Oh boy, I hope they both like McDonalds food! But in all seriousness, I hope it is a productive meeting. Even a meeting organized by a Trump white house that leads to lasting peace is a good thing, especially if it is peace on just terms that sees Lebanon keep its territory.

How can it be a productive meeting? this is all performative. israel is not fighting lebanon they are fighting hezbollah. which is not going to be part of these negotations. israel is going to negotiate with a government that has ZERO influence on hezbollah and are unwilling to fight them whatsoever. so it doesn't even matter what "agreements" they come up with. hezbollah is not going to comply and the lebanese government has no power to do anything about it. This whole thing is a complete joke and will lead to nowhere.

Yeah this is a fugazi so trump can pump the stock market like he’s doing claiming there’s going to be peace any minute now with Iran. He’s been saying all week there would be peace “in the next couple days” and still no meeting scheduled after they walked out of the last one.

Israel and Lebanon have a shared interest in eliminating Hezbollah. Unlike Palestine (in terms of Hamas), the Lebanese government knows this, even though they have no ability to act against them. So in theory, they could look for a framework to work together
9
supx3 2 days ago +4
It’s not performative. In the past this would have been impossible with Hezbollah’s stranglehold on the country. Just wanting to look into the cause of the massive explosion in the harbor nearly caused a civil war in the past. This is proof that Hezbollah is weak and does not control the country anymore. The Lebanese government is still worried about a civil war if they try to crackdown on Hezbollah themselves which is why they haven’t done anything significant. There is lots of work to be done but maybe, just maybe, this can lead to something good.

If Lebanon meets with Israel, Hezbollah will probably double down and create more problems for Lebanon. I don't see the meeting happening

Fighting hezbollah...by killing a 1 year old infant at their dad's funeral...or doing a targeted strike on a anti-hezbollah leader in Beirut. They're annexing land. Settlers will move into this "buffer area" and then they'll have to annex more land in the name of the settlers to make a new buffer to protect them.
-13
Expln 2 days ago +1
Surely, surely. Then don't give them an "excuse" by keeping hezbollah around. which is terrible for lebanon anyway.

Israel is currently flattening Lebanon just like Gaza! Iran included Lebanon in the 10 point deal so both countries would be at peace but BiBi continues to bomb civilian infrastructure in the Middle East. Who knows what DT is doing. He's playing "Quien es mas macho?" when he should be getting out of the war or pushing up daisies.

I don't want Israel seizing territory but I also understand the rationale in occupying it minus a peace treaty. Hezbollah bombarded Israel's north, operated in the south in violation of the 2024 ceasefire, the UNIFIL peacekeepers did nothing to stop that, and same with the Lebanese army. I recall reading the testimony of a former UNIFIL peacekeeper who explained how the Lebanese army wouldn't take action against Hezbollah even when the UNIFIL reported their activity. I don't always like what Israel does but when you strip things down to the bare logic I understand the frustration of Israelis. Now granted where it gets complicated is when Israel attempts to create facts on the ground like with the Golan Heights and Syria, so on the flip side I also understand the skepticism towards Israel and landgrabs. I just want recognition of the Israeli perspective whether one agrees or disagrees.

I recognize the use and efforts of peace keeping forces. I have no objections to such operations, and I think there can be a world where Israeli troops can take part in such operations to help against terrorist organizations like Hezbollah. Let's be open and honest, call a s**** and s****. They aren't doing that in Lebanon. They say that is what they are doing as a cover story. We all know this is another annexation. The very moment that they have military control of a region, they will start moving in settlers. Israel doesn't have the credibility to claim otherwise. At this point I think it would be far better to let some other country in to conduct peace keeping. Maybe Turkiye, those guys dislike Iran and its proxies such as Hezbollah, and frankly would probably treat the Lebanese people with a little more sensitivity. But that really is more up to the people of Lebanon than me, living safely in a country very far away.

Virtual-History-6099 2 days ago +39
Keep in mind Israel had settlers in the Sinai yet they still removed those people to make peace with Egypt. Israel offered to return the Golan Heights in exchange for recognition from Syria. It may be too late for that now but Israel is willing to exchange land for peace.

If Lebanon is ok with a UN led peace keeping mission to replace the Israeli soldiers then I think that would be great. No issue at all with that. I don't think it is likely to happen since the UN is a slow moving machine and somebody is bound to veto every step of the way, but I like the optimism.
-13
EagleRise 2 days ago +32
Are you... Are you not aware of how well the previous peace keeping mission went? It was like in its 40th year of disarming Hezbollah i think?

RadiumJuly 2 days ago -26
Hey, my first suggestion was Turkiye, it was some other guy that linked the UN. Go complain to him. My point has always been that whoever you send in should be with the consent of the Lebanese people.
-26
PikachuFloorRug 2 days ago +14
> My point has always been that whoever you send in should be with the consent of the Lebanese people. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Nations_Security_Council_Resolution_1701 > The Lebanese cabinet unanimously approved the resolution on 12 August 2006.
14
RadiumJuly 2 days ago -4
You do realize that you aren't saying anything? Just linking a prior resolution doesn't actually mean anything. Use your words buddy.
-4
PikachuFloorRug 2 days ago +27
> Just linking a prior resolution doesn't actually mean anything It's a UN resolution to send UN troops (UNIFIL) which included your suggested Turkiye to help the Lebanese Army disarm Hezbollah and remove them from southern Lebanon. Lebanon agreed to it. Here we are nearly 20 years later, and neither the Lebanese army nor UNIFIL removed or disarmed Hezbollah.

This is another meeting like Zelenskyy at the Whitehouse. They’re going to tell Lebanon to surrender their territory and let Israel do what they want
3
RadiumJuly 2 days ago
I hope so. Having it so clear and in plain sight, for all to see, would be refreshing, I'm tired of the deniability. Having them outright state in front of the media their goals of annexation would really help show everybody exactly what is going on. Zelenskyy being asked to say thank you was a wake up moment for a lot of people, showing that the Trump regime was no friend to Ukraine. I can only hope Lebanon is afforded the same sincerity.

If he isn't also inviting Hezbollah leadership it'll just be PR and photo ops. Lebanese government doesn't control Hezbollah and can't stop them from attacking or defending themselves. Israel isn't going to just go back home and leave Lebanon alone unless they're convinced Hezbollah is completely disarmed. So I doubt there will be much productive conversation. That being said I hope I'm wrong.

Lebanon couldn’t do that even if they wanted to do (which they actually probably do)

az78 2 days ago +15
They need to invite Lebanon and Hezbollah to the White House for peace talks. The conflict with Israel is only a result of the Lebanese government couldn't contain the parasite that is Hezbollah from having de facto control of the rest of the state.

Israel is acting like maniacs so they definitely need to be involved . I’m just not sure how having Israel meet with the Lebanese government helps.

Will they just sit there in the Oval Office with Trump, while trump shits his pants and forces them to sit there and smell it? Are those the “high level” talks?
17
oshikandela 2 days ago -3
It's more like Isreal will whisper something into Trump's ear, Trump repeating half off what they said only to drift off and talk about Ivanka and the peace price and canines and windmills. Then he will leave. Leaving both representatives from Israel and Lebanon sitting awkwardly opposite each other. They'll exchange a few diplomatic words asserting their already established positions. Then the tensions in the middle East will grow

What good is it to invite the Lebanese leaders when they have no control over Hezbollah? They are powerless to tell them what to do or to stop doing.

Unless the talks are how to work together to disarm Hezbollah, it all feels a bit meaningless. You can make all the agreements and positive statements you want, but the reality is that Lebanon lacks control over its own territory so is in no position to resolve the cause of the conflict. I'd love to be proven wrong. I'd love UNIFIL to actually serve a f****** purpose. But I don't know what these talks can really achieve.

Disarm? How good it works in the West Bank? The West doesn't even get to know their tragedy unless they or their allies are counterattacked. I'm not supporting terrorism. But I've started to think that it might not be possible to end terrorism when it is the only method through which the Middle East is perceived.
-3
vivianhtlee 2 days ago +1
A realistic approach is let the Lebanon government holds the army. The government keeps the army under control and maintains ability to protect themselves and counterattack if they're under attack or "settled".
