"Trump dismissed criticism that targeting civilian infrastructure could constitute war crimes. “I’m not worried about it. You know what’s a war crime? Having a nuclear weapon,” he said earlier during a White House Easter event." Who's gonna tell him?

Well who knew global politics and running a country of 350 million people would be hard? (~349,999,999 people)
48
ThatDudeShadowK 4 days ago +18
>349,999,999 people I mean it's obviously significantly less people than that since more half the voting population decided to ignore all the experts and go for the guy who sounds like them.
18
lavender_fluff 4 days ago +6
It wasn't more than half the voting population. It was more than half the population *per districts* which is a significant distinction cause it means if you wouldn't be having those very convenient voting district borders favoring republicans you wouldn't be in that situation. Here in Germany we have two votes we can give every vote. One vote is by district just like your voting system, but the other is almost even more important cause the second vote gets pooled across all of Germany so every vote is actually worth equally. The first vote gets used for direct mandates and it's common to vote outside of your preferred party for that if it's a head to head between candidates of other parties, but for the second vote you just wanna vote for a party that will likely make it past the 5% hurdle and they have their own lists for mandates by priority that will get into the Bundestag by ratio. If we had only direct mandates, our system would almost look like a two party or maybe three party system (since afd, although maybe they would have never made it in the first place, but cdu/csu isn't any better either really) as well.

There is an almost Emperor Palpatine-like level of evil embodied in Donald Trump. The number of horrible things he's been involved in would only be more impressive if he was competent and intelligent. A lunatic born into wealth, who started his career as a loan shark for his father and then as a Wall Street scumbag extorting tenants, peddling faulty goods, and bankrupting businesses with tax fraud, while simultaneously joining in and likely co-leading a massive, pedophelia-based cult among the wealthy and powerful. It would almost be impressive if he was also intelligent. If that was the case, with his normal personality, he'd be a f****** supervillain. He might be fully aware of it, he might not care, but I definitely don't think that he considers himself on the side of good in this argument. He either doesn't care that he's evil, maybe because he was never taught the difference or because he thinks he's above morality, or he knows he's evil, and enjoys it.
99
shr00mydan 4 days ago +41
>he thinks he's above morality He actually said this, concerning whether it was moral to attack Greenland - "My own morality. My own mind. It's the only thing that can stop me".

See, Bill, what we do in our family, when someone says that, is call the police. I'm not sure what more the world needs to hear from this guy. Headline is confusing. He said they can knock everything out over the course of four hours if they don't reach an agreement by the deadline. The deadline hasn't changed, the title is just a bit misleading. Of course we all know the deadline will still end up changing, but this isn't it.

The deadline has changed. It was initially Monday April 6, and then he pushed that back to April 7 (without really realizing it at the time). He realized that during the press conference today. 🤣 then it was at 8pm (it is anyone guess which time zone he was talking about), then it became 12pm… so who knows…

Problem is he made the line to all or nothing.  It needs an escalation path to give the Iranian government off ramps.   Something along the lines of deadline 1 passes they knock out 1 major plant but stop there, dead line 2, take out another or several smaller facilities, deadline 3 some major substation ect ect. Deadline could even just be a small part of a plant, the steup up transformer or the substation that allows it to send power as an example.  These are expensive, limited in supply, but not do or die and serve to say were serious while not making the threat immediately deadly.

The deadline keeps changing because he's failing on every front. My worry is that there was resistance in the military against these orders but now with the recent military purge he managed to find a submissive general willing to commit war crimes for him.
84

26
TDStrange 4 days ago +11
He already found a bunch of generals on down ready to commit war crimes, this entire war is illegal not to mention we were drone striking fishermen indiscriminately for a year before this. That whole thing about the military refusing illegal orders is a proven lie at this point, they won't. They'll fire on Americans as soon as Trump says he won the 2028 election.

Hitting their power is going to take down so much vital infrastructure its insane. I can see this killing a million civilians as they are already short on water. If all the pumping stations go down they will have no chance. Such a horrific war crime if the US carry it out.
41
IDontEatDill 4 days ago +11
How can it be a war crime? Trumps best pal Netanyahu told that they do it all the time.
11
knockers_who_knock 4 days ago +37
The only thing this administration is consistent of is being inconsistent. One day we were attacking Iran because of the massacre of their protesters, to help them rise up and overthrow their government. Then it was to stop their nuclear program. Now trump and co are talking about bombing civilian infrastructure no doubt putting millions of civilian lives at risk because they realized holding the strait is going to be too costly. Tomorrow it’ll be a totally different reason. Edit: Totally forgot one of the things they said was that “we won the war” lol 😂

Since people aren't reading the article, the 'in four hours' of the headline is referring to how long it would take from the 8 PM Eastern Time deadline tomorrow until midnight, during which Trump is claiming the US military would be able to bomb all 130 or so power plants in Iran. He's not saying the deadline is in 4 hours from now or anything like that.

203
RGJ587 4 days ago +255
Well, aside from the fact that its a warcrime, and trump loves commiting warcrimes... From a purely logistical standpoint, it's actually strategically what would be needed to reopen the strait. While drones in flight aren't restricted by availability of power on the ground, everything leading up to their launch does rely on electricity. And, generators are big, loud, and have very noticeable heat signatures. Without power, Iran's ability to wage 21st century warfare essentially disappears. But again, cutting power off from a country of 93 million people is INSANITY. It's a warcrime which will result in thousands of death (certainty), and possibly orders of magnitude more depending on how it unfolds.
255
Watchful1 4 days ago +79
Eh, it's true that this would stop drone production. But Iran isn't blocking the strait by drone bombing all the tanker ships. It's blocking it by threatening to drone bomb them. You don't need very many drones to do that and they definitely have enough sitting around.
79

Cutting off power would also cut off power to the desalinization plants that provide drinking water. It would kill millions of people.
65
RGJ587 4 days ago +82
Only 3% of their potable water is made in desalination plants. Its actually all the other gulf coast nations which are almost completely reliant on their desalination efforts to survive. But yea, my thousands estimate was a certainty by just assuming the folks in ICUs across the country would die from the blackout (which they would). In reality, a complete and irreversible blackout of nearly 100million people is a massive danger. You would have a complete breakdown of society, which would result in a ton of crime, and deaths. Idk if it would reach the millions, but it would be bad, very, very bad.
82

Wild_Haggis_Hunter 4 days ago +25
Not in Iran though. It only accounts for a very small fraction of water consumption in this mountainous country. But on the other side of the detroit, it would wreak havoc on the GCC. We're talking about 16 days tops until mandatory migration from those skyscrapers in the middle of the desert. And that's what Iran warned them about, don't aim for the desalinization plants or we'll destroy yours... But Trump and Netanyahu don't care for they won't be affected.
25
Seanspeed 4 days ago +32
>Why bomb the power plants though?  It really is just about making people suffer at this point. Even the semi-failed bombing campaigns of the US and UK on Germany in WW2 weren't this shortsighted. The idea here is that Iranian leaders will succumb because their people are suffering too much. It's going to have the opposite effect and we all know it.

Goodbye hospitals, blood banks, water purification systems, sewage treatment… Just casually threatening to violate international humanitarian laws and nothing will happen if he does. This is literally how hitler started WW2. World War II started with hitler testing international boundaries and everyone just let him get away with shit. Hitler had The Rhineland, then Austria, and then Czechoslovakia before Poland was FINALLY the breaking point. They literally handed him Czechoslovakia So far trump has kidnapped the Venezuelan president and nobody did shit, started an illegal war in Iran in which blatant war crimes have been committed and no one is doing shit, he saying Cuba is next… We are all fools. If some nobody like me can see it then everyone who matters can and they are just letting it happen all over again

He said they would take them out over the course of four hours, so saying it would only take a few hours to bomb everything. The deadline is still tomorrow. Don't agree with any of this, but just clarifying as the four hours headline is misleading until you read the article.

>“I’m not worried about it. You know what’s a war crime? Having a nuclear weapon,” \- Someone who has nuclear weapons, about someone who doesn't.

Also: Israel has nuclear weapons, which are illegal under the non-proliferation treaty (which Israel has refused to sign).

A lot of people seem unclear about when the deadline is Maybe the President should draw a clock showing when the deadline is in each timezone. That might help

That drawing may be too complex for his advanced stage of dementia

Trump firing all his generals and replacing them with more yes-men. Hegseth claiming this is some kind of holy war. Threatening Iran will be living in hell. Yeah, I got a fiver on Trump using nuclear weapons, sooner rather than later. He just needs the right people in command willing to sign off on war crimes. Finding them among the MAGA sycophants won't be difficult.

There is an unhealthy amount of idiots on Listnook who are constantly making jokes about all of this. But the reality is that this is absolutely not good news for the millions of normal citizens in Iran. The IRGC can make all the memes they want, but their people are suffering.

truttatrotta 4 days ago +121
So why is he going to do that to them?
121
Presently_Absent 4 days ago +63
Because he's an unhinged maniac who equates tyrant leaders with an entire nation
63
MacaronMost 4 days ago +109
Because he can and nobody is going to stop him. Everyone knows that Trump is a d*****, but let’s just be honest here, nobody (that includes China and Russia) will actually put forth real effort to stop the US from bombing the shit out of Iran. They will send their meaningless sternly worded letters, but that’s the extent of it. Nobody is sanctioning the US, because the global market is too dependent on them. Any nation that does, is committing economic suicide, and no influential nation is risking their economy for Iran.

Hey, americans. Can you rein in your bloated and disgusting pedophile president? I have no love for the regime in Iran, but the answer to them should NEVER be to throw over 90 million of it's people into complete darkness and starvation. Sentencing the most vulnerable, the elderly, kids, the sick to a painful and agonizingly drawn out death. Where does it stop? Are you f****** kidding me?

He's got so used to have everything go his way, until China said no to his tariffs, EU said no to letting him have Greenland, Iran said no to opening the Straits of Hormuz and his military advisors said no to deploying ground troops. This second term of his Presidential office will come to him as the most humiliating pill he has to swallow. And he now wants young american soldiers pay their lives for it.

At least some, arguably most or even all, of those power plants are civilian infrastructure protected from attack by the Geneva Conventions. If Donald Trump dies of natural causes before ever seeing the inside of a jail cell, I really think that will be the final nail in the coffin of a once-great country.

Electrical-Lab-9593 4 days ago +101
he wont got to jail, they will say he is too sick to stand trial, but it is very important to RICO his co conspirators to send a message, Trump is just one man, he can't do all this without half the GOP helping him.

He could shoot a kid on broad daylight in the middle of Times Square and he‘d get away with it. He won’t ever see a jail cell from inside sadly.

Anyone seen the movie ‘A Bronx Tale’? Well, there is a seen where a bunch of bikers cause trouble in an Italian restaurant and are given the chance to leave without any consequences. They choose to stay, cause more trouble, but then the mafia owner of the restaurant locks the door and tells the bikers…”now you can’t leave.” In this ridiculous metaphor, the United States, is the bikers.

He only has one mode: threats and bullying. He’s a swindler who accidentally stumbled into higher positions by manipulating, threatening and bullying. Now that he is in the big leagues and is confronting big guys who know he is a pu*** he always chickens out He will extend the deadline 2 weeks and he will tone down the rhetoric in the coming days. He is a simple school yard bully that when confronted with tough guys tries to attack in other ways when confronted Edit: Like I said, two weeks suspension. It’s always two weeks later. Now watch the market manipulation. Then in a couple of days we are at it again

Note to any service member out there - “following orders” is not a justifiable defense to committing illegal actions. Remember that it’s your duty to not blindly follow the orders of a bumbling idiot that shits himself. If/when the adults get back in control, I’d hope that all these atrocities are investigated and everyone is held accountable from the top down.
