I know good shit is still out there if you pay attention, but by and large mainstream movies have fallen very far from when I was a kid. And I used to think that was nostalgia goggles, but I've been watching a lot of older movies (not even that old, mind you) and It's like "oh wow, look, cinematography and good lighting"

You used to have to make it look good *in camera*. You had only a handful of tries. Everything is shot for maximum flexibility in post now.

As well as a glut of "second screen" slop where stuff is literally made with the idea no one is actually paying attention to it, so they constantly repeat themselves and have absolutely no nuance. Pisses off anyone who bothers to pay attention and bores everyone else, lose lose.
Hollywood has lost the plot so much that there are only like 3 working directors people actually get excited to go to the theaters for, and Netflix would rather kill amazing animated shows before their prime just so they could instead puppet the dying husk of Stranger Things a bit longer.

I feel like the old man shaking a cane at kids on skateboards but cgi got too good and became too easy, then it lead to lazy cinematography and special effects that don’t feel special. I rewatched the mummy last night and it holds up better than 99% of what’s coming out today because everything feels practical and authentic, with cgi used sparingly for things that couldn’t realistically be done with practical sfx

When I was in Elementary school, the entire school took a field trip once a year to a local theater to watch The Land Before Time. For six consecutive years (K-5), we were given a bag of chips and a jug of juice to comfort us as Littlefoot’s mom died.

It's really a brutal scene.
I had never thought of that my parents could actually die, let alone that anyone would die. It was such a foreign concept to me back then. I watched it at around the same age as you where.

Western animation was on a real tear in the early 2000's. Somewhere along the way the people in charge of making stuff like this happen decided to just not anymore. I love anime from japan, but I often wonder how our industry might rival theirs if it did something with staying power.

I've been playing a lot of D2R lately, and for some reason, I can't help but feel like the specters were modeled after these ghosts in this movie.
They look *exactly* the same.

I went to see this the moment it opened at cinemas and I bought the DVD the moment it was released. It really is one of my favourite movies.
PLANET BOB FTW!

This is the movie that Disney needs to make a live action version of.

I would rather have an animated prequel series about humanity's war with the Drej.

I still use the line “we leave, yesterday” because it confused the hell outta me. What a beautiful animated film. Miss this animation.
