I'm pretty sure the alternate to this choice was to send someone there to take the pride flag down like every day

This isnt just about any random pride flag. This is THE pride flag at STONEWALL. Aka, home of the first Pride and the place where the spark to take back our freedoms and rights to live began. The fact that there was even a debate for taking it down is a travesty beyond words, and though its a win to keep it up I fear that they are simply shifting off to an even worse thing to do to us.

1
PM_me_Henrika 4 days ago +1
Shifting implies now that their focus is not on the flag they get to start doing the ‘worse’ things now. It’s future continuous, indicating a possibly bleak future because tomorrow itight be worse. Simultaneous means those ‘worse’ things are not a hypothesis. It has been happening. Past continuous, indicating that not just tomorrow, it is bleak today, it was bleak yesterday, and if we don’t do something about it will most definitely continue to be shite.

lol, American exceptionalism never fails to amaze me. You know stonewall happened because the day before, Canada, that little country up north, decriminalized homosexuality. Edit: not a single comment argued against the reality of my claim. Plenty of attacks against me, but the truth remains. Stonewall happened because Canada
-69
N7_Turtle 5 days ago +48
This is an article about US governmental action, which was going to effect a US historical site, and the comment you replied to is specifically citing a true fact about the LGBTQ movement in the UNITED STATES. This isn’t American exceptionalism this is you trying to hop up on a high horse about shit that no one was talking about and has zero to do with the topic at hand. If anything this is you trying out some Canadian exceptionalism.
48
coporate 5 days ago -57
Oh, right, it just happened, out of the blue, after years of just bribing off cops and them leaving… mmhmm, it magically happened, that night, the night after decriminalization in Canada.
-57
N7_Turtle 5 days ago +32
Point to where I said otherwise or argue with a wall. Who the f*** cares! What are you hoping to accomplish here? What in that miserable little head of yours made you hop on a post about a political victory for people you are supposedly in community with and start up with the “um well actually” bullshit. What in that comment made you think they were trying to denegrate the Canadian LGBTQ civil rights movement, instead of just celebrating a victory about the place that objectively fueled the lgtbq rights movement in the United States. Do you need a history of every civil rights moment that led up to Stonewall for you to understand the point of the comment. You’re being an ass and a terrible member of the community right now. Do you care about rights or being right.
32
coporate 5 days ago -41
The truth matters? Mythologizing lies is not a good thing? We should accept history on factual grounds rather than ideological ones?
-41
N7_Turtle 5 days ago +24
Of course it does, but that has f*** all to do with the topic at hand as was already said. Stonewall was the spark that bought LGBTQ rights to the forefront in the United States. The event itself was the spark, the average American was not checking for lgbtq political victories in Canada. Activist certainly were and that of course affected their actions that evening. Tell me would you need the entire history of the Montgomery bus boycott and how it was carefully planned and setup, if someone posted a similar comment about the saving of a Rosa Parks memorial? Again you are not helping, you aren’t endearing anyone to anything and you are being a dickhead to people simply celebrating a win in a dark moment in their history. Be better.
24
coporate 5 days ago -1
What win? They won because American people saw someone else doing something about their plight and it gave them the courage to stand up for themselves. Now they act like pride has, is and was always theirs. It’s pathetic. It’s like how Americans act like they won ww2 or ended slaverery, revisionist history and American exceptionalism. That’s not a win, that’s a lie you tell yourself because you don’t want to admit you were on the wrong side until it flipped. The spark that created stonewall was an injustice to every lgbt person, and it was Klippert who suffered, he was the one jailed, forced to testify about his “gross indecency” to save himself from wrongful conviction and imprisonment. You want to mythologize pride, at least give proper credit.
-1
N7_Turtle 5 days ago +15
God you’re dense. I’m clearly talking about the systematic demolishing of LGBTQ rights happening in this country right now. Trans folks are being told to report to the state, court challenges on gay marriage are being put on the docket, trans participation in sports basically dead and they’re already talking about bathroom bills. Them backing the hell off a historic queer piece of iconography is a goddamn win. You are acting like someone who has never actually interacted with activism on any level outside of that keyboard of yours. Do you think telling people that they’re a bunch of ignorant nationalists while their rights are getting stripped is f****** praxis? Do you think that telling already marginalized people that they shouldn’t celebrate a glimmer of f****** hope in the darkness without an encyclopedia to back them up makes you a good person? I promise you the people you’re pretending to stand up for would not back you. This is not how community building, teaching or activism work in anyway. Every civil right in this globally has come with blood attached to it. Everyone revolutionary takes lessons from those that came before and everyone knows that. The tide turning, progress happening even if it comes with a majority of people kicking and screaming is still a win. As a black American the ending of slavery absolutely was absolutely a win. My grandparents who grew up in the Jim Crow south, and were local activists in the push for the Civil Rights act would tell you that even though they suffered it was a win. The fact that today I can now do further activism in my own community is a win built off the wins of others. None of them would be upset by the progress made or the invocation of their victories when facing similar or recurring injustices. You’re not a hero, a historian or an activist you’re just an a******.

Then stop lying to yourself and recognize that life means more than your skin colour, sexual orientation, preferences, and opportunities. Truth matters more than any of that. So fight for people to be free of government in their bedroom, doctors office, and orifices. I’m a guy on the internet, pointing you to how legislation freed gay Canadians and your response has been… stfu. I don’t know enough in your world where to look, but the systemic breakdown of medical rights is not a small problem, it’s something I’m working on where I live. I’m more than happy to help you make cogent arguments about supporting lgbt people.

Case and point, they weren’t trans (self admitted) and arrived at the conflict hours after it had began, more mythologizing. Seriously, just read the wiki on Martha p.
-22
Shydale-for-House 5 days ago +19
Regardless it had nothing to do with Canada. It was a spontaneous riot that lasted days because the police had a f***** for raiding the bar and the queer populace could take it no longer and finally fought back. Don't you *dare* try and gloss over our history.
19
coporate 5 days ago -3
Yeah to people like you the truth is “regardless”, but ignore lgbt history, ignore the pain the pain and suffering of lgbt people, because “regardless”. It’s “spontaneous” that a bunch of lgbt were out celebrating the rights Canada had just granted gay people. A “spontaneous” crackdown when they’d normally take bribes… so spontaneous! They didn’t take it because the world around them was changing and they didn’t have to take it anymore, and the proof was the decriminalization in Canada. Canada’s decriminalization of homosexuality, the day before, was the catalyst for stonewall. Americans have such huge egos. Also, disregard Martha’s testimony that she arrived hours after the riots began, and ignore the hundreds of other rioters, and ignore the fact they never called themselves transgender. So pathetic.
-3
SatansCornflakes 5 days ago +22
Can find no evidence that they were gathered at Stonewall to celebrate the gay rights victory of a different country. And even if they were: it was a gay bar… the police would’ve found queer people to harass there whether Canada passed that law or not.

Hey, im not going to insult you or anything. As a gay man, I’ve dealt with bullying all my life. I love you man, I hope you learned something today. If not, I recommend examining how the progressive pride flag is copyrighted and profited from, how the conservative lgbt wish to censor us, and it begins with 4 simple words. 4 simple words you think we should freely throw around. I’m not going to stop fighting for trans rights, or lgbt rights, or our history. So keep tossing those 4 words my way.

The fact that the White House is directly and exclusively involved in so many areas of the federal government is alarming all on its own. The newsworthiness is because so many decisions are being made from a single opaque source; with no rhyme or reason. **(See also, SCOTUS unsigned rulings)*

[Sigh]. We actually *have* become a shameful joke on the world stage and the butt of everyone's roast, lately. Exactly the way we *supposedly* were when Obama or Biden had office and exactly the way Trump was *supposed* to stop, somehow. Well, I guess you have to start something before you can solve it, but Trump's not really a "Step 2" kind of guy - he's bored or out of his depth by that point.
3
Worried4lot 3 days ago +1
Trump *is* a step 2 kind of guy, really; one of his main strategies has been wrecking things and then returning as though he’s our savior, the one who prevented such disasters despite being the one who originally caused them

I'd argue trumps just made it acceptable for people to air there grievances on american openly. I've been hearing variations of how bad america is or how they should be removed from countrys/get rid of us bases for like my entire life(nor do i think americans should be removed not 100% but you get me) Ranging from ww2 vets going "why the hell did we let the yanks in" to modern " they dont even notice how bad it is and how good it is outside of america" The public (specially by western nations ) airing and spreading of said beliefs is newer but thats legit attributed to trump, american exceptionalism and things like how long its been repeated to be "such a great place" Y'all are witnessing whats happened to other pariah states firsthand I guess (like nk,china, many arab states etc)

The first two decades of my life I travelled to and toured a new foreign country every spring/summer, and often two. I *literally* cannot remember anyone, anywhere that just, like, loathed America and Americans. >!(Except the French. Dear god. French men are perfectly comfortable seeing a foreign child they've never met before and telling them they are dumb little twits for standing where he wanted to walk. ...At least I hope he said "twit."!< >!We stayed with a friend of my mom's in Cannes during the film festival and the entire time was: "Why are you friends!? Why would you cross an ocean to hang out with this person!? You HATE each other!" ~15 years later we reciprocated and she came to visit and stay with us here in the States. It was like she thought America was *radioactive,* trying to touch as little as possible and doing a minor "Can you believe I'm reduced to this?" pantomime anytime she had to. At some point in her life she made a snooty, disapproving face and it *actually struck that way.*!< >!Bertille, why? Why *are* you?)!< On the flip side, people overseas don't spend their days and lives dreaming of somehow, someday, coming to America. Most people are happy where they are, which is home. A lot of this country seems to think that everyone outside of it spends most of their time thinking about us.
0
Blagsc 5 days ago
Oh yeah open loathing like you guys have now was either not existing or hidden. I'm saying I'm seeing the hidden opinions come to light cause people can say it. Non-us experience here but i always saw people be so nice to americans and turn around and go "ergh tourists, ergh specially us tourists" now they just have the okay to say it aloud. Blame trump for ruining the image.

It’s a great win, no doubt about that, but we still have to keep pushing for a better future, Take the Save Act off the floor, and restrict or eliminate qualified immunity at the federal level! I personally think demanding the restriction or elimination of qualified immunity by congress is a more important demand then abolish ICE, but hey, that’s just me.

At this point I think it's one of the few things that will unite the queer community. So I hope it does get taken down, before something more serious happens. Like a list of trans people being made publicly available, or before trans people getting sent to prison for using the wrong bathroom. This is just more evidence that the admin will not stop with just trans people. That is their obsession for now, but the queer community as a whole is next.

I wonder what Mamdani said to Trump this time. Compared to the usual democrat, he's much more respectful and open to working with him on issues where he typically wouldn't budge unless forced to do so.

Didn’t they also take the T down from the LGBT? Whatever happened with that.

Trump is a POS in many ways but he’s never been as anti-LGBTQ or antisemitic as the right wing he’s become the leader of. However he is even more anti-Black and anti-Hispanic than the average American racist

Do people forget he has been the first to openly support gay marriages outright and not be forced by his party? The rainbow flag of 1st term? Or how he has hosted numerous gay weddings at Mar A Largo? He doesnt hate gays as much as the right wants him to, and he diesnt hate gays as much as the left thinks he does.
