Smith College is a private university. So, what trump is saying is the government should control private business.

CletusCanuck 5 days ago +104
Well yeah, that's what fascism does. It's pretty much a key tenet. It's state-controlled capitalism, where 'The State' = 'Dear Leader'. Private Industry is bent to His will and whims. He picks favorites, punishes companies out of favor, doles out patronage, and grifts at every opportunity.
104
Venator850 4 days ago +3
If it's State controlled then it's just a command economy at that point. Which is basically modern day China.

I_only_post_here 6 days ago +1959
That's ludicrous statement. Trump doesn't want the government to control private business. It's absurd you'd even make such a statement and shows you haven't paid any attention to what's really happening in the world. Trump wants Trump to control private business.

Trump wants Republicans to control private businesses, if the government in general was allowed to control private business that would mean that Democrats would get a say. They might do horrible things like demand they treat their employees well instead of noble goals like forcing businesses to torture minority groups.

True fascism requires this. Private industry Its the obvious next play in the playbook for the wealthiest elites to cement their deathgrip on American society. “Private property is henceforth not an absolute right; it may be subordinated to the interests of the people and the state.” Adolph Hitler - Speech at Reichstag 1933 https://www.worldfuturefund.org/reports2013/hitlerenablingact.htm

I know what you mean. It’s def frustrating since none of this information is new. Ran out of breath over the years arguing with “Christians” on how greed is the root of all evil whilst being the fuel for the “holy grail” we assigned to capitalism. No one is prepared for what happens if we all return to truly acting individually/selfishly.. thats anarchy.

They use psychological violence all the time (gaslighting, manipulation, hypocritical criticism, etc.). And their whole purpose is to make you look bad while whitewashing what they do. Before you know, you’re confused as f***, and making yourself look bad due to anger and impotence. Tbh, violence is the only way of breaking such a loop. You’ll look bad once, but at least you can obtain some result out of it, and your bad look will have a real reason. Playing their game you end up looking bad, angry, confused, getting nothing and empowering them.

You see enough fully deranged anti-trans memes from right wingers and that's the only possible conclusion left. I've got a whole folder on my phone of anti-trans psychosis to show people who doubt the severity of the issue. People posting genuinely fucked up stuff, gore, murder, talking about wanting to throw trans people, even young ones like kids, into woodchippers. Sodom and Gomorrah references, talking about burning them alive. A few really mental ones going off about how they want to capture and experiment on them like the Nazis did. I don't think the average person watching comedians cracking jokes about them has any idea how deep and dark this hate movement really is.
88
waffle_iron_maiden 5 days ago +34
All you really have to do is show people how frequently bigots try to cite suicide statistics of trans people as some sort of gotchya. That should be enough for anyone with a heart to stop and say hold on that's pretty fucked up Citing suicide statistics, and essentially sticking trans people in a box insisting they need mental help while also reminding them of suicide statistics to make them feel worse and worse about themselves. It's pointing out suicide statistics and directly pushing those statistics to get worse, being part of the problem due to a lack of basic empathy. I have seen people proudly tout online how they need to crank those numbers up. It really is vile. I'm not willing to argue with people who left their heart in the dirt rotting a long time ago
34
Syncopia 5 days ago +16
Yeah I've got screenshots of a lot of that. "42% lol" "We gotta get that 42% up to 100%. Those are rookie numbers." The number changes all the time from a****** to a******, and then you get those concern trolls who pretend they just want to help them not commit suicide. I've linked the studies showing that transitioning lowers suicidality and they'll walk right past it and continue gaslighting by insisting that transitioning is the reason they're doing it. Fully deranged, fully dishonest, fully malignant. It's sick.
16
waffle_iron_maiden 5 days ago +4
It's hard to wrap my head around that kind of hatred towards people you have never spoken to, even though this happens so frequently in human history. It should not ever be considered normal to celebrate their deaths. That should be the bare minimum. That's just human decency. But hey, there's a lot of very indecent people out there unfortunately. And they hide behind screens saying the most vile things imaginable to entire swathes of people they've never interacted with outside of trying to talk shit to them
4
Poison_Spider 5 days ago +3
And the 42% is the amount of trans people who have thought about it at least once, right? They never say what statistic it actually is.

Stoking the hate keeps the masses redirecting their repressed rage to a useful scapegoat. This way the folks striking the scalegoat can continue to foment the rage by the continue impoverishment of the people. On the one hand, eventually that rage tears down the oppressive system, but on the other hand; this guaranteed end of authoritarian fascism destroys the entire social structure *and* its provisions. (At least by every historical example of it anyways.) Tragic irony par excellaaaance. Sad.

The people upset about DEI are the funniest people to be involved in this conversation specifically because Smith is a women's college (or rather, a "historically single-sex institution" that hasn't officially gone co-ed); that's why the investigation is happening in the first place. You'd think that the DEI haters would hate the concept of women's colleges (like HBCUs) and not be trying to "protect the sanctity of women's education" or whatever bullshit they've come up with.

Some of the first books burned by the nazis we’re about trans people. It’s literally the same playbook
120
Particular-Ice4615 5 days ago +3
It literally is isn't it? RFK wanting to create an autism registry should have rang the alarm bells.  The first group given identifying arm bands and then purged by the Nazis before it got to the Jews and gypsies were people with mental and physical disabilities and mental health issues and homosexuals which was deemed a mental illness back then.  Hence why they want to loosen restrictions on school councillors and conversion therapy camps across several Republican states. Its clear as day what their ambitions are and it's not alarmist to say so.  The difference they know explicit drafted policy and legislation is unpopular across the board so they instead work through interpretations of existing law, and leaving it to the private sector and private citizens with services to enforce instead of using the state directly for plausible denialbility.

There is more than enough power among them to handle this if it is needed. And of course they haven't and they don't. It's always only ever government officials proclaiming there is a problem.

> A rightwing education group, Defending Education, filed a complaint in June 2025 to the education department’s office of civil rights against Smith, urging the department to investigate the college. The group goes after schools and teachers unions nationwide over diversity policies and perceived biases, saying it wants to “fight indoctrination in classrooms and on campus”. Oh yeah, because this is obviously a TOP PRIORITY issue we as a country should be focused on, not like we have anything else that we have to deal with.

Al2718x 6 days ago +24
I think that it is much more than a mere distraction. Higher education teaches students to reflect on tradition, question authority, and be open to a variety of viewpoints. This kind of thinking is incredibly dangerous for the livelihood of an exploitative regime that values obedience over competence. As an aspiring college professor, I hate the constant attacks to cripple higher education, but I also totally understand them from a strategic standpoint.

What sucks is we can kick ass in the mid-terms to somewhat restrain Trump, and then kick ass again in 2028 and put a respectable, competent president back in the White House, but the world will always know we're one election away from putting Kid Rock or Erika Kirk in charge. Meanwhile, the clowns who voted for Trump genuinely seem to believe that "the world respects us now like never before" and they'll never acknowledge otherwise.

Raptorex27 5 days ago +7
That’s why we need actual, systemic reform in order to move on from this. We’re talking massive Supreme Court reform, Constitutional amendments, uncapping the House, killing the Senate filibuster, creating the Electoral College Interstate Compact, and (above else), prosecuting and convicting every one of these criminals currently serving in this administration. Anything less and the rest of the World won’t take us seriously for generations.
7
QbertsRube 5 days ago +3
For sure. My top priorities for 2028 candidates will be 1) Justice for the crimes of Trump, his administration, and his family, and 2) massive reforms to campaign finance and checks & balances to prevent another Trump. None of my other priorities (decrease wealth gap, affordable housing, healthcare, and college, etc) will happen without those foundational changes happening first. We can't be run exclusively by and for the ultra-rich, and can't move forward with a government that operates above the law.

You're not "one bad election" away from this kind of mess, you're several amazing elections away from even coming close to fixing it in the first place, and it's not just Trump's mess either, it's the fact that your country is run by people who don't represent the populace, that big companies have effectively bought their way into far too much of the government and have rendered it *at best* extremely ineffective.

The college opened in 1875 and counts among its alumni multiple first ladies, elected officials and civic leaders. So this is well within the bounds of the college's admissions expectations. Which is what I'm asking. So transgender people aren't allowed at a college THEY'RE paying for? There is no rules that say anyone can't attend a college - we got rid of segregation of education.

You are at war without congressional approval and your entire party is hemorrhaging support. Maybe leave the school admissions to the administrators that you gutted funding for.

Haha but they are NOT investigating all the pedophiles and sexual harassers exposed by the Epstein files, that’s for sure.

As if right-wingers care about consistency and hypocrisy? They don't even care about the constitution anymore (perhaps never did).

I’m sorry, what? I missed the part where Smith College isn’t allowed to decide who to let in. They are a private institution. They get to decide what genders are allowed in. Aren’t republicans supposed to be for small government? What is this shit?

Why has every person with an ounce of power decided to roll over and suck this guy off. I’m so sick that no one is trying to stop this guy when it has become apparent the midterms are being fixed and every day they bleed more money from this country. Someone needs to actually do something to put this moron in his place instead of rolling over. He isn’t smart, it wouldn’t take much to make him lose it.

Isn’t Smith a private institution? WTF from them cares what 47 thinks? F*** this timeline in my life. His coffin won’t be filled nearly in time for my tastes.

Investigating for what, exactly? That's the thing I'm always confused by, there's no legal law or precedent they can invoke to sue these schools, though may-hap the intention is intimidation and wasting their time and money in court in the hopes they just capitulate and do what they want.
15

A private college can admit whoever they want. Wtf are they "investigating?"

We should all know by now that the process of investigations and legal action is ALL this administration can do - the punishment is the process. Hold the line. Fascism will crumble under its own weight and we're watching that happening in real time.

I can't help wondering how much longer this country is going to allow this stupidity to stand. We have to get our young people away from these online hate groups before we have a generation fine with segregation as long as they get cheaper gas prices.

Pretty much every women’s college started referring to themselves as “gender minority” colleges over 10 years ago. They all let in trans women. They also let in trans men. Like the only thing they don’t accept is cis men. This is not at all new. They’re also all private institutions and can do what they want. There are still mens only colleges as well.

my understanding is smith does not allow trans men. I'm a grad student at smith who is trans, but the grad programs are co-ed

Alum here. When will all this trans-phobia stop? Trans people have existed since the beginning of time! Why are people so hateful and fearful? I have never understood any of it in any way. It is so ignorant and primitive.

People have [scapegoated](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mimetic_theory) since the beginning of time you know. >The scapegoat mechanism has one requirement for it to be effective in restoring the peace; all participants in the removal of the scapegoat must genuinely believe that he is guilty. It is also essential that the scapegoat cannot strike back afterwards, so it is common for him to be killed. Once he is gone, peace will quickly be restored, further confirming his "guilt". However, the scapegoat is chosen arbitrarily. The resulting peace is borne from violence, and this form of violence controlling violence has existed since the beginning of civilizations.

I attend a women’s college similar to Smith. I share housing and bathrooms with trans women on campus. It’s such a non-issue.

There’s a cost of living crisis, operation epstein’s fury is causing an oil shortage, inflation is out of control, the Epstein files are being redacted/protected, and trump is focused on schools admitting trans people. Trump is one of the worst world leaders this century.

Why is his administration so focused on non issues? Literally no one cares. This isn’t an issue. The issues are within the Oval Office and around Washington

This should be all you need to know about trump. All you need to know about why he is a vile scumbag. There's many other reasons but this is a good one. He's a guy who wants to hurt transgender people for no good reason than he doesn't like them, or his stupid base doesn't like them, so why not just try to make their lives miserable. Or better yet just erase them from existence. This is what trump wants apparently. But I know a lot of MAGA are vile scumbags too unfortunately. They hate transgender people too just because they dare exist. Just leave them be. These MAGA idiots are such losers. They must lead such lame empty lives that they have to take it out on a bunch of innocent good people. How about just let them live their lives without you MAGA assholes terrorizing this group of people who NEVER did a goddamn thing to you.

This is just ridiculous. Trans women are women. Trans men are men. You're only threatened by them if you're insecure within yourself and the rest of the world doesn't care. We're all just trying to live.
