job is just to be naive and act surprised like he always does when something goes wrong. The rest of the gang is just here to say their catch phrases and their standard jokes. The storyline of searching for air nomads was covered aplenty in the Korra series. Not sure what this movie adds to the whole body of work.
*edited to add: I do agree the animation is fine. If that was a main reason why you enjoyed the original series then I say it's worth watching.
2
VictorReal_Monster2 days ago
+2
Isnt that kinda the rub between a show and movie?
look at Star Trek movies, you can only move characters forward so much in a limited span of time, they're different formats, a movie (especially ones based of tv show) is/are generally much more closer to a snapshot in a characters life than a deep dive, you just simply don't have enough time.
2
r20022 days ago

I think you make an excellent point. The shorter time frame does make it harder. But I think there are great movies like Galaxy Quest that create micro arcs for the ensemble cast while still maintaining an emotional core around the main character.

The opening was great nostalgic, mid was okay, the ending was predictable and cliche. Not as good as The Last Airbender series but way better than The Legend of Korra in story wise. Animation is top notch. I can see a TV series with adult Aang if they can make a good story plot. Though I have my doubts since Korra makes it limited for plot creativity since some plots are already written in stones.
