I started getting into music back in summer 2023, Almost all of the music content I consumed was from tiktok. Over time I developed this habit of hating on popular songs just because they are popular and glazing less popular songs because they are niche, I only listened to music that is considered good by the people on tiktok, It was like I did not have a thought in my head like a npc in video game. last year I had a very busy school year so I spent way less time on social media and started listening to whatever I was feeling that day, During this period my opinion on a lot of albums/songs drastically, A lot of songs that I considered bad just because the music tiktokers said so turned out to be great songs. I also noticed that the people around me who spend a lot of time social media behave like this IT IS LIKE NO ONE HAS A BRAIN ANYMORE EVERONE HAS THE SAME OPINOIN, Not just in music they share the same opinion on every single topic (games, movies, anime.......) WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?
sorry for yapping too much, But I just had to this off my chest.
Tv shows also. I know someone who exclusively watches tv shows on TikTok. He just finished The Sopranos and insists that he saw all the important parts

What the f***? How do you follow a storyline that way? Some of the best moments in classic shows are those little one or two second looks, sounds, or phrases that would probably never make it into a highlight clip.

I remember reading about kids pretty much only using TikTok for everything. Like you'll tell them to look up something and instead of Google they'll go on TikTok.

Mate, I was hating popular songs, glazing niche ones, and letting other people’s opinions dictate what I listened to.. 40 years ago. Don’t need TikTok to be influenced by the crowd. We all figure this out after a while.

I would definitely agree this feels very Middle School "I'm not like the other people" music tastes in the sense of hating anything popular and only liking niche things. A lot of kids probably go through this phase thinking it makes them more interesting and cool

With all due respect, if you have 2 years of experience with music, you may not be qualified to judge what’s the worst thing that ever happened to it.
TikTok is a cancer in general though, not just to music.

The real reason tiktok is bad is because everyone uses the same few seconds of any popular song, lowering the overall attention span. This is a pattern that's followed worldwide.
Songwriters battle everyday to make the song be suitable for tiktok

I mean to be fair, this is nothing new at all in music circles. For example in the last 10-20 years there was a huge stereotype of hipsters gatekeeping and hating on any music that Pitchfork or other indie blogs didn't push.

Music, Books, Politics, Health info, Food related info, Basic facts.. is all shit on by TikTok’s garbage content. The whole platform preys on people that lack critical thinking skills. TikTok is a cancer on society.
Oh, and now it’s owned/operated by the Ellison Nazis.

Young people tend to get their tastes from the collective anyway. Tiktok is just this with strangers instead of your friends. It is just the world. Though now you are more free to explore what music you like while in the past you would get music from radio, TV and your cool friends who had bought some cool music on record, tape or CD.
11

Except with tiktok you get the same 15s - 1minute loop of the same dozen or so songs.

Sure, but they are not just talking about what songs but what the social reaction [is.It](http://is.It) is less impactful for someone online to say such and such song sucks than your friends to do so.

This seems less about tiktok music being bad and more about the fact that you were just very impressionable and conformed to everyone else's opinions on what was good or bad. The same kind of thing can happen within friend groups as well when everyone else likes a song so you just follow along too

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I've discovered a lot of cool music because of Tik Tok. I can't help but compare it to Vine back in the day, I feel like back then, either only trap was blowing up or that's the only stuff I'd hear. On Tik Tok, I get exposed to abwhole host of genres and musicians.

This is probably because the people interacting with those music posts are seeing them because they give other tiktok videos using that music high watch time because they already really like it. The algorithm on tiktok actively creates echo Chambers within communities this way

Nah I mean you can hate on it but AI and late stage capitalism are definitely the worst things to happen to music.
TikTok is just an algorithm.
It’s been super helpful for us, just by doing little performance videos. A lot of other cool as musicians do the same it’s rad.
Gives a lot of us tools that were pretty inaccessible back in the day.
I mean it’s not amazing or anything but it’s far from the worst, what you’re describing is just normal music shit, radio and magazines into music videos and mtv into blogs into Spotify playlists and TikTok.
It always ends up this way, if anything now is the most free and you don’t have like, an entire class of people that just identify as tool or RHCP fans.

This is nothing new. People have been enjoying the same things since forever, i.e pop music. My advice is to stop thinking about what other people are enjoying or not enjoying. Listen to your music and form your own opinions based not on outside factors but your opinion alone.
Your post comes off as a little arrogant, maybe a little feeling of superiority. Nothing wrong with that, we've all been there. But just have fun, things are not so serious.

Counter point. I have noticed my daughters music taste expand due to tik tok. I let her play music in the car and sometimes I’ll be surprised at a song she has playing. For example she played a crystal castles song and a Fleetwood Mac tune. Choices like this stand out in comparison to the usual diet of Taylor swift and Olivia Rodrigo.

Spotify silently forcing Ai music into playlists while forcing out real artists they have to pay, needs some consideration here for real damage to music.

I'm 39.
When I was young I hated pop music.
Now I like hearing early 2000's pop. It makes me think of my younger days and all the memories with my first girlfriend, friends, parties,...
TikTok and in extension all social media is a cancer for everything. My attention span has shortened massively.
I used to like trance. Tracks that even when transitioned from and to other tracks would play for 5-7 minutes.
Now I want music 2-3 minutes and out.

Sorry for yapping too much? This is literally a discussion forum. It gives people exposure to music they might not have heard otherwise but, unsurprisingly being forced to listen to the radio at work will do the same thing!
I'm 40 and I could not care LESS if I never hear another led zeppelin or any Canadian recording artist ever again. With such a vast history of music behind us it's very ironic that I can still hear the same f****** song 3 times in a day. Tik tok just makes the rate you don't like it faster because doomscrolling algorithm
