Titan AE f****** rules.

grahampositive Mar 26, 2026 +53
God why does it look *so good*? The cinematography is incredible

feartheoldblood90 Mar 26, 2026 +42
I know good shit is still out there if you pay attention, but by and large mainstream movies have fallen very far from when I was a kid. And I used to think that was nostalgia goggles, but I've been watching a lot of older movies (not even that old, mind you) and It's like "oh wow, look, cinematography and good lighting"
42
Djinnwrath Mar 27, 2026 +14
You used to have to make it look good *in camera*. You had only a handful of tries. Everything is shot for maximum flexibility in post now.
14
huskinater Mar 27, 2026 +3
As well as a glut of "second screen" slop where stuff is literally made with the idea no one is actually paying attention to it, so they constantly repeat themselves and have absolutely no nuance. Pisses off anyone who bothers to pay attention and bores everyone else, lose lose. Hollywood has lost the plot so much that there are only like 3 working directors people actually get excited to go to the theaters for, and Netflix would rather kill amazing animated shows before their prime just so they could instead puppet the dying husk of Stranger Things a bit longer.

TehOwn Mar 27, 2026 +2
This is what they did with Project Hail Mary and it f****** shows. I can't recommend that movie enough. I already want to go see it again.

Strange-Movie Mar 27, 2026 +5
I feel like the old man shaking a cane at kids on skateboards but cgi got too good and became too easy, then it lead to lazy cinematography and special effects that don’t feel special. I rewatched the mummy last night and it holds up better than 99% of what’s coming out today because everything feels practical and authentic, with cgi used sparingly for things that couldn’t realistically be done with practical sfx

PotatoGamerXxXx Mar 27, 2026 +6
Nah, people watch old GOOD movies. The meh and ugly ones, you don't watch or even remember.
6
ScarHand69 Mar 27, 2026 +8
Because it contains hand-drawn animation, specifically the characters. This is one of the last movies to use [traditional animation](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Traditional_animation).
8
LTSpigot Mar 26, 2026 +4
Because animation used to be about beauty instead of Pixar bean mouth jellybean people.
4
Kind-Act7051 Mar 26, 2026 +44
It really does! I haven’t seen it in ages, I’m too c**** to purchase and it’s never streaming 😫 but I think about it every few months. One day…

If there are any half-price books or used media stores around you, that's where I pick up all my nostalgia flicks. Actually, I just picked up Titan A.E. for 5.99 on DVD 👍. Ebay is also an option. I am building up a little collection of my favorite movies physically so I don't have to mess with streaming.

When Creed was at their peak popularity
21
Ihadredditbefore6786 Mar 26, 2026 +9
Can you take me higher! This movie is the reason why I know who Creed is
9
JurisDoctor Mar 26, 2026 +6
Creed doesn't have a song in the film?
6
Ihadredditbefore6786 Mar 26, 2026 +8
Correct. The song is in the move trailer Edit . Not 100 percent sure if they have a song on the soundtrack or not. But the Song ‘Higher’…. I first heard it from the move trailer
8
NoPossibility Mar 27, 2026 +5
It was not in the movie or on the soundtrack. I had that CD and it was on play for almost a whole summer.
5
Djinnwrath Mar 27, 2026 +2
FYI, a lot of times songs in a movie don't end up on the soundtrack due to licensing rights. That said, in this instance you are correct.
2
NoPossibility Mar 27, 2026 +6
No creed song in the film, just a trailer I think.
6
jerslan Mar 27, 2026 +2
Creed isn't on the soundtrack though... The song in this scene is by *The Urge*.
2
neok182 Mar 27, 2026 +5
This scene was featured heavily in the trailer and tv spots which used Creed's Higher and with it being so long ago now a lot of people think it was in the film as well when it wasn't.
5
Radi0ActivSquid Mar 27, 2026 +7
Loved "Cosmic Castaway."
7
jmonholland Mar 27, 2026 +5
Not Quite Paradise is such a banger of a song from a kind of meh band.

2
EggstaticAd8262 Mar 26, 2026 +12
Land before time. I remember watching it with my mom. The mom dies. That's a terrible scene. I wasnt old enough to see that, even with my mom there.
12
Frodojj Mar 27, 2026 +7
When I was in Elementary school, the entire school took a field trip once a year to a local theater to watch The Land Before Time. For six consecutive years (K-5), we were given a bag of chips and a jug of juice to comfort us as Littlefoot’s mom died.
7
EggstaticAd8262 Mar 27, 2026 +4
It's really a brutal scene. I had never thought of that my parents could actually die, let alone that anyone would die. It was such a foreign concept to me back then. I watched it at around the same age as you where. Naturally I rewatched that scene again yesterday. My mom died a couple of years ago. The scene is exactly as harrowing, if not more. Life is brutal.
4
idontagreewitu Mar 27, 2026 +2
I was ~30 years old the last time I watched that scene and it still made me cry.

Don Bluth is also responsible for traumatizing many childhoods. And we love him for that.

Loved this movie as a child. Havent seen it in decades though.

cadmious Mar 26, 2026 +15
I think there's some legal issues on who gets the streaming rights to it. It was on Prime for a few months last year.
15
Ell-Xyfer Mar 26, 2026 +7
It’s on Disney+ in the UK
7
cadmious Mar 26, 2026 +5
Dang, must be nice
5
SmokingCryptid Mar 26, 2026 +77
This sadly still doesn't have a blu ray release.
77
wh1pp3d Mar 26, 2026 +15
It would just be AI upscaled, this wasn't made for HD/HDR
15
NoPossibility Mar 27, 2026 +15
There’s a 1080p version if you rent/buy it. Think it’s natively like that but has just never gotten a disc release due to rights after the DB studios closed.
15
slowmotionrunner Mar 27, 2026 +11
Wasn’t made for it? It had a theatrical release. I’m sure they could go back to the source and mint an HD version.
11
FrostyD7 Mar 27, 2026 +5
Just an SDR bluray would be an improvement. Animated films suffer the least from compression, but the best quality available is ~6gb web rips, and they can for sure give us something better than that.
5
Greyshirk Mar 26, 2026 +24
Got a new movie to watch now thanks.

I loved it as an adult with a kid.
1
ducogranger Mar 26, 2026 +7
Awesome movie to watch, even as an 18 year old in 2000. I never got past how the wake angels were in the lead the whole sequence...
7
Bob_the_brewer Mar 26, 2026 +7
Such an underrated movie
7
Bob_the_brewer Mar 26, 2026 +3
And the soundtrack was a banger as well

fergi20020 Mar 26, 2026 +18
Who else saw this on opening weekend?
18
Mst3Kgf Mar 26, 2026 +10
Not many given the box office numbers.
10
fergi20020 Mar 26, 2026 +2
Hopefully it did better than Boys and Girls
2
Djinnwrath Mar 27, 2026 +4
I think I saw it slightly early. Absolute G working the theater reached over a bunch of adults to hand me a poster.
4
a_bearded_hippie Mar 26, 2026 +3
First movie I remember absolutely loving in theaters. I saw Tarzan as well, but I was immediately obsessed with Titan A.E.
3
fergi20020 Mar 26, 2026 +3
Everyone else was watching the Shaft remake that weekend.
3
Chadwiko Mar 27, 2026 +2
I was working in a movie theater on the time and I can tell you basically *no one* saw this movie on opening weekend. It was empty AF every session. Real shame too because it's a fantastic movie. I think it was marketed poorly and came out at a weird point culturally speaking.
2
23icefire Mar 26, 2026 +21
Such a good movie. Gorgeous, well acted, and I still regularly listen to all the music. It’s such a shame it doesn’t have the following it deserves!
21
Delicatesseract Mar 26, 2026 +4
Watched this movie again a few months ago and I was obsessed with this song for at least a month.

I still remember seeing this being played on one of those little tvs with the built in VCR at the video rental store as a kid. That neck breaking scene genuinely scarred me lol

I absolutely loved this movie growing up. Prolly watched it at least a hundred times over back in the vhs/dvd era. Before streaming when options were limited to what you had on hand.
2
studio_bob Mar 26, 2026 +2
Loved the book as a kid and this was the first movie I ever watched on DVD after getting a PS2 (also the first DVD player in my parent's house).

2

It got me, too. I did a double take as I was scrolling past.
1
EnjoyTheMovie_You2 Mar 27, 2026 +2
It’s actually kinda nuts that you picked literally the *only* bad part of this movie lol
2
internetlad Mar 27, 2026 +2
Titan AE is a flawed movie, but I like the vision and what they were trying to do.  It just all ended up a. . .  little awkward? But that's okay. Being a little awkward isn't all bad. It's still a fun watch.
2

This animation is so much better than anything Pixar or DreamWorks. Can't believe we let this movie fail.

Literally one of my favorite sci-fi movies since the day I saw it in theatres. Everything about it is good

Dude what the hell, i just for no reason thought of this scene like 3 hours ago
1
Mandalore108 Mar 26, 2026 +1
I loved that movie and I also loved the toy ship I had when I was a kid. Also made for a great ship to pretend I was in the Outlaw Star universe as well.
1

This was such a good movie. Too bad it did so poorly otherwise we would a huge collection of straight to DVDs for the sequel. The audio was amazing.

I really miss Don Bluth movies. But I don't miss Titan AE's soundtrack one f'n bit.

I was obsessed by this movie when it was out and you just gave me insane nostalgia chills.
1
hardy_83 Mar 27, 2026 +1
I always felt like this movie could use a remake to make the story a little more cohesive. On the flip side, any remake would probably lose the visual charm of this hand animation mixed with CG so probably best it'll never get a remake.
1
Senior_League_436 Mar 27, 2026 +1
I do love that movie
1
MisterBumpingston Mar 27, 2026 +1
I still can’t believe my friends chose to watch The 6th Day over this, just because it had Arnold in it…
1
PeneItaliano Mar 27, 2026 +1
To be fair, I too watched that movie because it had Arnold in it lol.
1
MisterBumpingston Mar 27, 2026 +1
It was more surprising as my friends and I love animation. I love Arnie, but the trailer and premise for The 6th Day was not great.
1
idontagreewitu Mar 27, 2026 +1
The 6th Day is also a pretty good movie, though.
1

What a great movie that entirely slipped my mind for... decades now. Gotta go buy it now.
1
Infinispace Mar 27, 2026 +1
I love this movie. I know it's irrational, but I do. The hide and seek scene in the ice astroids blew me away when I saw it in the theater.

Ran3737 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Holy moly, this movie is beautiful. I missed this as a kid, somehow I didn't see it... What's the best high quality to watch this today? I'd love to experience this for the first time with my scifi obsessed son.

jerslan Mar 27, 2026 +1
I ***love*** this movie and this is one of my favorite scenes in it. I also love *The Urge* and *It's My Turn to Fly* never fails to get the blood pumping. Such a banger that I think was written for the movie?
1
BaronNeutron Mar 27, 2026 +1
I havent watched it since it came out, but I recall kinda liking it
1
Machizadek Mar 27, 2026 +1
I didn’t remember this movie well. I was told by my older brother it was my favorite movie between 3-5. I rewatched recently and it hit some nostalgia and scratched some memories I cannot express
1
mamasonerdy Mar 27, 2026 +1
This is such an under rated movie. It's been in my regular movie rotation since it came out
1

Love this movie, but hate that one shot near the beginning of the ice sequence where there's a bit of stutter/slo-mo.
1
terminalxposure Mar 27, 2026 +1
So fuel is free in these neighborhoods?
1
ouralarmclock Mar 27, 2026 +1
I went to show my kid the trailer for this because I wanna watch it for him and there’s not a good one in HD, it was all pixelated junk. I’m worried there’s not a proper version of this movie in HD and it’s all been upscaled.
1
BlackHoleSurf Mar 27, 2026 +1
Can’t believe there was never a sequel

Own-Knowledge-7720 Mar 27, 2026 +1
This movie was 20 years ahead of its time.
1
SkitzTheFritz Mar 27, 2026 +1
Only scene I remember from this movie is when the kangaroo looking crewmember drops a box of tools and shes says "I'll kill you, okay? I will kill you..." before throwing a wrench. Guess I need a rewatch.
1
Odin_69 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Western animation was on a real tear in the early 2000's. Somewhere along the way the people in charge of making stuff like this happen decided to just not anymore. I love anime from japan, but I often wonder how our industry might rival theirs if it did something with staying power.
1
joe_dirty365 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Such a good movie.
1
piccolosama Mar 27, 2026 +1
Hot Take: This movie is actually pretty good.
1
shaker154 Mar 27, 2026 +1
Enjoyable, but if I remember correctly it killed its studio and lost a ton of money.
1
IcyFly5274 Mar 27, 2026 +1
That scene is pure Bluth magic. The music, the visuals... it’s such a perfect, hopeful moment in the middle of all that cosmic dread. Still gives me chills.
1
sono2351 Mar 27, 2026 +1
I'm glad that this movie seems to be getting a lot more conversation around it, as time goes on. It's a fantastic film.
1
Jackle02 Mar 27, 2026 +1
I've been playing a lot of D2R lately, and for some reason, I can't help but feel like the specters were modeled after these ghosts in this movie. They look *exactly* the same.

I went to see this the moment it opened at cinemas and I bought the DVD the moment it was released. It really is one of my favourite movies. PLANET BOB FTW!

I would rather have an animated prequel series about humanity's war with the Drej.

I still use the line “we leave, yesterday” because it confused the hell outta me. What a beautiful animated film. Miss this animation.
