Its like these people learned something in grade school and refuse to accept over time we learn more and things tend to shift with more information.
They are actually incapable of adjusting their understanding and that is scary for someone running a country if their knowledge is based off 6th grade history and drawing turkey cutouts from your hand

I always describe it as an aversion to learning. My cowowrker is MAGA and is like this. As soon as you try to teach them something or introduce new information, suddenly the conversation is boring and he can't be bothered.

It's almost always a personality type that prides themselves on being self sufficient and good at doing shit, too.
I do IT in schools. While most staff are overwhelmingly on the Left in public education, facilities staff are a lot more mixed. Especially in a rural area like mine. Some are straight up MAGA.
They are the type of people that are pretty good at a wide variety of general tasks, which is a good thing, but they are also quick to judge other people who are not good at what they are good at. Just a simple example: I've actually seen these people talking condescendingly about teachers that were taking their car in for an oil change or to put on snow tires rather than do it themselves.
Yet the moment they encounter something that is unfamiliar to them, they freeze up like a deer in headlights. I see this all the f****** time in IT because they generally suck at computers and are, for some f****** reason, largely incapable of learning.
This really extends beyond conservatives. It's just that they are more prone to being an a****** about it like that. Seems like age 35+ is around the time a lot of people have difficulty learning new things and adapting to new concepts. Even simpler things like discovering new music. I'm in my mid 40's now and still going strong. I'm just hoping if I keep at it - keep exercising that brain meat - that this doesn't happen to me.

Isn’t that literally what the word conservative is? Not necessarily about learning, but being open to change and/or new things. Change requires effort and energy, whether you’re the one changing things or adapting to change.

I think it's a fair point, actually.
Conservatism at its purest form is a desire to keep things the same or return to a prior state. Learning by definition is a rejection of conservatism, you are changing and growing when you learn.

Pretty much this.
A very good example is women’s sports. No men really cared about women’s sports 10 years ago, hell 5-6 years ago even. It was there, they knew about it, but no men, especially conservative men really, cared thing one about girls high school softball, or the WNBA, or women’s national swimming team. If anything they probably saw it as “the damn ladies team”
NOW, they fight a literal crusade to SAVE WOMENS SPORTS! It’s SO important that we preserve the holy sanctity of women’s sports! Why? Because there’s like 6 trans people in the entire country playing on women’s sports teams. “WHAT? can’t have THAT! not the trans people!! That’s woke! And different, and nuanced, and I don’t like it!!!”
So now conservatives all of a sudden care sooooo much about women’s sports and making sure that women’s sports stays all women because they just care sooo much about women.
No. They don’t. They hate women, tbh. They don’t “STAND” for anything, nothing. Especially women’s sports.
Even if there are some good arguments about keeping women’s teams all biologically female (and don’t get me wrong there are some good arguments) the issue itself means nothing to them, they don’t care directly about the actual sanctity of women’s teams.
They care sooo much much because in their crusade to purify women’s sports, they are painting trans people as evil, and creating a stigma around the LGBTQ population. That makes them very very happy. They want those people to not exist, and it has become a very important issue to them to make those people’s lives as hard as possible.
So by proxy, now they care about women’s sports. Columbus, specific beer brands, elementary schools, drag queens, ALL manner of things that meant absolutely nothing to them before. It’s not because they care about these things so much, it’s because they want to hurt specific demographics of people for personal satisfaction.

Women sports is such a good example of this. The same people who act like women sports are ruined because of half a dozen trans athletes in low major conferences make the WNBA the punchline of their jokes. Hell I saw people making fun of women's march madness blowout scores saying there's no point in most of those schools even having women's sports.

On a couple occasions, I've said to my pastor, "Sometimes, I wish I had a Sunday School knowledge of theology." Only because I took three theology classes in college, and it's like the old saying: "The more you learn, the less you know." I was milling around the church before youth group one Tuesday when I was in high school, and the old woman who cleaned the church stopped to chat with me. She asked me if I was planning to go to college.
At the time, I was seriously thinking of becoming a pastor but also potentially getting not only my pastoral but a full on degree in theology. When she heard that her nose wrinkled and she said something along the lines of 'oh, you don't want a degree in theology. They don't teach you the *right things*.'
I didn't end up becoming a pastor or getting a degree in theology (not because of her) but that stuck with me. By the way, this woman not only cleaned the church but also had a degree in psychology and worked with at risk kids.

According to a quick Google search, Columbus "sold Indigenous girls—some as young as 9 or 10—into sexual slavery to his men, admitting in his own writings that there was a high demand for young girls."
A very fitting hero for the Epstein administration.
And no, it wasn't just "the morality of the time," as the Spanish were well aware that what Columbus was doing was wrong. Columbus lost his governship because of his brutality and was sent back to Spain in chains. He was only released because of his usefulness in navigating, but he was permanently forbidden from holding political power ever again.

I wouldn’t say it goes so far as some American people just making up a false narrative of him. It’s decades of Columbus propaganda taught to school kids for decades.
Columbus has a holiday because in the early 1900s the US wanted to set a holiday for Italian Americans and other immigrants. Many didn’t know many famous Italian Americans and just chose Columbus by default. So he gets a holiday, statues, places named after him, and an ever expanding myth.
At this point we could probably just stop. Maybe make an Italian American or Immigrant Day, and have every town or state recognize important immigrants from their region.
People have proposed a Native American or American Indian day. Which I personally think is a great idea. A month would be better. Especially one teaching the heritage of whichever nation is local to each state. But I don’t think it’s a replacement for Columbus Day.
In my opinion two different holidays for two different groups of people is a win win for everyone. But more importantly we need to course correct and stop honoring Columbus. The man was terrible by every metric.

They should just pick another Italian. Italians/Italian Americans want their struggles with and contributions to the US to be recognized and rightfully so. They should be able to keep Columbus Day but change the name. I mean, Amerigo Vespucci is *right there.*

That is not true. The letter in question is a letter he sent to Juana de Torres, former nurse of prince Juan, denouncing what Ovando and his minions were doing after he was stripped of his titles. Among the things he denounces we see the sale of children as slaves, some as young as 9.
Quite hypocritical of his, being that Bobadilla's inquiry had shown that he had sold people into slavery for debts, including Spanish people. Bobadilla's inquiry is horrifying, showing that among other things, Columbus had executed people without due process, applied draconian punishments for minor infractions, and had the colony in a stste of terrible mismanagenent.

That's 100% what it is. Trump is the embodiment of culture war. When someone pointed out what kind of a person Columbus was, someone else sorted that person into the liberal tribe and decided their tribe had to oppose them. Columbus in his own words (**warning, disturbing and NSFW / NSFL**):
>Excerpt: “While I was in the boat, I captured a very beautiful Carib woman, whom the said Lord Admiral gave to me. When I had taken her to my cabin she was naked—as was their custom. I was filled with a desire to take my pleasure with her and attempted to satisfy my desire. She was unwilling, and so treated me with her nails that I wished I had never begun. But—to cut a long story short—I then took a piece of rope and whipped her soundly, and she let forth such incredible screams that you would not have believed your ears. Eventually we came to such terms, I assure you, that you would have thought that she had been brought up in a school for whores.”

An Italian born explorer who worked for the Spaniards needs a statue at the WH? Wait till ICE hears about this.

His real name/ birth name was Italian, and was Cristoforo Colombo, and when he moved to live in Spain, he was known in Spanish as, Cristóbal Colón.
So the Whitehouse garden has a huge statue of a Colon and the oval office has a huge ass hole!
It makes a lot of sense when you look at it this way!

It's actually interesting that for a progressive like me that the Trump administration, unlike other conservative administrations, have no redeeming qualities or policies at all. Everything they do, symbolic or otherwise, are just provocative, stupid or downright evil!

Lol my MAGA dad told me a long time ago how bad of a person Columbus was, before all the talk about changing Columbus day to Indigenous People's day. Wonder what he would say about this.

Just to be clear, Christopher Columbus was not American, never actually set foot on North American soil, and really had very little to do with modern America as a whole, yet Trump built a statue of him on the white house lawn because f*** wokeness?

The statue will be easily removed at a later date. Nothing he does or stands for is permanent. He is a temporary stain on America. That is all.

I can’t wait to see the dumpster full of gold painted garbage on the first day the new occupant takes residence…followed by his name being chiselled off of the Kennedy Center and hopefully the unfinished ballroom being repurposed and renamed.

Everything to “own the libs” because he knows people think Columbus Day is a total sham. There is no actual genuine interest or respect for Columbus. Nothing they do is founded in an actual love of anything. It is all calculated poking and prodding of the people they hate.

He’s pandering to Italians as ANY wise individual with a background in US History knows that Columbus and his people got lost found Puerto Rico and America, killed and raped a shitload of Native Americans and stole their possessions and land. Christopher Columbus isn't even American. He wasn't even regarded as a significant part of American History until the middle of last century when Catholics decided to white-wash the f*** out of him to make him an icon.
However, he's become an icon of white supremacy, now, *because* people learned about all the torture, slavery, and child r*** Columbus got up to. Just one more mark of how tragically ugly the current American government is.
