This sounds like a logistical nightmare. Do people get lock out of their account if they don't comply? What if there are suddenly bank runs? Also, a lot of citizens don't have passports or their birth certificate. What happens with them?

Whatever worst thing you can imagine...yeah, probably that.

It goes beyond banking though. Everyone is setup on autopay. If a large portions of bank accounts are shutdown, all types of companies stop getting paid. Money stop flowing. The economy depends on money flowing. The literal economy will collapse within months. No joke.

I think that’s the idea. Many people do not seem to accept it but our government is compromised and I don’t mean in the “f*** the man” kinda way.

Absolutely the point of doing this. Crash the economy so the super wealthy can buy everything on sale.

Trump has as much as said that it's their plan. He wasn't praising the great depression, and the ensuing enrichment of the wealthy for no reason.
91
OtakuMecha 3 days ago +22
Yeah, they don’t want a capitalist economy anymore. The richest people have already pretty much “won” capitalism and amassed all the resources. Now they want to move to a model where they just own and control everything, they can subinfeudate whoever they still find useful, and let the “excess” just die. A return to a more feudal model that doesn’t rely on a market economy so much.

Trump dumped Covid recovery on US banks - EIDL and PPP were money dumps (hooray!) but were also administrative nightmares. I’d guess Trumps on a short lease with banks. They’re not going to agree with him shutting down their flow.

They already require proof of identity and Social Security Numbers from US citizens. They literally already have proof of citizenship from citizens. This current demand is incoherent. It’s political theater.
79
sanjosanjo 3 days ago +9
You don't need to be a citizen to get a SSN. Green card holders and people here on a work visa need them to work. But the point stands, that if you have a SSN, you are already approved to be here.
9

They're selling the data they don't have is what they want.
6
Fragment51 3 days ago +6
Those aren’t proof of citizenship. You can have a SSN and be a noncitizen, a permanent resident, or on a variety of visa statuses. This is adding a call for birth certificates (the draft EO says RealID will not count) or passports. It will cost millions just to do all that paperwork! But totally agree that Iti is playing to the base here, but will also be used as another way to police migrants, track everyone, and make things worse. It will drive an undocumented migrants into cash economies and make it harder for them to pay taxes. And it could make a lot of foreign nationals, who do lots of banking in the US, leave.

This is what happens in Japan. Every time my visa expires, my bank (and many other aspects of daily life) basically turn off access to my account until I can provide proof that I have secured another visa.
46
invariantspeed 3 days ago +58
If you read the article, Scott says driver’s licenses complaint with Real ID will not be considered valid proof of identity. That means around half of US citizens would no longer be deemed as having proof of citizenship. What you’re talking about is a little different.

Somehow I don't think Japan will use it as a repressive measure.  I can guarantee you this will be weaponised and used against US citizens. ICE killed US citizens, has anyone been sent to jail for it?!
49
shinobiken 3 days ago +18
You don't think Japan will use it as a repressive measure? That's interesting, since they have been doing so for many years in Japan. Once your visa expires, they want everything to stop working for you. No food. No housing. No work. No money. No credit card. But you can choose to self-deport at any time. Don't think that immigrants are not killed in Japan. There are cases where people who are challenging their own deportation are treated inhumanely and denied care, ultimately dying. They have been and they will continue to be killed by Japanese immigration authorities.

kyxun 3 days ago +63
This is a big one. It won't just stop at non-citizens. Eventually, it will be twisted, expanded, and used to punish any citizen who doesn't toe the line. Think about it: Are you a citizen but just don't have a passport? And the government makes it impossible to get one? Are you a citizen but used to not be? Are you a citizen but have non-citizen family members or friends? Are you a citizen by birth, but your parents aren't? Are you a dual citizen of a country the government doesn't like? Are you a US citizen that hypothetically could be a dual citizen but just never looked into it officially? Are you a citizen but in a political party or attended a protest or said something online the government considers "terrorist activity"? Etc. etc.

It pretty much is. When people get desperate they tend to turn toward two broad roads of populism. A) blame the elite, the rich, the ruling class for the scarcity. This is left leaning populism. B)blame minorities and the “useless” and say once they are gone there will be plenty for everyone. This is rightwing populism. Fascism.

They want to privatize every segment of society, including churches and government. They want the middle and working class to own absolutely nothing and have to pay for everything as they sit back and rake in the money. They want total control of society. These sick fucks are evil and demented to put it simply. Meanwhile you’ve got a chunk of Americans in this country cheering them on, wanting them and aiding them to succeed. I have a conspiracy theory that Trump is on the offense with the Pope because he wants a share of the Catholic Church’s assets and to also control them too. He’s got Zionist Jews and evangelicals already on his side, now he wants the Catholic Church to join in. He’s got an agenda for everything he targets.

The plan is whatever the Heritage Foundation puts on his desk that day. It's been laid out for everyone to see in [Project 2025](https://www.project2025.observer/en). To say he has no plan severely undercuts that there are clear objectives set forth that will objectively make the lives of working Americans harder.

They are designing it where you can be entirely shut out of every system if you are deemed a threat. Say something snarky online? Get classified as a terrorist, have all your accounts and lines of credit frozen, your driver's license revoked, your Passport blocked, etc. You can own all the guns in the world, but that won't help you if you can't buy food or pay your rent. And they're almost there, all the major sources of data are in Republican hands, they just have these last few loose ends to tie up. The total police state takeover is literally months away from being real and everywhere.

A quick search shows you need... >To prove U.S. citizenship, you can use a valid U.S. passport (current or expired), a U.S. birth certificate, a Certificate of Naturalization, or a Certificate of Citizenship. For children born abroad, a Consular Report of Birth Abroad (CRBA) serves as proof.  I suspect most Americans would have one of these but there are probably 10's of millions who don't. And god forbid you lose it. Presumably you'd need a marriage certificate if you change your name when you get married. And adoption papers if you were adopted. And what about other name changes? It seems like quite the burden on the banks.
330
Sunna420 3 days ago +151

Of course, they're trying to get birth right citizenship overturned. It will probably (fingers crossed) be unsuccessful. But if it is overturned, birth certificates wouldn't even be able to confirm citizenship. A very large number of American citizens wouldn't be able to confirm their citizenship. It won't just be brown people affected. The racism is the point of their policies, but they are so stupid at implementing them that they can't even get the racism part correct.

I mean what does a birth certificate prove? Pretty sure when I ordered an official copy of mine online I didn't require any documents to get it, just had to check a box saying that it was my own certificate I was ordering. It also lacks a picture of me. Also if Trump has his way not everyone born in America will be citizens. Therefore the birth certificate could no longer be used to absolutely prove you are a citizen.
18
rabid_briefcase 3 days ago +10
Yup, if Trump gets his way to revoke birthright citizenship, birth certificates also wouldn't be enough and most people don't have the paperwork to prove it. People would need to prove the citizenship status of their parents *at the time of their birth*. That order makes no provision for orphans or foundlings (baby abandoned at a hospital / fire station / church / etc, and all kinds of nonsense around unmarried couples or questionable / unknown fathers.
10
wonkifier 3 days ago +54
Which really annoys me because I went through the hoops to get my birth certificate from across the country and used that for my RealId. But the DMV here doesn't apparently record the records used, so can't just flag the RealId as "demonstrated citizen". Gotta jump through extra hoops again at some point.

So what's the accepted documentation going to be? Is a passport good despite it being more expensive and easier to get, or is it going to be some bullshit "Trump Proof of Patriotism" card that's going to cost $500 dollars? It's literally easier to purchase a gun than get an REAL ID.
90
fall3nang3l 3 days ago +30
Easier and faster. At my local DMV, while 4 staff sit around and chat and play on their phones because they're just there to print photo IDs, the other 2-3 staff process everything else and take 15-30 minutes per permit, Real ID, and everything else. Average wait time is 1.5-2 hours for anything that's not a simple photo card (updated license) process. I can walk into any place that sells guns and walk out in 20-30 minutes with one and only need a driver's license to process unlike getting a Real ID and what that requires.
30
somethingsomethingbe 3 days ago +18
If everyone is required to get a passport, I don't expect this government to adequately step up and hire the staff needed for the massive increase in demand.
18
True_Window_9389 3 days ago +15
That’s always been the case. People opposed to showing ID for things like voting aren’t against it because of some anti-ID principle, it’s because IDs can be hard for certain people to obtain and it’s an end-around for disenfranchisement and denying services and rights. If IDs were easier and cheaper, that opposition would go away.
15
fall3nang3l 3 days ago +6
The barrier to entry is absolutely by design when it comes to voting and that's where folks need to nut up and start pushing back. I can't just register to vote for the hell of it on a whim and show up saying I'm John the Baptist and it's all said and done. ID cards and licenses cost money. They require time and transportation to go to where you can get them. IDs should be free to everyone. Why in the holy hell do you have to pay a fee and produce document after document to get a piece of plastic saying you are who you are? Assuming you can even get to the only places that issue those IDs?
6
DonarArminSkyrari 3 days ago +10
Literally what else could be considered? A DMV ID is the gold standard for whats accepted in the US for ID (obv passports are too, but they are almost only used by tourists or people who lost their DMV ID and thus recieve a lot more scrutiny and difficulty because outside of an airport the average person asking for ID has no idea what they are looking at when handed a passport, hinestly I'd have zero idea what i was looking at if i hadn't used mine as ID for a decade and even then it takes way longer to read than an ID card). A 'Real' ID is just a DMV ID with extra steps. And the other 'legal documents' i own dont have my photo on them. Literally just nonsense.

I still don't get this, banks are already required to collect this data. Pretty sure it is required by KYC laws. So is this EO trying to expand that? I doubt that can happen without something like the save act passing Congress. For context, I hate any idea of this, but this feels similar to the 10% interest rate EO that did nothing and was forgotten

It's a nothingburger of executive overreach that will be slapped down. We're looking at a dead political movement floundering about for some last gasp of 'hurting the right people'.

He doesn't want banks to check data, he wants them to collect the data and give it to him.
21
SoftResponsibility18 3 days ago +13
Ya but that isn't happening with an EO. They need a law for that. Just like how banks had to lower interest rates to 10% by what 01/20/26 or something like that??? Shocker still way over 10%. I hate everything he does but this feels like a scare tactic rather than something to get mad about. Getting mad is the fear he wants to push. He wanted the same thing out of the census... If he cares that much have the balls to push it through Congress.

It's not required to prove citizenship or legal status to open a US bank account. Foreign nationals are not prohibited from utilizing our banking system. Literally anyone can apply for an ITIN and use that (along with other documentary evidence) to open a US bank account. Invalidating driver's licenses/state IDs as acceptable ID alone will entirely upend existing KYC workflows. Most automated verification processes are built around collecting government-issued photo ID and confirming validity against government repositories. Those processes are incompatible with documentary evidence such as birth certificates or social security cards, which are typically subject to a manual review process that is, frankly, less robust and more subjective.

>Bessent has previously said that Real IDs would not be considered legal documents under this new executive order. The more I read about Real ID, the more pointless it seems. If it won’t even be accepted, why have it at all?

Same. I used to think Real ID actually meant something. It wasn’t until this citizenship stuff started that I was like great, spend even more money on making sure you have everything else.

I’m so f****** confused Politicians in my state have been pushing REAL ID so hard. It’s the future! It’s secure! It can’t be reliably copied! So why the f*** can’t it be used?

>But that doesn’t satisfy Bessent. “Why can unknown foreign nationals come and open a bank account?” he said at the CNBC event. “Our bank executives job is to know your customer. How do you know your customer if you don’t know if they have legal or illegal status, whether they are a U.S. citizen or green card holder?” WTF is an "unknown foreign national"? Why should the banks care about a client's legal status, especially if said status is often in flux? If the banks only require a valid SSN or ITIN along with other identifying documents, let them make that determination. All this sycophant wants to do is make life incredibly hard for immigrants, legal or otherwise. So much for MAGA's lies that the Trump regime wants to protect legal immigration.

Banker here- no you don't have to be a US citizen to have an account. But also if it's your first bank account with said bank you do have to prove your identity with forms of ID. So this is already a thing and very highly tracked and enforced.

So what does this mean for your average American? I have had my checking account for 20 years. Am I going to have to bring my birth certificate to my local branch? And why did we all get Real-ID and provide additional documentation of Citizenship to our respective BMVs if it wasn’t applicable to the citizenship question?

We are rapidly losing the ability to call ourselves the “free world”. We’ve all seen the WW2 and Cold War movies where the Nazis or Communists randomly stop people while holding out their hands and say “papers?” That’s what Trump is rapidly turning this country into, where we can be stopped and asked for proof of citizenship. It won’t be a stretch for him to require non-citizens to wear the equivalent of a yellow Star of David on their clothes.

Well dipstick Bessent, this flies in the face of presumption of innocence and due process. Why do I have to prove I'm a us citizen? It is assumed I am. It is your job to prove I'm not; not by me handing over my "papers" either. This is not east Germany and you are not Hitler. Oops. Did I get that last part wrong. There is NOTHING in the constitution that gives the president the authority to craft or enforce such an order. And if you're going to be a whiney little b**** about it, I will take my 6 figures out of the bank and put it elsewhere. I was born and raised Texan, and I'll be dammed if I let some "Trump-nosed" punk tell me I've got to prove who I am. Trump is insane.

Ok, so I'm no economist, but wouldn't that result in fewer people using the banks? Wouldn't that take money *out* of the economy in a way? I mean if it's in mattresses at homes, it's not available to the banks for loans, investments, etc. Would that be bad for the economy? Like I said, I'm not economist.

So my bank, which I have only dealt with online for more than a decade, is going to send me a text asking if I’m a citizen, and me, born in Estonia last Thursday, will click “yes.” Or they will ask for my passport number, which is a clear violation of about six different laws. Good luck with that.
