There's something strange going on with The Boys new episodes (no spoilers)

Going to keep this spoiler free as I am specifically talking about the technical production aspects of the new season rather than the plot. 1. The SFX took a huge step down. The ending scene of episode 1 and the "big" character in episode 2 look so c****. 2. What is going on with the audio? One character's voice sounds like it has been almost completely ADR'd despite there being no reason (on-screen) for that to be the case. 3. The editing is crazy. There are so many shots that are cut too soon. It's like if there isn't a character speaking on screen, the show is fast forwarding it despite those shots being super important for framing and context. It's so distracting to have something that obviously needs to sit for a second or two longer be jump cut away to something else. 4. Everything has this really weird filter look over the top. It's much more noticeable on lighter things so it sticks out on faces and skin more than anything else but it's on inanimate objects as well.

Regarding #2, I have no idea why it’s like that, but it’s so distracting. She’s a good actor and has a great voice, but it sounds like the entirety of her dialogue was re-recorded after the fact, which makes her sound like an awful actor.

I wonder if she used a more realistic hoarse voice for someone who didn’t speak for the majority of her life and they changed direction in post.

Yup, that was my initial thought too - or she went for an accent or something that in retrospect she couldn’t pull off and they had to switch it. Even if the audio was perfect, her lack of an accent is a little disorienting to me

The only explanation I can think of is she supposedly used tiktok to learn how to talk, so she's emulating what a voice sounds like coming out of a phone speaker. It's a stretch for sure, but it's all I've been able to come up with.

I think it's because they didn't know how much they wanted to commit to the "Kimiko can talk now" development while filming. They filmed scenes with her still communicating only through facial reactions or gestures, and then changed their minds afterwards.

This seems like the most plausible explanation I've seen. The sound person did a really poor job of mixing it in.

It doesn't help that the way she actually speaks doesn't seem to fit with the character from all of the other seasons or the original comic inspirations. The voice would be fine if the dialog actually made sense rather than them just using it for humor and shrugging it off as "she's been watching TikTok".

I read somewhere that they are using AI now to do ADR so it looks like they said the line but its still recorded in post.

Maybe its just not hearing the actress speak previously, but the audio for Kimiko just didnt sound right with her mouth. Its like it was dubbed in, or the audiomixing made it sound different than others speaking in those scenes. Maybe its just how she talks, but it just felt off to me.

I highly doubt it. Karen Fukuhara is an accomplished voice actress.

I didn't really have any expectations of what Kimiko would sound like talking, but if I did, it wouldn't have been her sounding like Becky from Nebraska

I hate some of the dialogue they’ve written for her. I don’t care if she learned from TikTok, why does she need to speak like an 8th grader who just learned how to swear? It’s like the writers said “ok so Kimiko hasn’t gotten to say f*** all series long so let’s get her caught up”. I don’t have an issue with profanity but every character sounds the exact same in this show because of it. Reminds me of Age of Ultron where every character was suddenly quippy and quick witted like Tony Stark. They all sounded the same.

watch an interview from karen fukuhara. she doesn't sound like this at all. her voice is way more bubbly.

Kimiko I figured just sounded AI because she learned English from tik tok. Annie sounds like she can barely get words out of her face lol

The cuts and audio editing has been insane. I have no idea what they were thinking. Snap cutting just to see a character sitting with their mouth open without keeping any kind of consistent eye line was so distracting it felt like it had to be an intentional decision. Hard to believe anyone watched any of this and thought it was a good use of time unless they were REALLY padding for time.

something is very off this season and only seen the first two episodes. it's like the sound of the actors voices and they're overall energy is all wrong. They have cool ideas like the mountain gooner guy and Ashley's voldemort , but the boys themselves homelander are just almost AI like this season. Kimicos voice especially.

Loo at the episode 1 editing when A-Train comes in. The whole sequence doesn't make sense editing wise when he confronts Homelander and the next scene Hughie is saved. Horrendous editing.

I noticed that Homelander’s skin (on his face) did not look great. It could be a choice by the director but it was rather yellow and sickly looking in some scenes. Maybe the lighting?

I started the new season, but it was so depressing and bleak that I realized I no longer enjoy it and it's just bringing me anxiety. It all was quite sad and grey. Also the episode kept referencing Gen V season 2, which I also hadn't seen.

I thought the closure to >!A-Train’s storyline!< was very well done and a great first development to the season. I think they’re going to stick the landing at least. Hughie and Homelander’s standoff in the barracks was also an amazing scene that should have been longer.

Yeah, I hadn't seen gen V season 2. Hoped it wouldnt be necessary since season 1 wasnt critical previously. Guess it does matter more now

The fight scenes are incoherent, and the jokes really aren't very good this season- i'm watching out of loyalty but it's all pretty lazy- last seasons of long running shows are always like this- they just feel like they're trudging to the finish line out of obligation.

I noticed so many cuts in the fight scenes, and close ups. The pacing is a bit off and the saturation or something is off. Can't put my finger on it..

On top of the audio, about half the subtitles seemed to just be missing. I tried to watch while exercising this morning, but my squeaky equipment made the show hard to hear, and the inconsistent subtitles made me pause it.

It has all the hallmarks of AI color grading and image correction. It always, as a rule, looks like washed out fuzzy garbage, but studios save money and people slurp it up anyway so they don't care. I don't know WTF is up with the audio mix. I noticed the same for Kimiko and thought I was going crazy. It's like they had to re-dub all of her lines.

It absolutely does not. This is the same look the show has had from the beginning. People on listnook really need to stop accusing everything they don't like as being AI. It's become the most lazy and thought terminating criticism

There is a noticeable difference in the quality of heavy CGI scenes, and yes, AI image correction is typically the culprit. If you can't see that, well, I don't know how to help you.

I'm not even claiming the show is high art or anything. I'm just saying the aesthetic of the show is consistent. It looks the same as previous seasons. I have my own problems with the "look", but I've come to accept that is just what they are going for. Yes, AI is used more these days, but I think you are really grasping at straws with this one. It's fine to just say "I don't like the aesthetic of this show" without making the same old lazy/tired "everything I don't like is AI" complaint that is rampant on this website, as if humans are incapable of producing shoddy work.

Am I the only one who thinks the beginning of the new season is missing so much details? Like.. where is Ryan? At the end of the previous season the actor from Gen V whispered her power in Frenchies ear (assuming it was to get him in the van to go to the freedom camp) but how did M.M and Hughie end up there? Most of all am I missing how Ashley became vice president? Or is it just me

The show kinda sucks, always has, I imagine they’re saving the budget for the final episode, so everything else looks worse in comparison.

It’s entertaining, I remember enjoying it, but at the end of the day, it’s still “The Boys”, it’s nothing truly high quality.
