Oil prices were starting to rise today and the Dow was falling, so he needed to put out some meaningless positive-sounding news to manipulate the market.

We'll see what happens because god knows the market doesn't always react in a reasonable manner, but this statement should be very negative for markets. The reason markets reacted positively to the ceasefire and negotiations (even tenuous and unsuccessful ones) is because it signaled a coming end to the conflict and resumption of traffic through the Strait. It didn't really matter much if the details took some weeks to iron out, the war, for the markets appeared to be over. Now, though, things have been put on hold indefinitely (or until Iran submits a 'unified proposal,' whatever that means). The blockade remains in place, Iran has not signaled any willingness to allow transit through the Strait while under blockade, so we appear to be not at an eventual solution, but an impasse, that should be a worse outcome for markets.

yes.. a peace deal has been priced into the market or at least a peace talk. Now both events are "suspended" while straits still blocked causing higher oil price for longer, think the longer this drags on the worse it gets

Oil prices are completely irrational. There is no progress on the strait being open again, yet this is somehow not driving prices higher and higher.

Brent and WTI futures prices are being “controlled”. You should see what’s being paid for physical oil in the Asian markets, which hardly gets reported. Physical prices, which reflects real cargos, are at a huge premium over the “paper” futures prices.

If this is truly how the war ends, then I hope it goes down as a historic strategic failure.
Sure, Iraq was a shitshow, but at least Bush, Cheney, and Rumsfeld had a plan going in. We invaded, ousted Saddam, and tried to nation-build. They just didn’t have a plan for the day after, and the result was a forever war.
Here, Trump, Hegseth, and seemingly Netanyahu didn’t even plan. They thought they could just drop a few bombs and call it a day. When that didn’t work, they had to repeatedly change their reason for the war. It was clearly about regime change, but it turned out that the regime was stronger than the supreme leader and a bunch of other officials. Frankly, I’m surprised Israel, who has much more experience dealing with Iran, went along with the plan. There were also plans to arm the Kurds and have them invade; that never got off the ground.
Now, Trump wants out because he knows his war is unpopular, and in so doing, he has effectively surrendered to Iran. The Strait of Hormuz is *still* closed. Iran hasn’t done anything about its nuclear program. Iran’s leadership isn’t any less radical. The US genuinely didn’t accomplish any of its goals aside from bombing shit.

You haven't met many Americans, especially rural Americans. Unfortunately, the way their voting laws are set up gives the rural areas outsized power in all branches of government. Until that is fixed, they'll continue down the path to certain Idiocracy.
8
greatthebob3821 hr ago
+10
The negotiations did happen before the war with Witkoff and Kushner. It failed because the both of them couldn't understand the concessions Iran was willing to make, or at least that what the Iranians claimed. That's why Iran keeps requesting for Vance instead of the other 2. Iran blames the failure of the initial talks on them.
10
Brief_Hospital_176620 hr ago
+5
So they're asking for a different idiot then, because Vance knows just as little about geopolitics as the Chuckle Brothers that came before him.
5
Bored200119 hr ago

Iran probably thought that Vance would be at least smart enough to bring experts to the table. Iran was wrong about that.

>*"...why did he start the war in the first place!"*
Because, like his supporters, he is intensely ignorant. And that includes almost every subject. He can't even speak on 'business' in a serious manner because he's never been a businessman, or a real estate developer, or anything other than a rich toddler. He really might be the dumbest person to have ever lived and millions of Americans love that about him because it reflects them perfectly.
7

Literally do nothing and wait. Once gas hits $5 and the stock market drops 10%, he will capitulate. Iran has all the cards at this point.
5
Brief_Hospital_176620 hr ago
+7
To be fair, the longer this goes on the better it is for America. If prices are still high for everything, especially gas, the midterms could see an actual flip of the Senate, too. Right now I don't think that will happen, but if the pain keeps on, then it's a possibility.
And winning both the House and Senate might be the only shot America has at dealing with some of his corruption and crimes. I'm not holding my breath though, Americans have repeatedly shown their inability to recognise what is happening to their country and do something about it.

You can’t do a full blown invasion of Iran. You think Afghanistan is bad, Iran is worse. There’s mountains on all sides. They have nearly 70 million people. A full blown invasion is not feasible let alone possible. Another thing is that Iran still has a very loyal portion that’s anti American and supporting of the Mullahs. That would be worse for American soldiers with boots on the ground. No one wants to invade the country or would want to.

Yep Trump is trying to extend the ceasefire indefinitely but it's not in Iran's favour to do this while their ports are blocked, at some point they have to do something like threaten strikes on refineries in the region if blockade isn't lifted, then act if the blockade isn't lifted, because right now Iran is under siege while the US just kicks back waiting for Iran to fold.

The president reminds me of a bit Robin Williams had in the 80s about Muammar Gaddafii (paraphrased):
Muammar draws a line in the Mediterranean north of Libya: "You cross this line, *you die*!"
Muammar draws a line closer to Libya: "You cross this line, *you die*!"
Muammar draws a line even closer to Libya: "You cross this line, *you die!*"
Muammar ends with: "Fine. If you come to my house, *I'm not opening the door*."

It's been clear for weeks now that Trump has zero appetite for continuing the war. He knows the US would need to put boots on the ground to have a good chance of achieving objectives and also knows that option is unpalatable, even to his supporters. So, what we've seen the past few weeks is bluster and brinksmanship to try to at least get some concessions from Iran in order to sell the attack as anything other than a pointless debacle, but at the end of the day, these threats were unlikely to ever be backed by action.
This whole mess is an embarrassment, and has done serious and likely irreparable damage to US soft power and influence that took decades to build, and what's worse, anyone familiar with Iran could have told you this is exactly how things would play out.

He never should've pushed so hard about the uranium.
Weeks ago, he should've said that the US achieved its objectives of greatly diminishing Iran's ballistic missile stockpile and destroying its navy and keeping them from further enriching uranium. Then, he could've declared victory and withdrawn before the Strait was closed.

US soft power has been dropping further in the toilet since 2016 aside from a brief plateau through 2021-2025.

Yes... he keeps threatening mass casualties in hopes ls Iran will fold. They will not fold... so you keep pushing this "ceasefire" until it falls out of the news cycle.
Countries likely pay tolls until someone else works with all countries to make a new deal with Iran. To remove tolls and disarm nuclear capabilities.

Y’all are silly. This isn’t the US surrendering! It’s simply a plea for a perpetual ceasefire!

The actual story here is the lack of detail about what 'seriously fractured' means in the context of the Iranian government.

Trump has two options:
1. Up stakes and scurry home only to be known as **America's Biggest Loser**
2. Double down, invade the Iranian coast along with escorting tankers through the strait, all of which just means he will lose *even harder*
IMO, he's morbidly obese already, so being known as the Biggest Loser would be the healthy choice

"Seriously fractured government" I wonder why that could be? Maybe bombing and murdering a nation's leaders leads to the nation having a fractured leadership.... Remember when he said they were hoping to talk to people but weren't sure if they had murdered them yet?
None of this should have happened. Trump and Bini threw the world in to economic turmoil for no good reason.

Yeah no shit, killing most of their high-ranking government officials intentionally (looking at you Israel) on the first day of this “operation” will make it near impossible to have a semi-structured government you can negotiate with lol
