Even during his 1st term, before Jan 6. 1.2M+ Americans died from COVID. Per capita US had **more than 4x the avg global rate** of COVID deaths. Millions more Americans are still suffering from long term health effects (long COVID).
I think it's fair to lay the blame for a lot of those deaths at Trump's feet. He downplayed, denied, fantasized, and promoted conspiracy theories and woo BS about COVID from Day 1.
There's no doubt in my mind that more sober, sane messaging from a different executive could have saved hundreds of thousands of lives. Instead we still have millions of anti-maskers and COVID denialists today, and even more vaccine conspiracy theorists than we started with.

The only weird reverse alien logic I can think of is that the military thinks it’s damaging so many things that Iran can’t use that money meaningfully to harm America, which is wild.
No.. actually Trump probly thinks that. Or Stephen miller.
Reports have already said both China and Russia are supplying military hardware to them, as well as at least Russian intelligence. Having satellites and Chinese gps is a big help to them since U.S. GPS is easily blocked by them since it’s a military controlled and run satellite program.
It’s like a feedback loop.

This is a 50-50 for Russia. It helps them but simultaneously goes against their interest as well. Iran is a major Russian ally that provided them with drones, and gives them a foot in the door in the middle east.
The higher oil prices are nice, but if the Iranian regime where to seriously weaken or even worse fall, then Russia will be in a worse situation.

Yeah it's a life line for now, but longer term it's probably bad for Russia, and it's already bad in the way the Russia and Putin looks weak and irrelevant as they cannot help their allies to any serious extent, ie with military presence. For dictators and empires, it's all about looking strong.
5
DirkdekingMar 27, 2026

Russia can never directly help it's ally if the US is directly involved. But in the past at least they would be much more pro active in arming Iran and trying to find a diplomatic solution. Like they did with Syria following Obama's red line moment. Now they can't even do that anymore.

Completely depends on if the regime survives it. The only way they go down is with a full Iraq style ground invasion, or a revolution much larger than even the one in January.

There is no way in hell an Iraq style ground invasion works out well. The Iraq war turned into a quagmire, and they had half the population, a third of the land, and two fewer superpowers helping them out. We also had easier ways to access Iraq.
I hope we just make up some stupid victory condition, pretend we won, pack up and go home.

Yep. There’s no way Iran wins in a direct confrontation with the US military, but ambush and optics will absolutely destroy the political will for war in the US.
The moment a video of a US soldier or marine being blown apart by a drone in 4K, the video will circulate the Internet and make it to their family before they get official notice.
It’s not like 00s IED videos that were filmed on 128p 1st gen camera phones and you couldn’t see anything. This will be clear as day and kill morale back home for anyone besides boomer warhawks that want to live vicariously through young men. The propaganda value for Iran is huge. Even a fraction of casualties suffered compared to Iraq and Afghanistan will drive more revulsion. The war needs to be near flawless for the US to keep initiative.
Iran “just” has to survive.

I find it hard to fathom how the US could ever win in Iran short of just straight nuking them. The IRGC is like million strong standing, the geography of Iran is far far more rugged and mountainous compared to Iraq which is a lot flatter. The IRGC is also better equipped than Iraqis were. At to that they have been prepping for 40 years, have extensive tunnel networks and a population of 90m people who could be called up. Adding that the US would have to maintain long extensive logistical networks and the sheer expense with the state of US national debt, I just can’t see what win condition they could set themselves to achieve and do it. They can’t just walk into Tehran is like 1100m up surrounded by mountains, you’d have to slog troops through constant kill one valleys that they aren’t trained for and lacking heavy armoured support. If the ultimate goal of the IRGC and Iran is not die, they have a hell of a lot to throw at the problem to do that.
1
Fenix42Mar 27, 2026

The key thing to rember is Iran has been building defenses designed to drag things out as much as possible. They know the US does not have the political will for an extended fight.

Not to mention geography is in their favour as well. Iraq is a mostly flat country and even there it was a shit show. In Iran even the conventional part of a war could kill thousands of US troops.
What he is contemplating is a limited ground invasion though by seizing a few strategic islands. But even that is very risky, and those small islands can be turned into missile death traps once they are taken with little cover.

The US isn't as incompetent as Russia. In all of WWII the US only suffered like 400k deaths. I think Iran is going to be one of the toughest opponents, but they still hold no candle to the combined might of the axis powers.

Drone warfare has rapidly increased casualties. Sure, the US won't send meat waves like Russia, but the US military is entirely unprepared to deal with drone warfare. If Trump invades Iran, we are going to see tens of thousands of casualties in the first year at a bare minimum. If he just tries to take Kharg Island, then the casualties will be limited to thousands in the first year.
12

Russia has used small tactical assault teams for several years now, and have a high degree of drone combat teams now. They are not the same army they were before the Ukraine war, or even 1 year into the war. Likewise Ukraine is a much stronger army now, and is much different than they were 1 year in or before the war began.
Being the aggressor will always cause more casualties than a defender though unless a huge technological gap exists or terrible defensive leadership.

Desert Storm was the result of almost a year of preparation and build-up, with the backing of a massive alliance and, not to put too fine a point on it, an absolute genius running things.
You can say what you will about morality and whether or not the first Iraq war was a good thing or not, but Schwarzkopf knew what the f*** he was doing. I'm not so sure about the current bunch.

Iran is also a large country with rugged terrain and almost 100 million people. There’s very little way that the US can effectively engage in a boots on the ground conflict without a level of causalities that would be shocking to the American populace

[In 2002 the US ran a war game](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millennium_Challenge_2002 ) to simulate what it would be like to invade a Middle Eastern country like Iran by sea. The American side got completely wrecked on day 1 of 14, so they decided to start it again but nerfed the other team and made them follow a script so that the American team would win.

If all they can think of is in symmetrical terms and fail to realize the power of an asymmetrical enemy then yeah, America looks hella bad ass and completely unstoppable.
Defeating the main army is only part of a modern war though. Trying to defeat the insurgency after the main army is beaten is a task America has not been capable of achieving with any degree of certainty at all. Killing a bunch of sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, husbands, wives, uncles, aunts, grandfathers, grandmothers and so on tends to do that. The more we try the more enemies we create.

Sitting at the dentist office I saw a commercial comparing anti-semitism to injustice against Blacks (in a high school setting). There are 2 new billboards - one actually comparing the hate of Jews to dibs that has an acual white plastic chair specifically tailored for Chicago expressway drivers. 61
ArrowsOfFateMar 27, 2026

Irans population of 94m is a lot higher population size than ww2 Germany. Germany had a population of 70-80 million. But they tolerated approximately 5.3 million soldier deaths, 3 million civilians, 1 million soldiers MIA. They caused millions of casualties upon their enemies before they were defeated by the combined might of the Soviet Union 90%, Britain, France, Australia, Canada, and America alongside others.

The Soviet Union was embarrassingly ill-prepared to fight their ex-allie. Their losses were staggering and if it weren't for the nkvd forcing the front lines to fight while shooting deserters they might have lost the war altogether.

Very true, but they still managed to endure the losses of entire armies and rebuilt them.
With what the Germans were doing to the Soviet and polish people, NKVD keeping the soldiers motivated was a better fate than if they surrendered. Virtually all war prisoners between the two were killed in one way or another.

What's the stat 90% of US history spent at war, imagine in the future when they dont control the narrative how they will be viewed. I suppose many people living within an imperialist regime over the years have not realised how bad they are , I certainly didn't think about our past in the UK growing up and it was taught as a great time in school, suppose thats also why they love to defund education, dont want the masses smart enough to see reality.

Iran has over 90 million people. He would need at least a hundred thousand for a ground invasion. And, and troops on Kharg Island will be sitting ducks as close as it is to the mainland. Iran’s geography is also a major issue with lots of places for locals to hide and ambush troops at mountain passes. The country is huge and much more of challenge than Iraq or Afghanistan. He has to be getting briefings on all that, but probably ignoring it.

I said in another comment that trapping US forces on Kargh Island would make Khe Sanh look like a walk in the park. In the grand scheme of things, the siege of Khe Sanh was mostly a diversion as the N. Vietnamese army and Viet Cong prepared for the Tet Offensive. The Iranians will defend Kargh Island with everything they have.
During the 8 year long Iraq/Iran War in the 80s they never allowed Iraq to take it.

This is reminiscent of the lead up to Desert Shield/Storm. We had staging available in Saudi Arabia which enabled us to prepare for our subsequent invasion. Military logistics is what wins Wars, inadequate supply chains lose Wars. One simply has to look at Napoleon and Hitler to see where logistical issues resulted on catastrophic defeats. The last time Iran was invaded the [Anglo-Soviet](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anglo-Soviet_invasion_of_Iran#Invasion) invaded from Russia, Iraq, and the Persian Gulf and involved 3 armies. I hope they have prepared for this.
