I did too. I remember I took my littler brother n cousin to go see it on Christmas Day of that year. Good times.

I watched it like 4 or 5 times in theaters. The only movie I have ever done that for (most I'd watch a movie in theatres is twice if I went a 2nd time with a friend who hadn't seen it yet). Is it the best movie ever? No. But it was entertaining beginning to end and the Daft Punk soundtrack made every moment enjoyable.

It was one of the few 3d craze movies of the time I thought really made good use of the technology in theaters. So glad I got to see it in person that way as it almost certainly won’t be shown similarly again.

The production design in this movie was a decade ahead of its time. Every frame of the Grid still looks cleaner than most CGI-heavy movies coming out today

I don't think it's fair to compare Tron with other movies, the nature of its "computer world" setting kinda gives it a pass on looking CGI. Also the constant darkness allows to hide a lot of imperfections.

I really hate how Ares set up the different servers as being like their own cities in the grid and then just … didn’t explore that beyond the first action sequence. It essentially doesn’t play into the plot in any meaningful way beyond Ares getting the info McGuffin.

I’m actually watching Ares right now (first watch, near the end) and the feeling I get is someone had a decent idea for a movie that was commentary on AI and its issues, and they slapped it onto Tron without keeping in mind the spirit of Tron. The Tron world is basically just window dressing.
It’s not exactly bad, it’s just…not Tron.

Trent Reznor's musci did well in Ares, but the music felt like an add on. Daft Punk's music setup a lot of the scenes and just made the movie.

Still have a 1080p 3D projector and this film looks amazing with the glasses on. Only maybe eight or ten films ever truly nailed a 3D experience, and this one's probably the best one that isnt fully animation.

F****** love this movie. And loved Uprising, too. It's still a damn shame that Disney just yanked the plug out of all of their Tron plans so fast back then only to re-start it with the half-assed Ares. Which went nowhere.

I loved this movie and Oblivion. Especially the soundtracks from Daft Punk and M83 respectively. I never looked into it but I assumed Joseph Kosinski chose the composers and it made me a big fan.
Im happy for his succes in F1 and Top Gun but I havent seen either. For the fans of Tron and maybe even Oblivion, do Joseph's latest movies compare?

F****** love this movie.
Not filmed with IMAX cameras. It was (mostly) shot on digital cameras that had a maximum resolution of 1920x1080. The stereoscopic digital cameras were fixed to 1920x1080 and not 2K DCI (2048x1080) like a lot of people think. These were new digital cameras by Sony for 3D filming.
The 4K bluray is a massive upscale from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160 and it looks f****** great with the HDR. Some scenes do look like they didn't clean it up very much because you can see chroma noise around the pure white suits. A lot of the grain matches the original bluray release so they took care not to clean up the image or use ai to remaster. They also didn't blow the highlights so it has less bloom than bluray. You can see the light source in the 4K version. The light rings on their suits are more visible compared to the bluray where it's just a bright blur of light.
I really love the visual effects in this compared to Ares and other major blockbusters out today.
Time for another rewatch. it's been about a month.
When I used to have my VR headset all set up, I would watch this in a virtual theater in 3D all the time.

If you look real hard, someone found the open-matte version of this movie. Then they AI-upscaled it (as the original was only in 1080p).

1
MrPokeGamerMar 29, 2026
+2
Kind of yeah. Though the only full version I found had a Starz logo appearing periodically. There however is a version out there that has select imax scenes
2
Raider_ScumMar 29, 2026
+1
Yes, it's basically the Imax version.
Some movies are shot in a "full screen" film format. Then they place "mattes" over the film, which adds black bars to the top and bottom of the film. This is to create the widescreen format that ends up in cinemas. For many movies, such as Tron, only the matte version of the film was ever released on DVD/Bluray/Streaming - BUT, the "open-matte" version of the film still exists out there somewhere, as that is how the original film was shot. Disney has refused to release this open-matte version of Tron Legacy, though it certainly exists in their "Vault".
For Tron Legacy, someone managed to get a copy of the "open-matte" version of the original film somehow, and they released it on the internet. So while all of the legal ways to watch this movie are the "Widescreen" edition, there does exist an "Imax", or "Open Matte" edition, if you know where to look.
