They will end up selling that data to AI companies to make better fake profiles. And governments.

Sam Altman who runs OpenAI already started a project called Worldcoin a few years ago that scanned peoples' eyes in exchange for crypto, and went around Africa ~~scamming~~ signing people up. Pretty gross. https://www.npr.org/2023/08/18/1194791494/worldcoin-uses-silver-orbs-to-scan-peoples-eyeballs-in-exchange-for-crypto-token

Wait Altman was involved in Worldcoin? That's wild. I remember that being a thing.

lord_xenu_69 1 day ago +39
He's still involved here, it's the same company. They just rebranded from Worldcoin -> World
39
TMToast 1 day ago +66
The article linked in this post is saying that Tinder is partnering with World to provide this service right now, I guess you don’t need to sell them data when they are doing the scanning for you
66
Available-Guava932 23 hr ago +7
I would 100% never use this service because 1) it's associated with cryptocurrency and 2) it's associated with Scam Altman, however: It is worth mentioning that the concept behind World is actually good. First it is open source meaning in theory you can build your own iris scanner, and second it uses zero knowledge proof - as long as it is used correctly, neither companies nor governments nor the World organization can find out who you are, but nonetheless can still create a one-time proof that you are human.

29
physicsking 1 day ago +18
So true. JFC But it begs the question, on those platforms, what's the solution to prove humanity while not providing something to the AI companies that they can use? Edit: insert finger for blood sample...
18
Spork_Warrior 1 day ago +16
Three factor authentication is extra steps, but it works fairly well: 1) Something you are (bio). 2) Something you have (token). 3) Something you know (password)
16
wayoverpaid 1 day ago +12
AI can know a password, at least I'm the sense of being able to use it. Tokens online need to be converted to data somehow. My passkeys are virtual. A human can't know them, but a machine can. So all that's left is the biomarkers, which again, needs to be converted to data to be useful online. I like 3 factor to prove that I am who I say I am, sure. But proving I'm human at a distance is harder.

The usual. Meet in public places. Until we start getting convincing androids, it shouldn't be a problem. They are dating apps, right?
6
Reddit_Loves_Misinfo 1 day ago +7
They are using a Sam Altman company for this verification
7
Molteninferno 1 day ago +7
now they can copy and paste retina maps and finger prints into their AI models so they can bypass any way to verfiy you are human online for the next decade
7
LaserGuidedPolarBear 1 day ago +4
Exactly right.  If Tinder got rid of bots it would go out of business.  This is not about bots, it is about capturing biometric data.

2

Fake profiles? Probably, but I bet there's already a deal to sell it for public tracking by the government.
2
KittenPics 21 hr ago +2
Oh for sure. Really, my point was just that they will sell your data to anyone that wants to pay for it.
2
Sad-Excitement9295 17 hr ago +2
Yeah, I was just verifying your point lol Of course they would roll this out on Tinder first to early test it and make it look popular.

I do wonder in like 20 years if I will be that disheveled guy hanging out at the bus station yelling at people about the unholy technofascist beast, unable to access any of my money, get a job, or buy a home, because I refuse to participate in identity verification fascism. "I USED TO BE AN ENGINEER! THEY WILL COME FOR YOU NEXT!"

3

To be fair, and I know how ironic replying is, FaceTime is quite secure and private. Your phone has the data but Apple does not. Edit: FaceID
3
LoquaciousMendacious 1 day ago +4
That could be the case, and I'll admit it's somewhat hairsplitty since there are (few) public pictures of me out there on the internet that I don't control which I suppose could also be analyzed for facial recondition data. It's more the normalization of giving our biometrics over that I try to oppose.

Last week I got the "age verification check" here on listnook, and my initial reaction was "well it's been fun, cya later."  I'd recently deleted my main account anyway and was moving away from spending so much time on it. But jumping on a day or two ago to check the news and I noticed I'm allowed back on this account.  But I'll go bush before giving them me eyeballs.

It might prove they're human but will it prove they're the person in (most of) the profile photos? Otherwise this is just verifying that you're being scammed by a human being instead of artificial intelligence.
267
AYASOFAYA 1 day ago +91
It does scan for that. I saw someone talking about this online so grain of salt: The AI catfishers are trying to get around this by adding one weird photo at the end that looks like a strange painting but does have the eyes of the human behind the catfish, enough to satisfy the scanner even though the rest of the photos are fake.
91
IntelArtiGen 1 day ago +56
It's funny the amount of engineering they put to do the verification and how easy it's circumvented
56
gaflar 1 day ago +53
[Here's a source](https://youtu.be/rjxAYdUe8uU?si=Rae2w3ai7_QtGcT6) It's not just eyes, the scammer is straight up AI-slopping their own face onto a random image and using it to get verified. Which means if you find one of these profiles, the last photo will be the face of the guy trying to scam you (potentially on Ariana Grande's body on a billboard) which is pretty creepy. Also it doubles as a filter for people who won't fall for the scam - if you ask them about the weird photo, they know you're not a good target.
53

Lol I was looking for the link to this video to post here too, glad someone beat me to it.
10

This scan thing is complete bullshit it's just to pull data from their userbase and then most likely sell it. People who are running massive bot farms on the platform will always find ways around it. They always have.
11
GreatStateOfSadness 1 day ago +2
It's also part of a new feature that tells potential matches which of the five people in each of your photos you are instead of making them guess by swiping through six different crowd photos to try to figure it out.

I don’t think the average citizen is informed enough about data management and biometrics to be able to give consent to these corps for their data. We shouldn’t have an opt-out culture of data collection or even allow consent from users to have their data collected. It’s a government’s responsibility to protect its horribly naive and ignorant citizens but unfortunately it’s just taken advantage of
10
Timelymanner 1 day ago +5
I agree with you, but the tech bros are the new robber barons. They have there hands all over most government legislation. It also doesn’t help that most politicians who should be making laws to regulate new technology, are out of touch geriatrics. So I see where all of this is currently at, and where it’s going and I have zero hope.

Never read/seen Blade Runner so had no idea what this was. Stumbled upon this gem on the wikipedia article: >In real life, a magazine created an approximation of the test using questions and used it in jest on the candidates in the 2003 election for Mayor of San Francisco, concluding that at least half of them, including future Governor Gavin Newsom, would be classified as replicants.[69][70]

>Never read/seen Blade Runner Bro you're missing out. You need to watch Blade Runner. You can't read Blade Runner though since the book the movie is based on isn't called Blade Runner but "Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep?" and it's somewhat different from the film. Both are masterpieces in their own right but have a very different philosophical focus.

Saw a fascinating [YouTube video](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rjxAYdUe8uU&t=932s&pp=ygUTVGluZGVyIHJvbWFuY2Ugc2NhbQ%3D%3D) about romance scammers on Tinder. OP's buddy mentions that they keep matching with profiles that all conform to a weirdly similar pattern: attractive Caucasian male in his late 30s to early 40s, looking for a long term relationship, sporting a profile that seems very authentic, Verified badge, and the last photo on their profile is a piece of art that's been edited to incorporate the face of an Asian person. The art was always different, sometimes a painting, sometimes a sculpture, sometimes an oddly cropped billboard. Tinder has the option to take a short video of your face, which their algorithm will then compare to your profile pictures and grant your profile a Verified badge if the video and one of the pictures match. What OP determined was that these profiles were being operated by romance scammers in East Asia, who'd quickly try to move the conversation to WhatsApp and start talking about crypto. The photos were real, but not made by the person operating the profile; he was able to reverse image search the real Facebook and Instagram accounts they'd been taken from. That last photo was the scammer's real face and where the Verified badge was coming from (you only need 1 picture to match to get the badge), disguised in different pieces of art to make the pattern harder to spot. If the person messaging them mentioned that photo, they'd change the subject, and if they kept asking about it, they'd know that this one isn't a mark and stop messaging/block them.

____DEADPOOL_______ 1 day ago +10
I saw this video too a day or two ago and am definitely sure that Tinder got so embarrassed by his reporting that they enabled this feature to save face. Now, it's going to cost them thousands of dollars in having to scrub all the fake profiles out there and they want to avoid that for sure. It was their cost cutting that made it so only one photo would be scanned.
10
permalink_save 1 day ago +4
What worries me is if they're doing it it's because it works, so who is getting catfished on tinder, sent to whatsapp, only for it to be spam about crypto, then saying sure, that actually sounds great sign me up. Because it had to have happened a few times.

tbf, either way it's shit. either you verify yourself with some "concerning data harvesting" method, or you accept that the ecosystem is filled with bots. even though many of these companies aren't to be trusted with your data, people still complain about bots (here on Listnook as well), but if someone suggest any sort of ID verification people scream "but my privacy!!". you can't have your cake and eat it too. one has to give, either people accept verification systems, or they accept the bots.

Eyes and mouths (especially while speaking naturally) are where AI still struggles. There's also a lot of lighting problems and resolution mixing between elements in images but those are harder to detect with an algorithm accurately.
5
steelcryo 1 day ago +5
Which is why they want people to scan them. Lots of AI training data to sell. This is a company that has monetised people's loneliness. I wouldn't trust them for a second.

Funnily enough, AI is very good at detecting if an image is AI modifed.
5
adamhighdef 1 day ago +3
If it's from Gemini they encode data that survives cropping at the pixel level (its colour), likely similar done by other AI vendors to prevent training on AI generated content + trace bad stuff.
3
shamberra 1 day ago +2
Would this "encoded data" survive resizing the image (particularly shrinking) or being saved as a different format (like .bmp to .jpg)
2
IntelArtiGen 1 day ago +2
It really depends on many things, they thought about that obviously but if you distort the image enough clearly it won't work: https://deepmind.google/models/synthid/, they say: > designed to stand up to modifications like cropping, adding filters, changing frame rates, or lossy compression. There are many ways to circumvent this watermark, it's just a small protection, probably better than nothing.
2
obeytheturtles 1 day ago +2
Yes, probably. Modern "dumb" image hashing techniques already use various kinds of patched hashes which will survive standard scaling, rotation and translation. It follows that Google's fingerprinting system would be implemented to be at least as capable as these algorithms.

Have you ever seen profiles with one of the images being some AI generated artwork with modified face? Scammers use that one for face verification (using their real face), rest of the images are stolen and not related to the scammer. Tinder is so terrible with their security, and now they want scans of eyes? They should fix the basics and what they already have implemented instead of trying to gather more data about users.

Thank god I'm done with dating apps It genuinely feels like some of the larger companies work together to make bots as hard to recognize as possible. In the past you could just reverse image search pictures of people that looked fishy. Nowadays google will tell you that it can't do that. Good chance you couldn't reverse image search the mona lisa anymore due to privacy concerns.

Persistent attestation is NOT solved, and any company or service claiming they can ID the end user is straight up lying and scamming you for biometrics and pii. The big tech companies all know this, and everyone in the space knows who ever solves it will instantly ++ about a trillion dollars in valuation

So it will be completely empty for free users? I tried it once for a couple of months, then tried again years later and there still were the same profiles with the same photos.

How about doing it for every pic an not just for an identity pic masked into a profile?

Err wasn't World some scammy-seeming Blockchain shady tech company giving you 50 bucks if you joined up and scanned your iris? What happened when I blinked?

Don't fall for this. Match Group (Tinder's/Hinge's owner) are a genuinely evil company and will sell your biometrics away.

What if you don’t have eyes?

Basketseeksdog 1 day ago +1
So first it was the finger ID, then it was Face ID, and now they want Iris ID. Eventually all that data is going to be in the hands of the highest bidder

The Internet v2 is going to be a filtered instance of apps and services only available to those who can prove to be humans. Many different ways of authorization will exist, from government IDs, personal hardware IDs, facial or retinal scans, fingerprints, location based etc. Essentially Internet v2 is going to be such that every non automated entity on it needs to be a human. Certain bots and macros might be allowed for specific tasks but only through legal entities that will be responsible for its operation. Now that does not mean that such Internet wont have privacy and that governments will be able to spy upon citizens. The current internet as we know it will be 99.9% AI bots trying to mimic human interaction and scam people. Humans will eventually move from v1 into v2. The bots in v1 will exist in some sort of perpetual limbo scamming themselves and scraping the data that they think is real but is generated data from other bots. At some point servers running those bots will realize v1 is no longer profitable and will switch bots off. v2 Internet will have heavy penalties for humans who attempt to introduce AI into it. Penalties such as permanent banishment from v2. Humans will at some point use cybernetic implants that will merge AI functions with them. This is how Internet v3 gets made, to separate true humans against humans contaminated with AI neural interfaces. v4 Internet is something beyond my current imagination. I might take shrooms next week and will report if I figure out what v4 is going to be.

I got on Tinder about 2 months ago. After a week, I had 100+ likes, and every day I would swipe over and over. How many matches did I have after 2 months? Zero, none, nada, zilch. I deleted it last week.
