Tim Robinson Appreciation

Posted by TheSchmarms

Very new to his work. First watched The Chair on HBO. Thought that was brilliant. Laugh out loud funny moments and was totally caught up in the ridiculous mystery of it all. Some moments were even suspenseful. Next up I started Detroiters on Netflix. Very funny. Just starting that, but know it’ll be a fun watch the next couple of weeks. It’s like a nicer version of Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Why haven’t more people been telling me to seek out his stuff.

You are gonna have a real mind f*** when you get there. Watching I Think You Should Leave after The Chair Company sometimes feels like you are in The Chair Company.
43
Tifoso89 Apr 18, 2026 +22
On the sublistnook for The Chair Company we were wondering what someone would think if they watched that show without having seen ITYSL first, because the latter is more of an introduction to his style of comedy. It feels to me that TCC is like an extension of an ITYSL sketch. It's a bit Big Lebowski, a bit Lynchian

Kind of a cosmic gumbo.

I watched The Chair Company first. I liked it in a weird, mysterious Twin Peaks kind of way.

The Chair Company is like if an ITYSL sketch never ended, and things continued to spiral, and get dark, and wind up in a coke bar.

I think they’re the same actor, I don’t know if they’re supposed to be the same character. F*** I wish I had a quote memorised from that sketch with the network that has weird shit on it like coffin floppers, would probably be way more relevant, but that’ll have to do.

I randomly ran into Tim and his family on a fairly isolated beach in Maui, we were the only 2 families there. This was during the pandemic and right after the first season of ITYSL came out and he became meme famous. Dude was genuinely surprised I recognized him. He was insanely nice and happy about it. I just told him how great I thought the show was and he was just all smiles. Lovely family and genuine guy in real life. I never imagined he would get as popular as he is now.
29
b1gmouth Apr 18, 2026 +11

You were probably in a mall and didn't even realize it. They're very different now. More naturalistic and less intrusive.

Watching The Chair Company before ITYSL is wild. Not knowing Tim's style and then seeing TCC must have been a trip. I'm genuinely curious how you felt about TCC while watching it. Watch his movie Friendship with Paul Rudd. Very similar vibes to TCC.
10
ElectricalDark8280 Apr 18, 2026 +2
I started the chair company without knowing anything about him or the show. It was weird as f*** and mostly made me uncomfortable, but also intrigued. I’ve only seen a couple episodes so far. I’m still not sure how I feel about it

7
lemon_sherbet_trip Apr 18, 2026 +7
If you enjoy that style of comedy I'd recommend the movie Friendship as well starting him
7
imVeryPregnant Apr 18, 2026 +8
Tbh I thought I Think You Should Leave was so corny and couldn’t believe the hype. It’s just the same absurd yelling over and over again. There was a sketch or two that I actually liked but I was so disappointed
8
edicivo Apr 18, 2026 +7
I like Robinson a lot. Big fan of Detroiters and ITYSL.  That said, I do agree that he tends to lean into just yelling in weird voices wayyy too much. And the sketches can go a bit too long. Sketch comedy is hard to get right though.
7
Will-Of-D-3D2Y Apr 18, 2026 +6
I never got his style. Absurd humor only works for me when it is played completely straight, that is what makes it absurd. Tim Robinson overacting actually takes away from the humor for me, because it feels like he's screaming 'Look at how weird this is!' instead of letting the weirdness speak for itself.
6
vonsnack Apr 18, 2026 +7
haha he's...very popular. Kind of on you for not catching it. Also if you haven't seen his sketch show I Think You Should Leave, that is probably peak Robinson at least in terms of his absurdist humor.
7
TheSchmarms Apr 18, 2026 +3
Noted. I blame my friends, but sure. I made these friends, so ultimately it’s my fault.
3
DareToZamora Apr 18, 2026 +10
The worst thing about *my* friend group is that I have to pay to be in it. But speaking of friends, also try his film Friendship with Paul Rudd
10
BoboSmooth Apr 18, 2026 +2
The bit in the first episode where he "catches" the janitor using his outdoor wheelbarrow inside is peak Tim Robinson humor for me and I can't even explain why

CAMvsWILD 6 days ago +2
Tim Robinson, Nathan Fielder, and by extension, John Wilson, are living on a whole different surreal plane of existence. If I’m not mistaken, the first sketch of the first episode is a job interview that perfectly sums up his style of awkward humor. If you need a few random sketches to YouTube, some internet favs are: zip line, focus group, drive thru, egg man, and coffin flop. Also, some editor friends I’ve worked with did Coffin Flop. It’s so stupid.
2
Apprehensive_War173 6 days ago +2
I had the same reaction when I first stumbled into his stuff. It feels like you either randomly find it or someone finally puts you onto it. His humor is so specific that it almost catches you off guard at first, then suddenly it just clicks, and everything he does is hilarious.
2
TheSchmarms 6 days ago +1
Exactly. Already mad Detroiters only has two seasons.
1
GroundbreakingUse794 Apr 18, 2026 +2
My wife said something to me about him that ruined his humor for me for a few weeks haha she said “ it’s just toddler humor. The randomness the crazy reactions that don’t make sense. Yelling etc. and it bothered me because I immediately knew she was probably right but, there’s this weird aversion to it because it’s a little anarchic for some people who spend all their time trying to categorize everything and label things to make sense of them and he’s just too weird for most people, they find it disturbing to have fixations on things that don’t matter to the masses. It’s like a non conformity movement and that irritates some people I guess. I think he’s hilarious haha
2
FiveDollarRimjobs Apr 18, 2026 +2

DETROITERS! Sidenote, I had a dream the other night about Detroiters. Sam played Sam. But instead of Tim playing Tim it was Invasion Era Heel Stone Cold Steve Austin as Tim.
1
No-Alternative4259 Apr 18, 2026 +1
I've been a fan of Tim Robinson since the first season of ITYSL dropped. I watched all 3 seasons the day(s) they were released. I learned of Detroiters a few years ago (Oooo Devereaux!!!), binge-watfhed it and enjoyed it. I watched Friendship in theaters; a laugh-roaring family sat behind me and it was one of the best theater experiences I've ever had, and I go to the movies dozens of times a year. The Chair Company is a fever dream in the best way.

Just do yourself a favor and do not watch Friendship. Holy c*** was that movie incredibly hard to watch.
-1
Throwawayjermu Apr 18, 2026 +5
Hard in what sense? I've been meaning to watch it because of him.
5
bowlofpasta92 Apr 18, 2026 +7
I personally really liked it. Hardest I’ve laughed in a theatre last year easily. I can understand not vibing with Friendship if you weren’t familiar with Robinson’s humour though but if you’re a fan, you’ll like the movie.
7
Standard-Nerd Apr 18, 2026 +1
I’m a big fan of his comedy but didn’t really enjoy friendship, some of the jokes are great but it felt like spending too long with one of the more uncomfortable ITYSL sketches
1
HolidayNick Apr 18, 2026 -1
Big fan of his other stuff and it did start out funny. The turn it took is why it was so hard to watch. It is definitely on outlier to the rest of his comedy.
-1
HolidayNick Apr 18, 2026 +2
I watched it because of him but that movie is not what I thought it was going to be. It’s not a comedy at all like his other work. It a sad dark and depressing movie.
2
No_Profit2650 Apr 18, 2026 +8
It was a dark comedy, and definitely had tons of funny moments
8
interstellar304 Apr 18, 2026 +2
It started out like it was going to be a bro comedy within Tim Robinson’s style but definitely turned dark. Not a movie that makes you feel good after watching it
2
IrvinIrvingIII Apr 18, 2026 +1
It’s hilarious. I don’t know how you could like his other work but not this.
1
BaggySoup 6 days ago +1
Because he didn't write it.
1
IrvinIrvingIII 6 days ago +1
So? It’s not like he’s playing against type and it’s clearly got a lot of improve in it. Plus it’s by one of his Chair Company collaborators.
1
BaggySoup 6 days ago +1
I don't agree that it isn't a comedy or is outside of his wheelhouse, but not having written it *is* the difference between the film and his other popular tv stuff. It feels like an emulation of his style some times, and shoots for a more coherent theme/angle at others. There's crossover sure, but there is a lot to separate the film from his (imo, much better) TV work.
1
feed_me_haribo Apr 18, 2026 +1
Without giving away too much, I liked how it felt like it started as a quirky Tim Robinson Paul Rudd buddy movie and then... didn't follow that path.
1
itsnews Apr 18, 2026 +1
Isn't that what movies are about? Like, if you go in and don't like a movie because it didn't go in the direction you wanted it to or thought it would, why are you watching movies?
1
feed_me_haribo Apr 18, 2026 +1
Not really. Plenty of movies, good or bad, don't go a completely different direction. I enjoyed this one though in part because it didn't go as planned.
1
Poison_the_Phil Apr 18, 2026 +1
It’s just weird. Not my favorite thing he’s done but it’s definitely got some memorable parts. It’s a bit of a fever dream.
1
IrvinIrvingIII Apr 18, 2026
Ignore this person. I’ve watched it 4 times already.

To this day the subway drug trip sequence in “friendship” maybe the most I’ve ever actually laughed in a theater. His delivery of “I ordered a ham sandwhich” destroyed me.
1
HomoProfessionalis Apr 18, 2026 +1
Detroiters is one of my favorite sitcoms its so good. Sad there's only like 2 seasons but its super rewatchable cause Tim and Sam are such a great duo.
1
Hasbeast Apr 18, 2026 +1
As well as the obvious ITYSL recommendations, I recommend checking out the film Friendship as well. You’d probably also like Connor O’Malleys stuff, his YouTube stuff is phenomenal
1
DaddyBigBoy Apr 18, 2026 +1
Check out the extended cut of the garage/drum set scene with Tim and Connor. Way too long for the movie but very funny if you’re into these guys. Obviously you are if you’re here. 😄

I don't know if it's still available on Netflix, but one of his earlier projects was an episode of a show called The Characters. Basically each episode was one up and coming comedian doing their own sketch show. Tim Robinson's is the by far the best. I want to say it's episode 7. It might actually be the reason he got to do I Think You Should Leave, or at least it seems convenient timeline-wise in his career.
