Trump is contemplating the sheer folly of boots on the ground in Iran. How did it come to this? | Simon Tisdall
After the anguish of Iraq and Afghanistan, it’s almost unthinkable the US would again send troops to the Middle East – but its president is desperate and narcissistic, says foreign affairs commentator Simon Tisdall

History is filled with small wars that did not start small. That was just major lesson out of Vietnam. Bibi knew this which is why he has been trying to bait the US into making an attack like this for the last 3 decade. Trump has done more the ensure Iran gets a nuclear weapon that anyone else in history. First he made it clear that negotiating with the US is pointless cause next administration can back out in 4 years. Second he made sure Iran know they really need it, cause US and Isreal can attack you with no provocation. Don't get nukes or we will attack you, only works if you have not already attacked them. Third he forced Iran to test out their actual control over the straight, and showed it was an effective method to project power globally. Trump is so desperate to keep oil prices down, he unsanctioned some Iranian oil just to get it to the market. Fourth, he showed that US is no longer able to make an alliance for an invasion like Iraq. And fifth, by Tacoing like he always does, he showed the US has no actual appetite to mount a full scale ground war, to actually stop them from getting nuclear weapons. Knowing all of that, as a rational actor, why would you not try to get nukes. It is the only thing that makes you safer and they have shown they can't really stop you right now. The rational choice is the get nukes asap.

You forgot that he killed their entire leadership that was holding back their development of nuclear weapons. Now, we have a pro-nukes guy in charge who we just murdered his entire family.

The response Russia showed thoroughly the benefits of having a nuke. It puts you in a different tier where the rest of the world will treat you with kid gloves because they are afraid of nuclear war. Trump just sealed the deal. Now they know the power they have without a nuke that they can wield to keep everyone from invading while they develop one.
73
Snoo3763 Mar 29, 2026 +11
First he ripped up Obama's deal which actually would have prevented Iran from ever getting nukes, but that's ancient history at this point.
11
Slggyqo Mar 29, 2026 +20
> test out their actual control over the straight He’s basically backed us into a corner where we go to proper all our war or we cede power over the strait to Iran. Basically a massive kill switch on the global economy through the oil and gas industry that underpins it. His administration’s constant moves to hamstring any other forms of energy have only exacerbated the issue.

> Trump is so desperate to keep oil prices down, he unsanctioned some Iranian oil just to get it to the market. He also lifted Russian oil sanctions as well.

pargofan Mar 29, 2026 +5
Why is Iran getting nukes such big deal to the US? Nobody else in the world outside of Israel seems to care.
5
MittenCollyBulbasaur Mar 29, 2026 +6
Since we gave Israel the technology for nukes of their own, how many other countries have gained nuclear weapon technology? India, Pakistan, and North Korea.
6
andoesq Mar 29, 2026 +13
Another Muslim country having a nuke and establishing MAD with Israel would limit Israel's power in the region. A Shia country having a nuke while US Arab allies (ie Saudi Arabia) don't would create a massive power imbalance in the region. Finally, there's legitimate concern that a theocratic regime is not subject to the rationality that governs the politics of nuclear deterrence. E.g. we know Russia won't use a nuke in it's invasion of Ukraine, but if Iran attacked Iraq would we be confident that they wouldn't use a nuke? Or would they give a nuke to a Shia ally that's getting bombed into the stone age? All the more reason for Trump and Netanyahu to not be idiots and push Iran into a corner where obtaining a nuke is the only option
13
meusrenaissance Mar 29, 2026 +2
This scrutiny over religious zealotry is dubious when the only nation to have used nukes, against civilian targets no less, is the US itself.
2
yeungx Mar 30, 2026 +2
It is a huge deal, because your neighbour having nukes makes you want to have nuke and so on. Iran have nukes means Saudi and Afghanistan are gonna want nukes to protect themselves from Iran, Saudi having nukes is gonna threaten Jordan, Egypt, for sure so they are gonna want nukes, and so on and so on. We see the middle east through a western lens, so it is just US and Isreal vs "middle east" but there are a lot of actors with a lot of history and tension. This situation is what the nuclear non-proliferation in the 1970 that ended the cold war was supposed to avoid. Each additional person getting nukes means their neighbours would feel like they need nukes to stay safe. Soon enough, every small regional conflict carry with it the threat of nuclear apocalypses. It will be like WWI where a small regional conflict pulled in everyone, but this time, everyone has nukes.

I wish it were that simple. If barack Obama had not entered the presidential race and John McCain had won, Israel would have had their war with Iran in 2008. All because of the surprise popularity of Obama's speech at the Democratic national convention in 2004. I fear it was inevitable and only delayed by one outsider and a pandemic.
13
Bittererr Mar 29, 2026 +18
You can endlessly back up and find another turning point in history where things could have turned out differently. If the 2000 election had gone very very slightly differently would 2008 have looked anything like it did?
18

Our country seems to move in a certain direction regardless of who’s president. Obama renewed the Patriot Act in 2011.

5
limaconnect77 Mar 29, 2026 +5
It’s much more complex than that- as just one major example, women self-hating and not voting for Hillary. Another one…Biden and his crew (the wife plus that inner circle of wormtongues) f****** up any chances Harris had at building some sort of meaningful momentum going into that last election. Also, a woman and not white - the electorate didn’t fancy her.

6

Physically Brooklyn and queens are on Long Island. However colloquially Long Island is only referenced for Nassau and Suffolk counties. As Brooklyn and queens are their own counties and part of the larger New York City limits.
8

6

Just saw your comment. I responded similarly in my comment below.👍🏼
2
Macrosophy Mar 29, 2026 +2
The NYC borough of Queens is at the same a county of New York State…Queens County is part of the geographical Long Island as is Brooklyn, which is Kings County of New York State. “Long Island” is also the colloquial term for the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Mainly because of the general suburban nature, etc. Therefore @Accurate-Bird1142…you were correct the first time…or accurate. I was born/raised in NYC (Staten Island & Queen) later grew up in Nassau County…native.

There was only ever one reason: a black woman was running. Everything else was just justifying their decision not to vote for her without admitting the truth.
17
HeadfulOfSugar Mar 29, 2026 +11
I’ll never understand how after what happened with Hillary, they decided that *this* election was the one to try to run a black woman for president. She was extremely qualified, a career politician, already knew the White House inside & out, and was well spoken, etc. & still just the fact that Donald was male was all that mattered. Like this country was barely ready to elect a black man & went into a collective psychosis because of it. When it comes to one of the most important elections in US history just run literally any middle-aged white man like you functionally *always* have, prosecute the former admin, reinforce democratic institutions & guardrails, deradicalize everybody, stabilize the economy, & then try later down the line when the country seems ready. If the past decade didn’t open their eyes to how unbelievably racist/sexist the United States is I think they’ll stay shut forever lol
11
Litterball Mar 29, 2026 +14
She was a fine choice. The fact that Trump was rehabilitated three years after causing an insurrection is everything you need to know about the attention span of the U.S. voter, and the fact that he wasn't tried and convicted in these three years tells you everything you need to know about U.S. democratic institutions. Fascism was always going to knock on the door sooner or later and blaming Kamala or the Democratic party misses the forest for the trees.
14
busterak47 Mar 29, 2026 +4
I mean, they didn’t want to. The DNC was content to rally behind Biden again despite him going back on his one-term pledge. Then his brain melting in the debate made running him untenable. There was no time for a primary, so the VP got the gig by default. And that rubbed enough people the wrong way, like it or not - plus the ratfuckery that was going on around Gaza. And so here we are.

It's funny (well, not funny really because none of this is funny, but you know what I mean) because, while that correspondence dinner sparked off his decision to run in 2016, he actually floated a run back in in 2000. You can see a Trump sign in the video for RATM's [Sleep Now In The Fire](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kl4wkIPiTcY). Amusing to me is the fact that, as a die-hard young conservative at the time who ran in the online circles that ended up becoming MAGA, Trump was seen as something of a joke who'd be disastrous for the country.

He will say one thing today, and do a different thing tomorrow. He says, "we aren't going to strike," and then the Israelis strike. This can only reinforce the Iranians in realizing that this is not the time to negotiate, as Trump and his cronies in general simply are not capable. Israel is always pushing for escalation, and for whatever reasons, the US allows itself to be pulled in. Some attempt *now* to answer the allegedly mysterious question, "how did it come to this?" Sometimes the answer seems obvious, since the US has a long history of serving Israel's dream of "A Greater Israel," as well as pursuing the rewards of plundering other nations and controlling the whole region through domination. But now, we risk nuclear war as never before.

I’m 100% sure the folks in, around and including Trump expected Iran to fold completely after the first strike. No plans were made for next steps if that didn’t happen. Now, there is no plan outside of making more threats. Iran seems to be more than willing to call trumps bluffs, so I foresee them continuously baiting him into escalation. With near zero global support for the US actions and the lack of support here at home, Trump is painting us so fast into a corner it’s unprecedented.

> How did it come to this? Israel baited Trump into bombing Iran and now Trump doesn’t know how to get out of the situation because there is no easy way to stop the war. Iran will continue to attack American allies in the region with the goal of having those countries kick the US military bases out of their countries for access to the strait of Hormuz. The US will end up sending in boots on the ground because they have to secure the shoreline around the strait of Hormuz, but they’ll never be able to send enough troops to fully topple the Iranian regime. The US has already lost by starting the war in the first place but Trump can’t admit defeat so there are going to be more innocent lives lost.

So now here he is breaking everything and destroying everything the generations before had built. donald will send in troops because he doesn't listen to anyone because he thinks he is the smartest person ever and knows it all

How did it come to this? Obama roasted Trump one time after Trump helped run a child sex trafficking ring and here we are.
2
CMG30 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Americans, you need to impeach and remove Trump from office before he send a million of your sons and daughters to war. Then you need to put a leader in charge who can do whatever is necessary to de-escalate before you meet your Waterloo in the middle east.

Indaflow Mar 29, 2026 +2
Trump isn’t contemplating sh*t. Here is here to sabotage us and has a complete disregard for life particularly the lives of our soldiers. He doesn’t care at all.  They are pissing through our debt trying to saddle us with us much debt as they can while they steal as much as they can for themselves.  As long as he staves off Epstein repercussions, he may even go Nuclear before he is gone and is happy to just ruin it all for the rest of us.

Collectively, our political parties and their avid followers have lost their way. Our politics and our capitalism have become so intertwined that governance depends on who has the money. More so than in the past, I think, because of the fast moving tech innovations, social media, and AI fear. All manner of beliefs now have access to bully pulpits. Religion has become dogma and used to lash out at those who don't believe. Human lives are fodder for powerful interests. Trump is the King of the Dump where all good ideas and intentions are thrown to make way for personal interests, fame, and wealth. Our is not a religious calamity, it is a human failure. The USA is now the USED States of America, or something more fitting and sensible but not good.

Trump is a fascist moron and *everyone* who supports him are nazi loving pieces of shit.
2

Bullshit. He isn’t contemplating anything, let alone the concept that his war is a folly.
2
thebait123 Mar 29, 2026 +2
Trump diddled kids. More and more Epstein shit came out. He needed a distraction so he dropped bombs on Iran and in his pants. Israel probably has some good info on him as his good ole pal Ghislaine's father was part of Mossad. So yeah.
2
Beer-Me Mar 29, 2026 +2
Trump isn't contemplating shit. His people still love him, and he doesn't give a damn who dies as a part of this war that he started. All he cares is that this is distracting people from the Epstein files and he has his excuse to try and cancel midterms, just like he accused Obama of planning to do.
2
trisul-108 Mar 29, 2026 +2
He's exactly like Putin whom he adores and emulates. He underestimated the opponent, dove in with intent to cause them to surrender, but people defending their homes do not react like that. Trump, who values nothing but himself, simply cannot understand patriotism or simple defence of the homeland. And just like Putin, he cannot back down, because that would be the end of him politically. He has to escalate and commit more and more to a losing game. Iran is for Trump's what Ukraine was for Putin. The only difference is that Iran has a despicable regime while Ukraine was invaded for wanting to be free.

Iran scooping up a bunch of Yank hostages would really bring this all full circle.

1
WillingArm2463 Mar 29, 2026 +1
It all starts with no plan from somebody who believes they are always right. There is no possible way -zero- that soldiers on the ground could force Iran's hand in mere months.

The sheer folly of electing Trump not just once, but twice.
1
Vost570 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I don't know how sending ten or twenty thousand troops in against opposing regulars and militia numbering well over a million works. Even if the US considers the objectives limited that doesn't mean the Iranians will agree. Even all the yes-men in Trump's DoD leadership have to realize how bad of an idea this is. I personally really hope the plan is not to cause a small military disaster that will create so much outrage with the US public that they can reinstate a draft and touch off a major war, as well as grasp for a reason to say they can "suspend" holding the mid-terms.
1
ColdBostonPerson77 Mar 29, 2026 +1
If anyone watched the boys, homelander is based on Trump. A lot of the characters are based on real people and it’s comical how right it is. Trump is surrounded by yes people who just heap praise with no critical thinking or intelligent honest opinions

Trump learned from his 1st term. Then, he didn't have nearly enough placaters in the White House who would do his bidding. He was also able to stack the Federal Court system, which has aided the Project 25 agenda this term.

When you start a war with the main goal of getting accusations you're a pedophile off the page, you quickly wind up having no actual plan for how to fight the Pedophile Distraction War
1
ReleaseFromDeception Mar 29, 2026 +2
One function of the war is distraction, yes. But if you look at the bigger picture with what is going on in Venezuela, this all seems to be about capturing access to nonrenewable energy and controlling the petroeconomy.
2
ArtisticAd7795 Mar 29, 2026 +1
I don’t agree with what the United States is doing but everyone is looking at the domestic 'why,' but they’re missing the 'what.' This isn’t about Iran; it’s about China. In the current geopolitical board, Iran and Venezuela are just pawns. By moving toward a ground presence on places like Kharg Island, the U.S. isn't trying to 'spread democracy' or 'nation-build' it's executing a Resource Enclosure Strategy. If you control the valves to Beijing’s energy supply, you own their manufacturing growth and their seat at the negotiating table. To this administration, the risk of boots on the ground is worth it to maintain global hegemony by creating an economic chokehold on their only real rival

A moron was elected to spite the Democrats, and Democrats participated with their apathy
1
mredofcourse Mar 29, 2026 +1
I don't know how Trump gets out of the mess he created entirely on his own, but ~~boots on the ground~~ body bags in the media from a war we can't win is not only not the answer, but would be the greatest political blunder, by far, in US history. I just can't fathom that he'd hold-my-beer George W Bush. It's like at some point I expect him to hold a press conference and say, "ok, I'm going to do this unless you all STFU about Epstein".

There is no way trump is “contemplating the sheer folly”. He doesn't think like that. He is ego driven and thinks he is all powerful, folly is an insult to his ego.

It came to this because every administration has blindly backed Israel even when they have been found to commit genocide. Had they not attacked Iran, no one would be in this situation. Had trump not been an utter lying gullible moron, he could have told Netanyahu they were on their own if they attacked Iran. But instead, trump has fomo as well as knowing he would look like an utter baffoon after all his tweets on his knock-off social media rag. But thanks maga, higher energy costs, more global instability, higher chance of Russia invading more of Europe and higher chance of global food instability due to less fertilizer was just great. Seriously, Republicans are a f****** joke, and that is coming from a right leaning European

He's desperate to stay out of jail, and assumes this will be enough of a distraction: killing scores or American service members for nothing. Also, those in the service vote by mail, so he's desperate to remove that ability, thus silencing the democratic power of those he will murder.
