Toho Teases 'Godzilla World' Plan to Expand and Interconnect the Japanese Godzilla Universe Like Hollywood's MonsterVerse Franchise
Godzilla is set to burst back on to theater screens in Godzilla Minus Zero in November this year. However, Toho has recently hinted that new plans are afoot for its legendary King of the Monsters. The giant kaiju will be getting “Godzilla World,” a plan to expand and interconnect the Japanese Godzilla’s universe in a similar way to what Hollywood's MonsterVerse franchise has done with its modern reboots of the American Godzilla and King Kong IPs.

So, the same thing they did in the Showa era? The monsterverse stuff has been getting sillier and sillier post Godzilla: King of the Monsters so I'd be down for a more serious monster universe. The -1 films should stay on their own though. Don't pollute that greatness

It's never going to stay serious. That's the problem with every version of Godzilla. You can tell one or two really serious films, but soon you just hit a point of escalation and just doing it to do it and it will inevitably be fanservice. The first Hesei film was "serious". Even vs Biollante was somewhat serious. Then we had vs King Ghidorah with time travel nonsense.

personally I think it immediately becomes less serious the second that Godzilla is no longer the main threat or source of danger, and the destruction and collateral damage becomes normalized. In GxK New Empire, they don’t even really stop to mention all the destruction or likely loss of life happening around them, it’s all just brushed aside because they care more about the monster set-piece. the reason people love Minus One so much is because even though Godzilla isn’t necessarily a malevolent force, the destruction and suffering he leaves behind and the human element in the story is the focus. The second it changes from that to Godzilla basically being the guardian of Earth that fights every big Kaiju threat, it becomes more “cartoonish”, for lack of a better word, it’s less about the emotional impact of the story, and more about mega Kaiju battles. Just to clarify, I don’t think the Kaiju-battle stuff or even the classic Godzilla stuff is bad, I just enjoy it for different reasons and definitely don’t have as much of an emotional connection to it.

I’m fairly sure your comment will apply to Supernova too.

I also think they lost the sense of scale with new empire. Having buildings topple over and people running. They looked massive.

Vs Ghidorah was a direct response to Vs. Biollante underperforming at the Japanese box office. Bring back Godzilla’s most famous villain, dial up the camp to make it more family friendly and that just carried forward for most of the Heisei films. Would love to see a timeline where Vs. Biollante was a hit over there.

I don't need it to be super serious, just not goofy AF.

Personally I’ve liked the Monarch TV show more than the Monsterverse’s latest movies (it had a rough start but I think it’s come together in the second season).

In my head, in my heart, there is a sequel to Shin Godzilla. It is called Godzilla vs. Biollante. Think about it

crackrabbit012 2 days ago +1
I thought that was being actively worked on?

Terminated_Entropy 2 days ago +1
I thought so too? Like it was one of the things announced this year that Shin 2 was proceeding?

No, it’s a sequel to Minus One not Shin. A sequel to Shin is still apparently on the table but as far as I can tell, it has not been announced.

Wasn’t Wikipedia article updated on it last year with the announcement?

I am as well confident you’re confusing Shin with Minus. There haven’t been any news regarding Shin besides typical media noise like some of the cast and production members expressing vague thoughts about the sequel.

It's being considered per Bloomberg

You don’t want “Shin Godzilla Minus Negative One?”

SupperTime 2 days ago +6
Just make good content. Making it dumb like Hollywood’s Godzilla is the last thing they want.

JazzmatazZ4 1 day ago +2
That's how most of the Godzilla movies are. They're mostly dumb

Minus one didn’t feel dumb. It had heart and excellent characters.

There are a few that are taken seriously, Minus One was great

Just give me a Godzilla / Gamera crossover in one of them.

I would rather see that Shin Godzilla, my favorite Godzilla movie, remain as a standalone, unconnected to Godzilla Minus One, which was also a pretty good Godzilla movie, but not matching in tone. I just prefer the weirdness of Shin Godzilla.

A couple years before Minus One came out Toho had said that their next film would be the start of a "World of Godzilla" series but they never really confirmed if Minus One was part of that until this.

Love it! One day, I hope we’ll get a proper cross-cultural collaboration between US and Japan in the Godzilla franchise.

Just send Godzilla to the strait of Hormuz. He can’t be any worse than whatever is going on there now.

why ? not everything have to be interconnected

AllTheReservations 2 days ago +17
I mean, Godzilla's literally one of the first interconnected film franchises. The original film jad loads of connected spin-off stories. This really isn't new for Godzilla

That’s what Godzilla has always been about. Wrecking cities and hanging out with Anguirus

So, Godzilla Minus One was incredible. Showed that going their own way, doing their own thing, telling stories about people through the genre of kaiju movies could have deeply beautiful results. And so they want to strap it to a merch machine that generates lowest-common-denominator schlock garbage? I guess I'm just not a movie exec. :\\
