I just watched this film for the first time and it's a great combination of clever and corny. The story and a lot of the depictions of the future are ahead of their time but the 1990ness of it all produces a lot of corny bits like that hilarious synth music playing when Arnold first meets Melina. And then there's the Arnold noises. There's so many hilarious Arnold noises.
It's one of those films where once you see it, you see its influence everywhere. One piece of media in particular that this shined a light on for me is Severance, especially the notion of a character using their own body and mind as a slave. The videotape scenes in severance are clearly inspired by this film now that I've seen it.
Hey Benny! Screeeeeeew yoooooooouuuuuuuuu!
Took me forever to get that joke, mostly because it’s hard to understand what he’s saying.

Stallone will probably be kicking himself that he didn't come up with that in the 80's. He probably has a few grunts and noises ones himself. I wonder who has the most through out their career. They've probably already calculated it on r/theydidthemath. There is a cut of Total Recall on YouTube it's just the grunts also Arnold's Japanese commercials are funny and noise filled.

The funniest thing in the premise is that he was living as a regular worker in some factory/plant and never realized that he's built like bulldozer. I guess he thought it was from breakfast cereal.
Love that movie! Especially that haunting shot that pans into the alien megastructure and settles on the imprint of a three fingered alien hand. It's great that we never get some cheese back story about the aliens. They were there once, but they are gone and no one knows what happened.

Also being part of Verhoeven's peak run doesn't hurt.
I don't think a better run in satire exists in film; Robo Cop, Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Showgirls, then Starship Troopers.
Of that run only Showgirls is mediocre, the rest are absolute classics.

Yeah I found it to be a rare situation where a film that is this far ahead of its time is also pretty rough around the edges and dated. I feel like the films that tend to be most influential story wise often also feel the least dated visually, but not this one.
OTOH some of the CGI is really, really well done.
8
WezbobMar 25, 2026

Total Recall used almost entirely practical effects. The only cgi was in the cheesy commercials and stuff like the skeleton x-ray machine.

Sorry, so many people assume practical stuff was cgi from movies back then, I felt the 'acktually' urge. My bad.

It's an all timer, Philip k d*** was a hell of a writer and most of his books that got adapted turned out great.
Arnold was in his prime here, and I think this and "the running man" might be his best performances. A lot of "auuggh" and bad jokes.
2
DaoFerretMar 25, 2026
+1
Most of his books that got adapted also got modified A LOT.
Not saying that was a good or bad thing. The story provided a good framework for the movie, but it was way before the current trend of more faithfully adapting a story became popular.
Also, still love Freejack, another good but dated SciFi movie based on a PKD story that goes in my “apocalyptic NYC” movie collection with “Escape From NY”.

aspiringalcoholicMar 25, 2026

Both of those are amazing. That whole era of dystopian 80s movies is evergreen. A scanner darkly was probably the most faithful to the book, but blade runner and total recall are two movies that benefited heavily from the Hollywood treatment.

\* Open Your Mind!
\* “You are what you do. A man is defined by his actions, not his memory”
\* “For the memory of a lifetime! Recall! recall recall!!” (That sales-chime)
\* “If I am not me, then who the hell am I?”

In high school/college, my buddies played the Total Recall drinking game. Anytime Arnold had a one-liner, the word Quaid was said, or Arnold made a funny sound, you had to drink. You also had to finish whatever was in your hand at the 3 boobed lady (timing was key). When Arnold was outside and his head was ready to explode, you basically drank that whole time.

They disappeared for a while, and you don’t get the over the top camp one liners, but that genre of Stupid Fun Action movie does feel like it’s starting to make a come back.
The Wrecking Crew with Bautista and Momoa feels like an 80s/90s buddy cop action movie like Lethal Weapon (as a recent example).
Edit: Not to mention the Deadpool movies, but those are also throwback nostalgia parodies so I’m not sure if they directly count, but their success is probably influential in the resurgence.

I watched it in theaters when I was 14 or 15 and the fact it is a parody of dumb, over-the-top action movies went completely over my head. I was insulted anything that “stupid” was made.

It took me thirty years to grow enough to understand this brilliant comedy.

It’s amazing how much a few years can make a difference. Saw this with some friends in High School and we loved it.
Recognized it as just a “stupid fun action movie”.
I think for a while, especially after The Dark Knight and the Daniel Craig James Bond movies and the Jason Bourne movies, there was a push for more grounded realism in action movies and less in the “stupid fun” style.
The first few Fast and Furious were more grounded till they swung back into the stupid fun style, and I’ve seen that style become more popular over the last few years since 2020 (maybe as Superhero movies have ebbed, but they had already opened the door back up to less grounded realism?)

It’s based on a Philip K. D*** story called “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”, which is part of why it feels so prescient even today. That dude was nutso in the best possible way for a sci- and speculative-fiction author to be.
Great flick. “Two weeks” and “open your mind, Quaid” are oft quoted in my household. Plus when I was a kid watching this movie, there was a scene with three b****, hard to beat that.

I have a steel book of this movie, it may be the crown jewel of my movie collection, alongside Once Upon a Time in Hollywood in a redbox sleeve.

It's not Arnold but if you want a movie that was weirdly ahead of its time then Demolition Man is up there too with goofy action, goofy one liners, goofy noises, and a weirdly timeless background plot that's only gotten MORE relevant today.

Schwartzenoises is just so perfect.
Thingnis though - Total Recall is a brilliant film because Arnie shows he can actually act - he manages to be confused and scared which makes the film all the better. Really rate the film.

I “quote” him suffocating without his helmet all the time. HAAA’AGHAGHGGA’’AHGHHAGH
I’m not so sure *Severance* is directly inspired by it. *Total Recall* is a loose adaptation of a Philip K. D*** story, *We Can Remember It for You Wholesale*, and *Severance* is definitely inspired by the works of PKD, and his themes of the unreliable perception and subjective nature of reality.

Once at a house party, someone found the Arnold soundboard online and we spent WAY too much time drunkenly cracking up at it. What a good memory.

Watch The Running Man. There's a part where he's getting beaten down and his Arnoldisms are AMAZING.

The part where they use claymation to make his eyes pop out and he goes "AAARRLGGGHHHH!!!" is peak Arnold for me. Such a corny yet cool effect. Classic Verhoeven stuff.

Back in the glory days of Adobe Flash there was a Total Recall soundboard we used at work with about 50 clips.
It was amazing how many conversations we had at work just using Arnold.

Total recall is probably my favourite Arnie movie, not my favourite movie starring Arnie, but the movie where Arnie is the best he can be
The terminator movies are great but Arnie have a lot to work with in terms of acting Predator is great but it's really a team movie until the final act where Arnie is mostly silent and the predator itself is such a great hook,
Total Recall is the movie that hit right at the peak of Arnie where he was still young enough to be a believable action star (and boy does this movie have action) but also he has improved enough as an actor to carry the movie on his own. He's charming and funny and charismatic, he's playing off his weaknesses as an actor because Quaid is kind of lost through most of the movie, and the action is so fun.
