So well acted too. That scene in the storage unit home when McConaughey goes and stands facing the storage room door, and the surprised dread in the exression from Harrelson is palatable. It gives me chills just remembering it. Edit : just occured to me how apropos the story line is to current events here in the usa.

It's so well done that it makes tha flaws of each subsequent season glaringly apparent. Season 2 was ok. Season 4 was awful.

I’d argue that every season after the first completely lost the magic of that season for 1 key reason - instead of us getting slowly and intentionally brought along as the detectives figure out the case, each of the subsequent seasons end with what amounts to face-to-face confessions with flashbacks of the actual crime. Such a lazy way to wrap up the story.
Season 1 wasn’t buttoned up with some neat little bow. We don’t even end up really knowing the why or how, just the who.

I don't think I could ever unequivocally assert that *anything* is the best when it comes to entertainment or storytelling. There is no greatest of all time movie, book, TV series, or game.
But if for some reason I was forced to pick one season of TV to declare it the best... the first season of True Detective would be one of the first things that would come to mind.

I think part of what makes it great is the solving of a mystery with an uncanny or eerie air to it. It’s not just the linear unfolding of a plot, we as the audience are experiencing something with the same limited knowledge the characters have. Westworld, Altered Carbon, The Expanse, Severance, Dark all kind of fall into the same category for me in that regard.
19
myassholealtMar 18, 2026

And, like a great novel, it's a show that's perfect for re watching, cause the second time through once you know the plot you pick up little foreshadowing things here and there, or dialogue or scenes that now make more sense after some of the mysteries are solved.
On first watch while you're still trying to figure out what's going on, those scenes don't mean as much. But second watch I remember quite a few times going ohhh. OK. It was a fun time.

True Detective is great, but yeah the actual wrap-up to the crime is a little disappointing, just turns out to be pretty mundane.
Which is fine, but I would've loved for them to lean a little more into the Lovecraft they were building around the middle. I don't need to see tentacles or monsters or anything but I would've preferred they kept up the ambiguity.
15
Zauberer-IMDBMar 18, 2026

They never truly wrap up the crime though. They never got Tuttle, and he was shady as hell, for instance. One of the themes is to be able to be happy with the victories you can get, even if the wider world is beset by dark forces beyond your ability to fully understand or stop. They got their guy, but they never wrapped anything up.

I think human consciousness is a tragic misstep in human evolution. We became too self aware; nature created an aspect of nature separate from itself. We are creatures that should not exist by natural law. We are things that labor under the illusion of having a self, a secretion of sensory experience and feeling, programmed with total assurance that we are each somebody, when in fact everybody’s nobody. I think the honorable thing for our species to do is deny our programming, stop reproducing, walk hand in hand into extinction, one last midnight, brothers and sisters opting out of a raw deal.

I know it's been out awhile, but I just watched it last week. What's everyone's opinion on Rust's ending?
8
TheInfernalSpark99Mar 18, 2026
+17
As an atheist I really liked it. Especially upon rewatch. The air of something supernatural hangs over the whole ending confrontation, a touch of the divine, or demonic, hard to say. The implications of Carcosa and the King in Yellow being unquantifiable things that may exist makes the idea of a soul simply existing no longer entirely impossible, even in the mind of a guy like Rust. I wouldn't go so far as to call it optimistic as an ending but rather a salve on an extremely raw and broken person. A moment of hope that maybe his preconceptions of the universe are wrong in a moment that he experienced and can't explain.
17
tobethorfinnMar 18, 2026
+12
My friend said it was implying Rust became religious, but I felt he simply was so close to death that he became closer to what his daughter had experienced. It did seem more open-ended than just all of a sudden being religious. That could just be my bias.
12
tragicallyohioMar 19, 2026
+7
Not religious. Just open to seeing a little light in what was once an eternal darkness for him.
7
AlphaGoldblumMar 18, 2026
+21
I think a lot of people misunderstand what actually happened in that scene. It's not a sudden pivot.
The entire season shows Rust loudly putting on a show of nihilism while his actions repeatedly say otherwise. A true nihilist would drop the case and let it go. But Rust keeps digging into it because, deep down, he doesn't *want* the void to be the only answer.
>!He and the Tuttle cult are actually walking the same path before they cosmically diverge; the Tuttles also don't want to believe in the void but god wouldn't answer their prayers, so they began to desecrate his works if just to invoke his anger and prove the void an illusion. They'd rather burn in hell if just to know that god, or any god at all, was real. Rust, because he's still holding on to hope, just wants to be proven wrong and to find even a reflection of light in that same void.!<
>!The ending is is true cosmic irony. Rust delivers the Tuttles/Errol what they sought the entire time - absolution from their lost cause, even in the form of a bullet. Perhaps they saw Rust as a messenger of god finally come to answer them. And Rust proves to himself that the void isn't all-consuming after all, that light exists because he himself manifested it.!<
21
michaelpinkwayneMar 18, 2026

The ending was the worst part of the first season, but that’s not saying much because literally everything else is an A+.
The optimistic tone just didn’t feel quite right to me. That said, ending something like that isn’t easy and it certainly didn’t take away from the overall show for me.
4
sewiousMar 18, 2026
+21
The ending happens the way it does because Rust has always been an optimist under his depressed shell.
He says things like everyone should collectively commit suicide, that evil will always win and it can't be stopped, but he is relentless in his pursuit of bringing justice and attempting to defeat the evils of the world. A man who has no hope doesn't try to stop the evil Cosmic entity pedo murderer for over a decade.
His actions and his words never really align until that ending conversation.

Heavy spoilers for the show ahead
https://www.findlaw.com/legalblogs/celebrity-justice/true-detective-legal-truths-did-a-real-case-inspire-the-show/
It’s based on an entirely different Epstein like situation but instead of a likely honeypot operation it’s satanism related
Part of the point of Rust Cohle story is that he realizes this story has happened numerous times, and there’s no way to beat an evil like this permanently and all his decades of hard work and attention only resulted in a low level grunt getting in trouble
IRL there are other Epstein islands, zorro ranches etc owned by other billionaires hidden in the hill sides. Time is flat circle and no matter what you do, that girl and that boy are going to be in that room somewhere.

I’m sorry, but Nietzsche’s entire philosophical project is to reject nihilism and affirm life in all its messy glory.
Eternal recurrence asks if you had to do what you are choosing forever, would you? Nietzsche says the goal is to be able to respond to that question with a yes—to live a life such that you can love your fate playing on a loop for eternity, amor fati.

I think it's illustrative of a single path. If you have a globe, and put a rubber band around it, the rubber band is a circle. You can put multiple rubber bands around the same sphere and each individual one would be a circle, but they would all have different paths around the globe. I think the point of calling it a flat circle is to reiterate that there is only a single pathway through time that cannot be changed.
It could also just be redundant.

You're applying realism to art. It's more productive to ask, "Why did they write it that way?"
Maybe it's natural dialogue. We all speak in redundancies, sometimes. It sells Rustin's speech as a stream of conscience, rather than a rehearsed monologue.
Or 'flat' could be a double entendre. Synonyms include dull, shallow or depressed. Perhaps Rustin is implying the futility of our repetitive lives.
Or it's even simpler than that. 'Time is a circle' doesn't carry nearly the same impact. That adjective, useless as it may seem, is what turns a throwaway line into something memorable and iconic.

It means it always loops around instead of moving forward, like a line. There's no deviation or alternate paths, like a sphere. It's a flat circle.

That's not a circle, that's a spiral.

For some reason I remember that from Red vs Blue but it was actually Alan Wake apparently?

Thank you, I always bring this up when this is posted. All circles are flat. It's a dumb line when you start thinking about, but it's the rule of cool, man.

The writing is so good I can't tell if Rust is intended to misunderstand Nietzsche (due to pessimistic bias prior to his experience at the end of the show) or if the writers just invoke it for atmosphere.

Inhale afterwards to draw the smoke in to your lungs?

Casting all-around for this show was brilliant, from the cops to the preacher in the tent scene...stunning acting especially for a tv series.

I just said that to myself while watching this clip. The real detectives that this story is from did an interview that was posted YouTube about 20 min long. In it, they stated that the people involved in its faces would physically distort!! They were very believable when describing it!!

“Interview Rust’s” complex stew of prickliness, cooperation, emotional exhaustion, bitterness and simmering anger is *so* well played by McConaughey. A touch more vociferous or a touch more laconic, and the elder character would have become quite different indeed.

The scene in the projects is top tier. This whole season is honestly remarkable and probably the best mini series / independent season of tv I’ve ever seen. If your in the comments but haven’t seen it go give it a try
