Another reason why I stopped putting race on any application a long time ago.

My grandmother, a holocaust survivor, raised me to never put that on any form. ever. I still don't. It's nunya.

I can't imagine a single good thing that comes from these lists. How in the world is anyone okay with the federal government maintaining lists of Jewish people?

Dhiox Apr 4, 2026 +36
The idea is to to protect these groups. If they find a college is not admitting any Jewish applications, theh can launch an investigation to find out if there's discrimination occurring

Geaux2020 Apr 4, 2026 +14
Why does the government need the names, though? That can be done with an anonymous poll
14
Dhiox Apr 4, 2026 +19
The data is supposed to be anonymized, as far as I'm aware.
19
Geaux2020 Apr 4, 2026 +13
By who? The names are being turned over.

lordatomosk Apr 4, 2026 +29
That’s the point. In a good faith application of such a system, the people stay anonymous. But in the current regime, they want it and they have placed people who will give it to them.

The idea is you have the name and the group to ensure it's one submission per person. Then the data is split from that form and compiled separately to anonymize the data. Ideally this is done by the office you submitted the form to. The flaw is that this means that at some point the names and groups are kept together in a list that isn't anonymized. A good retention policy (which includes scheduled deletion) makes this less risky.

In the end, there is a list of Jewish students at this school in the possession of the federal government. People need to ask if they can trust our government with that.

Which is funny because my grandfather after I applied to college said ‘you are a minority, make sure you claim it!!!’ No one told me I was until that moment

Honestly it's just common sense, I'm always dumbfounded when I see that somewhere...

And if everyone felt that way, if everyone got the men-in-black mind wipe and it was removed from their brains, it would cease to exist entirely. Quite literally, the only place it exists is in how we arbitrarily decide to identify ourselves and others.

I like to check the box for a random minority. Give em a little boost in representation lol.

from that party that brought back, 'show me your papers', let's give it up for the song of the summer, 'give me a list of your jews.' But don't call them Nazis. It hurts their feelings. (again brought to you by the 'f*** your feelings' crowd.) I'm so tired boss.

Reminds me of a protest sign I saw in 2025. "I'm protesting right now, because it's a hell of a lot easier than hiding a family of immigrants in my attic later."

I’m sure the ADL will speak out and condemn the US government for this very concerning and eerily echoing Nazi history action. Everybody hold your breath, it’ll be any minute now.

Why would they need race related data anyway?

Wizchine Apr 4, 2026 +137
I guess to ensure colleges aren’t diverse, equitable, or inclusive?

It is basic data for lawsuits alleging discrimination against whites. That’s what many in this white supremacist administration believe is going on.

I believe it was originally meant to prevent a college from discriminating based on race.  It was a way of showing that the college had minorities enrolled. This wasn't the best way since it was easy to fake and was basically saying " I am not racist. I have black friends." But at the time there where a lot of colleges that prided themselves on having a " White College".  Being able to show proof that your college was welcoming to minorities, or unfortunately unwelcoming, was a way to draw in students and donors. Now it isn't necessary but it is still on the paperwork.

The administration can buy it, just like anyone else. They just wanted it for free.

Inignot12 Apr 5, 2026 +1
Yup they'll get the data either way, which is bad for everyone

ConformistWithCause Apr 4, 2026 +7
I'd find it funny as f*** if the colleges started sending like infographs of racing events they were hosting. 'Here's our information on how long a 4k actually is and how much we fundraised. Just like you asked'

We still have a Department of Education??? Or was it just downsized to oblivion?
19
Atralis Apr 4, 2026 +4
*"Saylor ruled the Education Department had the statutory authority to seek such data but he said the "rushed and chaotic manner" by which it adopted the new requirements led it to not properly engage with universities about problems they foresaw."* The headline doesn't match the content of the article. The judge ruled that the federal government has the authority to seek that data but it didn't give the schools a reasonable amount of time to organize and provide the data.

Euphoric_Anxiety_162 Apr 4, 2026 +7
Great!! How it goes IMO: He demands data, then uses it to create a false story to stir up maga fear & anger. Ultimately, he'll need MORE $$ to solve the imaginary prob he made up! He seems to enjoy sticking it to the weak. 😡

Captnlunch Apr 4, 2026 +16
There is no legitimate reason for the trump administration to want this.
16
Vic_Hedges Apr 4, 2026 -19
if a progressive administration was requesting the information in order to ensure universities were not unfairly discriminating against racial minorities, would that be a legitimate reason?
-19
Xsiah Apr 4, 2026 +21
Not necessarily, because that data in itself isn't useful for determining discrimination. If you live in Whiteyville, Whitesford you might just have a predominantly white population and the demographics of your students reflect that. If you have a black person who claims they were denied access to WhiteyU, it would be up to a judge to decide whether the release of that information might be pertinent to the case or not. But the government that signed some dubious unenforceable policy can f*** off.

When will this end? When will the elected GOP find their balls and stand up to this racist idiot?

About 5 minutes before they find themselves lined up against a wall…

Literally never, why would you ask something so asinine?

Diplomat_of_swing Apr 4, 2026 +2
The GOP standing up to Trump is not the issue. They have no incentive to and at this point Trump is the GOP. The moderates are out of leadership. The issue is all the people who would vote for democrats if they bothered to vote and the Democrats failure to focus on a small set of policies that will deliver immediate wins for working people that they will see and feel in their bills and paychecks. We gotta save ourselves
