This is mostly because Trump literally can not read. That's not a joke, I am like 95% sure that Trump can not actually process information via reading. There's a small chance that he can read, and he simply refuses to do it under any circumstances, but the evidence overwhelmingly suggests he is functionally illiterate for real. Trump can recognize words and pronounce them off a teleprompter, but that's not reading. I think if you sat him down and gave Trump a 4th grade reading comprehension exam, he would fail. He has never read a book, including the books he "wrote," he has never read or written an email, he signs his name to the occasional letter and social media posts, but I'm pretty sure he dictates those to others. We really need to start being way more aggressive about mocking and bullying everyone who supports Trump. You have to be so f****** stupid if you still think Donald Trump is smart enough to be president, there's just no way around that. There are no smart, reality based arguments that can be made to justify supporting Donald Trump, and we should point and laugh at everyone who hasn't figured that out yet.

Exactly. Sometimes when Trump is reading off the teleprompter, he will go off script and make some comments about what he just said. But usually only when he realizes what he is saying after he says it out loud. Because he’s not processing the words on the script/teleprompter, he’s just pronouncing them. We’ve even seen him write phonetic notes to himself, like “Alcaida”, instead of Al Qaeda. He is functionally and clinically illiterate.

I mean, occasionally he'll read a word like 'groceries' and go off on a ten-minute tangent about how unusual and old-fashioned the word 'groceries' is. So there's some kind of awareness of what words he's reading, just not the typical kind (where the person understands what words mean)

I think it is very likely that Trump got a college degree without ever reading. We know Trump paid someone to take the SATs for him, probably because Trump was not capable of getting through the exam, never mind getting a good score. So I have no doubt that he would have also paid people to do his school work. Plus Trumps college professor, who died long before Trump got into politics, told everyone who would listen that Trump was the dumbest student he ever had.

I'm a reading specialist. We know Trump can fluently read because we have a lot of evidence of him reading fluently. Comprehension correlates with fluency at 90%, so that's probably fine too. And if he can read now, he almost certainly could read then, when he was younger and his brain worked better. I suspect that he doesn't read much though, but probably not from lack of ability. He's impulsive, lazy and incurious. He was one of a lot of people throughout history that could read fine, but simply chose not to do much of it.

The asylum thing is so funny. Trump can not grasp that political asylum seekers have no connection to asylums for the criminally insane. Many people have tried to explain it to him, just like many people have tried to teach Trump how tariffs work, but he refuses to learn. Trump also thinks stealth planes are invisible for real, he wanted to nuke a hurricane, he thinks solar power doesn’t work at night, he thinks the problem with America’s immigration system is that a steady stream of scary brown people are flowing into the country over the southern border, and a big giant wall is all that’s needed to stop them. When Trump was told during his first term that the sections of the wall he built were not working, he suggested building a moat around it and filling it with snakes. Every solution Trump comes up with is the exact same solution Bugs Bunny would use, because Trump genuinely believes the world works like it does in cartoons. You can not overstate how stupid he is.

Many people cannot read well. And it’s certainly a hindrance, but many can compensate by listening. You gotta be pretty intelligent to do that well. This guy is dumb and even if he could read, would not be able to comprehend and evaluate information as complex as the issues are presenting with a war. Then you add onto that his aging brain and probably frontal temporal dementia and you got pretty much a three year old trying to figure this out and make world-changing decisions. And teenagers who spend money on horses and jets with bedrooms advising him.

He has some instincts as a showman and for telling people what they want to hear, but there is no thought or substance behind any of it. Right, there have been situations like that which do suggest Trump can read. But there have also been situations, like when the British ambassador gave Trump an invitation to something, where Trump pretty clearly did not know what it said. That could be an eyesight issue, but I think it goes deeper than that. The closest friend Trump has ever had in his life even said that Trump can’t read, and I generally don’t take Jeffrey Epstein at his word, but in this case he probably knew what he was talking about.
