Why SNL though? That brings a **lot** of baggage, and it’s not as though the British market needs to leverage an existing brand to crack it open for sketch comedy (practically invented it with the Footlights and Oxford Revue 150 years ago, ffs)

It's Lorne's production company. Maybe he wants to give it a try before he retires (there is an SNL Korea after all).
How is trying out 6 episodes and testing the waters a bad thing? If it flops, it will go away. If it surprises and manages to be a hit, then it continues. You're making it sound like some risky life-and-death tightrope walk.

After Hillary lost toTrump, SNL looked as sad as someone having to put their cat down. The unironic impersonation of Hillary singing Hallelujah completely lost the script. Dark humor would have been called for but that was macabre.

I dare anyone who claims “SNL USED TO BE FUNNY!” to go watch the original episode. It’s *atrocious*.
Granted, some of it is just because it was a different time. The format and content were relatively subversive for the time, so it doesn’t translate to modern viewing. And obviously the cast were all comedic geniuses.
But the show is still full of duds. Even Carlin’s standup is weak compared to his typical sets. And people think SNL is repetitive now, but wait til they find out they did Coneheads like 14 times in 2 years.

I will admit my favourite era was 2008-ish (Fred Armisen · Will Forte · Bill Hader · Darrell Hammond · Seth Meyers · Amy Poehler · Kristen Wiig · Jason Sudeikis · Kenen Thompson · Maya Rudolph · Andy Samberg) as they seemed to just let them cook. Very very smart comedians. The Falconer "Time Travel" may be one of my all-time favourite sketch comedy bits, not just SNL.
ETA Colonel Angus is something I will watch whenever I feel like laughing out loud.

I'm not gonna lie, yes, you do have to sift through a decent amount of c*** with SNL.
But it's basically the biggest American School of Comedy. Which means a lot of it is weird, experimental, or filler they threw together at the last second to accommodate a change. Sometimes its pure gold, by accident or otherwise. But it remains a place where comedy talent can test out new, weird shit on a massive stage and that's kind of cool.
10

Really struggling to see how this is going to be good.
Tina Fey is a bad choice for a first guest. She’s not particularly well-known in the UK but is obviously a big SNL name, which will detract from the actual performers who are making their debut.
I like some of the comedians involved but nobody in that clip looked comfortable doing sketch comedy. Their acting skills aren’t great. The line reading was wooden.
I don’t really know what the audience is for this. Current affairs satire in the UK is handled by panel shows. Sketch shows tend to be much more polished. To like this you need to be a fan of both sub genres and also happy to watch something likely lower quality. That’s a niche audience.
Even on the off-chance it’s actually good, it’s on Sky 1 starting at 10pm. Late night TV has never really struck me as a “thing” in the UK. 10pm is time for the news or a film. Sky 1 isn’t really a channel with a defined “style” either - if this were on channel 4 it might attract some sort of crowd.
I’d be surprised if this got a second series. I’m assuming they’re banking hard on a couple of clips picking up steam on social media but if this first offering is anything to go by, I’m not holding my breath.

Where funny? It's a promo for a comedy show with zero comedy. I suppose if you like jokes about f****** and the Epstein files this might be right up your street. Lots for the chin strokers I guess.
SNL isn't funny however the trope of it was funny 10 years ago is easily explained. There have at certain times been incredibly talented comedians and writers on that show and it's at those certain times there were funny sketches but they were very few and far between.
Even if this is funny which I doubt it's doomed to fail before it's started because it's on a low ratings subscription service channel.

Yes. The UK with a million panel shows already and history of rejecting UK knock offs of American IP

While that's true, the UK is much more willing to watch the original show compared to the US and the remakes tended to be badly made copies.
Now this might flop but it's still original material.

If you mean watch the Original US ones, I doubt you'll find many people who know what SNL is here.

I meant for shows in general, like the US wouldn't just pop a UK show into a main s***, like we have with US ones,
I would say many haven't watched the original, although it has a prime spot now but plenty have heard of it.

It's behind a paywall channel that garners a tiny portion of the UK viewing audience, like single figures percentage wise. Saturday night TV in the UK traditionally is about light variety shows and football.
This starts at 10pm and ends at 11:15pm, but ITV will be showing the Jonathan Ross show (not as popular as Graham Norton but still big) and on BBC One at 10:30pm is Match Of The Day.
If Sky/Comcast manage to buy ITV they could put it on ITV1 and it would probably do really well but that's probably some way off.

Given SNL's history, she should have just brought out a giant bag of cocaine. But I guess they couldn't get away with that.

I have no idea why they chose to start with Tina Fey, I reckon most Brits have literally no idea who she is. 30 Rock wasn't really watched here, and neither is the US SNL.

So the US rights to this show are owned by the Peacock Network (NBC online), but they're airing it a day after its aired live.
WHAT THE F***
Just stream it live worldwide, you morons.
This isn't 1974.
F***.

There is an SNL UK?

However big 30 Rock was, it ended 13 (thirteen) years ago. It doesn’t stand a chance if Tina Fey is the biggest star they can get for the opening episode.

Is she from the UK or does the UK not have a big enough star to kick it off?

They’ve got Jamie Dornan and Riz Ahmed after her, she’s there to pass the torch on from the originals

The two most recent SNL hosts weren’t American. Many aren’t. Truly a dumb take.

I think the stakes are a little different for the **first** episode of a British version of an American show.

The problem is nobody cares about Sky TV beyond sports. They've had a bunch of shows like Buzzcocks, League of Their Own, Rob v Romesh, even Mock the Week has been revived, and I've never heard anyone talk about them.
It'd get much more traction on Channel 4.

Mock the Week is actually on TLC, it's actually still good.

Yeah I suspect they're all pretty good, but I don't think it does them any favours being stuck on Sky.
I'll wait for Dave to get them all in a few years.

They're not on sky though? TLC is a freeview channel, they're also on their YouTube channel for free

Great promo. And great premiere host. And the answer to the question, how can I watch it in America? > https://chatgpt.com/s/t_69b9c8aa03f88191b2c68b05afdf8b06

Why post an AI link and not just say it airs the next day on Peacock in the US?

You realize that company just signed a contract to use their AI to help make weapons for the fascist government of the US right?

Because someone will inevitably ask "isn't there another way to see it". It answers everyone's questions in one shot. And I didn't realize there were so many AI haters here.

How did you leap from “why not just copy paste the information to save people a click” to “people hate AI”? Isn’t a more reasonable conclusion that people hate anyone that comments “I have the information, click this link to go get it because I don’t want to copy the text”?

Some people are AI haters. Most people just hate that you were lazy about it.
I mean, why bother commenting? Karma?
