Trump calls Strait of Hormuz the 'Strait of Trump'
Trump recently floated the possibility that the strait could be controlled jointly by "me and the ayatollah" as part of a resolution to the Iran war.

There's a The Coup song from 1994 called "Pimps (Free Stylin at the Fortune 500 Club)" where everyone on the song pretends to be a different rich person at a party as they pass the mic. When it's "Trump's" turn, there's a joke about everyone wanting to leave and then a bunch of his verse is just him saying his name. That aged well.
198
funkymagee Mar 28, 2026 +45

There's tons of better things that could have happened in the past than someone telling him "no." Guy should be in f****** prison. This is all a failure in our systems more than it is a failure in him or a failure in anyone who never told him "no." It is obscene that our system is filled with such losers that no one will stand up to this d*** head and our entire system is apparently broken. This narcissistic bag of c*** is just the first one to really take advantage of just how broken our system is.

The “American Experiment” has clearly failed. The Constitution is in tatters. SCOTUS is corrupt. POTUS is corrupt. The House\* and the Senate\* have been bought and/or are the weakest representatives the public can endure. I expect that this will take decades to recover from. \* the individual states as well.
85
FuzzyCub20 Mar 28, 2026 +42
It requires a new constitution and new checks on power in every branch, period. Any less than a complete overhaul will eventually allow power and money to corrupt it once again. In the age of information and technology I believe that a more direct democracy than a Republic is needed, with a focus on education, medical care, renewables, and equal treatment under the law for all the peoples within America's borders.
42
FlushTheTurd Mar 28, 2026 +1
Unfortunately, roughly 50% of our voters hate all of those things. I hope that the cult eventually dissolves, but I worry MAGA will truly never be gone. If that’s the case, I think we’re not going to be okay until MAGA moves to Texas and few other southern states and secedes from the USA. No country can survive the absolute evil and stupidity of MAGA.
1
cerisegoat Mar 28, 2026 +1
Sadly I don’t think MAGA will go away, because they’ve always been there. The confederates, the KKK, the tea party, the obsession with ‘freedom’ at all costs, rampant nationalism and militarism masquerading as patriotism - hatred, bigotry, religious fundamentalism and anti-intellectualism are hard wired into the American psyche. Social media and an unchecked corrupt media (starting with Murdoch and Fox) have amplified and united these forces as never before, but they’ve always been there. The only way out would be a root and branch reckoning, constitutional overhaul, strict media oversight and an immense amount of spending on education. But the USA’s mortal fear of ‘socialism’ means that’s never going to happen. In other words, the cancer has always been there, now it’s reached stage 4.

MuricanPoxyCliff Mar 28, 2026 +1
American liberal here. Yep. America is indeed in decline, and I believe a UN Agency or some other international body recognized we are about halfway down the authoritarian/oligarch rabbit hole, down a staggering amount from the prior evaluation, which was still far lower than the America I was born into as we reached for the moon in the late 60's. My 12 year old is getting more world-wise and he asked me about life before Trump. I wept while contrasting Obama (for all his flaws), who was so much of a positive, thoughtful, inclusive leader, vs where we have fallen to. First time he's seen his dad cry. American conservatism and economic policy were always waiting in the wings. Like Mordo warms Dr. Strange, the bill come due. Always. I thought 9/11 was that bill. I happen to think bin Ladin achieved his goal. And I think, like a tsunami, the second wave is far worse than the first. This is the second wave, fed and fueled by spectacle, social media propaganda, and Fox... throw in a worldwide pandemic and QAnon... America is no longer worthy of world leadership, full stop. Now we're just the player with a shitload of weapons. Call it Putin's revenge.
1
Alaishana Mar 28, 2026 +1
Man, it's just that the veneer came off. T is saying the quiet, implied part out loud. The USA never was what you were told to believe.
1
Suspicious_Radio_848 Mar 28, 2026 +1
Don’t forget the voters themselves. This is symptomatic of a deep rot in American society, the representatives are just like them. This is why the rest of the world is moving on now, the old status quo is over.

>He believes, therefore, that he must become an immortal to the German people. Everything must be huge and befitting as a monument to the honor of Hitler. His idea of a permanent building is one which will endure at least a thousand years. His highways must be known as "Hitler Highways", and they must endure for longer periods of time than the Napoleonic roads. He must always be doing the impossible and leaving his mark on the country. This is one of the ways in which he hopes to stay alive in the minds of the German people for generations to come. Walter Langer, 1943

Is right wing fascism threatening democracy somehow exclusively a US phenomenon currently? Sure it is loud and getting extreme here, but this shift is affecting basically every democracy at this point. You can see it happening even in Japan, where immigrants are a drop in the bucket in population but somehow the cause of every problem over there. None of the others are as diverse and physically big as the US, so we have unique challenges coming out of that. Right wing corpo-oligarch poison is spreading the world over, hopefully you are aware of it in your own country, if it markets itself as a democracy.
1
JackedUpReadyToGo Mar 28, 2026 +1
MAGA is a fundamental personality type, one that exists in all times and places and seems to account for about 1/4 to 1/3 of the population. Robert Altemeyer was feeling his way toward this when he proposed the ["right wing authoritarian"](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_authoritarianism) type. This type of person continually generates hate and fear (two sides of the same coin to them: *"by a continuous shifting of rhetorical focus..."*) **and then** seeks a target for it. All they desire is official sanction to direct that hate and fear toward some particular group of people (they really don't much care who, so long as they don't feel kinship to them). They've always been with us, but it was only relatively recently that the capitalist class discovered how to wield them as a political weapon. That knowledge is now spreading around the globe to other ruling classes. No nation is immune to this disease.

29
earwig2000 Mar 28, 2026 +1
This is what people don't understand about Trump IMO. He has no actual beliefs, he doesn't care about anyone or anything except himself. He'd say Trans Pride BLM if he thought that would get him more popular, and he's always been like this. There are interviews from the early 2000s where he considers running for president *as a democrat*. It's the people around him, the Steven Millers and JD Vances who actually believe in the fascism that they're bringing about. Trump is just the useful idiot that allowed them to get into power. He's so easy to control its insane, you just suck him off for a few days and gift him a bunch of shit and he'll do whatever you say. Whenever Trump says something like "The highest polling president in history, the greatest president in history, the best economy in history" he's not even lying, he genuinely believes that to be true. He's lied to by his own staff in a constant stream just to keep him happy, and making sure the actual agenda gets put in place.

Literally Heart of Darkness: "You should have heard him say, 'My ivory.' Oh, yes, I heard him. 'My Intended, my ivory, my station, my river, my - ' everything belonged to him. It made me hold my breath in expectation of hearing the wilderness burst into a prodigious peal of laughter that would shake the fixed stars in their places. Everything belonged to him - but that was a trifle. The thing was to know what he belonged to, how many powers of darkness claimed him for their own.”

It's genuinely frightening how a single person's unchecked ego can become a global liability. The fact that this kind of rhetoric is even possible speaks to a profound failure of accountability at every stage. You're right, a simple "no" decades ago might have prevented a lot of this chaos. Now we're all stuck dealing with the consequences of that absence.

In Dutch we have a proverb: "Gekken en dwazen schrijven hun naam op deuren en glazen." Which translates to (more or less): "Fools and idiots write their name on doors and windows." Or the English equivalent: ”Fools’ Names, Like Fools’ Faces, Are Often Seen in Public Places."

> “Excuse me. I’m so sorry. Such a terrible mistake,” he said, feigning apologetics before clarifying, “The fake news will say, ‘He accidentally said’ — No, there’s no accidents with me, not too many. If there were, we’d have a major story.” So he definitely said it accidentally.

I find myself imagining a fictional scenario in which I am standing at Trump’s deathbed and get to tell him that we will be erasing his name from history, and giving all of his wealth to charities helping the people he hurt. Hopefully he can ponder that for a few weeks before he goes.

He can call it whatever he wants, still doesn't change the fact that he's a rapist and likely pedophile. And also a 34 count felon, a loser of a businessman, a grifter, and a weirdo.
