Yeah, that was pointed out as a major problem with the whole "The Kurds are joining the fight" thing two weeks ago
397
cheetuzz Mar 29, 2026 +92
why does Turkiye care if Kurds attack Iran? Is Turkiye aligned with Iran?
92
caiaphas8 Mar 29, 2026 +338
Turkey is aligned against the Kurds. There is a large minority of Kurds concentrated in south east turkey who have a history of fighting turkey for autonomy and independence. Any Kurds trained and armed is a threat to turkey, even if initially they are only fighting Iran
338
scud121 Mar 29, 2026 +61
I was on exercise in turkey in 1997 or thereabouts when we got the news that turkey had deployed 50k troops into Iraq to attack Kurds in iraqi-kurdistsn. That caused some twitchiness I can tell you.
61
Thurak0 Mar 30, 2026 +33
> Any Kurds trained and armed is a threat to turkey But it is a bit more indirect: If there is ever an independent Kurdish state, Turkey is afraid "their" Kurds would try to join that state. And that is something Turkey would really hate.
33
AceJokerZ Mar 29, 2026 +106
Turkey just wants all the ethnic groups around them to hate them. Armenians, Greeks, Kurds.
106
Malbethion Mar 29, 2026 +105
Türkiye did their best to have no Armenians hating them.
105
AHolyPigeon Mar 29, 2026 +98
No the Turks have nothing against the Kurds! Just the ones that carry out terrorist attacks. They are nothing like Israel. They wouldn't persecute and entire group for the actions of a few. Hell there's even Kurds living peacefully in turkey. -every Turkish person ever. F*** turkey.
98
Dexterus Mar 29, 2026 +29
They've hit all Kurdish groups that start to get organized into militias. In Iraq, Syria and now possibly Iran. Afraid they'll make their way into PKK eventually I suppose.
29
Slahinki Mar 29, 2026 +39
Turkey doesn't want the Kurds to have a sovereign state of their own. If the US wins against Iran with Kurdish help, they might get land out of it, and that's against Turkish interests. Wherever there have been Kurdish separatists/rebels fighting, Turkey has been there to bomb them, even when the Kurds are notionally on Turkey's "side", like in Syria.
39
Common-Method2202 Mar 29, 2026 +11
There’s even a bigger problem where it’s a very tiny Kurdish land in Iran, making it not worth it at all to risk their positions in Iraq which is much larger in terms of Kurdish populace. The only threat to Iran is the huge Azeri population
11
LARPerator Mar 29, 2026 +13
Because of what the war on Iran has turned into. Iran knows this is sink or swim. Israel and the USA don't want to *defeat* Iran, they want to *destroy* Iran. What comes out the other side is extremely unclear if they win, but I could imagine that Israel and the USA would like to see Iran balkanized to prevent another similarly powerful successor state. An independent Kurdistan could form out of that. Currently no such country exists, but it's been a dream for a long time. If it is formed out of the ashes of Iran, then it will ramp up pressure on neighbouring countries with Kurdish populations. Right now they're mostly dissidents because there's not really a viable alternative state for them to join. But if there suddenly is one, then it could kick off a couple civil wars as the Kurdish minorities in Turkiye, Syria, and Iraq all try to move the borders so they're part of the new Kurdistan as well.
13
Kalsto6 Mar 30, 2026 +4
Balkanizing would only have the same situation happen again because Iran's oil is concentrated near the Iraqi border and each end would get access to the sea. I can't even begin to think how that division would work without being drawn into war at some point.
4
Extreme_Put_913 Mar 30, 2026 +8
There is an organization called the KCK - Kurdistan Communities Union, they have branches in Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Iran. Turkey has been fighting an insurgency war with the Turkish branch the PKK since the 60's. They consider the PKK and through connection the KCK as a terrorist organization. For example the reason why Turkey attacked the SDF in Syria is because initially it was the YPG which is the military wing of the Syrian Branch of the KCK called the PYD. PKK commanders moved out of Turkey and joined the YPG to aid in their fight in Syria, which caused pressure from the US for them to rebrand to the SDF because they were technically supporting an organization which had the same commanders of an organization they deemed a terrorist organization. Now why does Turkey care if Kurds attack Iran? Because it's most likely going to mainly be headed by the Iranian branch called the PJAK. In the minds of Turkey PKK = YPG/SDF = PJAK. If it were the Peshmerga (The main group in Northern Iraq) which Turkey has good relations with I don't think Turkey would have as strong of a stance. But If its KCK related Turkey will get involved and from what I read it's the PJAK who are mainly preparing, along with non-KCK affiliated minor organizations. Edit: Turkey is also not allies with Iran but they are not enemies. Think of their situation as a stand off where they don't want to poke each other. Not enemies, but not friends.

They'll wait to see who's the worst off. They've got historical 'claims' to Eastern Russia, Kashmir and obviously Taiwan. So realistically, they won't commit until someone is exhausted and on the brink of collapse if it's in their interest.

It feels like these intricate side conflict, such as between Turkey and the Kurds, seems to draw parallels to World War 1 and all of their defense agreements. It’s pulling all of these different factions into the conflict solely due to their past/ongoing rifts. Even then if you consider all of the new weapons that we haven’t had in the past conflicts and that are just beginning to completely change warfare because robotics will move forward quickly forward. This seems like history repeating itself and a powder keg waiting to really go off. I recommend reading Guns of August. It’s a great book about the lead up to and into World War I.

wrosecrans Mar 29, 2026 +21
Russia keeps doing dangerous hostile actions that have been handled as just below the threshold for act of war to a lot of those European allies you are talking about being outside the war. And Europe has started boarding Russian ships. The degree to which "Europe" is not at war right now is razor thin. "There is a major war in Europe" could turn into "Europe is at war" with not many additional steps.

That's been their MO for decades. It's smart. Stay out and grow. That's what the US did during the early 1900s world wars that turned us into a superpower.
40
Bold814 Mar 29, 2026 +5
? The USA because a superpower after WW2 which they were involved in. Them joining in WW1 also helped build up economic and military capabilities. The wars not being on their home front was a big reason for this as well, of course.
5
SleepingCod Mar 29, 2026 +9
They were primarily manufacturs during both wars. Their minimal involvement did not make them rich. By the end of WW2 they controlled 70% of the worlds gold.

I mean this was a pretty obvious thing any turkish government would have done they can't exactly allow an independent kurdish country on their door step especially after decades of dealing with kurdish separatist.
155
Blazin_Rathalos Mar 29, 2026 +84
>they can't exactly allow an independent kurdish country on their door step They *could*, if they had less of a history of awful imperialism (or handled it better afterwards).
84
CucumberWisdom Mar 29, 2026 +64
No country allows separatists. Literally every country on earth would react this way.
64
Blazin_Rathalos Mar 29, 2026 +29
Being completely unable to accept an independent country of a certain people on your border because you also have those people inside your country? Sounds like you've never heard of Ireland. Or Switzerland. Or half a dozen other European countries that have minority populations of neighbouring nations. So no, not "literally every country on earth", just imperialist and/or paranoid ones.
29
YokoDk Mar 29, 2026 +37
I mean the Troubles happened with Ireland. Then you have the collapse of Yugoslavia. Most European conflicts are literally about this. As for Turkey they are worried about the active group of militant separatist in the borders having the assistance of an independent nation which is literally the one the separatist want to join. Basically no country wants to get smaller heck he US is a perfect example it's literally a crime for a state to try to leave.

Canada and the UK have allowed for independence referendums for the Quebecois and Scottish respectively to occur in modern times. The Bloc Quebecois even have federal parliamentary representation since the 90s. Similarly the SNP has both held governing power in Scotland and have representation in Westminster.
8
rookie-mistake Mar 29, 2026 +9
and, shockingly, when you don't treat them so shittily that trying to build an independent country seems like a better alternative, those referendums tend to fail honestly it's so embarrassing for us as a species how many problems would literally just be solved by treating people like people
9
Blackstone01 Mar 29, 2026 +1
Every country on earth would react this way if their neighbor had an issue with separatists? News to me. These are Kurdish separatists in Iran.
1
Secret_g_nome Mar 29, 2026 +15
However they also fight a constant low level insurgency war against the Kurds in Turkyie. Arming the Kurds to fight Iran will bring arms to their neighbours in Syria, Turkyie and Iraq that will cause more war and destabilization. Probably after the resolution of this current conflict, but who knows? So Turkyie sees arming the Kurds or empowering them, as a major security concern as the Kurds operate in their territory.
15
Dexterus Mar 29, 2026 +3
Iraqi kurds are somewhat not an issue as they are under organized civilian leadership under Iraqi autonomy. Basicaly seems once there's someone they can talk into reigning military groups in, they'd rather use that string.
3
Khamvom Mar 29, 2026 +57
Turkey and Erdogan are heavily anti-Kurdish, the Kurd’s gaining any type of power or leverage in the region is a big no no for them. For example, The Kurds in Syria (SDF) were NATO’s biggest partner in the fight against ISIS during their peak. Turkey didn’t like this and conducted strikes against the SDF, seized their territory, and sponsored + supported groups to oppose them. A Kurdish group/state on their border was quite literally a bigger threat than ISIS.
57
Ecmelt Mar 29, 2026 +15
>Turkey and Erdogan are heavily anti-Kurdish, the Kurd’s gaining any type of power or leverage in the region is a big no no for them. Explain how KRI and Turkey have trade deals. >The Kurds in Syria (SDF) were NATO’s biggest partner in the fight against ISIS during their peak. And why try to paint SDF as some kind of heroic group? They made a deal with USA, to fight ISIS they gained A LOT of power, money, ammo, weapons, vehicles, increased their drug trafficking operations and were allowed to occupy a big portion of Syria, even places without a Kurdish majority. They benefited heavily from this deal. USA abandoning them was just them being not useful any longer or rather, USA found someone more useful. So they were not fighting ISIS out of their goodness and the biggest blow to them was done by USA by simply abandoning them, rather than by Turkey. >A Kurdish group/state on their border was quite literally a bigger threat than ISIS. Again, explain how KRI exists. What you mean is: Turkey doesn't want a separatist group that lays claim on Turkish territory to exist. Crazy! Which country are you from that loves it when some militia lays claim on your territory? I am curious. Also crazy that Turkey doesn't want its "NATO allies" to arm these separatist groups for their own benefits. Hmmm. TL;DR: Classic listnookor that uses "the Kurds" and "Kurdish" words the moment the conversation is about separatist groups as if all Kurds are part of them.

The KRI exists b/c they’re based in Iraq and fall within Iraq’s political system. Turkey *tolerates* them since they’re a manageable factor that can be controlled and mitigated. You’re free to browse through my comment history about the Kurds (they’re not hidden, unlike yours) and how I differentiate between them.

NATO has nothing to do with this conflict, as it is not in the North Atlantic Treaty area.

Being a NATO country doesn't mean you have to greenlight someone elses bullshit.

Arming the kurds and getting them involved in the fight goes against turkeys national interests. Not surprising that Americans expect absolute obedience from their vassals though.
15
Realistic_Swan_6801 Mar 29, 2026 +20
Turkey is not our vassal, they are barely even our ally these days, we try to avoid overly upsetting them and they remain nominally aligned and cooperate through nato.

Realistic_Swan_6801 Mar 29, 2026 -10
Turkey has been an ally in name only for a long time. There’s just no mechanism to expel them and they are important enough to have to deal with.

sovietarmyfan Mar 29, 2026 +18
What clusterf. So we have the biggest NATO member maybe going for a ground invasion and perhaps arming and using the Kurds for this purpose. And then another NATO member has vowed to attack those kurds.
18
LastHomeros Mar 29, 2026 +19
How would you feel in an alternate scenario where Turkey was arming and actively supporting Al-Qaeda before and after 9/11? Yes, this is exactly what the US does. They have been supporting and arming the PKK, which is recognized as a terrorist organization and has caused the loss of 40.000 civilians' lives in Turkey.

Well Trump wanted NATO to get involved and Turkey is a NATO country...its just that they are likely to help Iran, cause they hate the Kurds.

Turkey, which will loudly decry Israel and the lack of a Palestinian state while simultaneously preventing even the thought of a Kurdistan appearing in a country next door. To the point of literally invading that country before letting a Kurdistan appear. Wild.

LilyBelle504 Mar 29, 2026 +6
Don't forget the ongoing illegal Turkish occupation of Northern Cyprus for the past 50 years. Oh, and 10,000s of Turkish settlers who migrated there via the Turkish government- to change it's demographics of course. Sounds awfully... familiar.

deja-vu_gameover Mar 29, 2026 +12
It’s because ~15 million Kurds live in Turkey, that’s the highest Kurdish population than any other country in the region. Kurdistan wouldn’t just appear “next door” it’s very likely Kurdish groups in Turkey would increase activity trying to break off the Kurdish populated region in Turkey to join said new country.
12
nodanator Mar 29, 2026 +30
Yes. I know. Let me be more precise: Turkey will decry Israel not ceding lands to create a Palestine while 1) not ceding lands of its own for Kurdistan, 2) not even letting a country next door have a Kurdistan. Wild.

Why does Turkey hate the Kurdish?
7
Montaigne314 Mar 29, 2026 +38
Political reasons and power maintenance  If the Kurds of one country, whether Iran or Syria or wherever gain independence, the Kurds of Turkey may be strengthened and push for their own autonomy It's almost always about maintaining territorial sovereignty and/or the resources within those regions My 2 cents

Impressive-Joke-3119 Mar 29, 2026 +31
Kurds are a large minority in Iran, Iraq, Syria, and Turkey and they want an independent state at the cost of all those countries. Typical British and French lines drawn causing conflict to this day as a means of controlling said countries. The U.S. has used and abused them every time Iran, Iraq, Syria and Turkey have acted up.
31
Realistic_Swan_6801 Mar 29, 2026 +13
Modern Turkey built itself by forcibly assimilating or ethnically cleansing any disagreements away, the Kurds are a cultural holdout that resist that and want their own state.
13
otisticRetard52 Mar 29, 2026 +9
They dont, ironically the biggest kurdish army is the turkish if we only consider the ethnicity. Turkey battled kurdish seperatist and like only country wants stability which a kurdish "state" would undermine

Kurds are clever militias, damn sure they won’t join this war just because US, Israel wants it. And IRGC won’t be a threat for Iranian Kurds. Here Erdogan just wants a reason to suppress Turkish Kurds, nothing else.
3
jphamlore Mar 29, 2026 +3
I thought Erdogan cut a deal recently with the PKK, because he wants another term. Although I'm not sure by what mechanism Erdogan can ever be forced out of office.
3
Sweet_Bridge_3001 Mar 29, 2026 +3
PKK agreed to stop armed struggle through the pleas of their founder who is imprisoned in Turkey. We dont know what they were given, but YPG losing all footing in Syria probably didnt help them, PKK historically used Syria as a base of operations. Also, Erdoğan can very easily be forced out when he loses an election, he just didnt lose one yet.
3
moreesq Mar 29, 2026 +2
Turkey and the Kurds have been at each other for years. Perhaps turkey is worried that if the kurds take advantage a weakened Iran, they will capture weapons, gain a propaganda victory, and increase their strength generally. Why else would turkey side with Iran against the Kurds?
2
gooberfishie Mar 30, 2026 +2
That's great news for NATO. If turkey joins willingly before a major attack that triggers article 5, that means article 5 is off the table if they're hit later on. The last thing NATO needs is to get dragged into a forever war on the side of Yankistan.
